PREFACE - 1974

This is the annual report of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty during calendar year 1974.

Statistical analysis and data of this kind can be cold and lifeless. We pause to remember not a cold set of. statistics, but a tragic toll of 132 local, county, state and Federal law enforcement officers killed. They were brave officers -- they were dedicated -- they were heroes.

I have had the sad task of 'breaking the news' to the families of fallen officers and realize what such news does to change the lives of these survivors. The loss of these valiant officers tears the very fabric of the family and of our Nation.

What really is presented here is the story of police heroism and courage. Each incident tells of an action which reflects courage and civic commitment in which a police officer was called upon to give the utmost service that any man or woman can give to his fellow citizens.

Perhaps no one knO'tvs this better than a slain officer's family and his fellow officers vlho stand by his graveside and hear the echoing volleys of the fare\vell salute and the fading strains of taps.

Please God, grant that these officers, who have answered their final roll call, have not died in vain.

S~ley a ain ropolitan Police Department

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS KILLED 1974

The following summaries are based on information received from local, county, state and Federal law enforcement agencies in the United States and Puerto Rico involved in the investigation of these tragic incidents.

January

Florida

An Escambia County, Florida, Sheriff's Department deputy with one year of law enforcement service was shot and killed after stopping a suspicious vehicle containing two robbery suspects. The subjects~ white males 37 and 26 years of age, had robbed a local supermarket of approximately $2,000 in cash. After stopping the vehicle j the victim deputy, a white male 44 years of age, and one subject returne.d to the patrol vehicle for a radio communication. The subject shot the victirn deputy twice in the head with a .38 caliber handgun. Other officers responded, a chase ensued, and the subjects were subsequently stopped in Alabama. ~fuile being searched, one subject pulled a handgun and was shot and killed by one of the responding officers. Under gunfire f~om the responding officers, the second subject drove the vehicle a short distance, abandoned it and fled on foot into a wooded area. The money from the local robbery was found in the car and the second subject was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Michigan

A sergeant and a patrolman, white males 32 and 27 years of age, of the Detroit, Michigan, Police Department were shot and killed after responding to a domestic quarrel and shooting call at a residence. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers were met with a volley of gunfire coming from the interior of the residence. The sergeant, an elevenyear veteran law enforcement officer, sustained a fatal gunshot wound in the chest. The patrolman with four years of law enforcemen.t service was fatally wounded in the head. Both officers were slain with a .30 caliber carbine while attempting to take cover from the gunfire.
