The impact of concentrated solar power in electric power systems in ChileThis paper presents a study about the impacts of the integration of concentrated solar power (CSP) with thermal energy storage (TES) in electric power systems.The main tool for this study is a comprehensive long-term power system capacity expansion planning model that integrates a specific module to represent the operation of CSP-TES power plants. The model determines the optimal investments on generation and transmission assets over a twenty-year planning horizon, ranging from 2018 until 2037, and employs projections for the various parameters involved (e.g. load growth, capital costs for the different generation technologies, fuels costs). CSP contributed for job creationWhile solar PV supports the most jobs among the various renewable energy technologies, CSP is known to be more labor intensive. Much of the work required to build a CSP plant needs be performed locally. The largest contribution to job creation happens when a CSP plant is under construction. Largest CSP plant in Africa reducing Morocco's dependency on external powerMorocco currently depends on external sources for 95 percent of its primary energy needs. Between 2002 and 2012 alone, the country’s energy consumption increased by an average of 7.2 percent. Meanwhile, Morocco’s demand for primary energy is expected to triple, while demand for electricity is set to quadruple by 2030. In response to this, the country has prioritized improving its home-grown power supply under its new 2010 to 2030 energy strategy.
