■Licht
■Light
Light is energy that travels inwave form. Thehuman eye responds to certain wavelengthsand these make up the visible spectrum.Wavelengthsoutsidethisspectrumareinvisibletous,suchasinfrared,ultravioletandX-ray.
Isaac Newton showed that by shining whitelightthroughaglassprismitcouldbeseparatedbackintoitsdifferentwavelengths.
Each wavelength within the visible spectrumis recognised by our eyes as providing aparticular colour sensation, the diagrambelow clearly indicates the visible coloursand their corresponding wavelengths.White light consists of all of the visiblewavelengths, presentinequalamounts.
By using filters to selectively reduce thelevel of light at certain wavelengths we cancreate coloured light to meet our individualrequirements, whethertechnicaloraesthetic.
Most artificial light sources do not actuallyproducewhitelight.Forexample,incandescentsourcessuchastungstengeneratelightwhichhasmoreenergyattheredendofthespectrum,whereasafluorescentsourceoftenhasspikesofenergymainlyintheblueandgreenregion.Filterscanbeusedtocorrectthesedifferencesandmakeonelightsourceappearlikeanother.
In order to record and communicate colouraccurately, youeitherneedtocreateaphysicalexample of that colour that will never fadeor become damaged, or use a mathematicalmodel. A model uses numbers to describedifferent attributes of a certain colour, thesebeingHUE,SATURATIONandLIGHTNESS.TheHUEdescribesthephysicalcolour-red,yellow,greenetc.SATURATIONisaperceptionofhowstrong thehueof the colour is represented inthesample.TheLIGHTNESS(ordarkness)ofacolour isperceived, whena comparisonmadetoasimilarareathatisnotcoloured, butlitwiththesamestrengthofillumination.
As there are three attributes to a colour, the numbers associated with them in amathematical model can be thought of as aposition in a three dimensional shape, thisshapeiscalledacolourspace.
The particular colour space used by LEEFilters technicianswasdevised in1931by theCommision International Eclairage (CIE ) andis one of the many internationally recognisedstandardcolourspaces.
