Application

With the Electronic-Key System (EKS), it does not matterif apassword is forgotten.EKS is used forelectronicaccessmanagementonPCsandcontrolsystems.

Nowadaysaccessrightsareusuallycontrolledby the issueofpasswords.Inpractice,however,thisoftenleadstounauthorizedchangestosystems.

ThisiswheretheElectronic-Key Systemcanbeputtooptimaluse: in comparison to the issue of a password, considerablymoreresponsibilityisassignedtotheownerofanElectronic-Key.

TheElectronic-Keyprovidesprotection against unauthorized accesstooperationandvisualizationsystems.Oftenonlyspecificpeople havepermission to change the systemparametersoncriticalsystems.ThisistheidealapplicationforEKS.

Inatypicalapplication,theuserhasanaccess right at a specific levelviatheElectronic-Key.

Key management using the Electronic-Key-Manager

TheElectronic-Keyscanalsobemanagedonseparateworksta-tionsusingtheElectronic-Key-Manager (EKM)software.

Alongwithaccessrightsorpersonaldata,itisalsopossibletosave process-related information, e.g. recipes or parametersforthemachinecontrolsystem,ontheElectronic-Keyandinthedatabaseandretrievethedatainproduction.

InprincipleEKScomprisestwocomponents:anElectronic-KeyandthematchingElectronic-Keyadapter.

IntegratedintotheElectronic-Keyintheformofarobusttagareamemorychipandanantenna(transponder).Thisisinfactaninductive identification systemwith:

f Transponderwithout battery

InoperationtheElectronic-KeyisinsertedintotheElectronic-Keyadapterandisheldinplacebyaspringclip.Thepowersupplyfor the transponder and thedata are transferredbetween theElectronic-Key adapter and the Electronic-Key without using any contacts.

ThedatacarrierintheElectronic-Keyisequippedwithacombinedread/writeandfixed-codememory:

TheEKS system also makes it possible, for example, to logproductparametersandoperatorentriesinaccordancewithFDAstandard21CFRpart11.EKS canbeusedinthiscontextasanelectronic signature forpersonalconfirmationofworksteps.

Duetothetransferofdatawithoutusinganycontacts,itwaspos-sibletodesigntheElectronic-Keyadapterwiththehighdegree of protection IP 67 fromtheaccessside,i.e.itissuitable for industrial use.TheElectronic-Keyadaptercanbe installed inaccordancewithDIN43700inanycontrolpanelwithastandardcut-outof33mmx68mm. It is fastenedbymeansofscrewclampelementsfromtherearsideofthepanelinordertopreventunauthorizedtamperingfromtheoperatorside.

OnElectronic-Keyadaptersthatareusedaspurereadstationsontheproductionline,write protection can be enabled using a DIP switchtofurtherincreaseprotectionagainsttampering.

Integration

Theuser isresponsiblefororganizingtheprogrammingoftheapplication,integrationinanoverallsystemandassignmentanduseofthefreelyprogrammablememoryintheElectronic-Key.

InterfacingoftheEKS Electronic-Keyadapterswithserial,USBorEthernetTCP/IPinterfacetotheuser’sPCapplicationissup-portedbyoptionallyavailableActiveX® modules1)(canbeusedifMicrosoftWindows®1)baseduserprogramssupportActiveX®).EKScanthusbeused,e.g.,inconjunctionwithprocessvisualiza-tionsoftware.Datacommunicationisinaccordancewithtransferprotocol3964RrespectivelyTCP/IP.TheActiveX® module isusedhereasaprotocoldriver.

TooperatetheEKSElectronic-KeyadapterwithUSBinterfaceonthePC,USBdriversoftwaremustbeinstalled.TheUSBinterfaceisdesignedasavirtualserialCOMport.Thecommunicationovertheinterfaceisexactlythesameasforthedevicewithserialin-terface.ThereforedeviceswithserialinterfaceandUSBinterfaceareinterchangeablewithregardtosoftwareapplications.

IfadatabaseisestablishedtousetheuniqueElectronic-Keyse-rialnumber,itisnotimperativetowritetotheElectronic-Key.Asanoption,theTransponder Coding softwarecanbeusedforstraightforwardlywritingandreadingtheElectronic-KeyonthePC.Furthermore,theElectronic-Key-Manager,aflexiblesoftwarepackage, is available forprogramming and managing the Electronic-KeysonthePCincludingdatabasefortheElectronic-Keys.ThefreelyprogrammablememoryontheElectronic-KeycanbestructuredexactlyasrequiredusingEKM.

Commissioning and system integration is significantly simplerusing the EKS with PROFIBUS and PROFINET interface. TheaddresscanbesetusingDIPswitches.TheEKS is integratedinthesoftwareusingtheGSDfilesandthedataareavailableinthecontrolsystem’sinputareaimmediatelyafterconfiguration.

Version FSA

Asanalternative,theElectronic-KeyadapterswithUSB,EthernetTCP/IP,PROFIBUSandPROFINET interfaceareavailable intheFSA (For Safety Applications)version.Tosolvethewidespreadproblemoftamperingwithsafetyguards,EKShasbeenexpandedfor safety-related applications in conjunction with operating mode selection.Inthiscasetrainedpersonnelarespecificallyauthorizedtoperformcriticalsetupandmaintenanceworkinaspecial,hazardousoperatingmode.

Thisversionhasadditionalswitchedoutputsthatcanbeutilizedtoformasafeshut-downsignal.Inthiscase,asafeevaluationdevicemustbeconnecteddownstream.ThismeansthattheEKS FSAcanbeusedforsafety-relevantapplications.ThemachineisresettoasafeoperatingmodebyremovingtheElectronic-Key.
