AMZ NewsThe incepTion oF A new TeAM

Retrospective

During the last week of August, AMZ’s 12th car competed on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya at our last event of the year, Formula Student Spain. Once again, eiger impressed the judges du-ring the static events, insuring the team a fourth engineering design event victo-ry – a first since the 2013 season with julier. Despite some mechanical issues during the dynamic events, we mana-ged to finish all of them, concluding the season with four completed endurance events.

Looking back, the year of eiger has been an unforgettable experience. AMZ was able to bring home 18 trophies – two overall victories in the Netherlands and in Germany, four victories in en-gineering design, five other first places

in various disciplines and many more successes big and small.

These achievements would not have been possible without the heart & soul of the car – the team members behind eiger. Thanks to the work of each and every person, the overall trophy of For-mula Student Germany was brought back to Zurich for the first time since the 2014 season. To step it up a notch, it was an overall victory for both AMZ teams – electric & driverless, writing Formula Student history. A milestone for us, and hopefully an indication of ac-complishments for years to come.

The new team

It is once again the time of the year when we proudly announce the new team. The team is composed of sixteen mechanical and four electrical enginee-

rs from the ETH Zurich, five students from the School of Applied Sciences in Lucerne as well as a number of motiva-ted freelance students and alumni, tota-ling to 48 ambitious minds ready to cre-ate the 13th AMZ Formula Student car.

Basecamp & Teambuilding

Throughout the first weeks of Sep-tember, the new team worked by the side of their respective predecessors in order to gather and build on previ-ous years’ lessons learned as well as valuable information. Simultaneously, a number of new ideas and concepts were collected and discussed in the so-called basecamp. Soon it was clear that there will be no lack of innovative and creative ideas in the new season as well.

To provide the conditions to secu-re solid foundations for an efficiently working team, the whole group went to Simmental for two days on the wee-kend of September 28th. Throughout different team building activities, the team not only got to know each other better, but also proved in different tasks how they could reach their collective goals by working together. During these exercises, some rules for smooth and reliable teamwork were decided upon, which will be applied and prove to be valuable throughout the whole season.

At the general assembly on October 13th, a vote has determined the name

of the new car. The first ten cars were named after Swiss alpine passes. Since 2017, our cars tend to bear the name of a famous Swiss mountain. After de-bating for quite a while, the mountain succeeding Pilatus and Eiger in sharing its name with our 13th car is Mythen, located in the canton of Schwyz.

From now until November, all ideas concerning the new car will be consi-dered, evaluated and analyzed based on their feasibility. This is a necessary process prior to presenting the general concept on November 2nd. From then on, the concepts will be thoroughly de-fined in order for the team to embark onto the design phase on November 28th. At the end of the year, the plan-

ning of this seasons’ race car will be finalized. By then, the 13th AMZ car, mythen, will exist as a detailed virtual model.
