As part of the Diocesan Missionary Cooperative plan, Rev. Matthias Alonyenu

C.S. Sp. will join us next week-end. I am looking forward to him being with us. Currently

in the Theology Department at Notre Dame du Lac, he is a member of the Congregation

of the Holy Spirit commonly referred to as the Spiritans. The name of the Order is

The Congregation of the Holy Spirit (full title: Congregation of the Holy Spirit under the

protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary; or in Latin: Congregatio Sancti Spiritus sub

tutela Immaculati Cordis Beatissimae Virginis Mariae. (notice the initials):

conversation?)

The U.S. Spiritans are a part of a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded in

France in 1703 called the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. Today they have nearly three

thousand priests, brothers and Lay Spiritan Associates. With missions in over sixty countries

around the world, they are involved in many diverse ministries including education, parish

work, and refugee ministry.

Their motto is One Heart. One Spirit.

In the United States, they dedicate themselves to working with the poor and marginalized in places

where finding ministers is difficult. Their efforts include education, parish ministry, and retreat ministry in

communities from Rhode Island to California.

U.S. Spiritans place a great emphasis on education. They work in four universities,

two graduate programs of theological education, two secondary schools and several

chaplancies.

Founder Claude Poullart des Places was born in Rennes, France. The nobility of his

family went as far back as the middle ages, but it was their extraordinary generosity and

magnanimity that made his parents exemplary Christians and citizens of the seventeenth

century—a time in history of great hardship for common people. By the time he graduated

with a law degree in 1700, Claude was already directing his energies toward the needs of the

poor. At the age of 24, he chose to become a priest. As one of the youngest founders of a major religious

congregation, he accomplished so much and influenced so many other young people during his short life that he

continues to be a role model for young people today. Like them, he, too, had to struggle with all the agonies and

ecstasies of growing up and making career decisions that at first were not fully understood or approved by his

friends, his professors or even his family.

1703: Founding of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. While still in the seminary—on Pentecost in

1703—Claude Poullart des Places founded “The Seminary of the Holy Ghost,” a community dedicated to

evangelization, the alleviation of poverty, and the provision of material and spiritual support to future

seminarians.

1732: First Spiritan missionaries in North America. Spiritan priests began their international work

among the Micmac Indians and Acadians in French Canada. Spiritans also sent missionaries to China, Cambodia,

Vietnam, Thailand (Siam), and India.

The twentieth century and beyond has been marked by spectacular growth of the Church, especially in

Africa. By the end of the twentieth century, the most vibrant experiences of the church were to be found in the

Southern hemisphere.

Wednesday, 25 July, there will be a cemetery meeting

of our Cluster. Much is happening, more is on the horizon.

(seems Federal, State and Church laws keep multiplying). A

few particular aspects that will be addressed in future

bulletins: who may use the cemetery; foundations; compliant

headstones; fees, the list goes on. These have been published

previously. Some people just don’t get it! I KNOW there are

some rumor mongers who speak as if they know everything

about cemetery policies (Federal, State and Church) but they don’t. More later!
