Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis, am 18. November 1906 in Smyrna geboren, wurde als Alec Issigonis, später „Sir Alec“, als Ingenieur weltbekannt. Die Familie Issigonis stammte von der griechischen Insel Paros und betrieb in Smyrna eine Maschinenfabrik. Vater Konstantin Issigonis und Mutter Hulda Prokopp, die aus Bayern stammte, wan-derten mit ihrem Sohn, Alexander, nach England aus. Alec Issigonis entdeckte früh seine technische Begabung. Nach seinem Studium an der Battersea Polytechnic School erhielt er eine Anstellung bei Morris. Nach der Sueskrise im Oktober 1956 entwickelte er den aufs Notwendigste reduzierten MINI. Die Geburtsstunde der heutigen Blechikone begann mit einer ersten Skizze auf Tischtuch und Serviette. Das platzsparende Design veränderte die Automobilwelt und verhalf ihm zu frühem Ruhm. Als „Austin MINI“, „Morris MINI“, danach auch in Italien in Lizenz von „Iccocenti“, ging das Auto im Kleinformat in Serie. Tuner, wie John Cooper, nahmen sich seiner an und ebneten dem Autozwerg den Einzug in den Rennsport. Mit zahlreichen Rennerfolgen wurde der Kleine groß. Der größte Triumph auf seinem Konto ist wohl der Sieg bei der Mutter aller Rallyes, der „Monte“. Bald wurden so auch Popstars, Filmgrößen und Promis auf den MINI aufmerksam und verhalfen ihm zu seinem heutigen Kultstatus. Der MINI war und ist im Trend!

Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis was born in Smyrna on the 18th November 1906. Alec Issigonis later became ‘Sir Alec’, having achieved world fame as an automobile engineer. The Issigonis family came from the Greek island of Paros and ran a machine-building factory in Smyrna. His father, Constantine Issigonis, and his Bavarian mother, Hulda Prokopp, then emigrated with their son, Alexander, to England. Alec Issigonis soon discovered his propensity for all things technical. Once he had graduated from Battersea Polytechnic School he was employed by Morris. After the Suez Crisis in late 1956 Alec Issigonis developed a car reduced to the essentials, and the MINI – now an icon – was born. It began with a sketch on a tablecloth and a serviette. The space-saving design changed the world of the automobile and helped Issigonis achieve early fame. The small-format automobile went into serial production as the ‘Austin MINI’ and ‘Morris MINI’, and was subsequently licensed by Innocenti in Italy. Tuners like John Cooper also took the plucky MINI and prepared the ground for its introduction to the world of motor racing. Numerous racing successes earned this little car a big reputation. Its greatest triumph was prob-ably the one at the mother of all rallies in ‘Monte Carlo’. It was not long before pop stars, film stars and celebrities also fell in love with the MINI and helped it to gain the cult status it enjoys today. The MINI was in back then – and it’s been in ever since!

Shaped like a boot, Italy has always been a focal point for passions and desires – a treasure trove of cultural and scenic del-icacies. The German poet Heinrich Heine loved to stroll along the lanes of Italy with “open eyes and a dreaming heart”. Our southern neighbours have far more to offer than just their attractive geographical position. In its own unique way, Italy has al-ways been associated with motorcycles and automobiles.
