T his month

"y our missionaries

in

Italy " are very busy with writing to our radio

listene rs and taping the broadcasts and other h e a v y correspondence

and

witnessing

for the Lord and teaching God's Word and preparing for the rest of our

"split-

furlou^." We h av e mixed emo tions as we plan

to

return to our precious "Stati

Uniti". T h e first lesson

Ivia

learned

as a missionary-wife

is that with every

joyful

experience

there

is to some degree sadness, too.

What

a joy to know the love and concern for us and our marriage shown

by

"our

people" herel Yet what sadness to be separated from "our people"

in

the States-

you, other friends and brethren...and, of course, our children and grandchildren

our newest granddaughter is growing and we've never seen herl)*

What a joy to s e e th e folks

gladly run errands for

medicare,

food, etc., for

Ivia, w hil e Charles

was

briefly but seriously ill in December. What sadness

on

their

faces to see him

suffer

so. (Charles is

fine

now;

a

combination o f

flu

and

he avy Bronchitis finally requiring

oxygen

to pull him out of

it

in answer to

many

fervent

prayers.)

What

jo y

and excitement at the prospect of travel

to

see our friends and family

Stateside

But

what

sadness at

leaving

even for a while

our beloved

folks h e r e ,

and at

leaving our

home, too.

At th is

time we're working especially

to teach the

Word and

God's

plan

for

our

lives

to "our

G i n a . ,"

ho h elps

us part-time in the

hou se. She was

so kind to

"the Signora"

during Charles' illness. She is

41,

almost entirely deserted by her

family and

is

a

v er y insecure person.

She asked

how "Signor

Carlo" and "the Signora"

could

be so

happy even when ill.

As

we began to teach her

that

it's not our character she's

seeing in us, but

the

Lord

and

His Holy

Spirit,

sh e

wept and

said,

"Signor Carlo,

no on e ever taught me th e Scriptures

and

h o w

to

pray

w h e n

I really n e e d e d

to

pray."

We

ask

you to pray

especially

for Gina.

Altho'

she was raised a Roman

Catholic,

like most Italians,

she

knows al most

nothing

about it,

nothing

at all directly f rom

the

Bible and she's disillusioned

with

what

sh e

was taught is Christianity.

Please

pray

also that sh e find full-time

work;

she

needs

it very badly.

Again thank all

of you

who shared

cards,

gifts, love offerings, etc.,

with us

Christmas. Christmas Eve we all shared in an "Agape"

Since

rent

controls have been lifted

in

Italy, the full effect of inflation the re

is being felt

(25^ annually ). Rent has more than d o u b l e d o n our living quarters

and has already b e e n raised o n the Terracina

meeting

place

more

than a third.

All costs are up

more

than three times the

U.S.

rate of inflation. So our entire

work - radio ministry, cassette ministry, literature, supplies,

etc. -

costs tha t

much

more.

God's will is being

done

in

our work

in Italy and, through

the

radio, in many

other places, as

precious souls like Gina are won to the Lord. For their sake,

and

because

the

Saviour

loves them and sends

us to tell them

so,

we must not

fail

You,

dear

friends,

all know

that income must not

stop

while we

are

working

h e r e

in

the

States - working

at

the job of reporting to you,

our

life-lines.

a r r i v a l we

received the report from Patricia

Wilson,

our Forwarding

Secretary , that funds w er e dangerously low,

as

compared

with

what s

n e e d e d to continue the work

on

the

f i e l d

and

or

our expenses

as

we

r a v e l to report to y o u .

Our planned furlough was or eight months, i n order to f i n i s h

the

year

of "split-furlough" Charles started l a s t year.

Giuseppe said

in

his latest letter to tell all of you h e r e th e y ar e praying

for you there in Italy. We were saddened

by

the news of the death of Giuseppe's

father* Antonio. But

he

was a faithful Christian and we

know

that

his

faith

was

in the

Lord and that he trusted Him and

His

Word completely.

There has also

been a series of

unwelcome events in the

lives

of other of our

brethren* both

among

the missionaries

in Italy

at this time and

among

th e

Italian bre thren.

We

ask your prayers on behalf

of all

for th e sake

o f

th e

Lord's work in that difficult* but definitely rewarding*

field.

It has been a beautiful **report-tour" with the folks in th e churches

we

visited

in

the

Southwest. As always

we

were

received

with much love and concern for

our share of

the

Lord's work.

well as the ones

we've

yet to report to .

Dear Friends of Charles and Ivia,

As I

write th is letter

to

y ou, my

heart

is burdened for the

Phipps.

V

Late last night

I rec eived a

call

from

Ivia telling

me

that Charles

h a d

just

h a d a

heart attack

and was in the

hospital in Toledo, Ohio,

in the intensive

care unit.

In our

brief telephone conversation, she shared

with

me

that the doctors

feel

Charles

will

recover, but

he

will

h a v e

to

alter his life-style somewhat. It

is my

understanding

that

Charles will

be

in

the

hospital for

about

four

weeks and

then will n e e d

to

take

it

easy

for

a

while.

Charles is determined that this will not keep them from returning to Italy I know

his

love for God and

for the

people

of Italy

and I'm

confident that

it won't.

I don't

h a v e to

tell

y o u o f

the

many y ears of

service

Charles has given to God

in

Italy. I personally can

remember

back

w h e n

I

was a

b o y

being told

about

the work

that

Charles and Mary Frances were doing. As

I

visited with Charles just a

f e w

days ago

in

my

own home,

with

tears in

his

eyes, he

sh are d

with me

some o f his

experiences over the

last

thirty-five years.

I

praise God for Charles and for his willingness to be used by God.

This is why I elt led to

write

and

share

this

news with

y ou, and to ask you to join me

in

meeting

a

n e ed

that

Charles

and

Ivia h ave

today.

T h e r e

are going to be

additional e xpenses

from the

ho spital stay, plus

the fact

that with Ch arles being ill, he 's not going to be able to keep many o f the appointments

he has sch edu led for

th e rest

of this y ear. In these appointments and speaking engage

ments Charles was arranging the necessary

funds

that

he

and Ivia need

in

order to

continue

the

work

in

Italy.

I

know

much

o f

his

time

was set aside for preparing

for his

return to

the

mission

field the,first

of

the year.

Besides the

immediate

n e e d to pay hospital bills

and

living expenses, the Phipps

,need additional monthly support for

their

work in Italy.

As

forwarding

agent, I

have the

opportunity of

seeing

the funds come

in/

and I know that

over the

past several

years

Charles and his family have lived on

only

about $450 a month. Th is is not enough

to

meet

his

needs

even here

in

the

States,

let

alone

in

Italy where

it

is

much

more

expensiv

to live.

Ne cessities such^as food and

gasoline cost about

three times as

much in

Italy

as th e y

do h ere. " '

pressure

you for

funds,

I

simply lo v e this

man

of God

and

has

a

need.

you who

have been his friends

there are One. Is the immediate

need

for funds

to he lp

cover the hospital bills

and

living expenses. Th e second is the additional

monthly

support that the

Phipps need to

keep them in Italy.

these needs and seek what the Holy Spirit
