Thunder Over The Blue Ridge Thunder Over The Blue Ridge Air ShowAir Show

Martinsburg, WV -- Civil Air PatrolWings from Maryland, Virginia, and WestVirginia volunteered its assistance over theLabor Day Weekend to the West VirginiaAir National Guard's 167th Airlift Wing ashey hosted an open house and air show on

September 4 - 5, 2010 in Martinsburg,W.Va.

The group consisted of units from the Win-chester Composite Squadron (Virginia),Hagerstown Composite Squadron(Maryland), and Charleston, Clarksburg,Martinsburg, and Mid Valley Squadrons(West Virginia Wing).

Tens of thousands of people were expectedo attend, and state, local, and military po-ice were prepared to accommodate thenflux of visitors expected.

Building on the success of the 2008 Spirit of America Over Martinsburg Air Show, the167th Airlift Wing, along with the EasternWest Virginia Regional Airport, and the

United Way of the Eastern Panhandle,brought together some of the nation's mostexciting aerial demonstration teams whichncluded the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds

and the U.S. Army Golden Knights.

Various military and civilian aircraft andaviation themed exhibits were also on hand.Civil Air Patrol set up a recruitment boothwhich featured a 1940 restored Stinsonairplane used in CAP coastal patrols to

search for German U-Boats,and a CAP Cessna 182.

The highlight at the end of theair show was when CAP hadthe extreme pleasure to meetLt Col Derek Routt, opera-tions officer for the USAFThunderbirds. Routt stoppedby the recruitment booth andlater took cadets and seniorofficers to one of the F-16aircraft used by the Thunder-birds. A group photo withRoutt was also taken.

(Kingwood, WV) TheWest Virginia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol re-cently completed its an-nual cadet summer en-campment at Camp Daw-son, an Army National

Guard Training Facility,in Kingwood, WV. Thisweek long event is heldeach year in order to givethe CAP cadets a greaterunderstanding of CAPand its Air Force mis-sions and capabilities,develop the cadets lead-ership skills, enhancetheir interpersonal andtime management skills,and instill a sense of pride and discipline inthem.

During the course of theweek, the cadets got to

fly in a Black Hawk heli-copter, received Landand Water SurvivalTraining, rappelled off a100 foot tower, firedrifles on the firing range,practiced their drill and

ceremonies, learned howto cross rope bridges,completed both the lead-ership reaction and confi-dence course, built andlaunched model rockets,and much more. Theencampment ended witha Pass and Review Pa-rade, followed by a for-mal graduation cere-mony.

A total of 104 cadetsfrom around the stateattended this years en-campment, including 13cadets and four officers

from the MartinsburgComposite Squad-ron. The local CAPmembers participating inthis years encampmentwere: Cadet BasicEmily Amador, C/CMSgt

To be honest, I think that the encampment

week was probably themost fun I've had this

year, and I highly en-courage everyone togo. Its a great experi-ence and I plan on at-tending next year, re-marked MartinsburgMember, C/CMSgt TimDye.

The West VirginiaWing and EncampmentCommander, Col DennisD. Barron, stated that, It was a very busy week,

filled with lots of handson activities for the ca-

dets. CAP cadets get theopportunity to do someamazing things that other

youth groups cannot offer. We receive a lot of assistance from the Armyand Air National Guard

each year which helps tomake our encampmentsso successful. I want tothank those groups for their assistance and con-gratulate all the cadetswho completed the en-campment, said Barron.

Adopt-A-Highway Picnic

On Saturday, August 7, 2010, WV WingCommander Dennis Barron accompaniedMartinsburg Squadron members: LarryDean, Jeff Main, Nathaneal Main, Anto-nio Sanchez and guest, Mina Goodrich, tothe Adopt-a-Highway Appreciation DayPicnic, at Cacapon Resort State Park, 10miles from Berkeley Springs, in Morgan

County.The day's activities included games, scav-enger hunts, geo catching and other events,as well as exhibitors during the day andlunch.

Youth Fair Parking Detail

After a years absence, the members of theMartinsburg Composite Squadron, onceagain, took on the task of parking cars forthe Berkeley County Youth Fair. Thisfundraising event raised $2,500.00 and ranfrom August 1 - 7. An daily average of 14members, parents and guests braved theelements to park thousands of vehicles.

In appreciation for those who helped makethe youth fair parking detail a success, thesquadron held a swimming party, on Fri-day, August 20th, at the home of 1st LtDirk and Mrs. Carol Stansbury.

Thursday, August 2nd - Martinsburg members clean the squadron aircraft and van in prepara-tion for the Thunder Over The Blue Ridge Air Show.

C/SSgt. Samantha Pate completed the JROTC Aerospace &Technology Honors Camp, held in Albuquerque, NM. Cadets atthis activity work with the top 1% of JROTC cadets in the coun-try. Students experience the collegiate world of science, engi-neering, and technology and have the opportunity to see bothcivilian and military career opportunities within these academicfields

C/2Lt Andrew Mitchell completed Cadet Officer School , heldat Maxwell AFB, AL. COS is an in-depth study of the skills of leadership. In addition to classes and seminars, a wide variety of top military and industry leaders come as guest speakers to dis-cuss their experiences with the cadets. Topics include humanrelations, critical thinking, leadership and national security issues

C/Col David Hill traveled to Germany with IACE , He was alsoon the staff of this years Cadet Officer School, at Maxwell AFB,AL. Each summer, hundreds of cadets from eighteen nationscome together to broaden their understanding of aviation andforeign cultures through the International Air Cadet Exchange(IACE). Selection to the International Air Cadet Exchange makesa cadet one of CAPs and Americas ambassadors to theworld.

Four members of the local squadron have completed Civil Air Patrol Na-ional Cadet Special Activities. NCSAs are designed to provide cadets withncentives and motivate them toward greater participation in the Cadet Pro-

gram. Special activities broaden the experiences of participants and contrib-ute directly to knowledge of career opportunities, both in the military and inhe civilian fields. After considering 1,532 applicants, 915 were slotted to

attend some 30+ summer activities; 599 were first-time attendees.

C/CMSgt. Tim Dye completed Honor Guard Academy , held inWestminster, MD. The Honor Guard Academy's objective is toprovide leadership training to cadets and adult members that willenable them to introduce the Honor Guard Program within theirunit, wing, and region. The Honor Guard Program contributes tothe Drug Demand Reduction Program, recruiting and retentionthrough a highly visible public relations program, as those mem-
