The significance of Beracarsquos project for thecommunities becomes more obvious when weobserve the position of the impacted municipalities inthe Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) aranking of the 5565 Brazilian municipalities basedon a study elaborated by the United NationsDevelopment Programme (UNDP)(httpatlasbrasilorgbr2013en) The MHDI is a wayof measuring social and economic developmentbased on the combination of various indicators ofpopulation education housing health work incomeand vulnerability The regions where Beraca sourcesare rich in biodiversity but often poor in basic services and income generation and therefore have rather lowpositions in the ranking A large part of the communities where people supported by Beraca live is rankedbelow the position 2161 (medium development) with especially critical cases at the bottom of the ranking (lowand very low development) such as Igarapeacute Miri (PA) 5244 Moju (PA) 5244 Currais (PI) 5293 AugustoCorrea (PA) 5458 Viseu (PA) 5481 Breves (PA) 5520 and Afuaacute (PA) 5543 Working in these municipalitiesmeans providing income in places where people need opportunities to develop Sustainable and ethicalsourcing of nonshywood resources also contributes to keeping the forest alive against deforestation and woodharvesting
Beracarsquos Health amp Personal Care (HPC) division shy responsible for developing and commercialising productssuch as oils essential oils extracts and butters to the global markets of cosmetic and pharmaceutical shyencourages the communities to adopt management practices that allow them to have the organic producersposition paying for the certification in almost every case In addition this ensures that the biodiversity will bepreserved avoiding soil and water resources contamination by the use of pesticides for example and theburning practice The community that receives the ECOCERT certification can sell their production at a valueup to 20 higher A million and a half acres are tracked and in this way helped in its preservation this is theequivalent to half the size of Belgium
At the end of the day the project represents to Beracarsquos customers acquisition of raw materials obtainedthrough ethical and environmentally responsible processes creation of formulations that will generate lessaggression to final consumers as they are free from compounds of synthetic origin reduction of the negativeenvironmental externalities by decreasing the use of petroleum derivatives and generation of syntheticcompounds replacing them with natural ingredients from Brazilian biodiversity and provided in an ethical andsustainable way

Throughout its history Beraca has established longshyterm partnerships with its stakeholders generatingengagement between members of the productivechain A good example is the alliance created withDeutsche Gesellschaft fuumlr InternationaleZusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the French LOreacutealTogether the organizations will benefit over 300families in 24 municipalities in the Amazon region inthe biennium 20132014 with a total investment ofone million euros

form of transportSociobiodiversity Enhancement ProgramregCurrently Beraca manages a project with theUniversity of Satildeo Paulo (USP) and Columbia University (USA) to determine accurately the socioeconomicconditions of the population that integrates the network of communities with which the company has some kindof relationship shy business or social promotion Until now more than 100 interviews qualitative and quantitativewere conducted in the Marajoacute Island (PA) and other cities such as Braganccedila (PA) will be studied by theresearchers The expectation is that the project results will be published by the beginning of the second half of2014
The results of this survey will be shared with all stakeholders of the company and in addition to providing newdirections for corporate practices can be used by the Government to establish public policies for thesocioeconomic development of the regions studied
