The relaxing shopping experience

There is scarcely any other city centre that is able to offer so many shopping opportunities within such a small radius as Hannover’s. All around the central square called Kröpcke you can enjoy a successful blend of elegant, exclusive shops and the colourful world of the big department stores. The Ernst August Galerie shopping centre and the Galerie Luise arcade offer diversity combined with lifestyle. Georgstrasse, the stylish boulevard where the people of Hannover love to stroll, lures shoppers with haute couture and high-class jewellery.

It is a particular pleasure to stroll around the Old Town (Altstadt), Hannover’s histo-ric nucleus, with its picturesque half-timbered buildings and cosy old-world pubs, its boutiques and art galleries. The Flea Market every Saturday is a cult event. But there are also plenty of shopping experiences to be enjoyed outside the confines of the city. Come and discover charming Wedemark, with the historic centres of the little towns that make it up, or the towns along the edge of the Deister ridge. Wunstorf and Neustadt am Rübenberge, too, are rewarding destinations for excursions, particularly in view of their proximity to Lake Steinhude.

Zahlreiche Feste und Musik-Events werden in Hannover alljährlich zu Pub-likumsmagneten. Große Open-Air-Konzerte in der AWD-Arena oder auf der Parkbühne locken Rock- und Popfans in Scharen. An Himmelfahrt wird die Stadt zur Jazzmetropole, wenn beim „enercity swinging hannover“ vor dem neuen Rathaus gefeiert wird.

Beim größten Schützenfest der Welt amüsieren sich Hunderttausende in Ka-russells und Partyzelten. Berühmt ist der kilometerlange Schützenausmarsch durch die Innenstadt. Zu den erfolgreichsten Volksfesten in Norddeutschland zählt auch das Maschseefest. Im Hochsommer wird Hannovers schönstes Ufer fast drei Wochen lang zur Party- und Ausgehmeile aus Kunst, Live-Mu-sik, Kinderprogramm und kulinarischer Vielfalt.

Ein phantastisches Live-Musik-Festival ist die sommerliche „Fête de la Musique“ – an 40 Plätzen beschallen 1.500 Musiker zehn Stunden lang die City. Freunde

On Ascension Day the city becomes a metropolis of jazz when the devotees of swing celebrate “enercity swinging hannover” outside the New Town Hall. At the biggest Markmen’s Fair in the world, hundreds of thousands have a wonderful time on the rides and in the marquees. The famous Grand Parade of the Marksmen through the city centre is several kilometres long. One of the most successful popular festivities in northern Germany is the Maschsee Lake Festival: at the height of summer Hannover’s most beautiful shore becomes a party boulevard, the place to be for almost three whole weeks, with art, live music, a special programme for the kids and a wide diversity of delicious things to eat and drink.

Überall in der Region gibt es reizvolle Flecken, wo landwirtschaftliche Tradi-tionen gepflegt werden. Seit 150 Jahren wird in Wennigsen am Rande des Deisters das „Historische Freischießen“ gefeiert, das auf die Bauern- und Bür-gerwehr des Mittelalters zurückgeht.

The summer highlight on and by Lake Steinhude is the “Festive Weekend”, with a dreamlike backcloth of illuminated boats, an aerial firework display and numerous attractions onshore. At the Lawnmower Tractor Race Meeting in Thönse, daredevil drivers compete against each other every year on souped-up tractors.

Everywhere in the region there are delightful spots where the traditions of the old farming communities are still upheld. The historic Free Shooting competition, which evokes the peasants’ and citizens’ militias of the Middle Ages, has been celebrated in Wennigsen, on the edge of the Deister Hills, for 150 years now.

Ein Juwel ohnegleichen Seit über 300 Jahren repräsentieren die Herrenhäuser Gärten feudale Lebens-art im Grünen. Ihr Herzstück, der Große Garten, zählt zu Europas bedeutenden Barockgärten. Wie einst die Hofgesellschaft, so flanieren heute die Besucher zwischen reich verzierten Parterrestücken, prächtigen Skulpturen und kunstvoll geschnittenen, illuminierten Hecken. Wasserspiele plätschern in versteckten Win-keln, die Große Fontäne beeindruckt mit ihrer 70 Meter hohen Wassersäule. Ge-schaffen von Sophie von der Pfalz, Kurfürstin von Hannover, ist der Große Garten eine der wenigen Parkanlagen ihrer Zeit, die in ihrer Grundstruktur erhalten sind.Ein faszinierendes Sinneserlebnis aus Spiegeln, buntem Glas und Kieselsteinen ist die Grotte. Die weltberühmte Künstlerin Niki de Saint Phalle hat mit diesem Werk ihren letzten Liebesbeweis an die Hannoveraner hinterlassen.

Eine architektonische Meisterleistung feierte Anfang 2013 Eröffnung: An sei-nem einstigen Platz wurde Schloss Herrenhausen, die Sommerresidenz der Welfen, als moderne Tagungsstätte und Museum hinter rekonstruierter Fassade neu errichtet. Zur Sommersaison öffnet das neue Museum Schloss Herrenhau-sen – eine Einrichtung der Landeshauptstadt Hannover, gefördert durch das Land Niedersachsen – seine Pforten: „Schlösser und Gärten in Herrenhausen

The jewel in Hannover’s crownFor over 300 years now, the Herrenhausen Gardens have stood for a splendid and sumptuous way of life in green surroundings. The heart of the ensemble, the Great Garden (Grosser Garten), is among the most important baroque gar-dens in Europe. Just as the ladies and gentlemen of the court once used to do, today’s visitors too can stroll pleasurably between the richly ornamented beds, the magnificent sculptures and the illuminated hedges, elaborately trimmed and shaped. Springing water babbles in hidden corners, while the Great Fountain rises to an impressive height of 70 metres. Created by Sophia, Princess Palatine and Electress of Hannover, the Great Garden is one of the few parks of that period that have been preserved in their basic structure down to the present day. The Grotto in the Great Garden is a fascinating experience for the senses, made up of mirrors, pebbles and coloured glass. This is the final love token bequeathed to the people of Hannover by the world-famous artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

The beginning of 2013 saw the opening of a new architectural masterpiece: Her-renhausen Palace, the Guelph dynasty’s summer residence, has been re-erected on its original site as a modern conference centre and museum behind a repro-duction of the historic façade. The new Herrenhausen Palace Museum will open in time for the summer season. Planned by the state capital of Hannover and

Im Sommer wird der Große Garten zur Traumkulisse für die KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen, ein hochkarätiges Festival aus Theater, Konzerten und Kunst-installationen. Das barocke Gartentheater bildet einen hinreißenden Rahmen für die Musical-Trilogie nach William Shakespeare. Traditionell begeistern renommierte Pyrotechniker beim Internationalen Feuerwerkswettbewerb ihr Publikum. Tänzer, Pantomimen und Musikanten bespielen die weitverzweigte Open-Air-Bühne beim „Kleinen Fest im Großen Garten“, einem der größten Kleinkunstfestivals in Deutschland. In der kühleren Jahreszeit wird die Saison nicht unterbrochen – dann stehen klassische Konzerte und das Wintervarieté in Galerie und Orangerie auf dem Programm.

Vis-à-vis zum Großen Garten befindet sich der Berggarten, ein botanisches Kleinod, das mit exotischer Blütenpracht begeistert. Hier ist eine der größten Orchideensammlungen Europas zu bewundern.

co-funded by the government of Lower Saxony, the new museum will present a comprehensive exhibition of “Palaces and Gardens in Herrenhausen – from Baroque to Modern”. The exhibits give visitors an entertaining introduction to the highly diverse world of palaces and gardens in Herrenhausen.

In summer the Great Garden becomes a dream backcloth for a top-drawer festival of drama, concerts and art installations known as the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen. The baroque Garden Theatre offers a charming venue for a trilogy of musicals based on plays by Shakespeare. Celebrated pyrotechnists thrill their audiences at the now traditional International Fireworks Competition. At the “Little Festival in the Great Garden”, one of Germany’s biggest festivals of artistry and small-scale performance, dancers, mime artists and musicians turn the gardens with all their nooks and crannies into one enormous open-air stage. But the sea-son is not interrupted even at cooler times of the year: concerts of classical music and the Winter Variety show take place in the Gallery and Orangery buildings.

Across the road from the Great Garden is the Hill Garden (Berggarten), a jewel of a botanic garden full of resplendent exotic blooms. One of Europe’s biggest col-lections of orchids can be admired here.

Exotische Landschaften

Der Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover zählt mit sieben phantastischen Themenwelten, über 3.000 Tieren, täglichen Tiershows und Fütterungen zu den bedeutendsten tou-ristischen Attraktionen Norddeutschlands. Hier gleiten die Besucher per Boot auf dem Sambesi durch die Savanne, folgen dem Evolutionspfad zum Gorillaberg oder beobachten Elefanten, Tiger und Pythons im Dschungelpalast. Im Outback warten Kängurus, Emus und Wombats bei einer Expedition vor glutroter Kulisse.

With its seven fantastic theme worlds, Hannover Adventure zoo is one of the most important tourist attractions in northern Germany, where you can observe more than 3,000 animals, watch daily shows and feeding times. Take a boat down the zambezi through the savannah, follow the Evolution Trail to the top of the Gorilla Mountain, or observe elephants, tigers and pythons in the Indian Jungle Palace. Kangaroos, emus and wombats await you as you make your expedition across the shimmering red landscape of the Outback.

Fascinating underwater worlds

On an area of 3,500 square metres in the Herrenhausen district of Hannover, visitors can experience the whole range of aquatic habitats from the River Leine to the Caribbean and the Amazon: with shellfish, freshwater stingrays and pira-nhas, Germany’s first SEA LIFE tropical aquarium is home to more than 5,000 aquatic creatures in 37 maritime habitats. In the eight-metre long glass tun-nel of the ocean aquarium, the spectators are only inches away from majestic sharks and turtles. A breath-taking path through the tropical plants of the rain forest leads across an amazing glass bridge, under which Cuban crocodiles lurk in the crystal clear water, baring their teeth.

Indigenous species

Visitors to the Bison Reserve in Springe to the south of Hannover can admire 100 different species of wild animals: mysterious wolves and sleek otters, mas-sive bison, magnificent brown bears and majestic birds of prey make up the fascinating diversity of this 220-acre wildlife park. A forest education centre offers hands-on projects and special themed days and also organises children’s birthday parties, helping to capture the imagination of young visitors and en-courage them to discover more about the animal kingdom.

The Opera House Ball is a social event par excellence, celebrated under a new thematic motto every year.

The Cupola Hall of Hannover Congress Centrum (HCC), which is Germany’s big-gest concert hall, regularly serves as the venue for appearance by leading stars of classical music. A further major draw for visitors is the “TANztheater INTER-NATIONAL” dance drama festival, at which top-ranking dance companies appear year after year. The GOP Varieté, a variety theatre that has achieved a world-wide reputation, serves up artistry, comedy and magic, garnished with music and cabaret. MI-MUSE, the biggest festival of cabaret and small-scale performance in northern Germany, takes place in Langenhagen twice a year, in the spring and the autumn. Lovers of musicals are delighted by the shows put on at the Theater am Aegi or in the baroque Garden Theatre in Herrenhausen Gardens. Highlight events of incred-ible diversity take place throughout the entire region, some of them in the most unexpected venues. The Garbsen Blues Matinee, for example, is a high-calibre attraction and a place of rendezvous for lovers of soul, blues and rock.

Hannover Region’s “Summer of the Arts” is a series of events organised jointly by more than 30 institutions, and offers both small, intimate concerts and performances by great names of the international music scene. In the “Klosterstollen”, a preserved coal mine in Barsinghausen, visitors can don helmet and overalls and set out on the trail of the “black gold”. Laatzen Museum of Aviation is a place for those who are fascinated by the history of technology, a place where they can allow their imaginations to soar; as is also the case at the “World of Aviation” experience exhibition at Hannover Airport. Am „Meer“ und hoch zu Ross

Oder Sie lassen sich mit der Familie im Auswandererboot zur Inselfestung Wilhelmstein schippern! Reit-sportler finden ihr Paradies im Nordosten der Region – ob auf dem eigenen Ross, auf einem Leihpferd oder gesellig in der Kutsche. Besonders die Wan-derer zieht es zum bewaldeten, 405 Meter hohen Deister mit seinen Naturer-lebnissen und historischen Schätzen. Wie ein fernes Märchenschloss sitzt die Marienburg auf einer Bergkuppe nahe der Stadt Pattensen. Der einstige Stammsitz der Welfenkönige strahlt weit ins Calenberger Land. Das prächtige Schloss im neugotischen Stil wurde Mitte des

Hannover Region boasts an untold diversity of attractive destinations for excursions. Lake Steinhude, the largest lake in Lower Saxony, draws yachting enthusiasts and windsurfers from far and wide, while cyclists love the magnificent ride around its shores. Or the whole family can embark on one of the traditional sailing boats called “auswanderer” for the crossing to the island fortress of Wilhelmstein. Horse-riders will find their paradise in the Burgdorfer Land, a land of equestrianism which they can explore either on their own trusty steeds, on a hired animal or in a cheerful party in a horse-drawn carriage. Ramblers in particular will be attracted to the wooded ridge of the Deister, which rises to a height of 405 metres and is full of historic treas-ures and marvellous natural scenery and wildlife. The most beautiful walks in the Deister have been collected in a ramblers’ guide available from Tourist Information.

Marienburg Castle stands like a distant fairy-tale palace on a lofty hill close to the town of Pattensen. This former seat of the Guelph kings of Hannover looks

Eine Rundreise auf dem Fahrrad ermöglicht der 160 Kilometer lange „Grüne Ring“. Und auf den 100 Kilo-metern des Deisterkreisels geht es manchmal auch hoch hinauf. Guided tours offer visitors some intriguing glimpses behind the scenes. In the warmer half of the year there is a programme of live music and drama. The former stables and coach house now accommodate a restaurant.

Hannover Region, in close cooperation with its 21 municipalities, has developed a network of cycle tracks 1,000 km in length: the “Biking Region”. A total of 15 signposted routes start from Maschsee Lake in the centre of Hannover and spread out in a star-shaped pattern, extending as far as the spacious recrea-tional areas of the region and on into neighbouring districts. The 160-km-long “Green Ring” provides a circular tour by bike, while the 100-km-long Deister circuit sometimes climbs pretty steeply to some highish altitudes.
