Created the above toolkit (as well as the event strategy and directions inside) to direct communities through the process of planning and executing a ‘mixer’ style event to be held at over 40 of Emeritus’ healthcare communities. The complete toolkit can be found on my online portfolio at behance.net/kristinadrenckpohl.

Merger Mingle Event Toolkit

Merger Mingle

Although only one community in each market is a “location host,” all communities will be helping to host the event. CRDs and EDs from all locations will have to work with the community the event will be held at to organize the event and delegate tasks/responsibilities. Communication is key, location hosts— Let the other communities know how they can help and what tasks you’d like them to be responsible for.

Below is a quick planning checklist that will be helpful in coordinating the event.

ASAP F Decide date and time of event. Every community will have the option to host their event from

4-6p.m. on one of the following days: Wednesday, August 20; Thursday, August 21; or Friday, August 22.

• You will be contacted by Corporate Marketing to confirm your event date. • Events must be scheduled at different times from other events in your market to give

advisors a greater probability of being able to attend the event. So have a 2nd date choice in case your 1st is taken.

2 weeks prior F A Place for Mom will be sending out the event invites via e-mail. Advisors will be requested to

RSVP to the host community’s ED. F Meet with Dining Services to establish refreshment and food menu and schedule their preparation.

• Menu suggestions: mix of light and heavy appetizers, bite-sized dessert spread, wine/beer, soda/coffee/water

F Decide on decor (flowers, candles, tablecloths, etc.)• Figure out what needs to be rented/bought, and timing for delivery/pick-up.

F Create or schedule the entertainment.• Background music for the entire event or other desired entertainment.

F Recruit staff to help at the event and assign specific job duties (greeters, set-up, tear-down, hand out food/refreshments, etc.).

F Meet with staff and generate excitement for the “Big Day.”• Give an overview of the day and discuss their responsibilities, and staff that will be needed.• Discuss dress for the day (i.e. dress-up, shirt and tie, and/or clean, well pressed uniforms).• All participants should be thoroughly trained and oriented in uniqueness of community and

familiar with merger info and FAQs.

Event Planning Checklist

Merger MingleEvent Planning Checklist continued

1 week prior F Check table cloths and skirts (if using). Wash and iron if necessary. F Complete detailed cleaning of rooms and grounds involved in the event (include entryway,

hallways, bathrooms, etc). Ensure building is looking its best. F Confirm time, date, and menu specifics with Dining Services. F Confirm all collateral has been printed/has arrived in mail, and is ready to be handed out to APFM

Advisors.• Check for accuracy and print errors.• Shared Market tri-fold will arrive in the mail.• The below pieces are to be printed locally by your community:

- “Merger Handout- for Advisors” - “Merger Handout- for Advisors’ families” - “Merger FAQ Handout- For Advisors” - “Merger FAQ Handout- For Advisors’ families”

F Check that decorations, flowers, entertainment, utensils, food tables and equipment, etc. are ready for event.

F Review and assign any final details.

One Day prior F Quick meeting with staff to go over last minute details and answer questions. F Check on food preparation.

Day of event F Set up rooms- chairs, decorations, and any sound system equipment you need.

• Allow for plenty of time to check sound system and troubleshoot if needed. F Set up refreshments an hour before. F Set up sign-in form for guests to obtain names + contact information (for thank you emails). F Get event staff in place ½ hour before. F Have a great event!

After event F Send a thank you to attendees.

Contact Corporate Marketing at [email protected] with any questions.

MERGER FAQS For Families

3

Q. Will my rates or care fees be increasing?A. No, the merger itself will not impact pricing. We work

with residents one at a time and economic arrangements

and levels of care are unique to each resident’s needs.

Historically, rates in senior housing are affected by such

things as operating costs, changes in the regulatory

environment, general economic conditions, and local

market competitive dynamics. There are some subtle

differences between the two companies in terms of a menu

of pricing, and our packaging of services is different in

terms of care planning and price structures.Q. Will the quality of care go down because of the

size of Brookdale?A. The goal of this merger wasn’t to become the largest, just

to be the best provider of high quality senior living. By

combining the brain power and talent of the two largest

senior living providers, we will be able to create innovative

new programs and services to continue to meet the ever-

changing needs of our residents and their families. Because

of this, the quality of care will likely get even better.Q. The reputation of Emeritus has been tarnished

due to the Frontline investigation. Why is

Brookdale merging with a company with such a

tarnished reputation?A. Brookdale would never compromise the care we provide

to residents and are confident that Emeritus communities

reflect our high standards of care. Like Brookdale, Emeritus

is also blessed with thousands of passionate, highly

engaged associates who are committed to serving seniors

every day.

The Frontline broadcast sensationalized a few incidents

that happened at a few Emeritus communities many

years ago. We feel the broadcast was unfair and did not

reflect the superior care Emeritus communities nationwide

provide their residents and families. Our profession is to

care for one of the most fragile populations in society. We

understand the risks involved, and we take their prevention

very seriously. We have extremely strict policies that

are designed to prevent foreseeable risks and minimize

errors as much as possible. On those unusual and rare

occasions, when those systems fail, we are devastated

and will work tirelessly to address and resolve. Moreover,

both companies are committed to continuous quality

improvement and this is an excellent example of an

opportunity to share best practices to ensure an exceptional

experience for seniors and their families.Q. How can I learn more about this merger? A. You can visit either of our dedication websites about

the merger: www.BrookdaleForward.com or www.

EmeritusForward.com. Q. Who do I talk to if I have a concern?

A. Please speak with your A Place for Mom Senior Living

Advisor. Your Advisor will also have contacts and resources

to help address questions where more information may be

needed.

MERGER FAQS For Families

2

Q. Will Emeritus communities have a price increase? A. The merger will not impact pricing. We work with residents one at a time and economic arrangements and levels of care are unique to each resident’s needs. Historically, rates in senior housing are affected by such things as operating costs, changes in the regulatory environment and general economic conditions.

Q. How big will the new company be?A. The new company will have over 1,100 communities in 46 states, with the capacity to serve more than 112,000 seniors and their families. It will employ more than 80,000 people.

Q. Will there be a change to the staff-to-resident ratio?A. No, all staffing decisions will continue to be decided by each individual community to ensure residents’ needs are met.

Q. What about the resident/staff problem resolution policies?A. First, we would hope that if a resident or family has a concern, they would feel comfortable taking it to the management of their community. However, if they don’t, Brookdale has two separate hotlines – one for residents and their families (Resident and Family Hotline) and one for employees (Integrity line). Emeritus uses one hotline for residents, families and employees (Ethics First).

Both Brookdale and Emeritus hotlines will continue to run their same operations with no change day one and over time will convert to the Brookdale platforms.

Q. Will billing processes change?A. Starting November 1, Brookdale will generate and produce the Emeritus resident invoices.

Q. How will the company manage stockholder’s profit vs. care for residents? A. This merger will create the first truly national senior living company offering the most comprehensive set of senior care solutions. Being a public company requires performance and stock holder satisfaction. Providing

superior care to our residents will result in successful growth to keep our company operating smoothly and effectively. Brookdale and Emeritus Senior Living are well-matched for this purpose, and this decision makes sense from both a care and business standpoint. We share a rich heritage and similar strengths, including customer-focused cultures and a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation. We also have a shared value that is at the foundation of everything we do – we are passionately committed to making a difference in the lives of those in our care.

Q. Can families moved loved ones easily from one community to another – either Brookdale or Emeritus? A. Being nimble and able to move residents throughout the care continuum and between communities is a premier goal as the two companies merge.

Q. Are the Emeritus communities “stable”? A. Yes, the Emeritus communities are very stable and will continue their reputation of providing superior care to residents under the Brookdale name.

Q. Are there changes to the levels of care? A. The legacy Emeritus communities will continue to utilize the wEcare assessment tool. Over time, the levels of care/assessments will transition to the Brookdale platform. The transition is scheduled to begin in 2015.

Q. Will Brookdale honor rates already given? A. Yes, the new company will honor all contracts that are in place. Over time, we will migrate to common forms.

Q. Will there be contractual changes? A. Yes. The new company will honor all contracts currently in place and over time, we will migrate to common forms.

MERGER FAQS For Families

1

Q. Why did Brookdale® and Emeritus® decide to

merge?

A. We believe this merger will be good for all seniors. With

the nation’s senior population growing, more seniors

and families are in need of senior living and senior care

services. This merger will create the first truly national

senior living company offering the most comprehensive set

of senior care solutions.

Brookdale and Emeritus Senior Living are well-matched for

this purpose, and this decision makes sense from both a

care and business standpoint. We share a rich heritage and

similar strengths, including customer-focused cultures and

a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.

We also have a shared value that is at the foundation

of everything we do - we are passionately committed to

making a difference in the lives of those in our care.

Q. What are the biggest differences between

Emeritus and Brookdale and how will care be

different with the new company?

A. Frankly, what’s interesting is how similar our companies

are. Brookdale and Emeritus have shared values that are

at the foundation of everything we do - we are passionately

committed to making a difference in the lives of those for

whom we care, and we value honesty, integrity, partnership,

and trust. In both organizations, our employees view what

they do as more than a job; it’s a calling. Together, we will

remain committed to listening to our residents’ needs and

concerns, and tailoring our services to meet those needs.

We are both leaders in our industry because we have done

the right things. We plan to do observations to understand

how and why things are done a certain way and over

time combine our processes in such things as the dining

programs and clinical services platforms. It’s important to

note that both companies take of care residents’ one person

at a time.

Q. What benefits will residents enjoy because of the

merger?

A. We believe there will be many significant benefits, including:

• Combining the brain power and talent of the two largest

senior living providers will allow us to expand and

improve upon the services that our residents receive.

• With more resources, more can be done to enhance

programs and services.

• With more resources, we can continue to rejuvenate

and renovate the living spaces at our communities.

• We can also invest in systems and technology that

will open new worlds for our residents and allow our

employees to focus on what they do best – care for our

residents and families.

As we combine resources and share our best practices, we

will continue innovating new approaches for senior care.

We intend to continue to shape best practices that will

benefit our residents and provide a standard of excellence

care model for all seniors.

Q. What programs and services will the new

company provide?

A. By combining the expertise and resources, we have the

opportunity to expand our programs and services, providing

even more solutions for seniors including:

• Independent Living

• Assisted Living

• Alzheimer’s and dementia care

• Skilled Nursing

• Rehabilitative Therapies

• Home Health Care

• Hospice

Even more importantly for seniors is the fact that we now

offer more flexibility in lifestyle choices. For example,

many of your families are concerned about finding the

most affordable options, while others are looking for a bit

of luxury. Now, we’ll be able to offer both options – and a

range of choices in between.

Q. What will change for the residents of each

company?

A. The residents of both companies will not be directly affected

by the merger, except that they will benefit from more

services and programs as the partnership evolves. They will

continue to receive the same excellent care and continue to

be assisted by the same staff members they have come to

know and love and they will continue to enjoy all the same

amenities their community offers.

Brookdale.com

Welcome to the new Brookdale!

Brookdale® and Emeritus® Senior Living are now one company, with more than 1,100 communities across the country. This newly formed company – to be known as Brookdale – will be able to serve more than 112,000 seniors and their families with a workforce of over 80,000 compassionate and caring employees.

Yet, becoming large is not as important as providing great care.

By uniting the expertise and resources of the nation’s two leading senior living companies, we can provide a full complement of senior solutions in senior living, home health, hospice, rehabilitative therapies, and long-term care. Even more important is the fact that we now offer more flexibility in lifestyle choices, for those concerned about finding the most affordable options, and others who are looking for a bit of luxury.

Residents and their families will also benefit from the merger in several meaningful ways.• By combining the brain power and talent of the two largest senior living providers, we will be

able to create innovative new programs and services to continue to meet the ever-changing needs of our residents and their families.

• With more resources, more can be done to enhance programs and services. • With more resources, we can continue to rejuvenate and renovate the living spaces at our

communities.

There has never been a better time for seniors to find ways to continue to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Prospective Mashburn Foundation WebsiteThis website was created in my Web Design I class. Each student created their own prospective website for The Mashburn Scholarship Foundation from beginning to end within the parameters of what the foundation wanted from the site. I went through all the steps of creating a website- from building an information architecture flowchart and wireframe to designing a mock-up and writing the HTML and CSS code.
