Vorwort zur 4. Auflage

Seit dem Erscheinen der 3. Auflage des Lehrbuches der Augenheilkunde hat unser Fach mit extrem hoher Geschwindigkeit zahlreiche Änderungen in Diagnostik und Therapie erfahren. Während nach der Jahrhundertwende vor allem die Biochemie und Molekularbiologie diese Entwicklungen vorangetrieben haben, sind in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche bildgebende Verfahren in Kombination mit verschiedenen Anwendungen künstlicher Intelligenz bzw.

„machine learning“ der Promotor dieses Fortschrittes gewesen. Insofern hat die Augenheil-kunde, die lange Zeit sehr morphologisch orientiert war, zu ihren Wurzeln zurückgefunden. Auch die Gentherapie macht große Fortschritte, sodass wir hier mittelfristig erste Einsätze beim Menschen erwarten dürfen. Viele technologische Neuentwicklungen haben auch die Ophthalmochirurgie geradezu revolutioniert. Den genannten Entwicklungen wollten wir mit einer vollständigen Neubearbeitung dieses Buches und zusätzlichen (Unter-)Kapiteln gerecht werden. Die hierfür unerlässliche Bebilderung hat die Zahl der erforderlichen Ab-bildungen nochmals auf nunmehr 862 Abbildungen mit 1572 Einzeldarstellungen wachsen lassen. Ebenso wurden die beliebten, zweckmäßigen Kitteltaschenbeilagen aktualisiert.

Großer Dank gebührt allen Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die an diesem Buch als Autoren so fachkompetent mitgewirkt und dazu beigetragen haben, dass die Augenheilkunde darin so um-fassend dargestellt werden kann.

Die Neuerstellung zahlreicher Graphiken haben freundlicherweise Frau Uschi Dix (Baden- Baden) und Frau Astrid Paul (Wemding) übernommen. Neben der umfangreichen Illustration, für die dem Kaden-Verlag Dank gebührt, wurde im Sinne eines ganzheitlichen Ansatzes großer Wert auf die Darstellung der Krankheitsbilder in Bezug zu anderen Bereichen der Medizin ge-legt.

Dieses Buch hätte nicht entstehen können ohne den Einsatz der Mitarbeiter des Kaden- Verlages, die stets versucht haben, alle Wünsche der Autoren zu erfüllen. Hier möchte ich ins-besondere Herrn Christian Molter erwähnen, der federführend mit der Herstellung betraut war und uns immer schnell und kompetent betreut hat.
