I ask the indulgence of the children whomay read this book for dedicating it to agrown-up. I have a serious reason: he is thebest friend I have in the world.

I have another reason: this grown-upunderstands everything, even books aboutchildren. I have a third reason: he lives inFrance where he is hungry and cold.

He needs cheering up. If all these reasons arenot enough, I will dedicate the book to thechild from whom this grown-up grew.

All grown-ups were once children—althoughfew of them remember it. And so I correctmy dedication:

1 I

Once when I was six years old I saw amagnificent picture in a book, called TrueStories from Nature, about the primevalforest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the actof swallowing an animal. Here is a copy ofthe drawing.

Als ich sechs Jahre alt war, sah ich einmalin einem Buch über den Urwald, das»Erlebte Geschichten« hieß, ein prächtigesBild. Es stellte eine Riesenschlange dar, wie sie einWildtier verschlang. Hier ist eine Kopie derZeichnung.

In the book it said: "Boa constrictorsswallow their prey whole, without chewing it.After that they are not able to move, and theysleep through the six months that they needfor digestion."

I pondered deeply, then, over theadventures of the jungle. And after somework with a coloured pencil I succeeded inmaking my first drawing. My DrawingNumber One. It looked something like this:

In dem Buche hieß es: »Die Boasverschlingen ihre Beute als Ganzes, ohne siezu zerbeißen. Daraufhin können sie sich nichtmehr rühren und schlafen sechs Monate, umzu verdauen. «

Ich habe damals viel über die Abenteuerdes Dschungels nachgedacht, und ichvollendete mit einem Farbstift meine ersteZeichnung. Meine Zeichnung Nr. 1. So sahsie aus:

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawingfrightened them. But they answered: "Frighten? Why shouldany one be frightened by a hat?" My drawing was not a picture of a hat. Itwas a picture of a boa constrictor digesting anelephant. But since the grown-ups were not able tounderstand it, I made another drawing: I drewthe inside of a boa constrictor, so that thegrown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained.My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

Sie haben geantwortet: »Warum sollen wirvor einem Hut Angst haben?« Meine Zeichnung stellte aber keinen Hutdar. Sie stellte eine Riesenschlange dar, dieeinen Elefanten verdaut. The grown-ups' response, this time, was toadvise me to lay aside my drawings of boaconstrictors, whether from the inside or theoutside, and devote myself instead togeography, history, arithmetic, and grammar.

That is why, at the age of six, I gave up whatmight have been a magnificent career as apainter. I had been disheartened by the failure

I have flown a little over all parts of theworld; and it is true that geography has beenvery useful to me. At a glance I candistinguish China from Arizona. If one getslost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.

Ich bin überall in der Welt herumgeflogen,und die Geographie hat mir dabei wirklichgute Dienste geleistet. Ich konnte auf denersten Blick China von Arizonaunterscheiden. Das ist sehr praktisch, wennman sich in der Nacht verirrt hat.

In the course of this life I have had a greatmany encounters with a great many peoplewho have been concerned with matters ofconsequence. I have lived a great deal amonggrown-ups. I have seen them intimately, closeat hand. And that hasn't much improved myopinion of them.

So habe ich im Laufe meines Lebens miteiner Menge ernsthafter Leute zu tun gehabt.Ich bin viel mit Erwachsenen umgegangenund habe Gelegenheit gehabt, sie ganz ausder Nähe zu betrachten. Das hat meinerMeinung über sie nicht besonders gut getan.

Whenever I met one of them who seemedto me at all clear-sighted, I tried theexperiment of showing him my DrawingNumber One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was aperson of true understanding. But, whoever itwas, he, or she, would always say:

"That is a hat." Then I would never talk to that personabout boa constrictors, or primeval forests, orstars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf,and politics, and neckties. And the grown-upwould be greatly pleased to have met such asensible man.

So I lived my life alone, without anyonethat I could really talk to, until I had anaccident with my plane in the Desert ofSahara, six years ago. Something was broken in my engine. And asI had with me neither a mechanic nor anypassengers, I set myself to attempt thedifficult repairs all alone. It was a question of life or death for me: I

The first night, then, I went to sleep on thesand, a thousand miles from any humanhabitation. I was more isolated than ashipwrecked sailor on a raft in the middle ofthe ocean. Thus you can imagine my amazement, atsunrise, when I was awakened by an oddlittle voice. It said:

I blinked my eyes hard. Ilooked carefully all around me. And I saw amost extraordinary small person, who stoodthere examining me with great seriousness. Here you may see the best portrait that, later,I was able to make of him.

But my drawing is certainly very much lesscharming than its model.

That, however, is not my fault. The grown-ups discouraged me in my painter's careerwhen I was six years old, and I never learnedto draw anything, except boas from theoutside and boas from the inside.

Aber das Bild ist bestimmt nicht sobezaubernd wie das Modell.

Now I stared at this sudden apparition withmy eyes fairly starting out of my head inastonishment.

Remember, I had crashed in the desert athousand miles from any inhabited region.And yet my little man seemed neither to bestraying uncertainly among the sands, nor tobe fainting from fatigue or hunger or thirst orfear. Nothing about him gave any suggestion of achild lost in the middle of the desert, athousand miles from any human habitation.When at last I was able to speak, I said tohim:

Vergeßt nicht, daß ich mich tausend Meilenabseits jeder bewohnten Gegend befand.Auch schien mir mein kleines Männchennicht verirrt, auch nicht halbtot vorMüdigkeit, Hunger, Durst oder Angst.

Es machte durchaus nicht den Eindruck einesmitten in der Wüste verlorenen Kindes,tausend Meilen von jeder bewohnten Gegend.Als ich endlich sprechen konnte, sagte ich zuihm:

"But—what are you doing here?" »Aber... was machst denn du da?« And in answer he repeated, very slowly, asif he were speaking of a matter of greatconsequence:

"If you please—draw me a sheep..." »Bitte... zeichne mir ein Schaf...« When a mystery is too overpowering, onedare not disobey. Absurd as it might seem tome, a thousand miles from any humanhabitation and in danger of death, I took outof my pocket a sheet of paper and myfountain-pen. But then I remembered how my studies hadbeen concentrated on geography, history,arithmetic and grammar, and I told the littlechap (a little crossly, too) that I did not knowhow to draw.

Wenn das Geheimnis zu eindrucksvoll ist,wagt man nicht zu widerstehen. So absurd esmir erschien - tausend Meilen von jedermenschlichen Behausung und in Todesgefahrich zog aus meiner Tasche ein Blatt Papierund eine Füllfeder. Dann aber erinnerte ich mich, daß ich vorallem Geographie, Geschichte, Rechnen undGrammatik studiert hatte, und mißmutig sagteich zu dem Männchen, daß ich nicht zeichnenkönne.

He answered me: "That doesn't matter. Draw me a sheep..."

Es antwortete: »Das macht nichts. Zeichne mir einSchaf.«

But I had never drawn a sheep. So I drewfor him one of the two pictures I had drawnso often. It was that of the boa constrictorfrom the outside. And I was astounded tohear the little fellow greet it with,

Da ich nie ein Schaf gezeichnet hatte,machte ich ihm eine von den einzigen zweiZeichnungen, die ich zuwege brachte. Dievon der geschlossenen Riesenschlange. Undich war höchst verblüfft, als ich dasMännchen sagen hörte:

"No, no, no! I do not want an elephantinside a boa constrictor. A boa constrictor is avery dangerous creature, and an elephant isvery cumbersome. Where I live, everything isvery small. What I need is a sheep. Draw mea sheep."

»Nein, nein! Ich will keinen Elefanten ineiner Riesenschlange. Eine Riesenschlangeist sehr gefährlich und ein Elefant brauchtviel Platz. Bei mir zu Hause ist wenig Platz.Ich brauche ein Schaf. Zeichne mir einSchaf.«

So then I made a drawing Also habe ich gezeichnet.

. He looked at it carefully, then he said:"No. This sheep is already very sickly. Makeme another."

Das Männchen schaute aufmerksam zu,dann sagte es: »Nein! Das ist schon sehrkrank. Mach ein anderes.«

So I made another drawing. Ich zeichnete.

My friend smiled gently and indulgently. Mein Freund lächelte artig und mitNachsicht: »

"You see yourself," he said, "that this isnot a sheep. This is a ram. It has horns."

Du siehst wohl... das ist kein Schaf, das istein Widder. Es hat Hörner...«

So then I did my drawing over once more. Ich machte also meine Zeichnung nocheinmal.

But it was rejected too, just like the others: Aber sie wurde ebenso abgelehnt wie dievorigen:

"This one is too old. I want a sheep thatwill live a long time."

»Das ist schon zu alt. Ich will ein Schaf,das lange lebt.«

By this time my patience was exhausted,because I was in a hurry to start taking myengine apart. So I tossed off this drawing. And I threw out an explanation with it.

Mir ging die Geduld aus, es war höchsteZeit, meinen Motor auszubauen, so kritzelteich diese Zeichnung da zusammen undknurrte dazu:

"This is only his box. The sheep you askedfor is inside."

»Das ist die Kiste. Das Schaf, das duwillst, steckt da drin.«

I was very surprised to see a light breakover the face of my young judge:

Und ich war höchst überrascht, als ich dasGesicht meines jungen Kritikers aufleuchtensah:

"That is exactly the way I wanted it! Doyou think that this sheep will have to have agreat deal of grass?"

»Das ist ganz so, wie ich es mir gewünschthabe. Meinst du, daß dieses Schaf viel Grasbraucht?«

"Why?" "Because where I live everything is verysmall..."

»Warum?« »Weil bei mir zu Hause alles ganz kleinist...«

"There will surely be enough grass forhim," I said. "It is a very small sheep that Ihave given you."

»Es wird bestimmt ausreichen. Ich habe direin ganz kleines Schaf geschenkt.«

He bent his head over the drawing. Er neigte den Kopf über die Zeichnung:

"Not so small that—Look! He has gone tosleep..."

»Nicht so klein wie... Aber sieh nur! Es isteingeschlafen...«

And that is how I made the acquaintance ofthe little prince.

So machte ich die Bekanntschaft deskleinen Prinzen.

3 III

It took me a long time to learn where hecame from. The little prince, who asked meso many questions, never seemed to hear theones I asked him. It was from words dropped by chance that,little by little, everything was revealed to me. The first time he saw my airplane, forinstance (I shall not draw my airplane; thatwould be much too complicated for me), heasked me:

Ich brauchte lange Zeit, um zu verstehen,woher er kam. Der kleine Prinz, der vieleFragen an mich richtete, schien die meinennie zu hören. "What is that object?" »Was ist das für ein Ding da?« "That is not an object. It flies. It is anairplane. It is my airplane."

And I was proud to have him learn that Icould fly. He cried out, then:

"What! You dropped down from the sky?" »Wie! Du bist vom Himmel gefallen?« "Yes," I answered, modestly. »Ja«, sagte ich bescheiden. "Oh! That is funny!" »Ah! Das ist ja lustig...« And the little prince broke into a lovelypeal of laughter, which irritated me verymuch. I like my misfortunes to be takenseriously. Then he added:

At that moment I caught a gleam of light inthe impenetrable mystery of his presence; andI demanded, abruptly:

But he did not reply. He tossed his headgently, without taking his eyes from myplane:

aroused by this half-confidence about the"other planets." I made a great effort,therefore, to find out more on this subject:

"My little man, where do you come from?

What is this 'where I live,' of which youspeak? Where do you want to take yoursheep?"

»Woher kommst du, mein kleinesKerlchen?Wo bist du denn zu Hause? Wohin willst dumein Schaf mitnehmen?«

After a reflective silence he answered: Er antwortete nach einem nachdenklichenSchweigen:

"The thing that is so good about the boxyou have given me is that at night he can useit as his house."

»Die Kiste, die du mir da geschenkt hast,hat das Gute, daß sie ihm nachts als Hausdienen kann.«

"That is so. And if you are good I will giveyou a string, too, so that you can tie himduring the day, and a post to tie him to."

But the little prince seemed shocked bythis offer:

And, with perhaps a hint of sadness, headded:

I had thus learned a second fact of greatimportance: this was that the planet the littleprince came from was scarcely any largerthan a house! But that did not really surprise me much. Iknew very well that in addition to the greatplanets—such as the Earth, Jupiter, Mars,Venus—to which we have given names, thereare also hundreds of others, some of whichare so small that one has a hard time seeingthem through the telescope. When an astronomer discovers one of thesehe does not give it a name, but only anumber.

He might call it, for example, "Asteroid3251." I have serious reason to believe that theplanet from which the little prince came is theasteroid known as B-612. This asteroid has only once been seenthrough the telescope. That was by a Turkishastronomer, in 1909. On making his discovery, the astronomerhad presented it to the International

Wenn ein Astronom einen von ihnenentdeckt, gibt er ihm statt des Namens eineNummer.

Er nennt ihn zum Beispiel: Asteroid Nr.3.251. Ich habe ernsthafte Gründe zu glauben, daßder Planet, von dem der kleine Prinz kam, derAsteroid B 612 ist. Dieser Planet ist nur ein einziges Mal imJahre 1909 von einem türkischen Astronomenim Fernrohr gesehen worden. Er hatte damals beim internationalenAstronomen- kongreß einen großen Vortrag

über seine Entdeckung gehalten.

But he was in Turkish costume, and sonobody would believe what he said. Grown-ups are like that... Fortunately, however, for the reputation ofAsteroid B-612, a Turkish dictator made alaw that his subjects, under pain of death,should change to European costume. So in 1920 the astronomer gave hisdemonstration all over again, dressed withimpressive style and elegance. And this timeeverybody accepted his report.

Aber niemand hatte ihm geglaubt, und zwarganz einfach seines Anzuges wegen. Die großen Leute sind so. Zum Glück für den Ruf des Planeten B 612befahl ein türkischer Diktator seinem Volkbei Todesstrafe, nur noch europäische Kleiderzu tragen. If I have told you these details about theasteroid, and made a note of its number foryou, it is on account of the grown-ups andtheir ways.

When you tell them that you have made anew friend, they never ask you any questionsabout essential matters. They never say to you, "What does his voicesound like? What games does he love best?Does he collect butterflies?" Instead, they demand: "How old is he? Howmany brothers has he? How much does heweigh? How much money does his fathermake?" Only from these figures do they thinkthey have learned anything about him.

Welche Spiele liebt er am meisten?Sammelt er Schmetterlinge? Sie fragen euch: Wie alt ist er? WievieleBrüder hat er? Wieviel wiegt er? Wievielverdient sein Vater? Dann erst glauben sie,ihn zu kennen.

If you were to say to the grown-ups: "I sawa beautiful house made of rosy brick, withgeraniums in the windows and doves on the

roof," they would not be able to get any ideaof that house at all. You would have to say to them: "I saw ahouse that cost $20,000." Then they wouldexclaim: "Oh, what a pretty house that is!"

Just so, you might say to them: "The proofthat the little prince existed is that he wascharming, that he laughed, and that he waslooking for a sheep. If anybody wants asheep, that is a proof that he exists." And what good would it do to tell them that?

They would shrug their shoulders, and treatyou like a child. But if you said to them: "Theplanet he came from is Asteroid B-612," thenthey would be convinced, and leave you inpeace from their questions. They are like that. One must not hold itagainst them. Children should always showgreat forbearance toward grown-up people.

So auch, wenn ihr ihnen sagt: Der Beweisdafür, daß es den kleinen Prinzen wirklichgegeben hat, besteht darin, daß er entzückendwar, daß er lachte und daß er ein Schaf habenwollte; denn wenn man sich ein Schafwünscht, ist es doch ein Beweis dafür, daßman lebt, - dann werden sie die Achseln zucken undeuch als Kinder behandeln. Kinder müssen mit großenLeuten viel Nachsicht haben.

But certainly, for us who understand life,figures are a matter of indifference. I shouldhave liked to begin this story in the fashion ofthe fairy-tales. I should have like to say: "Once upon a timethere was a little prince who lived on a planetthat was scarcely any bigger than himself,and who had need of a sheep..." To those who understand life, that wouldhave given a much greater air of truth to mystory. For I do not want any one to read mybook carelessly.

Wir freilich, die wir wissen, was das Lebeneigentlich ist, wir machen uns nur lustig überdie albernen Zahlen. Viel lieber hätte ichdiese Geschichte begonnen wie ein Märchen. Am liebsten hätte ich so angefangen: Es wareinmal ein kleiner Prinz, der wohnte aufeinem Planeten, der kaum größer war als erselbst, und er brauchte einen Freund... Für die, die das Leben richtig verstehen,würde das viel glaubwürdiger klingen. Dennich möchte nicht, daß man mein Buch leichtnimmt.

I have suffered too much grief in settingdown these memories. Six years have alreadypassed since my friend went away from me,with his sheep. If I try to describe him here, itis to make sure that I shall not forget him. To forget a friend is sad. Not every one hashad a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like thegrown-ups who are no longer interested inanything but figures... It is for that purpose, again, that I havebought a box of paints and some pencils.

I shall certainly try to make my portraits astrue to life as possible. But I am not at allsure of success.

One drawing goes along all right, and anotherhas no resemblance to its subject. I makesome errors, too, in the little prince's height:in one place he is too tall and in another tooshort. And I feel some doubts about the colour ofhis costume. So I fumble along as best I can,now good, now bad, and I hope generallyfair-to-middling. In certain more important details I shallmake mistakes, also. But that is somethingthat will not be my fault. My friend neverexplained anything to me. He thought,perhaps, that I was like himself. But I, alas,do not know how to see sheep through thewalls of boxes. Perhaps I am a little like thegrown-ups. I have had to grow old.

Auch die Farbe seiner Kleider macht mirKummer. Dann probiere ich hin und her, sogut es eben geht.

Ich werde mich vermutlich auch beiwichtigeren Einzelheiten irren. Aber das mußman doch schon nachsehen. Mein Freund hatmir nie Erklärungen gegeben. Er glaubtewahrscheinlich, ich sei wie er. Aber ich binleider nicht imstande, durch die Kistenbretterhindurch Schafe zu sehen. Ich gleiche dochwohl schon eher den großen Leuten. Ichmußte ja im Laufe der Zeit älter werden.

As each day passed I would learn, in ourtalk, something about the little prince'splanet, his departure from it, his journey. The information would come very slowly, asit might chance to fall from his thoughts. It was in this way that I heard, on the thirdday, about the catastrophe of the baobabs. This time, once more, I had the sheep tothank for it. For the little prince asked meabruptly—as if seized by a grave doubt—

Das ergab sich ganz sachte im Laufe meinerÜberlegungen. So lernte ich am dritten Tage die Tragödieder Affenbrotbäume kennen. Auch dies verdanke ich schließlich demSchaf, denn unvermittelt fragte mich derkleine Prinz, als wäre er von einem schwerenZweifel geplagt:

"It is true, isn't it, that sheep eat littlebushes?"

»Es stimmt doch, daß Schafe Staudenfressen?«

"Yes, that is true." »Ja, das stimmt.« "Ah! I am glad!" »Ach, da bin ich froh!« I did not understand why it was soimportant that sheep should eat little bushes.But the little prince added:

Ich verstand nicht, warum es so wichtigwar, daß Schafe Stauden fressen. Aber derkleine Prinz fügte hinzu:

"Then it follows that they also eatbaobabs?"

»Dann fressen sie doch auchAffenbrotbäume?«

baobabs were not little bushes, but, on thecontrary, trees as big as castles; and that even if he took a whole herd ofelephants away with him, the herd would noteat up one single baobab. The idea of the herd of elephants made thelittle prince laugh.

"We would have to put them one on top ofthe other," he said.

»Man müßte sie übereinanderstellen...«

But he made a wise comment: Aber dann bemerkte er klugerweise: "Before they grow so big, the baobabs startout by being little."

»Bevor die Affenbrotbäume groß werden,fangen sie ja erst damit an, klein zu sein.«

"That is strictly correct," I said. "But whydo you want the sheep to eat the littlebaobabs?"

»Das ist schon richtig. Aber warum willstdu, daß deine Schafe die kleinenAffenbrotbäume fressen?«

He answered me at once, "Oh, come,come!", as if he were speaking of somethingthat was self-evident. And I was obliged tomake a great mental effort to solve thisproblem, without any assistance. Indeed, as I learned, there were on theplanet where the little prince lived—as on allplanets—good plants and bad plants. Inconsequence, there were good seeds fromgood plants, and bad seeds from bad plants.

But seeds are invisible. They sleep deep inthe heart of the earth's darkness, until someone among them is seized with the desire toawaken. Then this little seed will stretch itself andbegin—timidly at first—to push a charminglittle sprig inoffensively upward toward thesun. If it is only a sprout of radish or the sprigof a rose-bush, one would let it growwherever it might wish. But when it is a bad plant, one must destroy itas soon as possible, the very first instant thatone recognizes it. Now there were some terrible seeds on the

Dann streckt er sich und treibt zuerstschüchtern einen entzückenden kleinen Sproßzur Sonne, einen ganz harmlosen. Wenn essich um einen Radieschen- oder Rosentriebhandelt, kann man ihn wachsen lassen, wie erwill. Aber wenn es sich um eine schädlichePflanze handelt, muß man die Pflanzebeizeiten herausreißen, sobald man erkannthat, was für eine es ist.

A baobab is something you will never, neverbe able to get rid of if you attend to it toolate. It spreads over the entire planet. It bores clear through it with its roots. And ifthe planet is too small, and the baobabs aretoo many, they split it in pieces...

"It is a question of discipline," the littleprince said to me later on. "When you've finished your own toilet in themorning, then it is time to attend to the toiletof your planet, just so, with the greatest care. You must see to it that you pull up regularlyall the baobabs, at the very first momentwhen they can be distinguished from therosebushes which they resemble so closely intheir earliest youth. It is very tedious work," the little princeadded, "but very easy."

And one day he said to me: "You ought tomake a beautiful drawing, so that the childrenwhere you live can see exactly how all this is.

That would be very useful to them if theywere to travel some day. Sometimes," headded, "there is no harm in putting off a pieceof work until another day. But when it is amatter of baobabs, that always means acatastrophe. I knew a planet that wasinhabited by a lazy man. He neglected threelittle bushes..."

Und eines Tages riet er mir, ich solle michbemühen, eine schöne Zeichnung zustande zubringen, damit es den Kindern bei mir daheimauch richtig in den Kopf gehe.

»Wenn sie eines Tages auf die Reise gehen«,sagte er, »kann es ihnen zugute kommen.Zuweilen macht es ja wohl nichts aus, wennman seine Arbeit auf später verschiebt. Aberwenn es sich um Affenbrotbäume handelt,führt das stets zur Katastrophe. Ich habeeinen Planeten gekannt, den ein Faulpelzbewohnte. Er hatte drei Sträucherübersehen...«

So, as the little prince described it to me, Ihave made a drawing of that planet. I do notmuch like to take the tone of a moralist.

But the danger of the baobabs is so littleunderstood, and such considerable riskswould be run by anyone who might get loston an asteroid, that for once I am breakingthrough my reserve. "Children," I say plainly,"watch out for the baobabs!"

Und so habe ich denn diesen Planeten nachden Angaben des kleinen Prinzen gezeichnet.Ich nehme nicht gerne den Tonfall einesMoralisten an. Aber die Gefährlichkeit der Affenbrotbäumeist so wenig bekannt, und die Gefahren, diejedem drohen, der sich auf einen Asteroidenverirrt, sind so beträchtlich ,daß ich für dieseseine Mal aus meiner Zurückhaltungheraustrete. Ich sage: Kinder, Achtung! DieAffenbrotbäume!

My friends, like myself, have been skirtingthis danger for a long time, without everknowing it; and so it is for them that I haveworked so hard over this drawing. The lessonwhich I pass on by this means is worth all thetrouble it has cost me.

Um meine Freunde auf eine Gefahraufmerksam zu machen, die - unerkannt -ihnen wie mir seit langem droht, habe ich soviel an dieser Zeichnung gearbeitet. DieLehre, die ich damit gebe, ist gewiß der Mühewert.

Perhaps you will ask me, "Why are thereno other drawing in this book as magnificentand impressive as this drawing of thebaobabs?"

Ihr werdet euch vielleicht fragen: Warumenthält dieses Buch nicht noch andere, ebensogroßartige Zeichnungen wie die Zeichnungvon den Affenbrotbäumen ?

The reply is simple. I have tried. But withthe others I have not been successful.

When I made the drawing of the baobabs Iwas carried beyond myself by the inspiringforce of urgent necessity.

Die Antwort ist sehr einfach: Ich habewohl den Versuch gewagt, aber es ist mirnicht gelungen. Als ich die Affenbrotbäume zeichnete, warich vom Gefühl der Dringlichkeit beseelt.

Oh, little prince! Bit by bit I came tounderstand the secrets of your sad little life...

For a long time you had found your onlyentertainment in the quiet pleasure of lookingat the sunset. I learned that new detail on the morning ofthe fourth day, when you said to me:

Ach, kleiner Prinz, so nach und nach habeich dein kleines schwermütiges Lebenverstanden. Lange Zeit hast du, um dich zu zerstreuen,nichts anderes gehabt als die Lieblichkeit derSonnenuntergänge. Das erfuhr ich am Morgen des vierten Tages,als du mir sagtest:

"I am very fond of sunsets. Come, let us golook at a sunset now."

»Ich liebe Sonnenuntergänge sehr. Komm,laß uns einen Sonnenuntergang anschauen...«

"But we must wait," I said. »Da muß man noch warten...« "Wait? For what?" »Worauf denn warten?« "For the sunset. We must wait until it istime."

»Warten, bis die Sonne untergeht.«

At first you seemed to be very muchsurprised. And then you laughed to yourself.You said to me:

If you could fly to France in one minute,you could go straight into the sunset, rightfrom noon. Unfortunately, France is too faraway for that.

But on your tiny planet, my little prince, allyou need do is move your chair a few steps.You can see the day end and the twilightfalling whenever you like...

In der Tat. Wenn es in den VereinigtenStaaten Mittag ist, geht die Sonne, wiejedermann weiß, in Frankreich unter. Um dort einem Sonnenuntergangbeizuwohnen, müßte man in einer Minutenach Frankreich fliegen können.Unglücklicherweise ist Frankreich viel zuweit weg. Aber auf deinem so kleinen Planeten genügtees, den Sessel um einige Schritteweiterzurücken. Und du erlebtest dieDämmerung, so oft du es wünschtest...

"One day," you said to me, "I saw thesunset forty-four times!"

»An einem Tag habe ich die Sonnedreiundvierzigmal untergehen sehn!«

And a little later you added: Und ein wenig später fügtest du hinzu: "You know—one loves the sunset, whenone is so sad..."

»Du weißt doch, wenn man recht traurigist, liebt man die Sonnenuntergänge...«

"Were you so sad, then?" I asked, "on theday of the forty-four sunsets?"

»Am Tage mit den dreiundvierzigmalwarst du also besonders traurig?«

But the little prince made no reply. Aber der kleine Prinz antwortete nicht.

On the fifth day—again, as always, it wasthanks to the sheep—the secret of the littleprince's life was revealed to me. Abruptly, without anything to lead up to it,and as if the question had been born of longand silent meditation on his problem, hedemanded:

Am fünften Tag war es wieder das Schaf,das ein Lebensgeheimnis des kleinen Prinzenenthüllen half. Er fragte mich unvermittelt, ohneUmschweife, als pflückte er die Frucht einesin langem Schweigen gereiften Problems:

"A sheep—if it eats little bushes, does iteat flowers, too?"

»Wenn ein Schaf Sträucher frißt, so frißt esdoch auch die Blumen?«

"A sheep," I answered, "eats anything itfinds in its reach."

»Ein Schaf frißt alles, was ihm vors Maulkommt.«

"Even flowers that have thorns?" »Auch die Blumen, die Dornen haben?« "Yes, even flowers that have thorns." »Ja. Auch die Blumen, die Dornen haben.« "Then the thorns—what use are they?" »Wozu haben sie dann die Dornen?« I did not know. At that moment I was verybusy trying to unscrew a bolt that had gotstuck in my engine.

I was very much worried, for it wasbecoming clear to me that the breakdown ofmy plane was extremely serious. And I had so little drinking-water left that Ihad to fear for the worst.

Ich wußte es nicht. Ich war gerade mit demVersuch beschäftigt, einen zu strengangezogenen Bolzen meines Motorsabzuschrauben. Ich war in großer Sorge, da mir meine Pannesehr bedenklich zu erscheinen begann, undich machte mich aufs Schlimmste gefaßt,weil das Trinkwasser zur Neige ging.

"The thorns—what use are they?" »Was für einen Zweck haben die Dornen?« The little prince never let go of a question,once he had asked it. As for me, I was upsetover that bolt. And I answered with the firstthing that came into my head:

Der kleine Prinz verzichtete niemals aufeine Frage, wenn er sie einmal gestellt hatte.Ich war völlig mit meinem Bolzen beschäftigtund antwortete aufs Geratewohl:

"The thorns are of no use at all. Flowershave thorns just for spite!"

"Oh!" »Oh!« There was a moment of complete silence.Then the little prince flashed back at me, witha kind of resentfulness:

"I don't believe you! Flowers are weakcreatures. They are naive. They reassurethemselves as best they can. They believethat their thorns are terrible weapons..."

I did not answer. At that instant I wassaying to myself: "If this bolt still won't turn,I am going to knock it out with the hammer." Again the little prince disturbed my thoughts:

"You talk just like the grown-ups!" »Du sprichst ja wie die großen Leute!« That made me a little ashamed. But hewent on, relentlessly:

"You mix everything up together... Youconfuse everything..."

He was really very angry. He tossed hisgolden curls in the breeze.

"I know a planet where there is a certainred-faced gentleman. He has never smelled aflower. He has never looked at a star. He hasnever loved any one. He has never doneanything in his life but add up figures.

And all day he says over and over, just likeyou: 'I am busy with matters of consequence!'And that makes him swell up with pride. Buthe is not a man—he is a mushroom!"

His face turned from white to red as hecontinued:

"If some one loves a flower, of which justone single blossom grows in all the millionsand millions of stars, it is enough to makehim happy just to look at the stars. He cansay to himself, 'Somewhere, my flower isthere...'

But if the sheep eats the flower, in onemoment all his stars will be darkened... Andyou think that is not important!"

»Wenn einer eine Blume liebt, die es nurein einziges Mal gibt auf allen Millionen undMillionen Sternen, dann genügt es ihm völlig,daß er zu ihnen hinaufschaut, um glücklich zusein. Er sagt sich: Meine Blume ist da oben,irgendwo... Wenn aber das Schaf die Blume frißt, so istes für ihn, als wären plötzlich alle Sterneausgelöscht! Und das soll nicht wichtig sein?

He could not say anything more. His wordswere choked by sobbing. The night had fallen. I had let my toolsdrop from my hands. Of what moment nowwas my hammer, my bolt, or thirst, or death?On one star, one planet, my planet, the Earth,there was a little prince to be comforted. Itook him in my arms, and rocked him. I saidto him:

: »Die Blume, die du liebst, ist nicht inGefahr... Ich werde ihm einen Maulkorbzeichnen, deinem Schaf... Ich werde dir einenZaun für deine Blume zeichnen... Ich...

I did not know what to say to him. I felt Ich wußte nicht, was ich noch sagen sollte.

awkward and blundering. I did not know howI could reach him, where I could overtakehim and go on hand in hand with him oncemore. It is such a secret place, the land of tears.

Ich kam mir sehr ungeschickt vor. Ichwußte nicht, wie ich zu ihm gelangen,wo ich ihn erreichen konnte.

I soon learned to know this flower better.On the little prince's planet the flowers hadalways been very simple. They had only onering of petals; they took up no room at all;they were a trouble to nobody.

One morning they would appear in the grass,and by night they would have fadedpeacefully away. But one day, from a seed blown from no oneknew where, a new flower had come up; andthe little prince had watched very closelyover this small sprout which was not like anyother small sprouts on his planet. It might, you see, have been a new kind ofbaobab. The shrub soon stopped growing, andbegan to get ready to produce a flower.

The little prince, who was present at the firstappearance of a huge bud, felt at once thatsome sort of miraculous apparition mustemerge from it. But the flower was notsatisfied to complete the preparations for herbeauty in the shelter of her green chamber. She chose her colours with the greatest care.She dressed herself slowly. She adjusted herpetals one by one. She did not wish to go outinto the world all rumpled, like the fieldpoppies. It was only in the full radiance of her beautythat she wished to appear. Oh, yes! She was acoquettish creature! And her mysteriousadornment lasted for days and days. Then one morning, exactly at sunrise, shesuddenly showed herself. And, after workingwith all this painstaking precision, sheyawned and said:

Der kleine Prinz, der der Entwicklung einerriesigen Knospe beiwohnte, fühlte wohl, esmüsse eine wunderbare Erscheinung aus ihrhervorgehen, aber die Blume wurde nichtfertig damit, sich in ihrer grünen Kammer aufihre Schönheit vorzubereiten. Sie wählte ihre Farben mit Sorgfalt, sie zogsich langsam an, sie ordnete ihreBlütenblätter eins nach dem andern. Siewollte nicht wie die Mohnblüten ganzzerknittert herauskommen.

Sie wollte nicht früher erscheinen als imvollen Ornat ihrer Schönheit. Nun ja! siewollte gefallen. Ihre geheimnisvolle Toilettehatte also Tage und Tage gedauert. Und dann, eines Morgens, gerade zurStunde des Sonnenaufganges, hatte sie sichenthüllt. Und die, die mit solcher Genauigkeitgearbeitet hatte, sagte gähnend:

On our earth we are obviously much toosmall to clean out our volcanoes. That is whythey bring no end of trouble upon us.

The little prince also pulled up, with acertain sense of dejection, the last little shootsof the baobabs. He believed that he wouldnever want to return. But on this last morning all these familiartasks seemed very precious to him. And whenhe watered the flower for the last time, andprepared to place her under the shelter of herglass globe, he realized that he was veryclose to tears.

For what the king fundamentally insistedupon was that his authority should berespected. He tolerated no disobedience. He was an absolute monarch. But, because hewas a very good man, he made his ordersreasonable.

And because he felt a bit sad as heremembered his little planet which he hadforsaken, he plucked up his courage to askthe king a favour:

From time to time you will condemn him todeath. Thus his life will depend on yourjustice. But you will pardon him on each occasion;for he must be treated thriftily. He is the onlyone we have."

»Ah, ah, schau, schau, ein Bewundererkommt zu Besuch!« rief der Eitle vonweitem, sobald er des kleinen Prinzenansichtig wurde. Denn für die Eitlen sind die anderen LeuteBewunderer.

"Good morning," said the little prince."That is a queer hat you are wearing."

»Guten Tag«, sagte der kleine Prinz. »Sie haben einen spaßigen Hut auf.«

"It is a hat for salutes," the conceited manreplied. "It is to raise in salute when peopleacclaim me. Unfortunately, nobody at all everpasses this way."

»Der ist zum Grüßen«, antwortete ihm der Eitle. »Er ist zum Grüßen, wenn man mir zujauchzt. Unglücklicherweise kommt hier niemand vorbei.«

"Yes?" said the little prince, who did notunderstand what the conceited man wastalking about.

"Clap your hands, one against the other,"the conceited man now directed him.

The little prince clapped his hands. Theconceited man raised his hat in a modestsalute.

After five minutes of this exercise the littleprince grew tired of the game's monotony.

"I admire you," said the little prince,shrugging his shoulders slightly, "but what isthere in that to interest you so much?" And the little prince went away. "The grown-ups are certainly very odd," hesaid to himself, as he continued on hisjourney.

The next planet was inhabited by a tippler.This was a very short visit, but it plunged thelittle prince into deep dejection.

"What are you doing there?" he said to thetippler, whom he found settled down insilence before a collection of empty bottlesand also a collection of full bottles.

»Was machst du da?« fragte er den Säufer,den er stumm vor einer Reihe leerer und einerReihe voller Flaschen sitzend antraf.

"I am drinking," replied the tippler, with alugubrious air.

»Ich trinke«, antwortete der Säufer mitdüsterer Miene.

"Why are you drinking?" demanded thelittle prince.

"So that I may forget," replied the tippler. »Um zu vergessen«, antwortete der Säufer. "Forget what?" inquired the little prince,who already was sorry for him.

"Forget that I am ashamed," the tipplerconfessed, hanging his head.

"Ashamed of drinking!" The tipplerbrought his speech to an end, and shuthimself up in an impregnable silence. And the little prince went away, puzzled. "The grown-ups are certainly very, veryodd," he said to himself, as he continued onhis journey.

The fourth planet belonged to abusinessman. This man was so muchoccupied that he did not even raise his headat the little prince's arrival.

"Good morning," the little prince said tohim. "Your cigarette has gone out."

"Three and two make five. Five and sevenmake twelve. Twelve and three make fifteen.Good morning. Fifteen and seven make

I haven't time to light it again. Twenty-sixand five make thirty-one. Phew! Then that makes five-hundred-and-onemillion, six-hundred-twenty-two-thousand,seven-hundred-thirty-one."

"Five hundred million what?" asked thelittle prince.

»Fünfhundert Millionen wovon?«

"Eh? Are you still there? Five-hundred-and-one million—I can't stop... I have somuch to do! I am concerned with matters ofconsequence. I don't amuse myself withbalderdash. Two and five make seven..."

»Wie? Du bist immer noch da?Fünfhunderteine Million von...ich weiß nichtmehr... ich habe so viel Arbeit! Ich bin einernsthafter Mann, ich gebe mich nicht mitKindereien ab. Zwei und fünf ist sieben...«

"Five-hundred-and-one million what?"repeated the little prince, who never in hislife had let go of a question once he hadasked it. The businessman raised his head.

"During the fifty-four years that I haveinhabited this planet, I have been disturbedonly three times. The first time was twenty-two years ago,when some giddy goose fell from goodnessknows where. He made the most frightful noise thatresounded all over the place, and I made fourmistakes in my addition. The second time, eleven years ago, I wasdisturbed by an attack of rheumatism. I don't get enough exercise. I have no time forloafing. The third time—well, this is it! I was saying,then, five-hundred-and-one millions—"

"Millions of what?" »Millionen wovon?«: The businessman suddenly realized thatthere was no hope of being left in peace untilhe answered this question.

"Millions of those little objects," he said,"which one sometimes sees in the sky."

There is no time for idle dreaming in mylife."

"And what good does it do you to own thestars?"

"It does me the good of making me rich." »Das macht mich reich.« "And what good does it do you to be rich?" »Und was hast du vom Reichsein?« "It makes it possible for me to buy morestars, if any are discovered."

"This man," the little prince said tohimself, "reasons a little like my poortippler..." Nevertheless, he still had some morequestions.

Der da, sagte sich der kleine Prinz, denktein bißchen wie mein Säufer. Indessen stellteer noch weitere Fragen:

"How is it possible for one to own thestars?"

»Wie kann man die Sterne besitzen?«

"To whom do they belong?" thebusinessman retorted, peevishly.

"I don't know. To nobody." »Ich weiß nicht. Niemandem.« "Then they belong to me, because I wasthe first person to think of it."

»Dann gehören sie mir, ich habe als ersterdaran gedacht.«

"Is that all that is necessary?" »Das genügt?« "Certainly. When you find a diamond thatbelongs to nobody, it is yours. When youdiscover an island that belongs to nobody, itis yours. When you get an idea before any one else,you take out a patent on it: it is yours. Sowith me: I own the stars, because nobody elsebefore me ever thought of owning them."

"And what do you do with them?" »Und was machst du damit?« "I administer them," replied thebusinessman. "I count them and recountthem. It is difficult. But I am a man who isnaturally interested in matters ofconsequence."

"And that is all?" »Und das ist alles?« "That is enough," said the businessman. »Das genügt.« "It is entertaining," thought the littleprince. "It is rather poetic. But it is of nogreat consequence." On matters of consequence, the littleprince had ideas which were very differentfrom those of the grown-ups.

"I myself own a flower," he continued hisconversation with the businessman, "which Iwater every day. I own three volcanoes, which I clean outevery week (for I also clean out the one thatis extinct; one never knows). It is of some use to my volcanoes, and it is ofsome use to my flower, that I own them. Butyou are of no use to the stars..."

»Ich«, sagte er noch, »ich besitze eineBlume, die ich jeden Tag begieße.

Ich besitze drei Vulkane, die ich jede Wochekehre. Denn ich kehre auch den Erloschenen.Man kann nie wissen. Es ist gut für meine Vulkane und gut fürmeine Blume, daß ich sie besitze. Aber dubist für die Sterne zu nichts nütze...«

The businessman opened his mouth, but hefound nothing to say in answer. And the littleprince went away. "The grown-ups are certainly altogetherextraordinary," he said simply, talking tohimself as he continued on his journey.

The fifth planet was very strange. It wasthe smallest of all. There was just enoughroom on it for a street lamp and alamplighter.

Der fünfte Planet war sehr sonderbar. Erwar der kleinste von allen. Es war da geradePlatz genug für eine Straßenlaterne und einenLaternenanzünder.

The little prince was not able to reach anyexplanation of the use of a street lamp and alamplighter, somewhere in the heavens, on aplanet which had no people, and not onehouse. But he said to himself, nevertheless:

Der kleine Prinz konnte sich nicht erklären,wozu man irgendwo im Himmel, auf einemPlaneten ohne Haus und ohne Bewohner, eineStraßenlaterne und einen Laternenanzünderbraucht. Doch sagte er sich:

"It may well be that this man is absurd. Buthe is not so absurd as the king, the conceitedman, the businessman, and the tippler. For atleast his work has some meaning.

When he lights his street lamp, it is as if hebrought one more star to life, or one flower.When he puts out his lamp, he sends theflower, or the star, to sleep. That is a beautiful occupation. And since it is beautiful, it is truly useful."

When he arrived on the planet herespectfully saluted the lamplighter.

Es kann ganz gut sein, daß dieser Mann einbißchen verrückt ist. Doch ist er wenigerverrückt als der König, der Eitle, derGeschäftsmann und der Säufer. Seine Arbeithat wenigstens einen Sinn.

Wenn er seine Laterne anzündet, so ist es, alssetze er einen neuen Stern in die Welt, odereine Blume. Wenn er seine Laterne auslöscht,so schlafen Stern oder Blume ein. Das ist eine sehr hübsche Beschäftigung. Es ist auch wirklich nützlich, da es hübsch ist.

Als er auf dem Planeten ankam, grüßte erden Laternenanzünder ehrerbietig.

"Good morning. Why have you just put outyour lamp?"

»Guten Tag. Warum hast Du DeineLaterne eben ausgelöscht?« .

"Those are the orders," replied thelamplighter. "Good morning."

»Ich habe die Weisung«, antwortete derAnzünder. »Guten Tag.«

"What are the orders?" »Was ist das, die Weisung?« "The orders are that I put out my lamp.Good evening."

»Die Weisung, meine Laterneauszulöschen. Guten Abend.«

And he lighted his lamp again. Und er zündete sie wieder an "But why have you just lighted it again?" »Aber warum hast Du sie soeben wieder

angezündet?« "Those are the orders," replied thelamplighter.

»Das ist die Weisung.«, antwortete derAnzünder.

"I do not understand," said the little prince. »Ich verstehe nicht«, sagte der kleinePrinz.

"There is nothing to understand," said thelamplighter. "Orders are orders. Goodmorning."

»Da ist nichts zu verstehen« sagte derAnzünder. »Die Weisung ist eben dieWeisung. Guten Tag.«

And he put out his lamp. Then hemopped his forehead with a handkerchiefdecorated with red squares.

Und er löschte seine Laterne wieder aus.Dann trocknete er sich die Stirn mit einemrotkarierten Taschentuch.

"I follow a terrible profession. In the olddays it was reasonable. I put the lamp out inthe morning, and in the evening I lighted itagain. I had the rest of the day for relaxation and therest of the night for sleep."

»Ich tue da einen schrecklichen Dienst.Früher ging es vernünftig zu. Ich löschte amMorgen aus und zündete am Abend an. Den Rest des Tages hatte ich zum Ausruhnund den Rest der Nacht zum Schlafen...«

"And the orders have been changed sincethat time?"

»Seit damals wurde die Weisunggeändert?«

"The orders have not been changed," said »Die Weisung wurde nicht geändert« sagte

the lamplighter. "That is the tragedy! Fromyear to year the planet has turned morerapidly and the orders have not beenchanged!"

"It is not funny at all!" said thelamplighter. "While we have been talkingtogether a month has gone by."

"A month?" »Ein Monat?« "Yes, a month. Thirty minutes. Thirtydays. Good evening."

»Ja, dreißig Minuten. Dreißig Tage! GutenAbend.«

And he lighted his lamp again. As the little prince watched him, he feltthat he loved this lamplighter who was sofaithful to his orders. He remembered thesunsets which he himself had gone to seek, inother days, merely by pulling up his chair;and he wanted to help his friend.

"That doesn't do me much good," said thelamplighter. "The one thing I love in life is tosleep."

»Das hat nicht viel Witz«, sagte derAnzünder, »was ich im Leben liebe, ist derSchlaf.«

"Then you're unlucky," said the littleprince.

»Dann ist es aussichtslos«, sagte der kleinePrinz.

"I am unlucky," said the lamplighter."Good morning."

And he put out his lamp. "That man," said the little prince tohimself, as he continued farther on hisjourney, "that man would be scorned by allthe others: by the king, by the conceited man,by the tippler, by the businessman.Nevertheless he is the only one of them allwho does not seem to me ridiculous. Perhapsthat is because he is thinking of somethingelse besides himself." He breathed a sigh of regret, and said tohimself, again:

The sixth planet was ten times larger thanthe last one. It was inhabited by an oldgentleman who wrote voluminous books.

Der sechste Planet war zehnmal so groß. Erwar von einem alten Herrn bewohnt, derungeheure Bücher schrieb.

"Oh, look! Here is an explorer!" heexclaimed to himself when he saw the littleprince coming.

»Da schau! Ein Forscher!« rief er, als erden kleinen Prinzen sah.

The little prince sat down on the table andpanted a little. He had already travelled somuch and so far!

Der kleine Prinz setzte sich an den Tischund verschnaufte ein wenig. Er war schon soviel gereist!

"Where do you come from?" the old »Woher kommst Du?« fragte ihn der alte

gentleman said to him. Herr "What is that big book?" said the littleprince. "What are you doing?"

»Was ist das für ein dickes Buch?« sagteder kleine Prinz. »Was machen Sie da?«

"I am a geographer," said the oldgentleman.

»Ich bin Geograph«, sagte der alte Herr.

"What is a geographer?" asked the littleprince.

»Was ist das, ein Geograph?«

"A geographer is a scholar who knows thelocation of all the seas, rivers, towns,mountains, and deserts."

»Das ist ein Gelehrter, der weiß, wo sichdie Meere, die Ströme, die Städte, die Bergeund die Wüsten befinden.«

"That is very interesting," said the littleprince. "Here at last is a man who has a realprofession!" And he cast a look around him at the planetof the geographer. It was the mostmagnificent and stately planet that he hadever seen.

"Your planet is very beautiful," he said."Has it any oceans?"

"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer. »Das kann ich nicht wissen«, sagte derGeograph

"Ah!" The little prince was disappointed."Has it any mountains?"

"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer. »Das kann ich auch nicht wissen«, sagteder Geograph.

"And towns, and rivers, and deserts?" »Aber ihr seid Geograph! - Und Städte undFlüsse und Wüsten?« »

"I couldn't tell you that, either." »Auch das kann ich nicht wissen.« "But you are a geographer!" »Aber ihr seid doch Geograph!«

"Exactly," the geographer said. "But I amnot an explorer. I haven't a single explorer onmy planet. It is not the geographer who goesout to count the towns, the rivers, themountains, the seas, the oceans, and thedeserts. The geographer is much too important to goloafing about. He does not leave his desk. Buthe receives the explorers in his study.

He asks them questions, and he notes downwhat they recall of their travels. And if therecollections of any one among them seeminteresting to him, the geographer orders aninquiry into that explorer's moral character."

"Why is that?" »Warum das?« "Because an explorer who told lies wouldbring disaster on the books of the geographer.So would an explorer who drank too much."

»Weil ein Forscher, der lügt, in denGeographiebüchern Katastrophenherbeiführen würde. Und auch ein Forscher,der zuviel trinkt.«

"Why is that?" asked the little prince. »Wie das?«, fragte der kleine Prinz. "Because intoxicated men see double.Then the geographer would note down twomountains in a place where there was onlyone."

»Weil die Säufer doppelt sehen. DerGeograph würde dann zwei Bergeeinzeichnen, wo nur ein einziger vorhandenist.«

"I know some one," said the little prince,"who would make a bad explorer."

»Ich kenne einen«, sagte der kleine Prinz,»der wäre ein schlechter Forscher.«

"That is possible. Then, when the moralcharacter of the explorer is shown to be good,an inquiry is ordered into his discovery."

»Das ist möglich. Doch wenn die Moralitätdes Forschers gut zu sein scheint, macht maneine Untersuchung über seine Entdeckung.«

"One goes to see it?" »Geht man nachsehen?« "No. That would be too complicated. Butone requires the explorer to furnish proofs.For example, if the discovery in question isthat of a large mountain, one requires thatlarge stones be brought back from it." The geographer was suddenly stirred toexcitement.

»Nein. Das ist zu umständlich. Aber manverlangt vom Forscher, daß er Beweiseliefert. Wenn es sich zum Beispiel um dieEntdeckung eines großen Berges handelt,verlangt man, daß er große Steine mitbringt.« Plötzlich ereiferte sich der Geograph.

"But you—you come from far away! Youare an explorer! You shall describe yourplanet to me!"

»Und du, du kommst von weit her! Du bistein Forscher! Du wirst mir Deinen Planetenbeschreiben!«

And, having opened his big register, thegeographer sharpened his pencil. The recitalsof explorers are put down first in pencil. Onewaits until the explorer has furnished proofs,before putting them down in ink.

Und der Geograph schlug seinRegistrierbuch auf und spitzte einen Bleistift.Zuerst notiert man die Erzählungen derForscher mit Bleistift. Um sie mit Tinteaufzuschreiben, wartet man, bis der ForscherBeweise geliefert hat.

"Well?" said the geographer expectantly. »Nun?« fragte der Geograph. "Oh, where I live," said the little prince, "itis not very interesting. It is all so small. Ihave three volcanoes. Two volcanoes are active and the other isextinct. But one never knows."

»Oh, bei mir zu Hause«, sagte der kleinePrinz, »ist nicht viel los, da ist es ganz klein.Ich habe drei Vulkane. Zwei Vulkane in Tätigkeit und einenerloschenen. Aber man kann nie wissen.«

"One never knows," said the geographer. »Man weiß nie«, sagte der Geograph. "I have also a flower." »Ich habe auch eine Blume.« "We do not record flowers," said thegeographer.

»Wir schreiben Blumen nicht auf«, sagteder Geograph.

"Why is that? The flower is the mostbeautiful thing on my planet!"

"We do not record them," said thegeographer, "because they are ephemeral."

»Weil Blumen vergänglich sind.«

"What does that mean—'ephemeral'?" »Was heißt 'vergänglich'?« "Geographies," said the geographer, "arethe books which, of all books, are mostconcerned with matters of consequence. Theynever become old-fashioned. It is very rarely that a mountain changes itsposition. It is very rarely that an oceanempties itself of its waters. We write ofeternal things."

»Die Geographiebücher«, entgegnete derGeograph, »sind die wertvollsten von allenBüchern. Sie veralten nie.

"But extinct volcanoes may come to lifeagain," the little prince interrupted. "Whatdoes that mean— 'ephemeral'?"

»Aber die erloschenen Vulkane könnenwieder aufwachen«, unterbrach der kleinePrinz. »Was bedeutet 'vergänglich'?«

"Whether volcanoes are extinct or alive, itcomes to the same thing for us," said thegeographer. "The thing that matters to us isthe mountain. It does not change."

»Ob die Vulkane erloschen oder tätig sind,kommt für uns aufs gleiche hinaus«, sagte derGeograph. »Was für uns zählt, ist der Berg.Er verändert sich nicht.«

"But what does that mean—'ephemeral'?"repeated the little prince, who never in hislife had let go of a question, once he hadasked it.

»Aber was bedeutet 'vergänglich'?«wiederholte der kleine Prinz, der in seinemLeben noch nie auf eine einmal gestellteFrage verzichtet hatte.

"It means, 'which is in danger of speedydisappearance.'"

»Das heißt von baldigem Entschwindenbedroht'.«

"Is my flower in danger of speedydisappearance?"

»Ist meine Blume von baldigemEntschwinden bedroht?«

"Certainly it is." »Gewiß.« "My flower is ephemeral," the little princesaid to himself, "and she has only four thornsto defend herself against the world. And Ihave left her on my planet, all alone!".

That was his first moment of regret. But hetook courage once more

"What place would you advise me to visitnow?" he asked

"The planet Earth," replied the geographer. »Auf den Planeten Erde«, antwortete der

"It has a good reputation." Geograph, »er hat einen guten Ruf...« And the little prince went away, thinkingof his flower.

16 XVI So then the seventh planet was the Earth. The Earth is not just an ordinary planet!One can count, there, 111 kings (notforgetting, to be sure, the Negro kings amongthem), 7000 geographers, 900,000businessmen, 7,500,000 tipplers, 311,000,000conceited men—that is to say, about2,000,000,000 grown-ups.

To give you an idea of the size of theEarth, I will tell you that before the inventionof electricity it was necessary to maintain,over the whole of the six continents, averitable army of 462,511 lamplighters forthe street lamps.

Seen from a slight distance, that wouldmake a splendid spectacle. The movementsof this army would be regulated like those ofthe ballet in the opera. First would come theturn of the lamplighters of New Zealand andAustralia. Having set their lamps alight, thesewould go off to sleep. Next, the lamplighters of China and Siberiawould enter for their steps in the dance, andthen they too would be waved back into thewings. After that would come the turn of thelamplighters of Russia and the Indies;

then those of Africa and Europe; then thoseof South America; then those of SouthAmerica; then those of North America. And never would they make a mistake in theorder of their entry upon the stage. It wouldbe magnificent. Only the man who was in charge of thesingle lamp at the North Pole, and hiscolleague who was responsible for the singlelamp at the South Pole—only these twowould live free from toil and care: theywould be busy twice a year.

Der siebente Planet war also die Erde. Die Erde ist nicht irgendein Planet! Manzählt da hundertelf Könige, wenn man,wohlgemerkt, die Negerkönige nicht vergißt,siebentausend Geographen,neunhunderttausend Geschäftsleute,siebeneinhalb Millionen Säufer,dreihundertelf Millionen Eitle, kurz -ungefähr zwei Milliarden erwachsene Leute

Um euch einen Begriff von den Ausmaßender Erde zu geben, muß ich euch sagen, daßman vor der Erfindung der Elektrizität dortauf allen sechs Kontinenten zusammen eineganze Armee vonvierhundertzweiundsechzigtausendfünfhundertelf Laternenanzündern im Dienst hatte. Von einiger Entfernung aus gesehen,wirkte das prächtig. Die Bewegungen dieserArmee waren gedrillt, wie die einesOpernballetts. Den Reigen begannen dieAnzünder der neuseeländischen undaustralischen Laternen. Hatten sie ihreLampen angezündet, gingen sie schlafen. Dann traten die Laternenanzünder von Chinaund Sibirien zum Tanze an. Auch sieverschwanden hinter den Kulissen. Dannkamen die russischen und indischenLaternenanzünder an die Reihe.

Dann die von Afrika und Europa. Dann dievon Südamerika. Dann die von Nordamerika.

Und niemals irrten sie sich in der Reihenfolgeihres Auftritts. Es war großartig.

Nur der Anzünder der einzigen Laterne amNordpol und sein Kollege von der einzigenLaterne am Südpol führten ein Leben vollMüßiggang und Gemütlichkeit: sie arbeitetenzweimal im Jahr.

When one wishes to play the wit, hesometimes wanders a little from the truth. Ihave not been altogether honest in what Ihave told you about the lamplighters. And I realize that I run the risk of giving afalse idea of our planet to those who do notknow it. Men occupy a very small place upon theEarth. If the two billion inhabitants who people itssurface were all to stand upright andsomewhat crowded together, as they do forsome big public assembly, they could easilybe put into one public square twenty mileslong and twenty miles wide.

All humanity could be piled up on a smallPacific islet. The grown-ups, to be sure, will not believeyou when you tell them that. They imaginethat they fill a great deal of space.

They fancy themselves as important as thebaobabs. You should advise them, then, tomake their own calculations. They adore figures, and that will please them.But do not waste your time on this extra task.It is unnecessary. You have, I know,confidence in me. When the little prince arrived on the Earth,he was very much surprised not to see anypeople. He was beginning to be afraid he had come tothe wrong planet, when a coil of gold, thecolour of the moonlight, flashed across thesand.

Will man geistreich sein, dann kommt esvor, daß man ein bißchen aufschneidet. Ichwar nicht ganz aufrichtig, als ich euch vonden Laternenanzündern erzählte. Ich laufe Gefahr, denen, die unseren Planetennicht kennen, ein falsches Bild von ihm zugeben. Die Menschen benutzen nur sehr wenigRaum auf der Erde. Wenn die zweiMilliarden Einwohner, die die Erdebevölkern, sich aufrecht und ein bißchengedrängt hinstellten, wie bei einerVolksversammlung etwa, kämen sie aufeinem öffentlichen Platz von zwanzig MeilenLänge und zwanzig Meilen Breite leichtunter. Man könnte die Menschheit auf dergeringsten kleinen Insel des PazifischenOzeans zusammenpferchen. Die großenLeute werden Euch das freilich nicht glauben.Sie bilden sich ein, viel Platz zu brauchen.

Sie nehmen sich wichtig wieAffenbrotbäume. Gebt ihnen also den Rat,sich's auszurechnen

Sie beten die Zahlen an, das wird ihnengefallen. Aber ihr sollt Eure Zeit nicht damitverlieren. Es ist zwecklos. Ihr habt Vertrauenzu mir. Einmal auf der Erde, wunderte sich derkleine Prinz, niemanden zu sehen.

Er fürchtete schon, sich im Planeten geirrt zuhaben, als ein mondfarbener Ring sich imSande bewegte.

"Good evening," said the little princecourteously.

»Gute Nacht«, sagte der kleine Prinz aufs Geratewohl.

"Good evening," said the snake. »Gute Nacht«, sagte die Schlange. "What planet is this on which I have comedown?" asked the little prince.

»Auf welchen Planeten bin ich gefallen?« fragte der kleine Prinz.

"This is the Earth; this is Africa," the snakeanswered.

»Auf die Erde, du bist in Afrika«, antwortete die Schlange.

"Ah! Then there are no people on theEarth?"

"This is the desert. There are no people in »Hier ist die Wüste. In den Wüsten ist

The little prince sat down on a stone, andraised his eyes toward the sky.

"I wonder," he said, "whether the stars areset alight in heaven so that one day each oneof us may find his own again... Look at myplanet. It is right there above us. But how faraway it is!"

"It is beautiful," the snake said. "What hasbrought you here?"

"I have been having some trouble with aflower," said the little prince.

"It is also lonely among men," the snakesaid.

The little prince gazed at him for a longtime.

"You are a funny animal," he said at last."You are no thicker than a finger..."

"But I am more powerful than the finger ofa king," said the snake.

The little prince smiled. Der kleine Prinz mußte lächeln. "You are not very powerful. You haven'teven any feet. You cannot even travel..."

"I can carry you farther than any shipcould take you," said the snake.

He twined himself around the little prince'sankle, like a golden bracelet.

"Whomever I touch, I send back to theearth from whence he came," the snake spokeagain. "But you are innocent and true, andyou come from a star..."

"I solve them all," said the snake. »Ich löse sie alle«, sagte die Schlange. And they were both silent. Und sie schwiegen.

The little prince crossed the desert and metwith only one flower. It was a flower withthree petals, a flower of no account at all.

"Where are the men?" the little princeasked, politely.

The flower had once seen a caravanpassing.

"Men?" she echoed. "I think there are sixor seven of them in existence. I saw them,several years ago. But one never knowswhere to find them. The wind blows themaway. They have no roots, and that makestheir life very difficult."

»Die Menschen? Es gibt, glaube ich, sechsoder sieben. Ich habe sie vor Jahren gesehen.Aber man weiß nie, wo sie zu finden sind.Der Wind verweht sie. Es fehlen ihnen dieWurzeln, das ist sehr übel für sie.«

"Goodbye," said the little prince. »Adieu«, sagte der kleine Prinz "Goodbye," said the flower. »Adieu«, sagte die Blume.

After that, the little prince climbed a highmountain. The only mountains he had everknown were the three volcanoes, which cameup to his knees. And he used the extinctvolcano as a footstool. "From a mountain as high as this one," hesaid to himself, "I shall be able to see thewhole planet at one glance, and all thepeople..."

Der kleine Prinz stieg auf einen hohenBerg. Die einzigen Berge, die er kannte,waren die drei Vulkane, und sie reichten nurbis an die Knie, und den erloschenen Vulkanbenutze er als Schemel. Von einem Berg so hoch wie der da, sagte ersich, werde ich mit einemmal den ganzenPlaneten und alle Menschen sehen...

But he saw nothing, save peaks of rockthat were sharpened like needles.

Aber er sah nichts als die Nadeln spitzigerFelsen.

"Good morning," he said courteously. »Guten Tag«, sagte er aufs Geratewohl. "Good morning—Good morning—Goodmorning," answered the echo.

»Guten Tag... Guten Tag... Guten Tag…«,antwortete das Echo.

"Who are you?" said the little prince. »Wer bist Du?«, sagte der kleine Prinz. "Who are you—Who are you—Who areyou?" answered the echo.

»Wer bist Du... Wer bist Du... Wer bistDu...?«, antwortete das Echo.

"Be my friends. I am all alone," he said. »Seid meine Freunde, ich bin allein«, sagteer.

"I am all alone—all alone—all alone,"answered the echo.

»Ich bin allein... allein...allein...«antwortete das Echo.

"What a queer planet!" he thought. "It isaltogether dry, and altogether pointed, andaltogether harsh and forbidding. And thepeople have no imagination. They repeatwhatever one says to them... On my planet Ihad a flower; she always was the first to speak..."

Was für ein merkwürdiger Planet! dachteer da. Er ist ganz trocken, voller Spitzen undganz salzig. Und den Menschen fehlt es anPhantasie. Sie wiederholen, was man ihnensagt... Zu Hause hatte ich eine Blume:

But it happened that after walking for along time through sand, and rocks, and snow,the little prince at last came upon a road. Andall roads lead to the abodes of men.

Aber nachdem der kleine Prinz lange überden Sand, die Felsen und den Schneegewandert war, geschah es, daß er endlicheine Straße entdeckte. Und die Straßen führenzu Menschen.

"Good morning," he said. He wasstanding before a garden, all a-bloom withroses.

»Guten Tag«, sagte er. Da war einblühender Rosengarten.

"Good morning," said the roses. »Guten Tag«, sagten die Rosen.

The little prince gazed at them. They alllooked like his flower.

Der kleine Prinz sah sie an. Sie glichen alleseiner Blume.

"Who are you?" he demanded,thunderstruck.

»Wer seid ihr?« fragte er sie höchsterstaunt.

"We are roses," the roses said. »Wir sind Rosen«, sagten die Rosen.

And he was overcome with sadness. Hisflower had told him that she was the only oneof her kind in all the universe. And here werefive thousand of them, all alike, in one singlegarden!

»Ach!« sagte der kleine Prinz... Und er fühltesich sehr unglücklich. Seine Blume hatte ihmerzählt, daß sie auf der ganzen Welt einzig inihrer Art sei. Und siehe!, da warenfünftausend davon, alle gleich, in einemeinzigen Garten!

"She would be very much annoyed," hesaid to himself, "if she should see that... Shewould cough most dreadfully, and she wouldpretend that she was dying, to avoid beinglaughed at. And I should be obliged to pretend that I wasnursing her back to life—for if I did not dothat, to humble myself also, she would reallyallow herself to die..." Then he went on with his reflections: "Ithought that I was rich, with a flower that wasunique in all the world; and all I had was acommon rose. A common rose, and threevolcanoes that come up to my knees—andone of them perhaps extinct forever... Thatdoesn't make me a very great prince..."

Sie wäre sehr böse, wenn sie das sähe,sagte er sich... Sie würde fürchterlich hustenund so tun, als stürbe sie, um derLächerlichkeit zu entgehen. Und ich müßte wohl so tun, als pflegte ichsie, denn sonst ließe ich sie wirklich sterben,um auch mich zu beschämen... Dann sagte er sich noch: Ich glaubte, ichsei reich durch eine einzigartige Blume, undich besitze nur eine gewöhnliche Rose. Sieund meine drei Vulkane, die mir bis ans Kniereichen und von denen einer vielleicht fürimmer verloschen ist, das macht aus mirkeinen sehr großen Prinzen...

And he lay down in the grass and cried. Und er warf sich ins Gras und weinte.

"I am beginning to understand," said thelittle prince. "There is a flower... I think thatshe has tamed me..."

"It is possible," said the fox. "On the Earthone sees all sorts of things."

And then look: you see the grain-fields downyonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of nouse to me. The wheat fields have nothing tosay to me. And that is sad.

But you have hair that is the colour of gold.Think how wonderful that will be when youhave tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bringme back the thought of you. And I shall loveto listen to the wind in the wheat..."

Und dann schau! Du siehst da drüben dieWeizenfelder? Ich esse kein Brot. Für michist der Weizen zwecklos. Die Weizenfeldererinnern mich an nichts. Und das ist traurig.

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a longtime.

"Please—tame me!" he said. »Bitte... zähme mich!« sagte er. "I want to, very much," the little princereplied. "But I have not much time. I havefriends to discover, and a great many thingsto understand."

"One only understands the things that onetames," said the fox. "Men have no more timeto understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops.But there is no shop anywhere where one canbuy friendship, and so men have no friendsany more. If you want a friend, tame me..."

"It would have been better to come back atthe same hour," said the fox. "If, for example,you come at four o'clock in the afternoon,then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy.I shall feel happier and happier as the houradvances.

At four o'clock, I shall already be worryingand jumping about. I shall show you howhappy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall neverknow at what hour my heart is to be ready togreet you... One must observe the properrites..."

"What is a rite?" asked the little prince. »Was heißt 'fester Brauch'?«, sagte derkleine Prinz.

"Those also are actions too oftenneglected," said the fox. "They are whatmake one day different from other days, onehour from other hours. There is a rite, for example, among myhunters.

Every Thursday they dance with the villagegirls. So Thursday is a wonderful day for me! I cantake a walk as far as the vineyards. But if thehunters danced at just any time, every daywould be like every other day, and I shouldnever have any vacation at all."

Sie tanzen am Donnerstag mit dem Mädchendes Dorfes. Daher ist der Donnerstag der wunderbareTag. Ich gehe bis zum Weinberg spazieren.Wenn die Jäger irgendwann einmal zumTanze gingen, wären die Tage alle gleich undich hätte niemals Ferien.«

So the little prince tamed the fox. Andwhen the hour of his departure drew near—

So machte denn der kleine Prinz den Fuchsmit sich vertraut. Und als die Stunde desAbschieds nahe war:

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry." »Ach!« sagte der Fuchs, »ich werdeweinen.«

"It is your own fault," said the little prince."I never wished you any sort of harm; butyou wanted me to tame you..."

»Das ist deine Schuld«, sagte der kleinePrinz, »ich wünschte dir nichts Übles, aber duhast gewollt, daß ich dich zähme...«

"Yes, that is so," said the fox. »Gewiß«, sagte der Fuchs. "But now you are going to cry!" said thelittle prince.

"You are beautiful, but you are empty," hewent on. "One could not die for you. To besure, an ordinary passer-by would think thatmy rose looked just like you—the rose thatbelongs to me. But in herself alone she is more importantthan all the hundreds of you other roses:because it is she that I have watered; becauseit is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behindthe screen; because it is for her that I havekilled the caterpillars (except the two or threethat we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, whenshe grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimeswhen she said nothing. Because she is myrose.

"Good morning," said the little prince. Guten Tag«, sagte der kleine Prinz. "Good morning," said the merchant. This was a merchant who sold pills thathad been invented to quench thirst. You needonly swallow one pill a week, and you wouldfeel no need of anything to drink.

»Guten Tag«, sagte der Händler. Er handelte mit höchst wirksamen,durststillenden Pillen. Man schluckt jedeWoche eine und spürt überhaupt keinBedürfnis mehr, zu trinken.

"Why are you selling those?" asked thelittle prince.

»Warum verkaufst du das?« sagte derkleine Prinz.

"Because they save a tremendous amountof time," said the merchant. "Computationshave been made by experts. With these pills,you save fifty-three minutes in every week."

»Das ist eine große Zeitersparnis«, sagteder Händler. »Die Sachverständigen habenBerechnungen angestellt. Man erspartdreiundfünfzig Minuten in der Woche.«

"And what do I do with those fifty-threeminutes?"

It was now the eighth day since I had hadmy accident in the desert, and I had listenedto the story of the merchant as I was drinkingthe last drop of my water supply.

Es war am achten Tage nach meiner Pannein der Wüste und ich hörte gerade dieGeschichte vom Pillenverkäufer, als ich denletzten Tropfen meines Wasservorrates trank:

"Ah," I said to the little prince, "thesememories of yours are very charming; but Ihave not yet succeeded in repairing my plane;I have nothing more to drink; and I, too,should be very happy if I could walk at myleisure toward a spring of fresh water!"

»Ach«, sagte ich zum kleinen Prinzen,»deine Erinnerungen sind ganz hübsch, aberich habe mein Flugzeug noch nicht repariert,habe nichts mehr zu trinken und wäreglücklich, wenn auch ich ganz gemächlich zueinem Brunnen gehen könnte!«

"My friend the fox—" the little prince saidto me.

"My dear little man, this is no longer amatter that has anything to do with the fox!"

"Why not?" »Warum?« "Because I am about to die of thirst..." »Weil man vor Durst sterben wird ...« He did not follow my reasoning, and heanswered me:

"It is a good thing to have had a friend,even if one is about to die. I, for instance, amvery glad to have had a fox as a friend..."

"He has no way of guessing the danger," Isaid to myself. "He has never been eitherhungry or thirsty. A little sunshine is all he needs..." But he looked at me steadily, and repliedto my thought:

I made a gesture of weariness. It is absurdto look for a well, at random, in theimmensity of the desert. But nevertheless westarted walking.

When we had trudged along for severalhours, in silence, the darkness fell, and thestars began to come out. Thirst had made mea little feverish, and I looked at them as if Iwere in a dream. The little prince's last wordscame reeling back into my memory:

I did not understand this answer, but I saidnothing. I knew very well that it wasimpossible to cross-examine him. He was tired. He sat down. I sat downbeside him. And, after a little silence, hespoke again:

I replied, "Yes, that is so." And, withoutsaying anything more, I looked across theridges of sand that were stretched out beforeus in the moonlight.

"The desert is beautiful," the little princeadded.

And that was true. I have always loved thedesert. One sits down on a desert sand dune,sees nothing, hears nothing. Yet through thesilence something throbs, and gleams...

I was astonished by a suddenunderstanding of that mysterious radiation ofthe sands. When I was a little boy I lived inan old house, and legend told us that atreasure was buried there. To be sure, no one had ever known how tofind it; perhaps no one had ever even lookedfor it. But it cast an enchantment over thathouse. My home was hiding a secret in thedepths of its heart...

Mir war, als trüge ich ein zerbrechlichesKleinod. Es schien mir sogar, als gäbees nichts Zerbrechlicheres auf der Erde.

Ich betrachtete im Mondlicht diese blasseStirn, diese geschlossenen Augen, dieseim Winde zitternde Haarsträhne, undich sagte mir:

"Men," said the little prince, "set out ontheir way in express trains, but they do notknow what they are looking for. Then theyrush about, and get excited, and turn roundand round..." And he added:

But there was no village here, and I thought Imust be dreaming...

"It is strange," I said to the little prince."Everything is ready for use: the pulley, thebucket, the rope..."

He laughed, touched the rope, and set thepulley to working. And the pulley moaned,like an old weathervane which the wind haslong since forgotten.

"Do you hear?" said the little prince. "Wehave wakened the well, and it is singing..."

I hoisted the bucket slowly to the edge ofthe well and set it there—happy, tired as Iwas, over my achievement. The song of the pulley was still in my ears,and I could see the sunlight shimmer in thestill trembling water.

"I am thirsty for this water," said the littleprince. "Give me some of it to drink..."

And I understood what he had beenlooking for. I raised the bucket to his lips. He drank, hiseyes closed. It was as sweet as some specialfestival treat. This water was indeed a different thing fromordinary nourishment. Its sweetness was born of the walk under thestars, the song of the pulley, the effort of myarms. It was good for the heart, like a present.When I was a little boy, the lights of theChristmas tree, the music of the MidnightMass, the tenderness of smiling faces, used tomake up, so, the radiance of the gifts Ireceived.

Es war gut fürs Herz, wie ein Geschenk.Genau so machten, als ich ein Knabe war, dieLichter des Christbaums, die Musik derWeihnachtsmette, die Sanftmut des Lächelnsden eigentlichen Glanz der Geschenke aus,die ich erhielt.

"The men where you live," said the littleprince, "raise five thousand roses in the samegarden—and they do not find in it what theyare looking for."

I had drunk the water. I breathed easily. Atsunrise the sand is the colour of honey. Andthat honey colour was making me happy, too.What brought me, then, this sense of grief?

The little prince flushed again. And I added, with some hesitancy: "Perhaps it was because of theanniversary?"

The little prince flushed once more. Henever answered questions—but when oneflushes does that not mean "Yes"?

But I was not reassured. I remembered thefox. One runs the risk of weeping a little, ifone lets himself be tamed...

Beside the well there was the ruin of an oldstone wall. When I came back from my work,the next evening, I saw from some distanceaway my little price sitting on top of a wall,with his feet dangling. And I heard him say:

Another voice must have answered him,for he replied to it:

I continued my walk toward the wall. Atno time did I see or hear anyone. The littleprince, however, replied once again:

I was only twenty meters from the wall,and I still saw nothing. After a silence thelittle prince spoke again:

"You have good poison? You are sure thatit will not make me suffer too long?"

I dropped my eyes, then, to the foot of thewall—and I leaped into the air. There beforeme, facing the little prince, was one of thoseyellow snakes that take just thirty seconds tobring your life to an end. Even as I was digging into my pocked to getout my revolver I made a running step back. But, at the noise I made, the snake let himselfflow easily across the sand like the dyingspray of a fountain, and, in no apparent hurry, disappeared, with alight metallic sound, among the stones.

I reached the wall just in time to catch mylittle man in my arms; his face was white assnow.

I had loosened the golden muffler that healways wore. I had moistened his temples,and had given him some water to drink. Andnow I did not dare ask him any morequestions. He looked at me very gravely, and put hisarms around my neck. I felt his heart beatinglike the heart of a dying bird, shot withsomeone's rifle...

And he laughed again. Und er lachte wieder. "It will be as if, in place of the stars, I hadgiven you a great number of little bells thatknew how to laugh..."

And he laughed again. Then he quicklybecame serious:

Dann verwandeln sichdie Schellen alle in Tränen! ... Das ist ein sehr großes Geheimnis. Füreuch, die ihr den kleinen Prinzen auch liebt,wie für mich, kann nichts auf der Weltunberührt bleiben, wenn irgendwo, man weißnicht wo, ein Schaf, das wir nicht kennen,eine Rose vielleicht gefressen hat, odervielleicht nicht gefressen hat ...

Schaut den Himmel an. Fragt euch: Hat dasSchaf die Blume gefressen oder nicht? Jaoder nein? Und ihr werdet sehen, wie sichalles verwandelt ... Aber keiner von den großen Leuten wirdjemals verstehn, daß das eine so großeBedeutung hat!
