Dear Madam and Sir,

Ever since the world’s first postage stamp came into use in Great Britain on

6 May 1840, stamps have been a source of endless fascination to collectors around

the world. In fact this is truer than ever before: over recent years, they have enjoyed

a remarkable renaissance – not just as a collector’s item, but as an investment.

Since 1970, we have been catering to the passions of thousands of collectors inter-

nationally. We share that passion, but we also have a professional obligation to them,

because this is a market in which large sums of money change hands. One of the

biggest challenges we face in the twenty-first century is to help collectors preserve and

increase the value of their philatelic treasures while maintaining a relationship based

on trust and security.

We do this by adhering consistently to the philosophy which has made our auctions

so successful, and by adopting an attitude of openness and partnership towards

the countless buyers and sellers we do business with the world over. This creates

the basis for a trusting and fruitful relationship which enables us, as one of the

world’s leading stamp auction houses, to achieve the best possible results for them.

You can rely on us.

Yours sincerely

Peter Rapp und Marianne Rapp Ohmann

Stamp auctions – philately’s marketplace

During the market’s 170-year history, people have developed many different ways of sell-

ing stamps, but auctions have long played the most important part in maintaining

and increasing the value of collections and individual items. Millions of collectors

and dealers worldwide use the sophisticated range of services offered by auction houses,

because they know that auctions work.

At Rapp, we pride ourselves on having held the biggest sale in the history of philately, with

stamps worth over 33 million Swiss francs going under the hammer over an eight-day

period. Our 2007 auction once again set new international benchmarks, and every one

of our auctions achieves sales of many millions of francs. We are doing our very best to

maintain this record.

Stamp sales: your success is in your hand!

Experience shows that selling at auctions gives you the certainty of realising the real value

of your stamps, and everything we do is geared towards this end. Auctioneer Peter Rapp

is responsible for offering the stamps entrusted to him to thousands of potential buyers

around the world, and selling them to the highest bidder. He has a detailed knowledge

of supply and demand, collectors and dealers, values and prices, risks and opportunities

– and it’s this that makes the difference.

1969, Peter Rapp in discussion with a customer

A success story

We have been accumulating this know-how since 1970, with outstanding success.

One of many highlights has been a Guinness Book of Records listing for the world’s

largest stamp auction by volume of sales.

Rapp auctions are an important showcase and meeting place for the international

philatelic business. Year after year, thousands of collectors submit postal bids, and

hundreds of collectors, dealers, agents and experts from several dozen countries

attend in person. Over the decades, these demanding buyers have relied on the

efficient services of our team of leading experts and up to seventy staff.

Our customers know from experience that they can expect results. Thousands of

individuals, dealers, investors, probate administrators and public institutions

from all over the world, with a particular focus on Germany, Austria and

Switzerland, have already put their trust in us. Our qualifications also persuaded

the Royal Philatelic Society, whose patron is the Queen, to use us to auction the

spectacular Alma Lee collection of classic Swiss stamps for 1.9 million Swiss francs.

As a 100-percent family-owned Swiss corporation, we have so far auctioned stamps

worth a total of around 400 million Swiss francs for our clients.

For four decades, Peter Rapp AG has been one of the world’s biggest stamp

auctioneers. Our exclusive annual auctions attract collectors and dealers from

all over the world.

Decades of know-how

Know-how is the key to gaining the trust of customers and succeeding as a business. A suc-

cessful stamp auctioneer needs philatelic know-how borne of long experience, and the ability to

work on behalf of the customer and in their own interest, to make the right business decisions.

An auction house like Peter Rapp AG must

› Maintain an overview of the market

› Keep pace with changing technology

› Maintain contacts with collectors and dealers worldwide

› Deal fairly with everyone it does business with

› Be extremely discreet

› Have a good credit rating and plenty of liquidity

› Present sellers’ goods attractively

› Create trust by displaying know-how, commitment and efficiency

Services you can rely on

Quality is our primary concern.

This is true not only of the lots on sale in our stamp and coin auctions, but also of

the wide range of services we provide.

The entire infrastructure of our spacious headquarters is designed for major international

stamp auctions. We have one of the world’s most impressive auction rooms, an elegant,

light-filled foyer, maximum-security strongrooms, and even a large cafeteria for our guests

from all over the world.

The same standards of quality applied to the philatelic and business services we provide

to the many collectors, estate and probate administrators, and investors who entrust their

valuable collections to us for auction. Every customer receives a high-quality individual

service, from advice and appraisals to accepting their collection, carefully preparing it for

Providing a superb service is all about style, and that is something we place a great

deal of emphasis on.

But this is only one side of the coin. Our spacious premises offer many opportunities for

relaxed conversation in small or large groups, and for rest and relaxation amid the hectic

pace of the auction itself.

The very popular cafeteria, which is open throughout the auction, offers a wide range of

culinary delights for our guests’ physical well-being.

Our experienced and highly trained staff will be happy to deal with your questions and

requests, no matter how large or small. There is no problem we can’t find a rapid solution

to. We want every guest to feel at home and looked after: they’re primarily here for the

stamps, so we look after everything else.

Rapp auc t ions – an experience in their own right

A stamp auction is essentially a series of commercial transactions, but it is also a lot more

than that. For a start, it is a focus of attention for the entire philately industry, so we make

every effort and spare no expense in ensuring that our auctions are not simply a place to

buy and sell stamps, but also enjoyable social events. And we are proud to say that we

succeed in this.

Come and soak up the atmosphere!

If you’ve ever been to a Rapp auction, you’ll know that it’s an unforgettable experience.

This is partly because of the sale itself: this is probably the only place in the auction world

where you’ll see so many buyers from so many different countries attending in person.

The babel of languages sometimes stretches the skills even of our polyglot employees,

and the rapid toing and froing between postal, telephone and floor bids, and between the

auction room and our numerous large viewing rooms, make for a truly exciting experience.

It is this excitement, combined with the exquisite quality of the lots on offer, which leads

so many people to travel often long distances to attend in person.

«You really must see one for yourself !

serv ice, and a world-class auct ion.

You have to experience a Rapp auct ion

Rapp auctions – there’s no better place for a shopping spree

Each year we hold a major international auction in our purpose-built premises in Wil,

where high-spending customers from all over the world snap up stamps, coins

and postcards holdings worth many millions of Swiss francs.

Our sophisticated sale strategies and huge customer demand ensure that lots rarely re-

main unsold, instead attaining prices at and often above the market level.

Four letters that make a very special auction: RAPP

During sales, our large, comfortable and very elegant auction room is usually full to

overflowing, and we often have to add extra rows of seats. Much the same is true of the

spacious viewing rooms covering several storeys of the building. Everywhere you look is

frenetic activity, all of it centred on stamps. Rapp auctions have traditionally exerted an

enormous attraction on international collectors, dealers, investors and market observers.

Your security is important to us.

We have always placed a great deal of emphasis not just on the quality of the items we

sell, but also on the security of buyers and sellers. This is another reason why so many

people come to Wil on a regular basis.

We make every effort to ensure that buyers have the maximum possible legal security.

We believe it is very important for individual lots to be certified by competent experts,

so we provide a ten-year guarantee

› of authenticity for all stamps,

› postmarks

› and frankings

in lots certified by Martin Eichele at the Briefmarken Prüfstelle [stamp expertising centre]

Basel, and a one-year guarantee for lots certified by other experts.

But even experts make mistakes, and if one does occur we won’t hide behind small print.

If you’re a buyer and you suffer a loss as result, we won’t just put you in touch with the

seller to sort out the problem with them. We will deal with it ourselves, and wherever

possible we will decide in your favour.

nomic security, and it’s no coincidence that many of the world’s most valuable

We do the work, and you reap the benef its

We advertise in philatelic journals worldwide, year-round and on a large scale, publicis-

ing the highlights of forthcoming auctions so that potential buyers can plan accordingly.

We also send out regular mailings and lavishly illustrated brochures, as well as dozens of

carefully timed press packs to the print and broadcast media so that our sales are not just

publicised in specialist titles. We attend trade fairs and exhibitions to prepare for sales and

get our message across to customers, and we regularly update our website,

www.rapp-auktionen.ch.

All this ensures that our auctions are publicised worldwide long in advance. Advertising is

planned and coordinated in-house with the help of our professional graphics department,

so we are always one step ahead of our competitors where marketing is concerned. This

has tangible financial benefits for our sellers.

Sales and market ing – planned right down to the last detail

The auction business is highly dependent on maintaining long-term contacts, and we

have always placed a great deal of emphasis on developing relationships of trust with

collectors, dealers and investors all over the world. We have a reputation for having our

finger on the pulse of the world of philately, which is why so many people treat us as

their first port of call.

The auction catalogue – using quality to sell quality

When all is said and done, a good sales strategy is about telling people what you have

to sell and making an impression on them. One of the recipes for our success is the

huge expense and exceptional care that goes into putting together our luxury auction

catalogues. If appropriate, we produce separate, exclusive catalogues for collections

of outstanding importance.

We publish large numbers of our large-format luxury catalogues – comprehensive, detailed

and with colour illustrations of exceptional quality. These ensure that well before the sale,

your collection is brought to the attention of suitably specialised collectors and dealers

around the world. Because of their high-quality content and physical quality, our cata-

logues have long been used as reference works in private libraries across the globe.

We engage in a constant dialogue with the outside world, keeping the print and electronic

media regularly informed about what we’re up to, sending out carefully designed press

packs to inform the public about the wide range of services we provide, preparations for

our auctions, and the results they achieve.

They’re talking about us – Rapp auctions and the press

Year after year, our auctions have made headlines in philatelic publications, daily

newspapers, leading business and arts magazines and on radio and TV. As far as the

media are concerned, each one is a must-see event.

Over the decades since we began trading, we have worked closely with leading institutions

and organisations who have repeatedly entrusted us with individual stamps and collections

for auction, with outstanding success. The following are two examples of the many letters of

appreciation we have received: the first from the management of the Bürgerliches Waisenhaus

(municipal orphanage) in Basel (1977) and the second from Gavin Fryer, president of the Royal

In the auction business as everywhere else, success isn’t just handed to you on a plate: you have

For decades, again and again, our auctions have been paragons of success. They serve as benchmarks

for the world philately industry, with exquisite individual items, collections and rarities from all areas

reliably fetching the highest international prices. As a result, over the years we have been asked to

auction large numbers of very rare individual stamps, important collections, unusual bequests and large

investment collections, for which we have achieved impressive results.
