Liebe gäste und Freunde des Rock That Swing Festivals,

Packende Tanzshows, heiße Musik, originelle workshops und nam-

hafte Trainer – das Rock That Swing Festival bietet auch dieses Mal

wieder unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten, zu groovigem Big Band Sound

und fetzigem Rock'n'Roll in lockerer atmosphäre das Tanzbein zu

schwingen. und damit nicht genug: Das Festival, das bereits zum 11.

Mal stattfindet, hat sich mittlerweile zu einem echten highlight für

Tanzbegeisterte und -interessierte entwickelt. Das ist kein wunder,

verkörpern doch Swing und Rock'n'Roll eine einzigartige Lebendig-

keit und Leichtigkeit, die seit einiger Zeit auch hierzulande wieder

wachsenden Zuspruch finden.

Damit passt das Festival bestens zu München, denn in der bayeri-

schen Landeshauptstadt ist die Tradition dieser legendären Tanzepo-

che noch bis in die gegenwart zu spüren. Schon ab 1945 gab es hier

Jazzclubs für amerikanische Soldaten. und heute bietet das elegante

ambiente des wiedereröffneten Deutschen Theaters dem Festival den

idealen Rahmen für spektakuläre Shows in Lindy hop, Boogie woo-

gie, charleston und vielen anderen zeittypischen Rhythmen.

Die Begeisterung für diese Tänze in München ist gerade auch ein

Zeichen für das vielfältige kulturelle interesse der Münchnerinnen

und Münchner. und damit passt das Festival auch bestens zu der

abermals breit gefächerten und äußerst vielfältigen Palette von Ver-

anstaltungen, die während des Faschings stattfinden und auch 2016

die Fünfte Jahreszeit in München in bewährter weise bereichern. in

diesem Sinne wünsche ich dem Rock That Swing Festival 2016 viele

schwungvolle Momente und heiße alle gäste und Mitwirkende in

München recht herzlich willkommen.

Dear guests and friends of the Rock That Swing Festival,

once more the Rock That Swing Festival offers you enthralling

dance-shows, hot music, groundbreaking workshops, renowned

trainers, and endless opportunities to shake a leg in time to the

sounds of grooving big bands and rocking combos.

as if that weren't enough, now in its eleventh year, the RTSF has long

become the highlight for dance-mad enthusiasts. This comes as no

surprise; swing and rock 'n' roll are true embodiments of a unique

blend of vibrancy and easy-going which has been growing in popu-

larity here for some time.

Munich and the festival are such a good match, as the heritage of

this legendary dance era can still be strongly felt in Bavaria's capital.

From 1945 on, there were jazz-clubs for the uS soldiers, and today

the elegant ambience of the re-opened Deutsches Theater graces

the RTSF with the perfect venue for spectacular shows in Lindy hop,

Boogie woogie, charleston and many other contemporary rhythms.

The enthusiasm for these dances in Munich has always been a clear

indication of our rich cultural interest. The festival also perfectly

complements our highly diverse and multifaceted palette of events

during the 2016 carnival period, enhancing what is known in Munich

as the 'fifth season' with proven quality. in this spirit, i wish the Rock

That Swing Festival fantastic swinging moments and i would like to

extend a heartfelt welcome to all guests and participants here in

Munich.

welcome to the 11th Rock That Swing Festival! we are looking for-

ward to celebrating another spectacular festival with guests from all

around the world. after an epic 10th anniversary last year, a new de-

cade begins, but our goals haven’t changed. Like the past years we

have invited a mixture of the best dancers and musicians. Together

with a fabulous audience we will continue to live up to our slogan:

epic, classic wild!

letzten Jahr, beginnt eine neue Dekade, aber unsere Ziele haben

sich nicht verändert. wie in den letzten Jahren haben wir wieder

eine tolle Mischung der besten Tänzer und Musiker eingeladen, um

zusammen mit einem fabelhaften Publikum unserem Slogan gerecht

zu werden: epic, classic, wild!

Swing Dance LegenDS

W we are very grateful to have had the chance to

meet many of the old music and dance masters

in person and witness their passion, inspiration

and dedication. They are role models for us in

many ways. Sadly, we have lost many of those special dancers and

people in the last few years.

Last august we lost another dear friend: Ray hirsch. he attended

many of our Rock That Swing Festivals and every time he aston-

ished us all. we will always remember when he grabbed Bärbl,

jumping into the one o'clock Jam battle, and when he didn’t hes-

itate to join the Fast Feet contest at the age of 93. unfortunately,

after his wife passed away his health rapidly declined. Still, he

so much enjoyed being on the dance floor and amongst younger

dancers. his daughter Jana told us of his excitement to come

back to Rock That Swing last year, commenting that it gave him

another year. So we want to thank everyone who made this pos-

sible. we would have loved to give him many more years. we miss

him very much, but remember his positive attitude, his jokes and

his infectious smile.

SwingTanZ-LegenDen

W ir sind sehr dankbar, dass wir die außergewöhn-

liche chance hatten, viele der Tanz- und Musik-

altmeister kennenlernen zu können. Mit ihrer

Leidenschaft, inspiration und hingabe sind sie

unsere Vorbilder in vielerlei hinsicht. Leider sind viele dieser beson-

deren Tänzer und Personen in den letzten Jahren von uns gegangen.

Letzten august haben wir einen weiteren geschätzten Freund ver-

loren – Ray hirsch. er war oft als ehrengast beim Rock That Swing

Festival. wir werden uns immer daran erinnern, wie er – im alter von

93 Jahren – mit Bärbl um ein uhr morgens in die Jam Battle sprang

und nicht zögerte, beim Fast Feet Turnier mitzumachen! Leider ist

sein körper nach dem Tod seiner Frau rapide schwächer geworden.

er genoss es aber immer noch sehr, mit den jungen Tänzern auf der

Tanzfläche zu sein. Seine Tochter Jana erzählte, dass er total aufge-

regt war, als er letztes Jahr wieder eingeladen wurde. Dies hätte ihm

ein weiteres Lebensjahr geschenkt. wir bedanken uns bei allen, die

dies möglich gemacht haben. gerne hätten wir ihm noch viele weitere

Jahre geschenkt. wir vermissen ihn sehr. Seine positive art, sein hu-

mor und sein Lachen werden uns aber immer in erinnerung bleiben.

Da es etwas ganz besonderes ist, diese Legenden persönlich zu

treffen, ist es uns auch so wichtig, Tänzer aus der goldenen Zeit des

Swing und Rock’n’Roll als ehrengäste zum Rock That Swing Festival

einzuladen.

wir sind deshalb sehr froh, dass Jean Veloz, eine unserer langjähri-

gen idole, dieses Jahr wieder die Reise zum Rock That Swing Festival

angetreten hat. Sie hat Tausende von Tänzern mit ihrem anmutigen

Stil begeistert und beeinflusst. wir möchten euch alle ermutigen,

euch bei Jean vorzustellen und ihr eure Fragen zu stellen.

unser anderer ehrengast ist noch kein altmeister, doch er ist bereits

eine Legende. Ryan Francois spielte eine große Rolle für das Lindy

hop Revival in den 1980er-Jahren. er beeinflusste unzählige Leute

mit seiner arbeit als choreograph, Darsteller und Trainer. kein ande-

rer kann ein so erstaunliches Resümee aufweisen. wir erinnern uns

noch deutlich an unsere erste Privatstunde mit Ryan in den frühen

1990er-Jahren. er war der erste, der uns sagen konnte, was wir

machen mussten, damit es nach Lindy aussah und sich so anfühlte.

nutzt also die gelegenheiten und besucht die klassen und Talks

unserer ehrengäste. wir können es euch wirklich sehr empfehlen.

Meeting and experiencing these legends in person is very different

from just hearing stories from other people. Therefore, it has always

been very important to us to invite dancers from the golden era of

Swing and Rock’n’Roll as guests of honor to the Rock That Swing

Festival.

we are therefore very happy that our long-time idol and friend Jean

Veloz is returning to Rock That Swing. She has influenced more

dancers with her graceful style and humble personality then she

ever could imagine. So we want to encourage everyone to take the

opportunity to introduce yourself to Jean and have a talk with her.

our other guest of honor is not yet one of the old-time masters, but he

is already a legend. Ryan Francois was one of the original revivalists of

the Lindy hop in the 1980s. he influenced countless numbers of people

through his work as a choreographer, performer and teacher. no one

else can provide such an astonishing resume. we still remember the

private lesson we had with Ryan in the early 1990s. he was the first

person who could tell us how to make the dance feel and look like Lindy.

Take their classes. Join the history Talks. we cannot recommend

it highly enough.

T his year also marks the 25th anniversary of our dance

partnership. wow, twenty-five years! it sounds surreal

since the time has flown by so fast. of course, when

you dance and work together for so long you often get

asked for the secret for such a long lasting partnership. we don’t

know for sure, but we think perhaps it is because we are both easy

going and young at heart. we still jump around like twenty-five year

olds, ignoring that our muscles might ache tomorrow. Further down

in the playbill you can read more about what 25 years of dancing

can mean.

VinTage cLuB

T he family of Swing dance styles is special. The dances

are vigorous and aerobic—great for the body. They

are also accompanied with a wide range of infec-

tious and thrilling music. Finally, they allow for that

inexpressible feeling of flow when you have a great dance with a

partner. That feeling that lets you experience a new layer of what it

means to be alive.

our studio in the city-center of Munich has been spreading the pas-

sion and joy of Swing Dance for more than five years, and continues

to develop and grow. it has already been responsible for thousands

of happy faces. if you become infected by the dance virus as well,

you can improve your skills at the Vintage club or learn Swing and

Fifties dances for the very first time. we have an incredible line-up of

teachers, which includes top RTSF instructors Lana (ukR), Domen

(SLo), Felipe (BRa), and Laura (uSa).

D ieses Jahr ist auch das 25. Jubiläum unserer Tanz-

partnerschaft. wow, 25 Jahre! es klingt surreal und

die Zeit scheint während eines augenaufschlags

vorbeigeflogen zu sein. Freilich, wenn man so lange

zusammen tanzt und arbeitet, wird man oft gefragt, was denn das

geheimnis für eine so lang andauernde Partnerschaft ist. wir sind

uns nicht sicher, aber wir denken, dass es zum Teil daran liegt, dass

wir unbeschwert und immer noch jung in unserem gemüt sind. wir

fühlen uns immer noch wie 25, springen dann genauso herum und

ignorieren einfach, dass unsere Muskeln am nächsten Tag schmer-

zen werden. weiter hinten im heft könnt ihr noch mehr darüber

erfahren, wie alles für uns begann.

VinTage cLuB

D ie Familie der Swingtänze scheint etwas Besonderes

zu sein. Die Tänze sind nicht nur gesund, sondern

sind auch begleitet von einem breiten Spektrum an

ansteckender und mitreißender Musik. Dazu kommt

das unbeschreibliche gefühl von Flow, wenn du einen großartigen

Tanz mit deinem Partner hast. Das ist ein gefühl, dass du nicht mehr

missen möchtest. ein gefühl, das dich erfahren lässt, was es bedeu-

tet am Leben zu sein.

unser Tanzstudio in der innenstadt von München verbreitet bereits

seit mehr als fünf Jahren die Leidenschaft und die Freude am Swing-

tanzen. es wächst und entwickelt sich konstant weiter. es ist bereits

verantwortlich für viele Tausende lachender gesichter. wenn du

also vom Tanzvirus angesteckt bist, kannst du im Vintage club die

Tänze der Swing- und Rock’n’Roll-ära lernen oder deine Tanzfähig-

keiten verbessern. wir haben ein tolles Team von einigen der besten

Trainer, u.a. Top RTSF-Lehrer, wie Lana (ukR), Domen (SLo), Felipe

(BRa) und Laura (uSa).

Du kannst auch nur zu den Partys kommen, um zu tanzen oder ein-

fach um abzuhängen und mit Freunden in angenehmer atmosphäre

einen Drink an der Bar zu genießen. im Vintage club kannst du auch

mit argentinischem Tango engumschlungen über die Fläche schwe-

ben, immer sonntags beim Tango café oder freitags bei der Milonga

von Tango Maldito.

at Vintage club we also have parties for you to just hang out, dance

a bit, and have a drink with your friends in a cozy atmosphere. in

addition to indulging your passion for the various Swing styles you

can also float over the dance floor with argentine Tango at Tango

café on Sundays or at the Milonga by Tango Maldito on Fridays.

The FuTuRe oF The Rock ThaT Swing FeSTiVaL

W e are delighted that The Rock That Swing

Festival continues to bring together various

dance styles and people from different cities

around the world. it creates a place to make

new friends and meet up with old friends. when we look at the joy

and energy filled moments that our superb photographers cap-

tured at Rock That Swing, we forget about the hard work that is

necessary to make it happen. we also feel very touched that so

many people keep coming back.

we would like to continue with Rock That Swing for many more

years. Still, every year is a balancing act between the love for what

we create and the stress that comes with 16 hour working days.

Due to rising costs in all areas (transportation, energy, fees, the

weakening euro, etc.) and a lack of government aid or sponsors, it

is increasingly difficult to keep the festival prices affordable and to

maintain the high quality of artists and events that make Rock That

Swing so special. in last year’s survey we asked for your preference

between keeping the high quality with an increase in cost, or cut-

backs in quality with no cost increase. The answers were 50/50.

This discrepancy is no doubt a reflection of our current society and it

doesn’t make our decision easier.

W ir sind überglücklich, dass das Rock That

Swing Festival in den letzten Jahren ver-

schiedene Tanzstile und Leute aus der ganzen

welt zusammengebracht und damit einen ort

geschaffen hat, an dem man neue Freunde kennenlernt und alte

wiedersieht. Jedes Jahr, wenn wir die außergewöhnlichen Bilder

unserer erstklassigen Fotografen sehen, die die unbändige Freude

und energie beim Rock That Swing eingefangen haben, vergessen

wir die harte arbeit, die notwendig ist, um es möglich zu machen. es

berührt uns auch sehr, dass so viele Leute jedes Jahr wiederkehren.

gerne möchten wir mit dem Rock That Swing Festival für weitere

Jahre diese Plattform bieten. Doch jedes Jahr ist es ein Balanceakt

zwischen der Liebe für das was wir erschaffen und dem Stress und

den gesundheitlichen Problemen, die 16 Stunden lange arbeitstage mit

sich bringen. Mit den steigenden kosten in allen Bereichen (Flugkos-

ten, energie, gebühren, honorare, wechselkurse, etc.) und fehlender

staatlicher Förderung wird es immer schwieriger, die Preise für das

Festival auf einem bezahlbaren niveau zu halten und trotzdem die

hohe Qualität der künstler und events zu bieten, die das Rock That

Swing Festival so besonders machen.

in der letztjährigen umfrage haben wir die Teilnehmer nach ihrer Prä-

ferenz gefragt und wollten wissen, ob sie eine hohe Qualität verbunden

mit Preissteigerungen oder gleichbleibende Preise mit abstrichen an

der hohen Qualität bevorzugen würden. Die antworten waren 50/50.

Das ist sicher auch ein Spiegel der Diskrepanz beim Lebensstandard in

unserer gesellschaft und macht es natürlich nicht einfacher.

Deutschland ist leider auch eines der Länder, in denen es besonders

schwierig ist, Tanzveranstaltungen zu organisieren; z B. gibt es in

den uSa keine Mehrwertsteuer auf Dienstleistungen, während wir

hier 19 % Steuer auf alle einnahmen bezahlen müssen. wenn ihr

nur sitzen würdet, dann wären es nur 7 %, aber da ihr Spaß habt,

kostet das 19 %. Die gebühren, die wir für das abspielen von Musik

zahlen sind über 20 mal höher als in den uSa. und nur in Deutsch-

land müssen Veranstalter für ausländische künstler Sozialabgaben

bezahlen, obwohl diese künstler diese Leistungen überhaupt nicht

in anspruch nehmen können.

Da wir nicht auf ein besseres Steuersystem hoffen können, bleiben

nur noch die optionen, viele Teilnehmer zu haben, Sponsoring oder

Zuschüsse zu erhalten oder das Rock That Swing auf die kaimanin-

seln zu verlegen. Vielleicht sollten wir wirklich die letzte option etwas

näher ins auge fassen.

wir tun unser Bestes, um die Preise auf einem bezahlbaren niveau zu

halten und euch trotzdem eine Veranstaltung bieten zu können, auf die

ihr euch freuen könnt. im Moment funktioniert es nur ohne größere

Preissteigerungen, weil die Teilnehmerzahlen gestiegen sind. Deshalb

möchten wir uns ganz besonders bei allen gästen, künstlern und Fir-

men für die unterstützung des Festivals bedanken. Die Zukunft des

Festivals ist noch ungeschrieben, aber sie liegt in euren händen. Lasst

uns bitte wissen, welche erwartungen ihr an zukünftige Festivals habt

und füllt deshalb bitte die onlineumfrage aus, die ihr auf der website

findet. Lasst uns wissen, was euch gefallen hat und was wir verbes-

sern können.

germany is among the hardest places in the world to run a dance

event. if, at an event, you were to sit and listen to the bands the tax

would only be 7%, but because the participants are having fun the

government no longer considers it ‘culture’, so the tax increases

to 19%. The fees for playing music for an event like The Rock That

Swing Festival are more than 20 times higher than in the uSa. and

only in germany you have to pay social security for foreign artists

despite the fact that they can't benefit from it.

Since we can’t hope for changes of the taxation system in germany

the only solutions is to have a lot of people, to get sponsorship or

subsidies, or move Rock That Swing to the cayman islands. Maybe

we really should look more into the latter.

we are doing our best to keep the prices at an affordable level and

still provide you with an event that you can look forward to attending.

Right now we are able to cover the higher cost without significant

price increases due to the higher number of attendees. Therefore,

we want to thank all guests, artists and contractors very much for

your support of the Rock That Swing Festival. The future of the Rock

That Swing Festival is still unwritten, but it lies in your hands. So

please, tell us how we can keep the event up to your expectations.

J ean Phelps Veloz ist ein lebendes Bindeglied von der Los

1940 kostete eine Tageszeitung drei cents, ein Paar herrenschuhe

Swing-Musik und die Tänze Jitterbug und Lindy hop zur treibenden

Leidenschaft aller Teenager im ganzen Land. Jean Phelps und ihre

Brüder Bob und Ray bildeten keine ausnahme. Jeden Tag, nachdem

sie von der Schule nach hause gekommen waren, luden sie Freun-

de ein und tanzten im wohnzimmer. Jean und Ray tanzten so gut

in 1940, a daily newspaper cost three cents, a pair of men’s shoes

cost between $8 and $10, Jack Benny had the #1 radio show, and

the uS was gearing up for participation in world war ii. it was in this

environment that big band swing music and the dances that went

along with it (Jitterbug and Lindy hop) became the driving passion

of teenagers all over the country. Jean Phelps and her brothers, Bob

and Ray, were no different. every day they came home from school,

invited friends over, and danced in the living room. Jean and Ray got

so good together that they decided to enter an area-wide Jitterbug

contest in Santa Maria, winning out over a total of 500 dancers.

hollywood, where the prize was a Screen actor’s guild membership

This opened the door to many other opportunities. in 1944 Jean

made the well-known MgM short film “groovie Movie” with arthur

walsh. also in this film were Lenny Smith, kay Vaughn, irene Thomas

and chuck Saggau. “groovie Movie” has become a favorite of swing

dancers all over the world as they study this piece of history for the

astonishing look of this style of Lindy hop.

I n den darauffolgenden Jahren war Jean sehr gefragt. Sie

tanzte mit chuck Saggau im 20th-century-Fox-Film „Swingin’

on a Tea garden gate“ (mit Peter Lawford), mit Dean collins

in dem MgM-kinofilm „The horn Blows at Midnight“ (mit Jack

Benny als engel gabriel) und mit Bob ashley im MgM-Film „Jive

Junction“. Jean und ihr Bruder Ray nahmen an vielen Tanzturnieren

und banden diese auftritte in ihre Show ein. im Veloz-Studio arbeite-

of the most famous couples around. They appeared in many movies

porating these appearances into the show. in the Veloz studio, they

Jean und Frank heirateten 1963. als Frank 1981 an krebs starb,

war Jean verblüfft über die große anteilnahme und unterstützung

von Seiten der welttanzgemeinschaft. Sie gab das Tanzen auf, bis

sie 1992 Rudy Linan (ein Swingtänzer aus Las Vegas, der an einer

Dokumentation über Swing arbeitete) ermutigte, wieder mit dem

Tanzen anzufangen.

A ls Jean wieder ins Tanzleben zurückkehrte, wurde

die welt auf sie aufmerksam. Swingtänzer Rob van

haaren, ein guter Freund von Marcus und Bärbl, der

zu dieser Zeit intensive Recherchen über alte Swing-

tänzer betrieb, machte Jean 1996 mit Marcus und Bärbl bekannt.

Sie wurde daraufhin nach München eingeladen, um zu unterrichten

und aufzutreten. Sie traf auf eine vollkommen neue generation von

Swingtänzern, die sich sofort in Jean verliebte.

Jean wurde wieder in die Lindywelt hineingezogen: Sie wurde 1996

in die california Swing Dance hall of Fame eingeführt, trat in ver-

schiedenen TV-Shows auf, wurde im PBS Special „Swing“ hervor-

gehoben und war ehrengast bei vielen Swingveranstaltungen in den

uSa und Deutschland.

erstmals seit den 1940er-Jahren alle noch lebenden Mitglieder der

Tanztruppe aus groovie Movie zusammen: Jean Veloz, ihren Bruder

Ray Phelps, irene Thomas und chuck Saggau.

2012 wurde Jean das erste Mal nach herräng eingeladen und tanzte

dort mit Marcus koch auf der Bühne. Sie erhielt tosenden applaus

und Standing ovations. Das Video verbreitete sich viral in der Swing-

gemeinde. Jean zeigt keine anzeichen, kürzer treten zu wollen. ihr

geburtstagstanz zu ihrem 90. geburtstag wurde bereits über 2,5

Jean and Frank eventually married in 1963. when Frank died in 1981

from cancer, Jean was stunned by the outpouring of support and

sympathy from the world dance community. She stopped dancing

until 1992, when she was approached by Rudy Linan to come out

of retirement. Rudy was a swing dancer from Las Vegas who was

working on a swing documentary and encouraged Jean to start

dancing again.

W hen Jean came out of retirement and started

dancing again, the world took notice. Swing

dancer Rob van haaren (a very good friend

of Marcus and Bärbl who did research on old

swing dancers), introduced Jean to them in 1996 and they invited

Jean to perform and teach in Munich, germany, exposing her to a

whole new generation of swing dancers who quickly fell in love with

her.

Jean became involved in the world of Lindy again: she was inducted

into the california Swing Dance hall of Fame in 1996; appeared and

performed in certain TV shows, was featured in the PBS Special

“Swing”, and was invited as a special guest to many swing events

across the uS and germany (e.g. camp hollywood, Balboa Rendez-

vous, groovie Movie weekend, world Lindy hop championships,

Rock That Swing Festival and the herräng Dance camp).

at the end of the ’90s, Marcus, eric and Silvia recreated the dance

scene from “Swing Fever,” in honor of Jean Veloz and performed it in

front of an overwhelmed Jean and an enthusiastic audience.

in 2000 Tom koerner and Debra Sternberg brought all surviving

members of groovie Movie together for the first time since the 1940s:

in 2012 Jean was invited to the herräng Dance camp the first time

T hey were pioneers of Swing and Boogie woogie

when the dance styles were hardly known. Much has

changed as various Swing and 50s dance styles are

now popular all over the world. They have worked

relentlessly over the past 25 years to share and pass on their

enthusiasm and knowledge. They have inspired and encouraged

dancers locally and internationally through their global adventures

performing and teaching at prestigious events and through their

world-renowned instructional dance videos.

it all began for Marcus & Bärbl with their discovery that some original

dancers were still alive and well. They were thus able to seek out and

meet Swing legends like Frankie Manning, norma Miller, gil Bradey,

Jean Veloz, and Ray hirsch. Their passion to learn and receive in-

spiration from the original dancers led them on a 4-year adventure

throughout the uSa. it was during that time that Marcus and Bärbl

produced one of the first series of instructional Swing Dance videos,

at a time when videos were bought and sold as cassettes!

Marcus and Bärbl have successfully achieved what many dancing

partners strive for in the swing world. Their passion, hard work

and love for the dance has awarded them a very successful career

in which they have won multiple awards including world, uS, and

national titles over the years. They received the prestigious Feather

award in 1996 and 1997 in the uS, and the 2002 Dance Teachers

award in germany.

They continue to share, inspire and provide first-hand knowledge to

all generations from around the globe and are still highly requested

as international teachers. Meanwhile, they never lose their joy or

passion for dancing and teaching. Their journey began with Boogie

woogie, but nowadays they are one of the few couples to teach and

inspire through all major Swing dances, including hollywood and Sa-

voy Style Lindy hop, collegiate Shag, Balboa, charleston, Vernacular

Jazz, and the Big apple.

youR FIRST daNce STepS?

i always loved oldies and especially music

from the 50s. when i was 17 my sister

showed me the basic step of the disco

fox which was the only dance i could do

more or less when i went out dancing. in

1982 i moved to Munich. Two years later i

went together with eleven guys to a dance

school to learn some basic Ballroom Danc-

ing. i loved the Jive because it was danced

to my favorite music. after the silver

course i stopped when a work associate of

mine offered a Rock’n’Roll beginners class

which was actually Boogie woogie. That

was my dance! Jive became boring and

Boogie woogie became my big love. at this

time no guy really wanted to dance with me

(i wasn’t probably good enough for them),

but i still had fun and wanted to dance, so

i showed my best female friend some basic

steps and we had a blast dancing together.

Marcus, how did you start dancing?

My fate was set on my 18th birthday. as

a well meant present my mother and my

grandma gave me a dance course at a

ballroom dance school. i wasn’t happy,

because i was a shy boy that was too

afraid to go on a dance floor, so of course i

refused, as just an 18-year-old could refuse

(maybe at 15 it would have been worse).

Luckily my mother didn’t give up and pulled

out a nasty trick. She asked my best friend,

if he would go with me. The trick worked,

because surprisingly he said: “i did a dance

course when i was 14 and it would be fun to

do it again.” i replied: “what? You danced

and you liked it?” i collected many counter

arguments but this took the wind out of my

sails. Deep inside, my subconscious knew

that i would like to try it, but the conscious

of an 18-year-old that should change his

mind is more difficult. contorting myself, i

finally said: “ok, if you go, i will go, too”.

I guess you were both

very talented.

B i don’t think that i was really

talented. i just loved the music and

to move to it. i always liked to be crazy,

crawling on the floor, trying out new crazy

things, danced till i dropped and couldn’t

move anymore, never paid really attention

of looking elegant in dancing. i was more

on the wild side even though i was always

pretty quiet and shy, however once i

started dancing that changed.

m i might have had some talent. The

steps didn’t feel difficult to me

(this was before the kick-Ball-change)

and i was profoundly convinced that i’m

pretty good. i’m lucky that i didn’t know at

that time how bad i was, because i would

have stopped immediately. and then this

Seeing me on video the first time was a

big shock. in general, it teaches you a

lot about self-awareness. So it is true,

success is 1% talent and 99% sweat.

FaMIly. hoW dId you dIScoveR IT?

B i always loved oldies and especially

50s music. i listened a lot to the

50s radio program “aus meiner Rock-

tasche” with georg kostya and recorded

those songs on cassette. after i took the

Rock’n’Roll beginners class of my work

colleague (which was actually Boogie

woogie) we went out dancing to live

music in a club called crazy alm where

Paul würges played a lot. i still made

the last night of 50s Record hop at the

famous Pop club that was just around the

corner of the crazy alm before it moved

to the Max-emanuel-Brauerei which

became my favorite dance place. i went

there for more than 20 years – almost

every Sunday during the first 14 years.

after a while i also discovered more clubs

with live music like the allotria. The cagey

Strings played there almost every Sunday

morning and i followed them around. i

loved their music and entertainment. i

tried to go everywhere where i could hear

that music and dance to it. it was like a

drug – but a very healthy drug.

m i started to collect 50s records,

because i liked the music. You

need to understand that at this time there

were no cDs (which of course were evil

when they came out), and no internet

downloads, and the radio played disco and

pop music. You did not hear that type of

music in general, you had to buy records

or go to places where record collectors

handled the turn tables to be able to listen

to this music. while searching through

some records at a store i found between

the records leaflets that advertised the

50s Record hop at the Max-emanu-

el-Brauerei in Schwabing. So the first night

i went there i was completely mesmerized.

i could not understand why i had never

heard about the Rock’n’Roll and Boogie

woogie scene before. More than two

hundred people of every age and different

styles were jumping to the greatest music.

at that time i was already a dance

champion of the wolfgang Steuer

ballroom school, so i didn’t try to hide in

the corner anymore. i didn’t try to show

off, but of course i thought i was good (i

still didn’t know that i wasn’t). That night

i saw my first jam circle. The music got

really fast, more than 240 beats a minute

and dancers tried to out-dance each

other. My eyes weren’t able to follow their

feet. it was just out of this world. That

night i decided that this is what i wanted

to learn. and after that night, i went every

Sunday i could to that place for more

than 20 years.

dId you MeeT oN The daNce FlooR?

m Yes, we met at the allotria, a Jazz

club in Munich that doesn’t exist

anymore, like most of the other clubs.

Bärbl joined our dance club “Boogie

Bären” and the dance team that i trained.

watching the old clips, we tried to

duplicate the upside down move from al

Minns in the movie “hellzapoppin”.

B i’m known to be strong and at that

time i was even stronger. So i said

to Marcus, who did the upside down with

another guy, that i can hold him—and i

did. So we always did this move together

when we did a performance. But our

dance partnership didn’t really start until

we went to our first herräng.

So how did you discover

Swing and lindy hop?

B Trying to learn more, we studied

the old movie clips (especially

hellzapoppin’ and the Bill haley movies).

we called all of that “Boogie woogie”. we

didn’t know anything about Jitterbug or

Lindy hop. at that time, Boogie woogie

was just a name for the old style of danc-

ing compared to the modern Rock’n’Roll

acrobatics. There were no fixed styles or

certain ways that were right or wrong.

People just danced and each person had

an individual style. This was the time

before home video cameras and of course

before internet video.

m in 1989, there was a european

Boogie woogie championship in

Freising near Munich. i still danced with

a former dance partner. a bus of Swedes

came for this championship. They danced

completely different than anybody else,

and it reminded us of “hellzappoppin’”.

They were doing the Lindy hop, but we

didn’t know that, yet. Since all Boogie

woogie basics are based on 6-counts we

didn’t know anything about 8-counts,

either. Later we understood why it was so

hard for us to learn from the old movies.

we always only counted to six and there-

fore the steps never made sense to us.

The Swedes Michael, Maria, eva and

håkan, asked us, if we knew the movie

hellzappopin’. we said: "Yes, of course".

where that guy pulls his lady and snatches

her behind his back. we said: “Yes!!" Then

they said the magic words: “This guy is

teaching in Sweden!” Black- out! Silence!!

wham!!!

we couldn’t believe this! when we

watched those old clips we always

dreamed to meet one of those dancers

and what it would be like to learn from

them. Maria sent us a program of the

herräng Dance camp, which was a small

camp in the woods, 100 kilometers away

from Stockholm. it didn’t work out in 1990,

but we went in 1991. i just split up with my

former dance partner and Bärbl said she

had time and would like to go. all together

we had 8 people in two cars, packed to

the ceiling. off we went into a new life.

B in herräng, we met Frankie

Manning, our idol, and it was like

heaven on earth. of course it wasn’t all

that easy; especially speaking english.

originally most classes in herräng were

about routines. There were three class

types: Lindy routine, Jazz routine and

social dancing. in social dancing you

learned swing out styling variations,

but most was not led. eddie, one of the

teachers and member of the Rhythm

hot Shots, told us later that it was like

a revelation for them to see us dancing.

They never thought that you could just

improvise. For us it was strange that you

would only ever dance a routine. Times

change and if we are willing to learn, we

are all getting wiser.

WhaT WaS The ReacTIoN WheN

you caMe BacK aNd ShoWed

The NeW STyleS you leaRNed?

m after returning to Munich,

we tried to pass on our new

knowledge and incorporated many of the

new moves into our competition dancing.

we split the Boogie world. The one who

were open loved it. we got a standing

ovation at our first contest. others, who

were afraid that they might be left behind,

had to make themselves feel better by

making us smaller: “This is not Boogie

woogie”. at that contest we got the first

and the last place from the judges which

were fighting behind the scenes. we just

thought it was funny, because we just

danced what was done in the old movies,

which was what everyone called Boogie

woogie at that time.

B Later we saw an interview of Dean

collins, a dancer who changed

the swing dance style on the west coast

forever. he reported the same thing when

he danced his first contest in La and

people saw the Lindy hop. Some thought

it was absolutely great. others said that

this it not how we dance here.

how did the lindy

start in germany?

m Some dancers of the Boogie

Bären, which was a section of a

bigger dance society at that time, started

to organize the first Boogie woogie

workshop (something completely unseen

before). i was part of that group. it was

a big success and it turned into a yearly

event called the “Pfingstseminar” (transl.

whitsun camp). Bärbl and i were the

driving force of this event for 13 years,

until we got treated very badly and left.

it started as a Boogie woogie camp, and

then in 1992—against some resistance

—Lindy hop was added. For that time

this event had a great line-up: Frankie

Manning, Steven Mitchell, erin Stevens,

Rob van haaren, Jann olsen, eddie and

eva Jansson. This was the start of Lindy

hop in germany. From there it started to

spread over germany and to Switzerland.

What fascinates you

the most about the music?

B we first were exposed to the Big

Beat, the high energetic Rock’n’Roll

and Rhythm’n’Blues. Later we discovered

Swing and Jazz. we always loved both,

each one for what makes it special. it

didn’t matter how tired we have been we

had to dance.

m even there are many great dances

it has always been the dances

and music of the Rock’n’Roll and Swing

family that infected us the most. it is hard

to resist the rhythm and the beat of this

great music. it makes your fingers snip,

your foot tap and your body move. when

we hear that music we have to dance—

even when it was in a department store

trying on pajamas.

Dancing makes people happy and

self-confident. we have seen many people

flourish after they have started dancing.

we both are good examples, where

dancing transformed us to be better and

made us more self-confident.

B Marcus was known to dance like a

maniac. Then you found him sleep-

ing with his head on the table for 10 to 15

minutes, before he went dancing again

until his next nap. we were often jumping

up and down and rolling in ecstasies on

the floor, coming up with a big smile and

dirty shirts or pants.

B Maybe that’s another factor for

the secret. we don’t give up easily.

when you look back on 25 years, there

have been many great amazing moments

and of course also terrible ones where you

realize that they harden you more than

you want, but we always fought to stay on

the bright side.

What did competitions

mean to you?

B we enjoyed competing, mostly

because we wanted to challenge

ourselves. The competitions pushed us

to come up with something new. Frankie

Manning also said that the competitions

were the driving force to develop the

Lindy. we won many contests and

received many awards (we still have 8

boxes full of trophies), but for us it was

very important to share and spread the joy

of Swing dancing. This is what continues

to drive us year after year. if people have a

great time at our event or during classes,

we are happy.

What did you think about

the Killer Boogie recreation?

m we absolutely loved it. when

Thorbjorn, Pontus, and nicolas

recreated the killer Boogie dance from

our “Footwork Fast & Fancy” VhS video

and performed it at Rock That Swing

we were thrilled. The original piece

was on YouTube for many years and we

knew that many people have seen it.

The following killer Boogie challenge by

Pontus and Florian were responsible to

make it an unexpected hit around the

world. it was amazing to see all those

enormously creative versions that all

the dancers came up with. we want to

express our compliments and thanks to

all those dancers. Thank you for your

inspiration.

Is there anything special that you

remember meeting and working

with the old dance masters?

B Many of the old masters wanted to

be different and to have their own

personal style. They all felt so young in

their mind and heart. The great Frankie

Manning said a few great answers to

questions that people asked. here are

three we always remember:

“if you put on a Swing tune and move to it,

you do Swing dancing.”

“Frankie, can you explain to me what

Savoy Style Lindy hop is?”

“of course, but from what Saturday night?

we’ve changed it every week.”

QueSTion To FRankie:

“Frankie, charleston is eight-count and

Lindy developed out of the charleston,

so the Swing out is eight-count, but

why is then changing places (resp. pass

through) only six-count?”

FRankie’S anSweR:

“i don’t know. we probably tried it and

figured out it is two steps too much.”

So what do you want to say

at the end?

marcus & Bärbl: keep dancing,

keep enjoying yourself, keep being nice to

others, keep encouraging others and keep

spreading the dance. There are still too

many people who can’t swing dance.

m Yes a few times the pants tore

jumping into a split. at least for

me—Bärbl never liked to stretch.

What is the secret

to your success?

m we were driven by our passion,

determination, and stubbornness.

it might have been destiny or the result of

our determination, but we think we have

been lucky to be at the right places at

the right time. we also did a lot of crazy

things, like moving to america, just to

be able to meet and work with the old

masters. Maybe the most important part

of the secret is: never stop learning. we

both like to learn and we are constantly

trying to improve, even questioning what

we did for many years. we look at all

those amazing young and new dancers

and how they developed the dance and

brought it to new levels. we are inspired

and motivated to go to the next step.

There were countless times we hated our

dancing and we wanted to stop. now after

25 years we still want to improve and are

looking forward to what we will learn. we

remember when we met willie Desatoff,

one of the most amazing Balboa dancers,

at his house. willie was in his 80s, and

told us what he discovered yesterday

while practicing, how he changed the pull

back of his foot to make it more dynamic.

What are the obstacles

making a living from dancing?

m Dancing keeps us young. The

dark side is the administrative

work, the tax work, people who envy

success, and the endless hours on the

computer. it leaves too little time for the

dance floor and life in general. Dancing

is pure joy, but to make a living from it is

very hard. it sometimes feels like fighting

a bunch of Sith Lords with a laser pen.

es gibt verschiedene arten und Stile von Swingtänzen, wie Lindy

hop, Shag, west coast Swing, Balboa usw. Diese verschiedenen ar-

ten wurden regional und von den vorhergehenden generationen der

Tänzer beeinflusst. So wurden elemente des charleston, aber auch

der vormaligen Tiertänze der 1910er-Jahre in den Swing eingebaut.

aber wie sieht es eigentlich mit anderen Rhythmen, wie die Rhythmen

der Standard- und Lateinamerikanischen Tänze aus?

es kann jedem Tänzer helfen, sich anderer Tanzschritte und Rhyth-

men bewusst zu sein, um bei einem musikalischen Rhythmuswechsel

auch die entsprechenden Bewegungen im Tanz umsetzen zu können.

Swing-walzer, Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba – all diese Rhythmen tauchen

auch in Verbindung mit Jazznamen auf: Louis armstrong, Benny car-

ter, artie Shaw, Mildred Bailey gehören dazu wie die Tänzer eleanor

Powell, Fred astaire und auch Jean Veloz.

room- und Tango-Showpaar, das auch im hollywoodfilmen

Jean Veloz zur neuen Tanzpartnerin von Frank Veloz:

Veloz ihre wurzeln im Swingtanzen.

in diesem grammophon-gespräch betrachten wir

gemeinsam mit der wunderbaren Zeitzeugin und

verschiedenen Musikstilen und den entsprechen-

There are different types and styles of Swing dancing that

are called Lindy hop, Shag, west coast Swing, Balboa and

so on. These different types of Swing dancing were influenced

locally and by the evolving generations of dancers (some exam-

ples: charleston elements can be adapted to Swing dancing, some

animal dance steps from the 1910s re-appear in Swing).

But how is it with other rhythms, like the rhythms of ballroom dances

or dances with Latin roots? it can help on dancers a lot to be aware

of other styles and rhythms and how to move to those rhythms.

Swing-waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba – all these rhythms have been

played by Jazz names like Louis armstrong, Benny carter, artie

Shaw, Mildred Bailey and performed by dancers like eleanor Powell,

Fred astaire and also Jean Veloz.

vorite teachers. with 55 of the world’s best

international teachers and more than 200

workshops the Dance camp offers a huge

variety of excellent classes. Dancers at

any level, from beginner to advanced and

all the way up to teacher, can create their

own individual schedule. You can find the

if this is your first dance camp, you can be

sure to get the best tips and tricks to get

started on the dance floor. You can book

the Dance camp on a daily basis. There

are special beginners tracks on Friday and
