Heliostats typically account for one-third to one-half of the

initial capital cost of a new CSP field. Therefore, it is no

surprise that the likes of Germany’s SBP Sonne, a leading

solar power engineering consultancy, and Spain’s National

Renewable Energy Centre (CENER) are focusing much of

China Shouhang Dunhuang 100 MW moltensalt Solar Tower Concentrated Solar Powerpilot projectBeijing Shouhang IHW Resourves Saving Co., Ltd (shorted

as Shouhang) is one of the leading solar CSP industry

players in China. In 2013, Shouhang monitored Dunhuang’s

DNI and started design and construction according to the

measured statistics. On December 2016, 138 meters receiver

tower was lighted firstly, which marked that, Shouhang

Dunhuang 1st Phase 10MW molten salt Tower CSP project

became the first 24-hours continuous-generation molten salt

CSP tower project in Asia and the third molten salt CSP tower

project in the world was successfully connected to the grid.

supply the steam generation system for the 50MW Shenzen

Jinfan concentrated solar power (CSP) plant which is among

by the end of 2018. The facility is a flagship project with its

exceptionally long 15-hours energy storage capability and a

good example of how European design combined with local

A 3D-Print CSP Receiver Makes 20% MoreEffective At Absorbing Sunlight Engineers from Sandia National Laboratories have developed

a new type of receiver for concentrating solar power plants,

which should improve the sunlight capture efficiency of

smaller facilities. Concentrating solar plants (CSP) can be a

key part of a comprehensive renewable energy strategy, but

progress is often focused on making the facilities bigger and

bigger. Now, engineers from Sandia National Laboratories are

improving the efficiency of smaller plants, by designing a

new receiver that can absorb greater amounts of sunlight.

(shorted as Power China). Northwest Engineering

Corporation Limited, subsidiary of Power China announced

earlier this week that SUPCON Solar was awarded the

contract solar field EPC for the Gonghe 50MW tower CSP

plant. SUPCON will be responsible for equipment purchase

Another Production Milestone! Bokpoortbreaks a Concentrated Solar Power recordIt’s announced that on the 27th November 2017, South

Africa’s Bokpoort CSP clocked production of 1009.31 MWh in

a single day. This is the highest production ever over a single

24 hour period. The previous record was 999.13 MWh on 28th

November 2016 which fell just short of the “Sweet Spot” of

1000 MWh per day which is equivalent to 20 hours of full load

operations (with a 50MW turbine and a 9.3 hour storage

system) akin to base-load technologies.

LCOE of $50/MWh can be achieved next yearin the Concentrated Solar Power The benchmark levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for global

CSP projects will fall below $50/MWh in 2018, two of the

industry’s leading consultants predicted at CSP Seville 2017.

ACWA’s 700 MW Dubai Project, which combines tower and

trough technologies, will deliver $73/MWh LCOE from direct

normal irradiance (DNI) of about 2,050 kWh per square-meter

per year, noted Jonathan Walters, MENA CSP Knowledge and

Innovation Program Team Leader and a senior figure at

Castalia Advisors. Given this, Walters said, $50/MWh could

easily be achieved in Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, or Morocco,

We continue to receive good news from South Africa.

Abengoa has developed three solar thermal power plants for

electricity generation in the north of the country. Xina Solar

One -the last to be constructed- achieved practical

completion back in August 2017, and has successfully

completed its first three months of operation. Today, we will

examine this milestone which is evidence of the continuous

evolution of Abengoa’s technology and its ability to

undertake highly complex technical projects.

BMI foresees bright future for CSP in MENAregionThe MENA region is likely to witness an upsurge in

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects at the back of

declining costs of deployment, a new report by BMI has

revealed. Uptake of the technology is expected to be high in

markets with high solar irradiation such as UAE and Oman.

Unlike Photovoltaic (PV) solar technology, CSP allows for the

generation of power even after sunset owing to its thermal

DLR scientists start the operation of new testfacility for hydrogen produciton with solarthermal power On 28 November 2017, the German Aerospace Center

(Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), together

with international project partners, presented the current

largest solar-chemical installation for the production of

hydrogen. In the HYDROSOL_Plant project, scientists and

companies have jointly further developed the process of

direct hydrogen production using solar radiation. By

redeveloping both the materials used and the structure of the

reactor, the facility can now provide a power of 750 kilowatts.

This is a significant improvement over the previous

development stage of this facility, which had a power output

of approximately 100 kilowatts. In the coming months,

scientists will produce hydrogen in test operations and

demonstrations at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA) in

southern Spain, and investigate the suitability of materials.

2018 China CSP Industry Review and OutlookLeaders Summit to be Held on January 19thIn 2017, commercial CSP plants in China started construction

gradually. During this year, work on some demonstration

projects progressed smoothly. But more projects have

been brought to a standstill. There is also the blend of
