Friendship is about whom you want to think with.

The different forms of working and thinking together and to develop projects in collaborations have been a major subject in my artistic practice for the last couple of years.

I work in various constallations and collaborations - mostly together with Ariane Koch - in the field of performance based on textual concepts and with Stingray Editions in the context of writing, editing and printed matters. And with Isabel Peña I recently initiated the project «Hidden Poems» where artists from Argentina and Switzerland worked with the library of Victoria Ocampo in Buenos Aires. Being inspired and shaped from the thoughts of Céline Condorellis rich philosphical discours on friendship and support structures, one could say that friendship is about allegiance and shifting. You choose who you want to be with and by doing so you choose them and their ideas, works and projects, it does mean that you are making a decision, which is inherently of a political nature. In friendship is an element of taking sides, of making common cause, a sense of solidarity, or being loyal and not just to the people, but to the cause they embrace.

I see friendship as a support, as an essential potential for a political, feminist and collaborative form of work and as something that tries to form solidarity apart from patriarchic structures. I am interested in the artwork as a situation and if it’s historically represented by a memory or a relic. Mostly my projects are documented with posters, books, concepts, publications, conversations or the performed text itself. The text is usually the starting point, the heart and the lasting.

Sarina Scheidegger (*1985 in Bern/CH) is based in Basel working as an artist, writer and editor in different collaborations. After she finished her master degree in 2015 at the University of Arts Bern (Master of Contemporary Art Practice) and worked as a research assistant at the University of Art and Design Basel for four years, she spent 2016 seven months in Buenos Aires, Argentina with the «Atelier Mondial / SKK scholarship». Together with Ariane Koch she received the work grant from the city Basel 2015/2016 for their collaborative performance projects which are still an ongoing practice. In 2012, she received the «Swiss Performance Award» with the work «To Forget Is To Remember» and in 2011, she was awarded a scholarship for a residency in Leipzig (DE). In collaboration with Chantal Küng and Nora Locher she organizes the series «Rooftop Readings» on various rooftops in Basel. In 2016 she founded «Stingray Editions» together with Kambiz Shafei to publish different formats and editions by various artists.

Her work was shown, among others at Crisper (Bogota), Swiss Art Awards (Basel), Kunsthalle Basel (Basel), Aargauer Kunsthaus (Aarau), Kaserne Basel (Basel), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Ausstellungsraum Klingental (Basel), IPA Performancefestival (Istanbul), Kunsthalle Tropical (Iceland) and Gallery X.L.A.M (Voronezh). Upcoming exhibitions in 2018/2019 are the Open Studios at FLORA (Bogota), La Casita (Bogota), BINZ39 (Zürich).

She is currently in the residency FLORA ars + natura in Bogota (COL) with the program «Coincidencia» by Pro Helvetia.

NOSOTRXS, CUERPOS DE AGUAA performance with Jimena CroceriCrispr Bogota, cur. Camilo Pachon, 2018

For the performance «NOSOTRXS, CUERPOS DE AGUA» Jimena Croceri and Sarina Scheidegger have been developing a variety of sounds and noises coming from different sources like objects, recordings, live voices and texts. All of them connect in their own way to fluid conditions which are among others inherent in our bodies, the sea, (sound) waves or coconuts. Not only are these fluids inherent in our bodies but moreover share parts of each other between them. Being inspired by the text «Bodies of water» by Astrida Neimanis - where she describes the pathway of a glass of water and how this glass of water we drink makes its way to the filtration plant towards hydroelectric power to an aquifer until it ends in a bottle of water from which we may drink again – the artists have tied their elements of the performance to this fluidity and the movement of liquids.

ROSA & LOUISEA Feminist Manifest in Dialogues by Ariane Koch and Sarina ScheideggerPerformance, since 2014

Performers: Sophie Brunner, Ana Castaño Almendral, Anna Christen, Judith Cuénod, Sima Djabar Zadegan, Moïra Gilliéron, Sherin Hegazy, Lilli Lorenz, Susan Reznik, Salma Said

Shown at: Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Espace Niki de Saint Phalle (Fribourg), Kocherpark (Bern), Well Well Well (Wien), Haus für elektronische Künste (Basel), Plattform 16 (Zürich), Luzerner Theater (Luzern), Kunsthaus Langenthal (Langenthal), Kunstmuseum Solothurn (Solothurn), Kunstraum Niederösterreich (Wien), Pavillion Pro Helvetia Kaserne (Basel), Theater Is A Must (Alexandria), Kaserne Basel (Basel)

The examination with the structures of the feminist discourse constitutes the foundation of the manifest which is continuously rewritten by Ariane Koch and Sarina Scheidegger. The version I-X of the dialogic piece were shown in different stages and contexts as a performance — spoken by two performers — and as poster edition — exposed in the public space as well as in the exhibition space. In 2018 the work was modified with two artists from Egypt as well as one performer from Switzerland and shown in the theater context, this collaboration and exchange with different views lead to a presentation at Kaserne Basel in autumn 2018.

LOOKING FOR FRITZPerformance by Ariane Koch and Sarina ScheideggerPublic Space, Basel, 2013-2015

Authors: Fabian Grossenbacher, Ulrike Kiessling, Fritz Rösli, Marcel Schwald, Andreas Thierstein, Barbara Van der Meulen-Kunz

Performers: Fiorina Brotbeck, Meret Bodamer, Daniela Brugger, Ana Castaño Almendral, Anna Christen, Judith Cuénod, Sima Djabar Zadegan Chantal Dubs, Elke Füllhaas, Max Gnant, Raphaela Grolimund, Lucien HaugGordon Jäntsch, Svenja Koch, Könige Kleiner Länder, Ephraim Meister, Nora Locher, Yuri Maurer, Sibylle Mumenthaler, Johanna Raimund, Susan Reznik, Olivia Ronzani, Isabella Scherer, Norwin Tharyil, UFO

On four Saturdays to each season of the year there occured a performative walk. The strolls of the authors formed the basis for a collective text fragment which was written over the period of two years. The performers choosed extracts of the text which were connected with specific places in Basel. The selected places resulted in a route through the city.During four hours the performers were moving on this route speaking these texts in groups or alone. The collective text whose root is the urban space was feedbacked into the city. The repetitive realisation of the concept allowed the visitors to observe the transformation of the text and the urban space within the passed time. Four new ways through and four new perspectives on the city were created.

ENCYCLOPEDIA 1–5, 2016City Buenos Aires (ARG)

The «Encyclopedia 1-5» is a poster series developed during the residendcy in Buenos Aires and then presented in the public space of La Boca/Buenos Aires including a lecture performance which was shown in the exhibition «Friends, friends» in the space «laboca783» of Martin Mele and Celina Jure.Which words are important for learning a new language? Which are being chosen and which are being left out? The «Encyclopedia 1-5» is a work connected to learning a new language and finding new definitions for terms which inherently have a history. The posters were produced with a local letterpress printer and then pasted with a group of helpers in the neighbourhood of the residency. The posters could only be seen in the public space whereas the lecture was held twice in the exhibition space.

HIDDEN POEMSPublication & Exhibition with Isabel PeñaVilla Ocampo Buenos Aires (ARG) & Kaskadenkondensator Basel (CH), 2017

With: Alejandra Bocquel (ARG), Julían D‘Angiolillo (ARG), Cecilia Pavon (ARG), Julia Mensch (ARG), Isabel Peña (ARG), Cucurto Washington, Romy Rüegger (CH), Stéphanie Rosianu (CH), Riikka Tauriainen (FIN/ CH), Sarina Scheidegger (CH), Andreas Thierstein (CH), Patrick Savolainen (CH) in collaboration with Kambiz Shafei (IRN/CH)

«Hidden Poems» is gathering artists and writers from Argentina and Switzerland who worked with the library of Victoria Ocampo at Villa Ocampo in San Isidro/Buenos Aires in Argentina. The artists and writers have been asked to choose a book and within it a specific page from which they extracted a «Hidden Poem». «Hidden Poems» works with archives of books, raising questions on how books are writing our history and how we can rework, rewrite and renew an archive.

STINGRAY EDITIONS with Kambiz Shafeisince 2015

Stingray Editions was founded 2015 in Basel by Sarina Scheideggerand Kambiz Shafei as a platform for varying editions with an emphasis on collaborations with artists, writers, musicians and scientists. Stingray Editions develops several projects in a multitude of shapes, dimensions and contexts. At the heart of these collective collaborations, lies a dialogue which defines the format of each edition individually. The divergent forms of these editions reflect the nature and character of the stingray itself – a creature which can alter and adapt without losing its existence.

We realized several projects in the last three years working and collaborationg among others with:Nino Baumgartner, Eduardo Navarro, Judith Kakon, Sophie Jung, Louise Guerra, Delphine Chapuis Schmitz, Anahita Razmi, Ariane Koch, Nicolas Raufaste, Raphaela Grolimund, Nele Stecher, Martin Chramosta, Pedro Wirz, Silas Heizmann, Clare Kenny, Hannah Weinberger and many more.

OPPRESSED BY PRIVILEGED / PRIVILEGED BY OPPRESSIONPerformance & VinylAusstellungsraum Klingental & Kunsthalle Basel, 2017/2018

OPPRESSED BY PRIVILEGE and PRIVILEGED BY OPPRESSION were the names of two bands performing their inaugural concert at Ausstellungsraum Klingental in June 2017 – simultaneously. Previous to any rehearsals and in accordance with democratic principles, the public was invited by an open call to submit texts in response to the respective band names. The two bands used the submissions as the raw material to adapt and interpret musically and later present it on stage. All original texts are compiled within a publication. In 2017 each band recorded three songs and they were released in vinyl with the label «A Tree in a Field Records» at Kunsthalle Basel in 2018.
