Hofrat Prof. Dr. Karl FRITSCH (∗ 24.2.1864 in Wien, † 17.1.1934 in Graz)

AUSTRIA, Steiermark (=Styria), Gurktaler Alpen, Grebenzen, 7.7 km SW of Neu-markt, 700 m S of Grebenzen-Schutzhaus, trail of the ski lift, 47°02'45''N, 014° 19'55''E, grid number 8951/4, 1750–1800 m above sea level, near the man-made timber line, on twigs of Larix decidua (exposed to sunlight), 12 August 2010, collected and determined by Walter Obermayer (11993). Note: Thallus Pd+ rapidly turning red (TLC: fumarprotocetraric acid [maj.], protocetraric acid [tr.], confumarprotocetraric acid [tr.]), basal parts blackened, soralia partly fissure-like, partly tuberculate, pseudocyphellae present (at least on more basal parts of thicker branches). Other Bryorias might be intermixed. According to Myllys et al. (2011, Lichenologist 43: 617–638) DNA data suggest, that Bryoria subcana might be conspecific with B. fuscescens, B. chalybeiformis, B. lanestris, and even with B. implexa and B. capillaris.

Note: Partly intermixed with Gowardia nigricans, Alectoria ochroleuca and probably other Bryorias. Thallus Pd+ red (TLC: Fumarprotocetraric acid [maj.], protocetraric acid [tr.], con-fumarprotocetraric acid [tr.]), partly with short lateral branches, pseudocyphellae partly dis-tinct, fusiform or slit-like, depressed, soralia sparse. The specimens (formally determined as Bryoria chalybeiformis, but with fumarprotocetraric acid also in the esorediate thallus parts), could represent a ground inhabiting form of Bryoria americana.

Other Bryorias might be intermixed. According to Myllys et al.
