Preview of Exhibitions Spring 2019

Here a small appetizer from the numerous interesting exhibi-tions which will be accompanied by our publications.Through January 27, the Albertina is presenting a major retro-spective dedicated to Helen Levitt (see p. 71). Also in Vienna, works by Art Brut women artists will be on view at the Kunst-forum Wien from mid-February: Flying High (see pp. 52–55). A large-scale retrospective of Oskar Kokoschka is shown at the Kunsthaus Zurich until March, and then travels to the Leopold Museum in Vienna in April (see pp. 10–11). Through March, the Museum Goch and Galerie Seippel, Co- logne, are presenting works by the Dutch sculptor Auke de Vries (see pp. 58–59). Otto Mueller and His Network in Wrocław will be on view at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin through mid-March, followed by a second venue at the National Museum in Wrocław (see p. 72). In February, the Kunstfoyer of the Versi-cherungskammer Kulturstiftung in Munich will open an exhibi-tion of Jim Dine’s touching self-portraits (see p. 79), followed in early June by a comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the work of Saul Leiter (see pp. 4–7). The Kunstmuseum Gel-senkirchen and the Flottmann-Hallen in Herne are dedica-ting a joint exhibition to the Spanish sculptor Enrique Asensi which will open in May (see pp. 60–61).

Ausstellungsvorschau Frühjahr 2019

Hier ein kleiner Vorgeschmack auf lohnenswerte Ausstellun-gen, die von unseren Publikationen begleitet werden. Noch bis bis zum 27. Januar zeigt die Albertina die große Retrospektive von Helen Levitt (siehe Seite 71). Im Kunst-forum Wien sind ab Mitte Februar Werke von Künstlerinnen der Art Brut zu sehen: Flying High (siehe Seiten 52–55). Eine große Oskar Kokoschka-Retrospektive zeigt das Kunst-haus Zürich bis März und im Anschluss das Leopold Museum in Wien ab April (siehe Seiten 10–11). Das Museum Goch und die Galerie Seippel, Köln, stellen bis März den niederlän-dischen Bildhauer Auke de Vries vor (siehe Seiten 58–59). Otto Mueller und sein Netzwerk in Breslau ist noch bis Mitte März im Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin und wandert dann weiter ins Nationalmuseum Wrocław (siehe Seite 72). Im Februar eröffnet das Kunstfoyer der Versicherungs- kammer Kulturstiftung in München eine Ausstellung von Jim Dines berührenden Selbstporträts (siehe Seite 79), gefolgt von einer umfassenden Retrospektive Saul Leiters ab Anfang Juni (siehe Seiten 4–7). Dem spanischen Bildhauer Enrique Asensi widmen das Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen und die Flottmann-Hallen in Herne eine gemeinsame Ausstellung ab Mai (siehe Seiten 60–61).

Our Bestsellers in the Press

In 2018, the great sales success of some of our new publi-cations – for example, Helen Levitt and Robert Delaunay and the City of Lights – was also reflected in the impressive media response. One of this year’s bestsellers in particular was downright inspiring for the editorial staff: Frederik Busch’s photo book German Business Plants. »Last plant standing« was the title of the review in the German issue of Cosmopol-itan; »Finally someone cares« was the headline in the mag-azine Barbara; and the FAZ editorial staff was wondering whether their brave ficus tree might not also have earned its own name. The New York Times Lens blog even saw parallels between the portraits of potted plants and August Sander’s photos. Obviously, this book was fun for everyone!

Saul Leiter (1923–2013) erfährt erst seit weni-gen Jahren die verdiente Würdigung als einer der führenden Pioniere der Farbfotografie. Das mag daran liegen, dass Leiter sich selbst lange in erster Linie als Maler verstand. 1946 nach New York gekommen, stellte er gemein-sam mit Abstrakten Expressionisten wie Willem de Kooning aus. In den späten 1940er-Jahren begann er, neben der Malerei schwarz-weiß zu fotografieren. Wie Robert Frank oder Helen Levitt fand er seine Motive auf den Straßen New Yorks, war dabei aber sichtbar auch an Abstraktion interessiert. Die lange erwartetete Neuauflage des reich ausgestatteten Bildbands, der erstmals anläss-lich der weltweit umfassendsten Retrospek-tive 2012 erschien, zeigt neben Leiters frühen Schwarz-Weiß- und Farbaufnahmen auch seine Modefotografie, die übermalten Aktfotos sowie seine Malerei und seine Skizzenbücher.

Saul Leiter (1923–2013) has only in recent years finally received his due as one of the great pioneers of color photography. This can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Leiter saw himself for a long time mainly as a painter. After coming to New York in 1946, he exhib-ited alongside Abstract Expressionists like Willem de Kooning before beginning in the late 1940s to take black and white photo-graphs. Like Robert Frank or Helen Levitt, he found his motifs on the streets of New York, but at the same time was visibly interested in abstraction. This long-awaited new edition of the book first published to mark the major retrospective of Leiter’s work in 2012, features, in addition to his early black and white and color images, his fashion photography, the overpainted nudes, as well as his paintings and sketchbooks.

Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) gehört mit Francis Picabia und Pablo Picasso zu jener Malergeneration, die an der gegenständlichen Malerei festhielt, als die Abstraktion nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ihre Dominanz etablierte. Dass heute die gegenstandslose Malerei und die Figuration ohne ideologische Grabenkämpfe nebeneinander praktiziert werden können, ist auch ihr Verdienst. Künstler der Gegenwart berufen sich insbesondere auf Kokoschka. Die Retrospektive spürt den Motiven und der Motivation des Malers nach, der in nicht weni-ger als fünf Ländern zuhause war. Sie ver-sammelt rund 100 Gemälde und ebenso viele Arbeiten auf Papier, Fotografien und Briefe aus allen Lebensphasen. Als besonderes Highlight sind die monumentalen Triptychen aus dem Spätwerk Die Prometheus Saga (1950, The Courtauld Gallery, London) und Thermopylae (1954, Universität Hamburg) erstmals außer-halb Englands vereint.

Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) is, along with Francis Picabia and Pablo Picasso, one of a gen-eration of artists who retained their allegiance to figurative painting after the Second World War, even as abstract art was consolidating its predominance. It is also thanks to them that non-representational painting and figurative art can now be practiced side by side without parti-san feuding. Artists of the present day acknowl-edge their debt to Kokoschka in particular. The retrospective traces the motifs and motiva-tions of a painter who felt at home in no fewer than five countries. It brings together 100 paintings and an equal number of works on paper, photo-graphs and letters from all phases of his career. Two impressive triptychs – The Prometheus Triptych (1950, Courtauld Gallery, London) and Thermopylae (1954, University of Ham-burg) – are the high point of Kokoschka’s mature œuvre, and of this retrospective.

Wie lebt es sich in den nördlichsten Städten und Siedlungen dieser Welt? Seine dreiteilige Werkserie gibt überraschende Ant-worten darauf. Sie erzählt von extremen Lebens- bedingungen, aber auch von der Schönheit der Normalität und der Sehnsucht nach Freiheit. Norilsk, die Stadt der Superlative: Die Minen-stadt ist nicht nur die nördlichste Großstadt, sondern auch die am meisten verschmutzte. Mit ihren gut bezahlten Arbeitsplätzen bietet sie ihren 175.000 Einwohnern die Aussicht auf Wohlstand. Dagegen finden in Dikson, das an 82 Tagen in der Polarnacht versinkt, nur mehr wenige hundert Menschen ein Auskom-men. Teriberka an der Barentssee ist die dritte Ansiedlung, deren Strukturen und Bewohner Schweizer im Rahmen seines Langzeitprojekts dokumentiert hat.

What is life like in the north-ernmost cities and settlements in the world? Beat Schweizer’s three-part series of works provides surprising answers to these questions. It tells of extreme living conditions, but also of the beauty of normality and the desire for freedom. Norilsk, the city of superlatives: The mining town is not only the world’s most north-ern city, but also the most polluted. With its well-paid jobs, it offers its 175,000 residents the prospect of prosperity. In stark contrast, only a few hundred people find work in Dik-son which for eighty-two days sinks into the polar night. Teriberka at the Barents Sea is the third settlement whose structures and inhab-itants Beat Schweizer documented within the frameworks of his long-term project.

In Brasilien, Kolumbien, auf den karibischen Inseln, in Zentralamerika und im Süden der Ver-einigten Staaten werden bis heute Maskeraden inszeniert, die die Geschichte und das kultu-relle Gedächtnis der afrikanischen Sklaven und ihrer Nachkommen feiern und lebendig halten. All across the Americas, from the 16th cen-tury onwards, enslaved Africans escaped their captors and established their own communi-ties or joined with indigenous peoples to forge new identities. Cimarron, borrowing a Span-ish-American term for these fugitive slaves, is a new series of photographic portraits of their descendants by acclaimed photographer Charles Fréger. From Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean islands, Central America, and as far as the southern United States, elaborate mas-querades are staged that celebrate and keep alive the history and memory of African slaves and their creole or mixed-race descendants. Unique photographs of people in dynamic cos-tumes from remote regions of the world, sup-plemented with texts providing ethnographic and historical context, will enthrall followers of social history, ethnic folklore, and unusual fashion experimentation.

Northern Ireland will have to leave the Euro-pean Union due to UK’s Brexit although a majority of its citizens voted to remain. After more than 30 years of conflict during the so called »Troubles« a fundamental con-dition of the 1998 Peace Agreement was the open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This frontier will become an external border of the European Union after Brexit again. There is a serious concern that such a hard border is very likely to threaten the Peace Process in the country. Toby Binder’s photo series accompanies teen-agers in six different Protestant and Catho-lic neighborhoods, providing an intimate and immediate insight into the daily lives of a whole generation. It depicts the ubiquity of unem-ployment, drug crime, and violence afflicting Belfast’s youth, whether they live on one side of the »Peace Wall« or the other.

In den frühen 1990er-Jahren reiste der nie-derländische Fotograf Ad van Denderen nach Welkom, einer kleinen Bergarbeitersiedlung in Südafrika, um die letzten Tage der Apartheid zu dokumentieren. 25 Jahre später entdeckte Lebohang Tlali, damals ein junger Kunststu-dent in Kapstadt, van Denderens mittlerweile von der Kritik gefeiertes Buch Welkom in Suid-Afrika. Tlali, der in Welkoms benachbartem Township Tahbong aufgewachsen ist, sah zum ersten Mal, wie die weiße Gesellschaft wäh-rend der Apartheid gelebt hatte. Gleichzeitig boten die Fotografien auch einen Wiederer-kennungseffekt. 2016 entschied sich Tlali, van Denderen zu kontaktieren und initiierte so eine großartige Zusammenarbeit.Das Buch Welkom Today kombiniert neue und historische Aufnahmen von van Denderen, Tlali und ihren Studenten mit Fotos aus Familien-alben, Zeitungsarchiven und mit Interviews und Essays.

In the early 1990s Dutch photographer Ad van Denderen travelled to Welkom, a small mining town in South-Africa, to document the last days of apartheid. 25 years later his critically acclaimed photo book Welkom in Suid-Afrika was discovered by Lebohang Tlali (then a young art student in Cape Town), who grew up in Welkom’s neighbouring township Thabong. The book served as an eye opener: for the first time Tlali saw how the white com-munity lived during apartheid. In 2016 Tlali decided to reach out to Van Denderen, mark-ing the start of a great collaboration.Welkom Today combines new and historic photographs by Van Denderen, Tlali, and their stu-dents as well as images from family albums, newspaper archives, interviews by journalist Margalith Kleijwegt, and essays. In a multi- vocal, non-hierarchical way, the project opens up to multiple histories and perspectives, across generations and backgrounds.

Im September 2018 feierte Nordkorea den 70. Jahrestag seiner Staatsgründung. Stolz und überraschend friedlich präsentierte sich ein Land, von dem wir kaum mehr wissen, als uns in der Presse berichtet wird. Denn die Demokratische Volksrepublik Korea gilt als eines der unzugänglichsten Länder der Welt. Man sagt, der Schlüssel zu einem Land seien seine Menschen. Da aber ein direkter unkon- trollierter Austausch mit Einheimischen prak-tisch unmöglich ist, näherte sich die Foto-grafin Ulrike Crespo den Menschen über ihre Kamera und gewährt uns intime und seltene Einblicke in das Alltagsleben der Koreaner. Ihr Fazit: »Augen auf, hinschauen und nicht sofort alles bewerten. Die Realität abzubilden, ist unmöglich«. Nach ihren Erfolgstiteln Iceland (2017) und Danakil (2018) ist Nordkorea ihr siebter Bildband, der im Kehrer Verlag erscheint.

In September 2018, North Korea celebrated the seventieth anniversary of its founding. A country, of which we know little more than what is reported to us in the press, presented itself proudly and surprisingly peacefully. For the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is considered one of the most inaccessible countries in the world. It is said that the key to a country is its people. But since a direct, uncontrolled exchange with locals is prac-tically impossible, the photographer Ulrike Crespo approached the people through her camera, thus providing us with intimate and rare insight into everyday life in North Korea.Her conclusion: »Keep your eyes open, look carefully, and do not immediately judge every-thing. It is impossible to depict reality.« After her successful publications Iceland (2017) and Danakil (2018), North Korea is her seventh photo book with Kehrer Verlag.

Zwischen 2011 und 2017 fuhr Joshua Dudley Greer über 100.000 Meilen kreuz und quer durch die USA und fotografierte das gewal-tige Autobahnnetz, das zum prägenden Merk-mal der amerikanischen Landschaft geworden ist. Ohne Hast ließ er sich durch das Geflecht der Fernstraßen treiben und erlebte die darin entstandenen Räume als Bühne, auf der sich Geschichten entfalten und gegensätzliche Kräfte kreuzen. Analysiert werden die – tat-sächlichen oder fiktiven – Begrenzungen die-ser Straßen anhand der Trennlinien zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Raum, Privileg und Benachteiligung, Individuum und Gemein-schaft und zwischen Heimkehr und Aufbruch. Die resultierenden Fotografien der amerika-nischen Infrastruktur zeigen den Zustand der Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Umwelt des Lan-des in überraschenden Momenten voller Humor, Emotionalität und Menschlichkeit.

From 2011 to 2017 Joshua Dudley Greer traveled over 100,000 miles by car, focus-ing his camera on the massive network of superhighways that has become ubiquitous throughout the United States. Rather than moving quickly through these spaces he made the decision to slowly and deliberately dwell within them, looking at the road as a stage where narratives play out and opposing forces often intersect. The boundaries that line these roadways, whether real or imagined, are exam-ined by looking at the separations between public and private space, privilege and need, the individual and the collective, and the countervailing ideas of home and escape. The resulting compilation of photographs depicts the state of America’s infrastructure as a physical manifestation of its economic, social and environmental circumstances in unforeseen moments of humor, pathos, and humanity.

After eight years and numerous failed attempts to get pregnant, a Swiss couple decide to have their baby born by surrogacy. Although it is banned in Switzerland, they ask a woman in the USA to carry their child in her womb. Photographers Tom Licht and Djamila Gross-man describe the journey of the couple and the reasons behind their decision. They join the parents for the child’s birth in Wiscon-sin, USA, because they are intrigued by the questions their story offers. Surrogacy mir-rors a global reality where lines blur between technology, human biology, ethics, and law. As the granddaughter of a family from Sude-tenland, Yvonne Most pursues her family roots photographically. In doing so, she discovers connections to collective experiences from traces of memory and historical research. Her photo series opens up a new view onto a region, a landscape with deeps scars, which is con-stantly evolving. The photographer is interested in the incom-plete, the imperfections, and what happens or does not happen on the periphery. The Swedish photographer Erik Östensson is known for his surrealistic, deceptively sim-ple, and unique pictorial compositions. His poetically performative images reveal an emotional interplay in the depiction of the interaction between people, objects, and land-scapes. Everything appears to be intercon-nected in harmonious coexistence, whereby new relationships in materials and form develop. Östensson encourages the viewer to discard learned habits of seeing and to look with the eyes of a child, who has only just begun to dis-cover the world. Past notions are superseded, and the meaning of known objects expanded.Erik Östensson studied at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York and the University of Umeå in Sweden. His works are regularly exhibited in galleries, museums, and at festivals in and beyond Scandinavia. He lives and works in Stockholm.

The Eye of the Cyclops stand auf der Shortlist des Istanbul Dummy Award 2017 und des Kassel Dummy Award 2018 und wird aktu-ell auf internationalen Kunstmessen gezeigt. A career started in the beauty industry gave Ann Massal the feeling that Plato's take on beauty as truth was long dead. She subse-quently decided to study photography to try to express her very own view. With similarities to the crazy world of Alice in Wonderland, Mas-sal’s pictures are never expected. Using a vast array of techniques – dripping, bleaching, cut-ting, rotting – she distorts images to offer us her outlook on beauty: ambiguous, sinful, and always colorful.Massal’s work has been exhibited through-out Korea in 2016, nominated in 2017 by JH Engström for Photopaper, and was finalist at Helskinki 2018 Photo Festival. The Eye of the Cyclops was shortlisted for the Istanbul 2017 Dummy Award, the Kassel 2018 Dummy Award and is being showcased at various international fairs. Anna Katharina Zeitler beschäftigt sich in ihrer Arbeit If you can dream it, you can do it mit dem Gefühl, ständig in Bewegung zu sein und dem Wunsch danach, anzukommen. Ihre Bilder zei-gen neue Wirklichkeiten, die entstehen, wenn Traum und Realität verschmelzen. Sie benutzt Bilder als Metaphern, um scheinbare Zwischen-zustände als Konstante zu beschreiben. In kon-zentrierten und geheimnisvollen Einzelbildern führt die Fotografin den Betrachter auf eine Reise ohne konkreten Anfang, Mitte und Ende. Auf dieser poetischen Reise lässt die Künst-lerin Autobiografisches und Fiktionales inei-nanderfließen und gestaltet so den Fluss der Bilder als eine Art Traumwelt. Anna Katharina Zeitler studierte Fotografie an der Staatlichen Fachakademie für Fotodesign in München. Arbeits- und Stipendienaufenthalte in New York, Chile, Spanien und Indien folg-ten. Ihre Fotografien wurden mehrfach interna-tional ausgezeichnet und weltweit ausgestellt.

In her work If you can dream it, you can do it, Anna Katharina Zeitler deals with the feel-ing of being constantly on the move and the desire to arrive. Her images reveal new reali-ties, which are created when the dream world merges with the real world. She uses images as metaphors to describe ostensibly interme-diate states as constants. In concentrated and mysterious individual images, the photographer takes the viewer on a journey with-out a concrete beginning, middle, or end. On this poetic journey, the artist merges the autobiographical and the fictional, thus creat-ing a flow of images as a dream world of sorts.Anna Katharina Zeitler studied Photography at the Academy of Photographic Design in Munich, followed by extended work stays and fellowships in New York, Chile, Spain, and India. Her photographs have won international awards and have been exhibited worldwide in institutions for contemporary photography.

Seit zehn Jahren reist die international aus-gezeichnete Filmregisseurin und Fotokünstlerin Franziska Stünkel durch Asien, Afrika, Europa und Amerika auf der Suche nach natürlichen Reflexionen auf Schaufensterglas, die in ihrer Verdichtung von der Koexistenz menschlichen Lebens erzählen. Zu höchster Komplexität aufgeladen, sind ihre Fotografien die Visu-alisierung der Gemeinsamkeiten und Gegen- sätze, die in unserer vielfältig vernetzten Welt bestehen. Die Künstlerin verzichtet dabei vollständig auf die digitale Nachbearbeitung ihrer Fotografien. Since ten years, the internationally acclaimed film director and photo artist Franziska Stünkel has been travelling through Asia, Africa, Europe, and America in search of natural reflections in shop windows, which, in their concentration, tell of the coexistence of human life. Charged with the utmost complexity, her photographs are the visualization of the similarities and con-trasts that exist in our multifaceted, networked world. The artist completely dispenses with the digital post-processing of her photographs. The present volume provides comprehensive insight into the photographic series, supple-mented by texts by well-known authors from various fields of science on the topic of coexis-tence: futurology, biology, music, religious stud-ies, anxiety research. Für seiner Werkserie The Guardians reiste Vla-dimir Antaki durch Europa, den Mittleren Osten und Amerika, um Ladenbesitzer zu fotografie-ren – »Wächter«, wie er sie nennt. Diese Wächter behüten das, was Antaki als »urban temples«, urbane Tempel, bezeichnet – einzigartige Orte, die sich im Zeitalter der Handelsketten und Standardprodukte auf frühere Zeiten und ein anderes Lebensgefühl beziehen.Antaki schafft eindrucksvolle Porträts die-ser Wächter inmitten ihrer Läden, die den Betrachtenden die Schönheit dieser oftmals vergessenen Orte erneut vor Augen führen. Der Fotograf ist der Überzeugung, dass diese Tempel das Herz und die Seele jeder Großstadt ausmachen und sie dem jeweiligen Stadtzent-rum sein einzigartiges Flair verleihen. Darüber hinaus besteht gewissermaßen eine Verpflich-tung, an diese Läden zu erinnern, da immer mehr ihre Tore schließen müssen.

For his series The Guardians Antaki traveled across Europe, the Middle East and America, photographing shopkeepers or »Guardians«. These Guardians are keepers of what Antaki terms »urban temples«, unique spaces which, in an age of cookie-cutter, corporate shops, hearken back to an earlier time and mode of urban life. Antaki creates visually arresting portraits of the Guardians that make the viewer connect to the beauty of these often forgotten spaces. Antaki believes that these temples are the heart and soul of every city; they are what give the urban center its uniqueness in time and place. There is also a duty of memory associ-ated with these spaces. As so many of them are closing, it falls to artists such as Antaki to preserve their memory and pay them tribute.

Der Foto-graf beobachtet seine Familie in ihrer Rolle als temporäre Hüter des Schlosses, die seine Tra-ditionen zu bewahren und in eine ungewisse Zukunft zu überführen suchen.James Hill fotografiert seit 1995 in erster Linie für die New York Times. For the last 20 years James Hill has been pho-tographing life at his wife’s ancestral home in France, the Château de Maillebois. Sur-rounded by a walled park, the property is an island of the past caught in the present. The images, both tender and whimsical, explore the plethora of emotions that come from living in a house bearing so much history and how the family and the local community interact with it. The photographer watches his family in their role as temporary custodians of the castle, attempting to maintain its traditions and carry them into an uncertain future.James Hill has been a contract photographer for The New York Times since 1995 and his images have won many of photojournalism’s most important prizes including World Press Photo, the Pulitzer Prize and the Visa d’Or. His last book, Somewhere between War and Peace, was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2014.

Seit Monaten beobachten die Hamburger die Veränderungen an dem markanten Hochhaus in der Willy-Brandt-Straße, dem Kallmorgen Tower. Das 17-stöckige Bürogebäude ist durch seine streng symmetrische Architektur und die prominente Lage auf der Spiegel-Insel ein Sym-bol für Vorwärtsgewandheit, Veränderungswil-len und Durchsetzungskraft. Der Hamburger Architekt Werner Kallmorgen war ein Vorden-ker, »1968 wirkte sein Bau geradezu futuris-tisch, heute ist er ein Klassiker« (Theja Geyer). Das für IBM konstruierte und einer Holle-rith-Lochkarte nachempfundene Hochhaus wurde 2016 von Quest Investment Partners erworben, entkernt und nun komplett reno-viert. Ruediger Glatz begleitete das Projekt kontinuierlich mit der Kamera und porträtierte seine Entwicklung. So entstand ein geschicht-liches Dokument eines bisher oft unbeachte-ten Wahrzeichens der Stadt Hamburg.

For months, Hamburg residents have been observing the changes to the striking high-rise on Willy-Brandt-Strasse: the Kallmorgen Tower. With its strictly symmetrical architec-ture and prominent location on the so-called Spiegel Island, the seventeen-story office build-ing is a symbol of forward mobility, the will to change, and assertiveness. The Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen was a mastermind, »in 1968, his building seemed almost futuris-tic; today, it is a classic« (Theja Geyer).The high-rise building, designed for IBM and based on a Hollerith punched card, was acquired by Quest Investment Partners in 2016, gutted, and now completely renovated. Ruediger Glatz accompanied the project continuously with his camera and portrayed its development. The result is a historical document of a previously neglected landmark of the city of Hamburg.

Das Kirchner Museum Davos zeigt erstmals und vollständig unter dem Titel Der Fujiyama von Davos jene auf der »Matographie« beru-henden Bildzyklen von Hans Danuser. Angeregt durch die markanten Lawinenenverbauungen am Schiahorn, entwickelte der Künstler beim Blick aus seinem Arbeitszimmer diese einzig-artige Bildidee. Seine in erodierenden Schiefer-sand geritzten Bildzeichen zeigen die Berg- und Vulkanmotive in immer neuen sensiblen Vari-ationen und Reihungen. Dabei steht stets der Berg im Zentrum der künstlerischen Erkun-dung. Danuser nutzt hierzu nicht nur die Ver-bindung von analoger und digitaler Fotografie, sondern auch eine von ihm eigens entwickelte und patentierte Farbtechnik: die »Matographie«. Beiträge von Philip Ursprung und Gerd Fol-kers begleiten diesen Werkkomplex Danusers und schlagen zugleich einen Bogen um die Welt – vom Fujiyama bis nach Davos.

The Kirchner Museum Davos presents Hans Danuser’s photo series based on the »Matog-raphy« technique – for the first time and in its entirety – in an exhibition titled The Mount Fuji of Davos. Inspired by the striking avalanche barriers on the Schiahorn, the artist developed his unique pictorial form while looking out the window of his studio. His pictograms drawn in eroding shale sand depict mountain and vol-cano imagery in ever new, subtle variations and sequences. Invariably, the mountain is the focus of artistic exploration. To this end, Danuser uses not only a combination of both analogue and digital photography, but also a coloring technique known as »Matography«, which he himself developed and patented. Essays by Philip Ursprung and Gerd Folkers accompany this body of work by Hans Danuser, drawing a line from one end of the world to the other – from Mount Fuji to Davos.

Der Art-Brut-Begriff geht heute über den aus-schließlichen Fokus von Arbeiten aus Psychiat-rien hinaus und umfasst auch »mediumistische« (von einem Geist geführte) Künstlerinnen und Künstler, sogenannte »Einzelgänger« und Arbei-ten von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern mit Behin-derungen. Die Ausstellung im Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien widmet sich erstmals umfas-send weiblichen Positionen der Art Brut und führt in über 300 Werken von 93 Künstlerin-nen deren Vielfalt, Internationalität sowie die historischen und gegenwärtigen Dimensionen vor Augen. Ausstellung und Buch rücken die Künstlerinnen der Art Brut ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit und laden zum Entdecken eines schier unendlichen Spektrums künst-lerischer Produktion von Frauen ein. Denn wie überall gilt auch in der Kunst: Nur das, was wahrgenommen werden kann, existiert.

For the first time, the comprehensive exhibition at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien focuses on female positions in Art Brut and, with over 300 works by 93 female artists, demonstrates their diversity and internationality, as well as their historical and contemporary dimensions. The exhibition and book focus attention on the artists of Art Brut and invite visitors to discover a nearly infinite spectrum of artistic production by women. Die erste Monografie des in London leben-den kurdisch-irakischen Künstlers Walid Siti (*1954) zeigt Arbeiten aus 40 Jahren zu kom-plexen Themen wie Erinnerung und Verlust, Landschaft und Architektur, Identität und Zuge-hörigkeit. In seinen ortsbezogenen Installatio-nen, Gemälden, Skulpturen und Zeichnungen setzt Siti seine eigene Herkunft zur aktuellen politischen Lage im Nahen Osten in Bezug. Seine poetischen und gleichzeitig eindring- lichen Arbeiten schöpfen aus Metaphern und Assoziationen, die sich auf die ständigen Ver-änderungen und Herausforderungen in dieser Region beziehen. Sitis Arbeiten wurden welt-weit ausgestellt, darunter im Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, im L'Institut des Cultures d'Islam, Paris, und dreimal auf der Biennale Venedig. Sie sind Teil der Sammlungen des Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, des British Museum und des Victoria & Albert Museum, London, der Weltbank, Washington DC, und anderen.

London-based Kurdish-Iraqi artist Walid Siti’s (b.1954) first monograph presents an œuvre that spans over 40 years and traverses the com-plex terrains of memory and loss, landscape and architecture, as well as issues of identity and belonging. In his site-specific installations, paintings, sculptures and drawings Siti draws on his heritage in relation to current politics in the Middle East. In his work he evokes a set of metaphors and associations that poetically, yet forcefully, address the ongoing changes and challenges in the Middle East.Siti’s work was exhibited internationally, e.g. at Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, at L'Institut des Cultures d'Islam, Paris, at the Sharjah Biennial, and three times at the Venice Biennale. It is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the World Bank, Washington DC, among others.

Die Skulpturen im öffentlichen Raum des nie-derländischen Künstlers Auke de Vries (*1937) in Städten wie zum Beispiel Rotterdam, Bar-celona, Wiesbaden und Ludwigsburg sind zu Wahrzeichen geworden. The sculptures in the public space by Dutch artist Auke de Vries (b. 1937) have become landmarks in cities such as Rotterdam, Bar-celona, Wiesbaden, and Ludwigsburg. His autonomous sculptures have been shown in many solo exhibitions in museums over the past forty years, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany. Abstract, filigree constructions of geometric forms, often painted in color, seem to playfully resist gravity and deny the material qualities of the metal of which they are made. The publication accompanying the exhibitions in Goch and Cologne, which feature sculptures produced by Auke de Vries for the respective venues, presents the artist as both a sculptor and a draughtsman.

In seinen abstrakten Skulpturen verbindet Enrique Asensi die beiden klassischen Mate-rialien Stahl und Stein. Cortenstahl kontras-tiert dabei mit farblich so unterschiedlichen Steinen wie Diabas, Dolomit, Granit, Kalkstein oder Alabaster. Das Buch begleitet eine Ausstellungskoopera-tion. In den Flottmann-Hallen und im Skulp-turenpark in Herne sind die großformatigen Skulpturen zu sehen, im Kunstmuseum Gel-senkirchen werden mittlere und kleinere Skulp-turen, Entwurfszeichnungen und Wachsbilder gezeigt. Darüber hinaus bildet die Werkgruppe der »gelehnten Skulpturen« an beiden Stand-orten einen Schwerpunkt.Der Bildhauer Enrique Asensi (*1950) lebt und arbeitet bei Barcelona und in Köln. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich in zahlreichen inter-nationalen Sammlungen und auch im öffent-lichen Raum ist er sowohl in Deutschland als auch in Spanien mit seinen Skulpturen präsent.

In his abstract sculptures Enrique Asensi combines the two classic materials steel and stone: Corten steel contrasts with such dif-ferently-colored stones as diabase, dolomite, granite, limestone, or alabaster. The book accompanies a double exhibition. The large-format sculptures can be seen in the Flottmann-Hallen and the Skulpturenpark in Herne, while the medium-sized and smaller sculptures, draft drawings, and wax paintings are on display in the Kunstmuseum Gelsen-kirchen. In addition, the group of »leaning sculptures« forms a focal point at the venues in both cities.The sculptor Enrique Asensi (b. 1950) lives and works in Barcelona and Cologne. Asen-si's works can be found in numerous interna-tional collections, and he is also present in the public space with his sculptures in both Germany and Spain.

Der deutsche Maler Lars Theuerkauff (*1968) beginnt seine Arbeit mit verschiedenen Fotogra-fien zu einem Thema – sowohl eigene Aufnah-men als auch found footage aus dem Internet. Zwischen den Einzelbildern entdeckt er einen neuen Zugang zu alltäglich gewordenen Bilder-welten des Glücks, aber auch des Verderbens. Seine Malerei verdichtet diese Bildfolgen dann zu einem einzigen neuen Motiv. Die so entstan-denen Gemälde, beispielsweise eines innigen Moments zwischen Vater und Sohn oder von Gefangenen des IS kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung, sind Fenster und Spiegel zugleich. Sie lenken unsere Aufmerksamkeit nicht nur auf die Welt, in der wir leben, sondern auch auf uns selbst. Theuerkauff studierte in München Malerei und Bildhauerei bei Robin Page und Cristina Igle-sias und in Berlin in der Filmklasse von Heinz Emigholz. Nach zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland erscheint nun seine erste Monografie.

The German painter Lars Theuerkauff (b. 1968) begins his work by assembling a sequence of photographs on a certain topic, mostly shot by himself, but also found footage from the Internet. The artist discovers a new access to imageries of both bliss and wretchedness that have become far too common between the individual pictures. Theuerkauff’s paintings condense these sequences to new, single pic-tures. The resulting images, e.g. of a shared moment between father and son or of prison-ers of the IS rigth before being executed, are both window and mirror simultaneously. Not only do they draw our attention to the state of the world we live in, but also to ourselves. Theuerkauff studied painting with Robin Page and sculpture with Cristina Iglesias in Munich and was a member of Heinz Emigholz’s film class in Berlin. Following numerous national and international exhibitions, this is the first monograph devoted to his work.

Ultra Sounds ist die erste Studie über das Polish Radio Experimental Studio (PRES), ein frühes »Labor« für elektronische und elektro-akus-tische Musik und das einzige seiner Art über-haupt im Ostblock. Im Herbst 1957 gegründet, schufen Komponisten und Toningenieure dort herausragend originelle und anspruchsvolle Musik, »musique concrete« und Hörspiele jener Ära. In dem reich illustrierten Band äußern sich führende Musikwissenschaftler, Architek-tur-, Kunst- und Filmhistoriker. Interviews mit Toningenieuren, die in dem Studio arbeiteten, sowie Aufzeichnungen historischer Vorlesun-gen und Rundfunksendungen der damaligen Schlüsselfiguren ergänzen die Publikation. Sie bietet eine umfassende Darstellung des Stu-dios im Kontext des Revivals modernistischer Experimente im poststalinistischen Polen der 1960er-Jahre sowie eine genaue Analyse zahl-reicher zentraler Werke, die dort entstanden.

Ultra Sounds is the first study of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio (PRES), an early »laboratory« for the production of electronic and electro-acoustic music, and the first of its kind in the Eastern Bloc. It was established in fall 1957. Composers and engineers working there produced some of the most original and often challenging electronic music, »musique concrète« and radio plays of the era.The Studio formed an island of international connection, hosting many leading composers from the East and the West. This well illustrated book features essays by leading musicologists and architectural, art and film historians, as well as interviews with engineers who worked in the Studio and transcripts of historic lectures and broadcasts by key figures in its history. It offers a comprehensive account of the Studio in the context of the revival of modernist exper-iment in post-Stalinist Poland in the 1960s.
