d-lane - cityspace Markus Heinsdorff Ein Ausstellungs Projekt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Goethe-Institut Pune und der Universität Maharashtra, Maeers MIT Institute of Design im Rahmen des Deutschlandjahres in Indien und dessen Leitthema Stadt Räume – City Spaces. Auf 1100 m Straßenlänge (Koregaon Park Rd. – N Main Rd.) leben die Menschen aus unterschiedlichsten sozialen Schichten nebeneinander. Die Straße, zum Teil parallel zum Fluss laufend, bildet so optimal ein vielschichtiges Abbild der Stadt, der Menschen, ihrem Umfeld, Aktivitäten und ihren Berufen. Mit den Portraits und Interviews Einzelner und Gruppen, werden diese Vielschichtigkeiten und Besonderheiten aufgezeigt, die stellvertretend für die gesamte Stadt stehen. Die Geschichten und Schicksale der Bewohner von Apartment- Häusern, Ärzten, Handwerkern, Verkäufern, der rollenden Teestuben, Bewohnern von Slum-Häusern und vielen mehr, zeichnen das Bild dieses Stadtraums. In einem Workshop mit dem MIT Institut wurden Bewohner portraitiert, ihre Herkunft und familiären Verhältnisse in Ton und Text dokumentiert. Jeweils eine Gruppe von Studenten erarbeitet eine bestimmte Anzahl von Beiträgen. In der Open Air Ausstellung 2013 auf der Urban Mela wurden die Beiträge in Form von Fotografien und Texttafeln als lebendiges Abbild der Stadt gezeigt. Die Portraits und Texte entstanden in einem vierwöchigen Workshop zusammen mit den Studenten des MIT. Die „Open Air-Ausstellung“ auf der Urban Mela und dem Titel d-lane war zehn Tage lang zu besichtigen. Die Dokumentation zeigt eine Auswahl der Arbeiten.

"D-lane" project

The project is a workshop starting in 2012 and portrays the people who are living and working on the "D-Lane" in Pune.The exhibition shows the life in an Indian city.

On 1100 meters, people of different social classes live side by side. The street, partly running parallel to the river, isdepicting a complex picture of the city, its people, their environment, activities and professions. With portraits ofindividuals and groups this variety should be shown on behalf of the entire city.

The stories and destinies of the residents, medical doctors, craftsmen, salesmen, mobile teashops, slum inhabitantsand many more depict this urban area.

Beside the exhibition the project will be published as an e-book including an own website starting January 2013. Theproject is an official part of the "Germany-and-India: Infinite Opportunities" project.

The students participating at the workshop are from different semesters of the design at the MIT.

The exhibition displaying a vivid portrait of the city consists of photo panels, video sequences, text boards and sounddocuments. The exhibition is planned to be continued at galleries in Germany and India.

Information about artists

Markus Heinsdorff: The Munich installation artist has been a visiting scholar for arts for several years at various Asianuniversities. In spring 2011, the German Foreign Office commissioned Markus Heinsdorff to develop textile pavilions asbuildings of art which are exhibited in five Indian cities under the title "Germany and India - Infinite Opportunities (UrbanMela)" from November 2011 until the end of 2012.

Dhimant Panchal, Prof. and Director at MAEER's MIT Institute of Design is a graduate of a premier institution, theNational Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad. He graduated in the year 1980 in Industrial Design stream (ProductDesign discipline). He is one of India's foremost design educators with a 32 year experience as a design faculty atvarious leading design institutes in India. He is currently the Director of the MAEER's MIT Institute of Design in Pune.

Pritharshv Pushkar, Asst. Prof. Retail & Exhibition design at the MAEER's MIT Institute of Design studied productdesign at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. He has been an art and creative director at many differentcompanies among them the Times of India, India's largest media organization. He has also been a productiondesigner; mainly on the 9 time Emmy Award winning reality series The Amazing Race. He supervises the D-LANEworkshop.
