Cadet Captain Guiney Receives Top AwardBy Lt Col Dennis D. Barron

The Middle East Region held its annual conference and banquet on April, 21st, in Richmond, Virginia. As part of that con-

ference, the MER conducted its Cadet Speak-Off Contest. The Cadet Speak-Off is a communications activity that providesthe opportunity for cadets from the region to compete against each other in a public speaking contest. The categories of thepublic speaking event are: Impromptu Speech, Basic Speech, and Advance Speech.

C/Capt Mark Guiney participated in the Impromptu Speech category of the contest by speaking from 3 to 5 minutes about

“the CAP experience he uses to recruit other young people into CAP”. Cadet Guiney bested almost a dozen other contest-ants to win the top prize in the Impromptu Category. Cadet Guiney not only won a trophy, which was presented to him bythe MER Commander, he also got to deliver his speech to the audience attending the MER Banquet.

Cadet Guiney was later congratulated on his achievement by both the National CAP Commander, MG Antonio J. Pineda, and the National Vice Commander, BG Amy Courter, who were present for his speech to the banquet audience.

Adopt-a-Highway & Bunker Clean Up Detail

I am very pleased to announce that the Martinsburg Squadron completed another highly successful litter pick-up on Satur-day, April 28th! The 16 squadron members and 2 visitors picked up approximately 38 bags of trash this morning. We can

only estimate the number of bags that were filled because the Dept. of Highways came by before we even finished andstarted picking up our filled trash bags. That was really a first!

This also marked the beginning of the 10th year that the unit has been participating in the Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) pro-gram. During that time, the unit has picked up a total of 838 bags of trash, which translates into 29,330 pounds (or 14.66tons) of litter along the Paynes Ford and Airport Roads.

My thanks to everyone that participated! I hope you enjoyed the pizza, provided by the squadron, and there may be giftsfrom the AAH program coming later for those who helped out today.

A Successful Find

At approximately 2000, Thursday, June 21, 2007 The West Virginia Wing was notified by the Air Force Rescue Coordi-nation Center (AFRCC) that they had been receiving signals from an emergency locator transmitter in an area near Hedgesville, WV.

WV Director of Emergency Services, Capt Tom Hoffmann contacted Martinsburg’s Emergency Services Officer, Maj BartRogers, with GPS coordinates and other information. The air search team consisted of Lt Col. Shelton Davis and Capt.David Porter. As N834CP was lifting off Maj Bart Rogers and 1st Lt Russ Voelker had the squadron van pointed towards

Green’s Landing near Hedgesville. Green’s Landing is a private grass landing strip with adjacent homes and aircraft han-gars.

After multiple passes over the Green’s Landing area a very faint signal was heard but not enough to pinpoint a target. The ground team however had better luck picking up a slightly louder version and after checking the area traced it to asmall private aircraft inside a hangar. After awakening the owner he related that he hadn’t flown the aircraft that day buthad done some maintenance on it around the time AFRCC started receiving the ELT signals. The find occurred at 2250.
