REVIEWHausschwamm-Merkblatt. Wasjedermann, ob Hausbesitrer oder Mieter, auch
der Baufachmann vom Hausschwamm und anderen holzserstbrendenPilzen wissen muss. By F. Kallenbach. pp. 23, tt. 8. Darmstadt:Hessische Landestelle fur Pilz- und Hausschwamm-Beratung.1932 • 4 Mk.
The interest in the destruction caused by Merulius lacrymans in buildings has increased greatly in this country since the war. So much so that there is a move toensure that all constructive timber should be treated with some sort of preservative;I am told that no government building subsidy is given in Denmark unless thetimber is treated according to a certain specification.
It is a little surprising to find that in spite of the fact that much of the fundamental work on dry-rot has been done in Germany, a popular campaign appearsto have been necessary to explain the seriousness of the position. F. Kallenbach, well known as an authority on Boletus, has produced an interesting booklet in whichhe is described as "Direktor der Hessischen Landesstelle fur Pilz- und Hausschwamm-Beratung." A coloured poster (six colour, 75 x 60 em.) accompaniesthe pamphlet.
The first twelve pages of the pamphlet give descriptions of the eight excellentplates-one an uncoloured reduction of the poster, the others each containing fourphotographs. The series is excellent, showing the various stages of Merulius and itsdepredations.
The letter press is written in popular style and gives a clear description of theessential points. The remaining pages complete the general account of the fungusand methods of treatment.
The pamphlet gains additional authority by having been read through byProfessor R. Falck: it is well produced and in addition to serving its immediatepurpose should be found useful in other countries.
