In 1864, hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bold wager with some of his English summer guests: he promised them that if they came back in the winter, they would still be able to enjoy the mild Engadin sunshine on his terrace in their shirtsleeves. If not, he would pay their travel costs. The guests came back at Christmas – and returned home at Easter, tanned, relaxed and happy. And so, 150 years ago, winter tourism was born in St Moritz. However, the village had been welcoming guests long before that. The rich and beautiful from all over Europe flocked to St Moritz in the summer to visit the iron-rich mineral springs, which were discovered in St Moritz over 3,000 years ago. The scintillating Alpine resort has written history in other ways too. On 5th December, the spectacular City Race will take place featuring thrilling ski cross and cross-country ski races, the air filled with a live concert atmosphere.

Between Christmas and New Year, the Engadin is steeped in a festive ambience, not just because of its enchanting snowy-white landscape, but because of the magical concerts performed by the Engadin Symphony Orchestra.

The 58th Concours Hippique St Moritz, happening between 10th and 17th January 2016, is a show-jumping event which enjoys a long-standing tradition in St Moritz, where spectators are unusually close to the horses and their riders.

The Olympia Bob Run in St Moritz-Celerina is the last surviving natural-ice run in the world and is made entirely out of snow and water. Not only its construction, but also its history, is unique. More than thirty-five World Championships, as well as two Winter Olympics (1928 and 1948), have been held on this bob run. 11th January 2016 – 28th February 2016. The thirteenth Winter Raid from 13th to 16th January 2016 is a vintage car rally of a very special kind: St Moritz - Cortina d´Ampezzo - St Moritz mountain roads and passes - all at greatly varying altitudes and in the very depths of winter. The winner of this challenging rally is awarded the White Star of St Moritz.

St Moritz GourMet FeStival

From 25th to 29th January 2015 the Upper Engadin will be transformed into a paradise for gourmet fans. During this week, Japanese master chefs will surprise with exceptional and pleasurable experiences, alongside the local master chefs of the partner hotels. Unexpected Far Eastern culinary delights for all the senses in an incomparable festival culture await epicures at an altitude of 1,800 metres. The Grand Opening at the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains will be an enjoyable start, followed

by the individual Gourmet Dîners and the Gourmet Safaris, the legendary Kitchen Party at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, as well as further special events and tastings. The crowning event of this festival week will be the Great BMW Gourmet Finale, taking place with all the master chefs at the Kulm Hotel St Moritz.

St Moritz is the birth place of Snow Polo. In 1985, the very first tournament was played here and still today the Snow Polo World Cup St Moritz is the world´s most important Snow Polo tournament. Four ‘High Goal’ teams of world class players offer a unique spectacle on the frozen lake of St Moritz. Culinary delights for all tastes, entertainment and

Go SkiinG – at niGHt!

Corvatsch Snow Night: in winter you can go skiing every Friday night until 2am on Switzerland’s longest illuminated ski run (4.2

kilometres). Once their boots are off, skiers put on their party shoes and head to the dance floor at the legendary Hossa Bar.

wHite turF St Moritz

The annual White Turf event, a tradition dating back to 1907, is no longer merely a horse racing meeting. It stands for thundering horses hooves on spraying snow, thrilling flat and trotting races, complete with betting offices. Courageous men and intrepid women on skis pulled along at high speed by unmounted horses at the only skijoring race in the world. A veritable feast for all the senses and a social highlight of the season.

The Engadin walnut tart is the ultimate guilty pleasure. Generations of local confectioners have continued to refine this signature dish with rich cream, caramel and chunky walnuts. The result is Engadin ‘tuorta da nusch engiadinaisa’, and a baking tradition that international visitors have carried back to all corners of the globe. Gunter Sachs opened the world famous Dracula Club in the 1970s. In his heyday, Sachs was one of the European jet set’s most colourful characters. The doors of this private club only open for members and their friends and, in summer, for those attending the Festival da Jazz.

The St Moritz-Celerina Olympic bob run is the only natural ice bobsleigh track in the world. Bobsleigh taxi rides are offered daily following training sessions and races. The 1,722-metre-long track only takes around seventy-five seconds to complete. At the Horseshoe corner you’ll experience a g-force of up to 4.5 G and before the Martineau corner you’ll reach a top speed as high as 135 kilometres per hour.

Over the past few years, St Moritz’s local mountain Corviglia has become a veritable mountain bike paradise. This transformation owes much to its new flow trails and ‘mountain bike rollercoaster’ with banked curves, corrugations and jumps. The Corviglia flow trail is the most famous and is also suitable for less experienced riders. But be warned: the breathtaking panoramic views might distract you!

11th December finds the Carlton Hotel ushering in the winter season. Amongst the forthcoming culinary high points are the hotel’s participation in the 2016 St Moritz Gourmet Festival with executive chef Gero Porstein

and Guest Chef Hiroki Yoshitake. Together with the exclusive van Cleef & Arpels exhibition and vIP packages for the Snow Polo World Cup and White Turf events,

any number of highlights have been lined up!

The 2016 St Moritz Gourmet Festival is taking place between 25 and 29 January under the motto “Yokoso Nippon” (which translates as Welcome Japan). This

series of events was launched in 1994, and this year’s edition spotlights star chefs from the Land of the Rising Sun. For its duration, the Carlton’s Executive Chef,

Gero Porstein, will be joined by 35-year-old Hiroki Yoshitake, who takes his culinary inspiration from the season and serves his dishes in the form

of miniature scenic works of art – on crockery specially fashioned for the purpose. Diners participating in the festival’s traditional

gourmet safari, which is held over three evenings, will be savouring a stunning dessert at the Carlton, while

at the same time gaining exclusive insights into the hotel’s kitchen.

Premium quality jewellery will be on display between 20th December 2015 and 8th January 2016 at the van Cleef & Arpels exhibition being

held in the Empire Ballroom of the Carlton Hotel. Staff from the French jeweller will be in attendance, presenting exclusive gemstones worked

into items of jewellery. The prestigious Snow Polo World Cup in St Moritz, meanwhile, is where the top proponents of the sport meet the great and the

good from the worlds of culture, business and politics. This season’s must-attend society and sporting event takes place between 29 and 31 January 2016. The Carlton Hotel’s privileged position offers unsurpassable views of the action on the frozen lake. The hotel is one of the event’s official hospitality sponsor

and is offering its guests a vIP package: Polo Gold. Another spectacle not to be missed is the White Turf horse racing event, which takes place

SSet on a hill above the centre of Gstaad in the Oberbort district, the Gstaad Palace has a privileged location offering breath-taking views of the beautiful Saanenland.

The movers and shakers of the international film industry soon discovered the tranquillity of Gstaad for themselves. Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor found peace and quiet at Chalet Ariel, which her fourth husband Eddie Fisher bought for her in 1959. Richard Burton played yahtzee and drank Beaujolais with her in the Hotel Olden – now owned by Bernie Ecclestone. Her daughter also made a bronze sculpture of a calf on the village square in Gstaad.

Gstaad sets great store by its discreet feeling, despite its high density of celebrities. Instead of sensationalism, real friendships have grown between the famous visitors and locals.

WHEN I RECEIvED AN INvITATION FROM ROLLS-ROYCE FOR A SCENIC DRIvE BETWEEN ABU DHABI AND THE QASR AL SARAB RESORT IN THE LEGENDARY RUB AL KHALI, IN THE LIWA OASIS, I WAS WONDERING HOW SUCH A LUxURIOUS CAR WOULD MATCH THE DESERT ROADS, WRITES KARINE LACKNER

It is every inch a refined and luxurious Rolls-Royce, a car where the sense of arrival and joy of the journey are important, so as I started my driving experience together with a group of other Rolls-Royce Wraiths and Ghost Series II, the phrase ‘sit back and relax’ came to mind.

While driving, multiple inputs from sensors in and around the car are constantly processed by a complex computer system. Individual load calculations are made by the dampers every two-and-a-half seconds. The benefits are outstanding comfort and assurance for the driver. I’ve never felt safer in a car.

In addition, composure on virtually any surface is assured thanks to a series of electronic driver assistance systems, including anti-roll stabilisation, dynamic stability control including dynamic traction control, cornering brake control and dynamic brake control.

Finding a destination no longer requires manual input from the navigation menu. The driver with a lunch date at the Ritz Carlton in London would merely command Wraith to ‘navigate to Piccadilly in London’. A one-touch call button located on the steering wheel allows navigation, telephone and other commands to be directed straight into Wraith’s on-board computer. The car’s response is then displayed on a 10.25” high definition screen located on the dashboard. Having the perfect guide to lead the majestically moving group of Rolls-Royces, there was no need to use this feature on my desert journey.

Green, yellow, orange and red are used to illustrate traffic flow on chosen roads. When twenty or more minutes are likely to be added to any given journey, an alternative route is plotted, which can be more than useful when driving in a busy city such as Dubai, Doha, Paris or London. In such circumstances the driver may wish to call their companion to advise of a delay. Wraith makes this as effortless as possible with the same one touch system. A command of ‘call’ followed by the name of the person you wish to speak to automatically connects the call. At the end of the conversation, a command such as ‘play BBC Radio 4’ will return the driver directly to the in-car entertainment options (when driving in the UK obviously!).

Desert Journey

Liwa is a huge belt of oases along the northern reaches of the dune fields of Rub Al Khali, the largest uninterrupted body of sand in the world, and known as the ‘Empty Quarter’. It stretches about a hundred kilometres east-west and consists of some fifty villages. This romantic setting was the birth place of the tribe of Bani Yas to whom the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi, Al Nahyan, belongs, as well as the Al Maktoum family, the rulers of Dubai.

I would be stepping into the Rolls-Royce Wraith, powerful but never brutal, a cultivated strength which perfectly complements the dynamism of its exterior styling. The sand dunes surely should be a strong contrast to the automotive masterpiece!

Naturally, the starting point of any Rolls-Royce is luxury, refinement and exclusivity, traits that have made it the world’s pinnacle luxury brand for more than a hundred years.

In its design, the Rolls-Royce Wraith presents a masterpiece of elegant simplicity, exuding poise and the promise of dynamism. There is a sense that this car is ready to move on its driver command and as I took my seat I rather had the feeling the car would be calling the shots, not me!

In 2015, the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine celebrated its 104th birthday. More than any other symbol of luxury, the flying lady stands as a genuine icon, one whose beautiful image continues to adorn the grille, but is now also reproduced within Wraith’s cabin, gently rotating on-screen when the engine is started.

Our journey went smoothly to the Qasr Al Sarab Resort, where after an ‘exhausting’ drive (I could have driven for the rest of the evening, night and next day, so comfortable was this experience), Anantara pampered us with a choice of a signature massage, Thai massage or Arabian exotic scrub before a dinner under the stars in the stillness of the desert in a set-up echoing Bedouin tradition.

I must come back and explore this magical resort – and try Anantara’s wonderful spa menu – which I never would have discovered were it not for a journey in a Rolls-Royce Wraith that will live long in my memory.

NNo technical avenue has been left unexplored by Rolls-Royce to ensure occupant safety. The Advanced Crash Management (ACSM) system utilises sensors placed around the car to make 2,000 measurements per second. Wraith also incorporates a selection of technologies designed to improve illumination at night, protecting occupants and improving safety for other road users. Night vision technology now includes warning messages, as well as automatic brake preparation to support evasive action should an accident be imminent.

Pedestrians and animals such as cattle and deer are shown, and where a hazard is identified, they are accompanied by a yellow triangular warning symbol on-screen and via the head-up display function. When driving in the dark, a camera monitors the road ahead, automatically dipping the headlights when a light-source is present; once it passes, lights will return to full beam.

Our driving time was carefully chosen so we could admire the sunset and sensational colours the sand dunes have at that time of day. At night in the desert, the only light source comes from the sky itself, so not the ideal conditions to test this technology!

The iBrake 6 function uses information from the radar sensor and front camera to help the driver stop quickly and with maximum efficiency should an emergency situation arise. Abundant power comes thanks to Wraith’s v12 twin-turbo engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. But Satellite Aided Transmission technology takes this to a new level of effortless delivery, one that perfectly suits the Rolls-Royce brand.

Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to see beyond what the driver sees; it anticipates your next move based on location and current driving style, then selects the most appropriate gear for the terrain ahead. Corner, motorway junctions and roundabouts are all anticipated in advance, meaning Wraith is constantly poised to deliver on its promise of performance.

Consider piloting Wraith in its natural environment, through the twisting roads of an Alpine pass. While negotiating a hairpin, approaching an inviting series of bends, the car knows its location; it sees what you are seeing, but importantly also anticipates what is to come.

The resort’s 10,000-square-feet spa uses the healing and cleansing powers of water. Treatments feature water in combination with salt and crystals to restore negative ions, bringing balance to emotions and energy levels. My treatment, Ocean Embrace, indulged me in 120 minutes of total relaxation and a new me was ready for sunset cocktails at Sundara, the resort’s beachfront restaurant, whose name is Sanskrit for ‘beautiful’ and pays tribute to the glowing sun that warms this Indian Ocean hotspot and highly social meeting place.

Bali is a fascinating destination for travellers who want to combine a beach holiday on one of the world’s most intriguing islands with the opportunity to explore a culture very different from their own. Combining both Four Seasons Resorts in Bali in one trip can assure you get the best out of it!

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay should be your first stop for a beach vacation in absolute tranquillity with culinary highlights starting in the morning at the vast breakfast buffet at the Taman Wantilan restaurant or in the privacy of your villa.

It is located on the southern tip of the island of Bali, on the north-east slopes of the Bukit Peninsula on a gently terraced hillside named Bukit Permai, meaning ‘beautiful hill’. Thirty-five acres of superbly landscaped tropical gardens gracefully descend onto a wide expanse of white sandy beach.

IiSland oF FlavourS

The Balinese Cooking School at Four Seasons Jimbaran, a favourite stop for novice and experienced chefs, offers a course on Balinese cuisine. It begins with a trip to a local market, where students shop for ingredients. Back at the resort, Four Seasons chefs expertly demonstrate how to make some of the island’s most delicious dishes, including satay lilit ayam (chicken satay), acar sayur (pickled vegetables) and pepes ikan kakap (grilled snapper wrapped in banana leaf).

A steaming cup of Balinese coffee and a traditional Indonesian breakfast at Taman Wantilan at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay was my favourite way to start the day. Local breakfast options include Balinese-style fried rice and bubur ayam, a Balinese rice porridge served with shredded chicken, roasted coconut, wild ginger and lemon grass.

For sunset cocktails with a view of Jimbaran Bay, the Four Seasons Resort’s Sundara restaurant is hard to beat. It’ll take many meals here to work your way through the menu’s offerings. Try something from the small plates menu, which includes sate, bakso and salt and pepper squid. For dinner, the steak is superb, as are local seafood options, each brushed with bumbu spice paste.

Another location specialising in small plates is Cuca, which serves up tapas. The roasted tiger prawns and barbecued octopus, each prepared with local ingredients, are tremendously good. This restaurant is also revered for its desserts (slow-baked caramel apples with Javanese black pepper ice cream are a wonder) and signature cocktails, which I recommend sipping in the coconut-tree-framed garden lounge.

Traditional Indonesian fare is also on the menu at local favourite Bumbu Bali. Named after the blend of spices customary in Balinese cuisine, this spot goes the extra mile to deliver the most authentic dining experience possible. Chefs spend hours each day perusing local markets to ensure that each dish – from skewered sate to refreshing papaya salad – is at its freshest. And since eating out is not a social custom in Bali, the atmosphere here has been carefully crafted to evoke the feeling of dining in a traditional village home.

After a few days and at your own pace, move on to the Four Seasons Resort at Sayan in Ubud. You will enjoy the lush beauty of flowers and abundant nature at both resorts, but a different feel awaits in the extraordinary Balinese-inspired pool villas at each location. What I personally loved at Four Seasons Resort Jimbaran, among so many others, was the old Balinese wooden door leading to my lush little garden in front of the villa with its pool and outdoor dining which gave me the feeling of coming home.

TThe Four Seasons Resort at Sayan, lies thirty-five kilometres (twenty-two miles) north-north-east of Ngurah Rai International Airport on eighteen acres of lush, green terraced rice slopes. The resort overlooks the Ayung River which flows through the central highlands of Bali. On my arrival, I first crossed a dramatic gorge via a solid teak bridge, leading to an elliptical lotus pond. It rests on the roof of the resort’s three-level central building and offers a panoramic view of the valley. I was even more amazed when driven by buggy to my one-bedroom pool villa; I entered from the rooftop, which has lotus gardens and a wooden deck. Descending through a circular stone staircase to the lower level, the most elegant yet authentic Balinese set-up with a large wooden deck and twelve-square-metre plunge pool in absolute privacy lay before me.

TTaking a walk around the property later, I discovered that all the sixty beautifully appointed suites, one-bedroom and two-bedroom private villas plus the Royal villa are discretely placed in the landscape and a countryside feeling arose in me, one entirely different to the pastoral sensations experienced in Europe. I passed Balinese gardeners taking care of the immaculate fields and strolled down paths with magnificent flowers to discover the astonishing Yoga Bale in the middle of a rice field before I met my therapist at the Sacred River Spa for a treatment to restore and balance the subtle inner energies, uniting body, mind and spirit.

Extending from the top of the verdant hillside down to the river’s edge, the Ayung Terrace restaurant is elegantly situated atop the slope of the lush gorge with breathtaking views of the swift-flowing river below in the daytime. As night falls, it is a romantic dinner location with flickering lights in the near hills, with the river gushing nearby and the wood-burning oven crackling. The healthy, western fare complements the stunning surroundings.

iSland oF Culture

Treasured for its lush landscapes and relaxed pace, Bali is also famous for its artistic traditions including dance, sculpture, wood carving, handcrafts and music. Local history is punctuated by breathtaking vistas at the Uluwatu Temple, where the inner sanctum balances on the edge of a steep cliff.

Making offerings is central to life in Bali. Typically consisting of a flower, a few grains of rice, something to drink and burning incense, the offerings are placed in a small basket known as a canang sari, which has been hand woven or folded from palm leaves.

Time your visit to Uluwatu so that you’re there for the traditional Balinese dance ceremony that takes place at the temple each night around sunset. Kecak (pronounced ‘ke-chak’) is a fire dance that was originally performed by Balinese men as a trance ritual. During the performance, men sit in concentric circles and chant as the Ramayana is danced. It’s a spectacular scene that ends with an even more powerful fire display.

Tenganan village, nestled among hills on the eastern edge of the island, remains true to the historic roots of the Bali Aga, the original Balinese people. Traditional houses line a central street, where you’re more likely to encounter a rooster or cow than a car or motorbike, which are outlawed in the village.

The duku is found growing in

tightly packed clusters. Each small round fruit is covered

by yellowish, leathery skin that is mottled with brown specks. Beneath

the skin are five or six segments of transluscent, juicy flesh which is

slightly acidic in taste. The sweet-sour flavour is comparable to a grape or the ‘perfect’ grapefuit with no

where the tart raw fruit is served with a sweet and spicy sauce.Season is november.

of different varieties found in Bali, ranging from

the ‘pisang susu’ that is very small in size to the ‘pisang

gading’ whose skin remains green even when the

fruit is ripe.

Deriving its name from the Malay word ‘rambut’ meaning hair, which reflects the fruit’s unusual

hairy appearance, the bright red shell is easily removed with the fingers to reveal the sweet translucent white

flesh, which is comparable to lychee.

When I arrived at the Ritz-Carlton, the most stunning scenery unfolded in front of my eyes. Usually hotels and resorts are not on top of a mountain or cliff and stretch down to the sea. It’s either or. No picture can describe this view and I encourage you to experience it yourself.

A seventy-metre high glass elevator takes me to the ground level, which is the way to reach the lush gardens with multiple pools. The pool pavilion villas all have their pool right in front of the living room terrace, so you can plunge in straight from your outdoor daybed. From my villa I could even walk through the pool with water only to my ankles to reach the cabana in front of the pool which is private to each and every pool pavilion villa prepared with cushions to chill out.

Another great feature is the extensive bathroom. As it is tradition in Bali, it is half outside, half inside, and also offers two showers and a bathtub that are just as amazing as the rest of the villa. All these and the most wonderful amenities of the new generation of five-star resorts are at your disposal; the turndown housekeeping team even leaves a little card for tomorrow’s weather next to your bed!

The Ritz-Carlton has a wide choice of villa types which range from 241 square metres to 677 square metres with panoramic garden and ocean views, either on a cliff top location or with direct access to the beach. The resort just recently opened in February 2015 and expands on 12.7 hectares on beautifully manicured beachfront land on Nusa Dua’s southern tip of Bali.

I arrived in the early afternoon after a two-hour drive down from Ubud; he arranged a specially set-up late lunch table right outside the Beach Grill restaurant facing the beach and ocean. Breathing the fresh sea air, sipping my delicious Maracuja drink and enjoying real Italian Mozzarella di Buffala, I couldn’t have been more relaxed in the laid-back atmosphere after the visit to Ubud’s busy centre. I watched camels walking along the beach, ready and keen to explore the multiple evening outlets the Ritz-Carlton, Bali has to offer (me, that is, not the camels!).

As a beach fan my first choice would always be a great beachfront restaurant. Tapas at the Breezes Tapas Lounge, open for lunch and dinner, is the perfect place to feel refreshed on a sultry afternoon or to soak up one of the island’s famous sunsets over a sophisticated tropical cocktail. The talented chef recommended the Gambas Al Ajillo, freshly caught prawns prepared with bright parsley and just the right amount of garlic. The relaxing waves of the Indian Ocean, the gentle sea breeze and the colours of the sunset are the perfect combination for laid-back casual dining at one of the beachfront cabanas. Chill-out at its best!

TThe estate is a a fifteen-minute drive from Ubud, occupying jungle-covered gardens above the Ayung River, a true ‘Retreat for Change’ with resident experts, yoga teacher, Ayurvedic doctor and dietician. The holistic, 360-degree approach offers not only signature massage therapies and beauty treatments, but nutritionally balanced cuisine as well.

I stayed in a lovely Suite with private terrace and fishpond overlooking the ricefields. Like the Garden Rooms, each Terrace Suite occupies one of the four- and five-suite Residences with a shared pool, lounge and dining areas. For the ultimate comfort and a larger family I can highly suggest the supremely comfortable COMO Shambhala Suites with the principal master suite in each of the Residences with its own clutch of Indonesian antiques and a private Jacuzzi. By the way, all bathrooms are outdoors (but don’t worry, they are covered!).

COMO Shambhala has an extensive schedule of activities, so you can decide at your pace which one is the right one for you. From estate walks through lush nature down to the river to a rice field trek, from aqua therapy in the holy water pool to restorative yoga or jungle gym circuit training to Qigong all is offered to connect you with your inner power of self healing. I knew little about the Conrad Hong Kong, except its location at the heart of the city’s business district. I was delighted to discover its fusion of traditional Chinese culture with modern Chinese design. I loved the panoramic views of the victoria Harbour and the victoria Peak and the amazing choice of several of the city’s leading restaurants including the Michelin-starred Golden Leaf, the beloved name in Chinese dining. For fans of Cantonese cuisine, like me, with a passion for detail this made the choice of the place to stay an easy one, after struggling to decide between the many legendary hotels Hong Kong boasts.

I could not have chosen a better date for arriving than 14th September, on which Conrad Hong Kong celebrated its 25th anniversary, having officially opened its doors to its first guests in 1990.

Conrad Hong Kong’s Mercedes limousine was awaiting me with three dedicated people to greet, guide and drive me. The amazingly beautiful Conrad Red limousine has Wifi and an iPad where you can choose from the pillow menu and select you favourite amenities to personalise your stay shortly before your arrival at the hotel. You can view other Conrad properties for your next trip and get some inspiration for many more of your travels. The way to the hotel was a smooth forty-minute ride I certainly enjoyed in my adjustable, comfortable seat with wide leg room and candy, water and a great music programme at my fingertips.

For someone especially lucky (like me), a corner suite (on the 52nd floor) offers you both views, the harbour from the elegant living room and the green mountains from the bedroom through panoramic windows that give you goose bumps and feelings of awe every time you walk from one room to the other.

The delicate pastel colours of the elegant interior design feature some Chinese elements. The Tv and sound system are discreetly housed in a cupboard, which creates a totally cosy feeling. I felt instantly at home. The corridors and elevator waiting areas are truly elegant too and wherever you go, you feel a grandeur that has been present in palaces for decades, when contemporary design was still the rare creations of Le Corbusier or Eileen Gray.

اأما المطعم الكانتوني جولدن ليف الحائز على جائزة مي�سالن فهو مده�ض. وجربت على قادرة اأكن لم ولكني لدي، المف�سل هو طبق اأي و�سئلت اللذيذة الأطباق كل الجابة مبا�سرة. فحليمات التذوق عندي اكت�سفت كما هائال من النكهات في ع�ساء

لمدة ثالث �ساعات موؤلف من �سبعة اأطباق.

The festive ambiance I felt was abundant when I entered the beautiful lobby. But what I learned the next day at the dinner hosted by the general manager Mr Thomas was that most of all, Conrad Hong Kong was keen to celebrate the anniversary with its loyal employees.

My check-in was done directly in the suite and I was told that guests staying during this period are gifted a special edition of the famous Conrad Bear (my daughter loved it when I brought it home) and the Conrad Duck’s special edition in a silver colour to mark the 25th, or silver, anniversary.

The grand celebration programme, which started days before the actual anniversary, was extended to the dining outlets with the appearance of culinary luminaries such as Curtis Duffy. Based in Chicago, Duffy’s restaurant, Grace, received the highest accolade in the latest Michelin Guide. He is known for a combination of top-notch ingredients and exquisite presentation that earned him the three revered stars.Staying in one of the Conrad Hong Kong’s 467 deluxe rooms or forty-four suites is a treat in itself. Guests can choose from the view to victoria Peak which becomes especially delightful in the morning with abundant green scenery in front of your window or, if you prefer, the harbour view offering glittering scenery in the evening. In the daytime you can observe boats passing by and dream of the ancient times when Hong Kong was the centre of trade between east and west.

But there is a modern and hip side to the Conrad Hong Kong too. The Garden Café is the place to chill out. There, just above the pool, you will indulge in the most amazing lounge atmosphere, be able to try the barbecue, a fantastic variety of drinks and listen to great music. This place is even perfect in the colder months between November and February, when cosy blankets and electric heaters will be standing by to warm you up while you take in the fresh breeze.

Should you plan to visit Hong Kong before the end of 2015, the Silver Jubilee package elevates the indulgence to another level. This includes hearty breakfast served every day, a spread of fresh seafood and international delicacies at the famed buffet of the Garden Café and the luscious silver jubilee cake, pastry chef Billy Yuen’s creative take on a Conrad classic.

Purchase various commemorative food items and drinks, including the most delicious anniversary cake, a limited edition twenty-five-year-old balsamic vinegar from Nicholini’s, the great Italian restaurant of the Conrad Hong Kong, and Chinese tea from Golden Leaf that has been aged for twenty-five years.

The Michelin-starred Golden Leaf is truly one of the most amazing Cantonese restaurants. I had to try all of the delicacies, and asked which one was my favourite, I wasn’t able to respond right away. My taste buds discovered so much over a three-hour dinner of seven courses.

Given the fast pace of living in a metropolitan city like Hong Kong, visitors and nine-to-sixers are always looking for a perfect work-life balance and a great spot to unwind and stay in. CROWNING THE RITZ-CARLTON HONG KONG HOTEL, THE COCKTAIL BAR IS ON THE 103RD FLOOR OF THE 118-STOREY ICC TOWER AND, AT 1,608FT ABOvE SEA LEvEL IS THE HIGHEST BAR IN THE WORLD.

It’s only when Sylvia Lee invited me to the terrace, where our table was reserved in the vIP corner, that I can fully admire the vista. This astonishing and captivating view doesn’t leave you only speechless, but also makes your head turn every two minutes to explore more of the thousands and thousands of houses under you. From here, you can see one of the world’s most spectacular skylines in its entirety. It’s a pulsating blaze of neon during each night’s 8pm Symphony of Lights, a synchronised light and sound display, but remains beautiful at any hour. The skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island shimmer on the other side of the harbour, where Star Ferry services, minuscule from this height, trundle back and forth throughout the evening. I am served tapas and delicious cocktails and I can say I am very close to heaven!

It takes about a minute to ascend by lift from ground level to Ozone. Designed by Japan’s Masamichi Katayama, the main bar area is futuristic in looks and club-like in feel. Illuminated by obscured strips of neon, awash with marble and with a honeycomb pattern stretching across floor and ceiling.

This may be one of the world’s most congested cities but much of greater Hong Kong is protected parkland and from this vantage point you can see teetering high-rises and traffic-clogged highways give way to mountains densely coated in untouched forest.

Other corners of the Ritz-Carlton are almost as impressive as Ozone. Standards are exemplary both at two-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant Tin Lung Heen and one-star Italian restaurant Tosca; for those with access, the hotel’s executive lounge is one of the best in the city; the 312 rooms and suites, stylishly finished in charcoal and plum, are spacious and very elegant in every detail plus you get spectacular city and harbour views. Try to get a corner suite and you will experience in privacy what others can only experience at Ozone – a million dollar view onto buzzling Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has evolved rapidly to become an ultra-urban city and has lost its traditional communities to modernisation. Most visitors to Hong Kong don’t know that in the old days there was a thriving community living on boats.

STep BACk In TIMe

A visit to the 1881 Heritage takes you on a journey to the victorian era. In the colonial days the main building was the headquarters of the Hong Kong Marine Police and was home to a typhoon mast that was manually hoisted to warn of the impending storms. Today, this Tsim Sha Tsui landmark offers luxury retail and fine dining.

The Aberdeen Fishing Village is testament to that and is fast disappearing. Take the ngong Ping 360 cable car for a scenic journey to visit one of Hong Kong’s most popular attractions, Big Buddha. Located beside the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, it is the largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha in the world. The statue is set amid mountains and hiking trails, and most impressive when viewed from the cable car.

I also suggest visiting Tai O fishing village and taking a boat trip along the canals. It would be wishful thinking to describe it as a venice of the East but there’s no doubting the charm of its maze of stilt houses built over a creek on the north-western coast of Lantau Island.

The town of Stanley is a must-visit attraction boasting a panoramic view of the South China Sea, featuring the victorian-era Murray House and a local market with unique accessories and great food open from 10.30am to 6.30pm daily.

Have you bought your fair share of chrysanthemum and oolong tea? Drinking from a usual mug just not classy enough? Indulge in the full oriental experience with a delicate tea set you’ve scavenged from the antiques shops at Hollywood road.

Victoria Peak, which is the highest point on Hong Kong Island, offers the greatest view of it. The best way to go up is the Peak Tram. Just play the tourist for a moment; it is worth it and as you pass the buildings, it’s a funny sight to see them almost looking like they are leaning. If you dislike crowds, be aware of the tourist attraction of the Sky Terrace 428 viewing platform, but the view can be appreciated and best documented when you take one of those little recorders, hang them around your neck and listen to the most interesting facts regarding the buildings at your feet. A very practical and informative guide!

If you are keen to experience cultural attractions, some of the best recommended are only available in certain seasons, such as the Fire Dragon Parade in Tai Hang, which takes place during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Man Mo Temple and chinese opera in Sunbeam Theatre and the Wong Tai Sin temple are fascinating places to visit. The Taoist temple has answered many locals’ prayers, and visitors can also get a taste of what Chinese fortune telling is like at the stalls there. Come and feel the scent of incense swirl around you.

Blue House, which is a four-storey balcony-type tenement block located at Wan Chai is a Grade I-listed building in Hong Kong, built in the 1920s. It used to be a residential building but since 2010 it has become a Livelihood Museum, with exhibits that illustrate what life in the community was and is like.

With all that culture, amazing views and things to do where can I take the best picture of Hong Kong, you may ask yourself. Give it a shot along the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade in front of the Cultural Centre or from the Sky100 viewing deck on the 100th floor of the ICC skyscraper where the Ritz Carlton Hong Kong is located. The award-winning 118-storey International Commerce Centre is the city’s tallest building, standing at 484 metres high. My tip: ozone, the bar on the 103rd floor. It boasts the perfect combination of breathtaking views and delicious mocktails or cocktails!

The FenG-ShuI FAuX pAS

I am sure you have heard about feng-shui and good and bad energy. Many people visit a feng-shui master who can advise on how to deflect negative energy from your life. But when world-renowned Chinese-American architect IM Pei built the architectural masterpiece that is the Bank of china Tower in central, the building stood out with its triangular motif and sharp edges – all of which are supposed to be a no-no in terms of feng-shui. The two poles sticking out on the top of the building ‘stab’ at their neighbours, draining them of their resources and energy.

For something more down to earth, take a Lion Dance class. It is a form of traditional dance which is performed on many occasions from festivals to celebrating the opening of a new business. Your friends back home will be amazed next time you surprise them with your newly learned moves!

For kids and adults ocean Park is a way to get close to sharks, dolphins and giant pandas. It manages to amuse and educate with its marine and bird life exhibits and wild headland rides.Happy Valley racecourse gives you the chance to mingle with the masses in the stands or opt for the more refined atmosphere in the boxes. Expect a few adrenaline-fuelled hours among screaming hordes of horse racing fans.

Looking for the best tailor in Hong kong? Ascot Chang, Jimmy Chen and Fit Well are all great and recommended by the best concierges in town.

With all that Hong Kong has to offer I am quite sure you will make a return trip to this history-laden cosmopolitan and fashionable city where you can dine at Michelin-starred Chinese restaurants and even learn how to make dim sum from a professional chef. More than a dozen shopping malls will take some time to explore too!

For nearly forty years, the P e n i n s u l a Manila has set the benchmark for luxury and sophistication, known affectionately as the ‘Jewel in the Capital’s Crown’ for its legendary presence in the heart of Makati City.

In my friends’ company, I’ve had the pleasure of tea in the world famous lobby with its impressive gleaming 1,108 square-metre marble floor, and had drinks in the Salon de Ning on different occasions in the many years I have been passing through Manila. So I decided on my last trip to the Philippines to indulge in a full five-star experience.

Anyone who arrives at the Peninsula Manila for the first time will be astonished by its grandeur and elegance. The Lobby’s focal point is the glorious twelve-metre ‘Sunburst’, created by Philippine National Artist Napoleon Abueva. His masterpiece with twenty-one rays and thirty-three spears crafted from copper, bronze and stainless steel is the centrepiece of the lobby’s high ceiling.

Two large tapestries feature iconic natural wonders of the Philippines, the Mayon volcano – the world’s most perfectly formed coned volcano – and Sierra Madre – the longest continuous mountain range in the country. The approach used to create the tapestry is called arraiolos, a centuries-old Portuguese technique. Two of the most photographed staircases in the country are the sweeping marble steps of the Lobby.

s I arrived in the month of October, the Peninsula Manila’s theme was ‘the Art of Pink’, and an exhibition of artworks by acclaimed Filipino

artists, plus select pieces from some of the finest contemporary Filipino

galleries, was hosted. All the pieces were auctioned by Christie’s, with the proceeds donated to

the Philippine Foundation for Breast Care, as it is now the tradition in the month of October to raise awareness of breast cancer.

The hotel façade was artfully illuminated in pink and all of their amazing flower arrangements took on a rose hue. I couldn’t resist asking my new friend, the astonishing general manager Mrs Sonja to pose in front of these wonderful creations with me. Artistic pink pastries and desserts embellished the legendary Peninsula afternoon tea.

IT IS NOW THE TRADITION IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER TO RAISE AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER

he Peninsula Manila serves more than 600,000 guests each year in its restaurants,

from classics in the Lobby, international buffet selections at Escolta (one of the most amazing breakfast buffets I have seen), Asian-inspired delights at Spices (read the menu below), to

traditional French fine dining with modern international favourites at Old Manila (a trés chic spot).

Spoiled for choice, my culinary journey began at Spices with a variety of Asian dishes. Fresh rice paper summer rolls with shrimp and coriander, fried shrimp cakes with plum sauce, crispy catfish salad with green mango, lime and shallots accompanied by butter naan. Each more delicious than the other!

My host, Mariano, the Peninsula’s director of public relations for more than a decade, could tell stories that would fill more than an evening. He escorted me to Old Manila, where the French chef had prepared USDA beef tenderloin, king prawn, truffle mashed potato with béarnaise sauce and green pepper sauce. The black and white

themed restaurant has a different vibe from the rest of the hotel, almost a Parisian chic feel with photographs on the walls featuring the stairs of the National Museum of the Philippines in a most artistic way, and the interior design in total accordance.

The Lobby has seen a lot (according to Mariano’s stories to which I was listening with the greatest interest all night) and been a favourite meeting place for foreign guests and the local jet-set since the hotel opened in 1976. The much-loved menu includes the award-winning Halo-Halo Harana, a mouth-watering cooling tropical dessert made with shaved ice and tropical fruits (macapuno, langka, kaong, nata de coco, sweet beans, garbanzos, pinipig), topped with a scoop of purple yam ice cream and leche flan. Junior guests of the Peninsula Manila can learn how to make Halo-Halo, whose name is derived from the Philippines’ national language Tagalog word for ‘mix-mix’. It continues to hold a special place in the guests’ must-eat list. It was my final destination on my special dining journey that evening. What a culinary experience!

y premier suite provided me with a memorable and special experience. It was a chocolate-shaped traditional Filipino nipa hut ‘Bahay Kubo’ that caught my attention when I first crossed the threshold. As the hotel knew I was going to

be accompanied by my family, they had prepared lots of sweet delicacies for the little ones, who were in

heaven with marshmallows and chocolate in abundance.

London-based designer, Beatrix Ong has won critical acclaim for her work from an early age, first as creative director for Jimmy Choo then with the eponymous shoe range, which quickly garnered significant attention and became available in the world’s most prestigious stores. The eight sections of the case break classicism, but they maintain exquisitely calibrated proportions. Meanwhile, the highly structured case states its presence with clean, taut lines that convey its character and power. Octo’s 110 separate facets are all meticulously worked by hand, with alternating polished and brushed finishes. The mechanical hand-wound Octo Finissimo watch is available in two different interpretations, both endowed with a fifty-five-hour power reserve, recognisable by the small seconds hand appearing on a sub dial at seven o’clock, and also fitted with a black alligator leather strap. The Octo Finissimo Tourbillon features the world’s thinnest tourbillon movement of only 1.95 millimetres. I had the great pleasure of meeting Sylvain during his time in Mauritius and have been following his path to such destinations as Cannes and St Tropez. His aim is to convey the excitement of the Bulgari brand, its timeless glamour and its heritage as a magnificent Italian jeweller. He explains that the brand had the opportunity with Bulgari Hotel & Residences, London to show that a new-build hotel can be timeless in its design by blending into its local historical environment such as Knightsbridge.

Phil Carmichael, who has cooked with Atherton for over ten years, heads up the kitchen, creating a contemporary British menu. The restaurant can take up to 140 diners, who access it via an entrance separate to the hotel, although they may want to have a look at that beautiful creation. In partnership with Marriott International, the London Edition opening marks renowned American entrepreneur Ian Schrager’s return to London for the first time in fifteen years.

Using the building’s elegant, landmark architecture as a backdrop, Schrager and the Ian Schrager Company design team, in conjunction with interior designers YabuPushelberg, have layered modern components throughout the public spaces, bringing straightforward chic to an environment enhanced by unexpected elements and a meticulous attention to detail. Through the hotel’s original doors, guests enter a simple, glass-walled vestibule leading to the lobby where you are greeted by an oversized custom Ingo Mauer polished silver sphere light.

Originally built in 1835 as five luxurious townhouses, the buildings were combined to form the Berners Hotel in 1908, at the height of the Edwardian era. The architecture still shows the Georgian hallmarks that characterise London’s finest residences. The sumptuous interiors, lavishly decorated with marble and intricately carved ceilings, are superb Grade II-listed examples of Belle Époque extravagance at its very finest. It is within walking distance of the most coveted areas in London such as Soho, Covent Garden, Oxford Street and the theatre district.

Now with Berners Tavern under its roof, the London Edition can surely expect local London foodies and international jetsetters to be queuing up to try the fabulously British menu, as well as this unique hotel.

Two large custom-made bronze chandeliers, inspired by New York’s Grand Central Station, suspended from the original five-and-a-half-metre (eighteen-foot) ceilings lend the setting a more intimate feeling.

The cabana, really, is a luxurious bungalow, with a separate toilet and shower, elegant and comfortable sitting area inside. Magazines, Tv, an iPod dock station with a Bose speaker system are at your disposal and a large terrace with a coffee table and armchairs and two loungers aplenty for when you invite friends or family (which would be the usual case!). My meeting goes smoothly and will not be forgotten and in the blink of an eye dinner time arrives.

The warm and elegant service and astonishing array of dining temptations, a luxury pool, private beach experience and beautiful spaces to do business are just a handful of others. On my last trip to Dubai, I decided to set up some meetings at the resort and this led to a rather unusual situation.

The resort has some wonderful beach villas known as cabanas. They’re perfect during the day to chill out in or catch up on some work on the laptop in a relaxed manner, which is my case. Stretched out on a chaise longue and not paying attention to the time, my meeting hour arrives faster than I expect. Of course I’m not exactly dressed to go to a conference, my bathing suit under a white bathrobe is definitely not appropriate, but with a smile on my face I invite the lady who is coming to see me to my cabana.

My text message ‘I guess you did not bring your bathing suit’ is an indication of my own situation, and the super friendly response from my meeting partner encourages me to think that it is not such a bad decision, if somewhat atypical. My dining table in front of the cabana offers a large fruit basket, chilled water and fruit juices. More juice with chilled fruits are brought and the professional coffee machine comes in handy when my guest asks for an espresso. What else?

Since its grand opening in December 2014, the resort has been home to a diverse mix of global cuisines. To mark the milestone, COYA, Jean-Georges and Nusret, together with the resort’s signature venues Sea Fu, Suq and Mercury Lounge, have come together with a special birthday-inspired dessert menu available throughout December. Each decadent dish is accompanied by two glasses of bubbly or innovative mocktails.

Sea Fu, my choice for the night, overlooks the Arabian Gulf, and is a truly chic beachside restaurant with beautiful interior design, a fireplace, open-air bar and great music. I start my culinary odyssey with spicy tuna prepared with asparagus, pickles, radish, chives and spicy sauce. The next delicacies I get are crispy prawns with wasabi lemon dressing and the watermelon-basil soup with burrata cheese and white balsamic. The extraordinary service encourages me to sample more, so I let myself go and try the imperial mussel mariniere with shallot and parsley, and finish with a salt crusted sea bass with greens, rosemary sauce, potatoes and herb sauce.

Needless to say that a serving of an indulgent caramel bomb of salted caramel and pistachio dacquoise sponge accompanied by salted caramel sauce and fig sorbet is only a suggestion – I have no room for anything more! I suggest you do that for me, as this will be available throughout December to celebrate the Four Seasons Resort’s first anniversary.

Watch out, even more dessert delights await at the iconic rooftop Mercury Lounge. Set at the pinnacle of the resort, it pairs miniature homemade ice creams with an infused rose-spiced cocktail. Not to be missed!

Mercury Lounge is to be enjoyed before dinner if you are keen to have a great conversation with your friends in a lounge atmosphere overlooking the skyline. But if you want to listen to the latest tunes, come after dinner when the beats go up.

Bringing its vibrant Latin American flair to the birthday proceedings, the award-winning COYA offers a Peruvian-inspired dessert platter, transporting diners to the heart of Peru.

And finally Jean-Georges Dubai, the UAE’s first restaurant by critically acclaimed triple Michelin star chef Jean-Georges vongerichten, presents a choice of homemade crème fraiche cheesecake served with red fruits and topped with cranberry sorbet in the buzzing JG Kitchen. Try the indulgent warm chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream showcased in the elegantly refined JG Dining Room. Neither will disappoint.

It suggests a nomadic and hypnotic dance of eternal desire, a wild gypsy poetry set in the colourful jewelled cities of the maharajahs, which are eternal like the turning of the earth and the sands of the desert.

the stars have been guiding people to French Polynesia for millennia. The first arrived from south-east Asia 4,000 years ago, reaching the most easterly Society Islands by 500AD. They came in outrigger canoes with coconuts, bananas, breadfruit, chickens, pigs and new gods. The 20th century would bring an icon of the silver screen.

Marlon Brando first came to the island of Tetiaroa in the early 1960s to star in the film adaptation of Mutiny on the Bounty, the tale of Captain Bligh and the crew who overthrew him in 1789, twenty years after Captain Cook was among one of the first Europeans to reach French Polynesia.

Brando was immediately smitten with the beauty of the atoll – a ring-shaped coral reef with a rim that encircles a lagoon – and the sense of being closer to paradise. Enchanted by the Polynesian way of life, he resolved to own the island and succeeded in 1967.

Brando, his French Polynesian actress wife Tarita and their children lived on Tetiaroa for several years. During this time he had a number of visitors, including researchers, noted celebrities and friends. Brando was passionate about preserving Tetiaroa’s natural beauty and astonishing biodiversity, and that has been carried on today.

The Brando is an exquisite luxury resort on French Polynesia’s breathtakingly beautiful private atoll of Tetiaroa, just thirty miles north of Tahiti. Tetiaroa is comprised of a dozen idyllic islands surrounding a spectacular lagoon.

The twenty-two villas along West Turtle Beach and thirteen along South Mermaid Bay have been carefully designed to reflect the Polynesian lifestyle and traditions, with luxurious furnishings, private plunge pool and windows as big as doors that let guests indulge in the sun, the breeze and lagoon views. The resort is committed to keeping the wildlife thriving, the air clean and the lagoon pristine. They have set a goal of net zero carbon impact, and carbon-neutral transportation is an important part of that. The use of fossil fuels, such as oil derived from combustibles and coal, is minimised, and natural gas is limited to cooking.

They believe Tetiaroa can teach people about how fragile and precious tropical islands are. Brando dreamed of building a kind of natural university that would educate others about the many facets of this jewel.

At least 167 fish species have been observed around the atoll, from colourful parrotfish and spotted eagle rays to blacktip sharks and bonefish. During the nesting season, turtles come in their hundreds to lay their eggs on the coral sands beneath the trees.

One of the motus (a reef islet) surrounding the lagoon, Tahuna Iti, is an island of birds. Thousands roost here every evening. There are parrots and other land birds, but most are seabirds, including the noddy and the majestic great frigate. Every evening they are joined by an exodus of birds from Tahiti, making the short flight across the sea to roost in the safety of the dense vegetation, free from predators.

The only motu that has preserved its primitive, original rain forest is Reiono. It also serves as the wilderness home for Kaveu (coconut crabs).

The Brando, just like the man it was named after, is pioneering. It has every luxury expected of such a resort in an idyllic location, but it has a firm grasp on the importance of sustainability and the environment and should be commended for effortlessly combining the two.

PEARL PIONEER ROBERT WAN BEGAN HIS ADvENTURES IN THE INDUSTRY IN 1973 WHEN HE vISITED JAPAN AND MET WITH PROFESSOR SATO, A FRIEND OF KOKICHI MIKIMOTO, WHO PIONEERED THE JAPANESE CULTURED PEARL.

Sato introduced Wan to Mikimoto’s grandson, who promised to be a loyal customer if Wan could produce enough Tahitian black pearls of a consistent high quality. In 1974, when Wan returned to Tahiti, he bought Tahiti Perles, and in a year’s time learned every aspect of pearl farming. Four years later, Wan’s first harvest was entirely bought by Mikimoto.Combining his aptitude for business with his passion for nature’s finest creations, Wan has become a self-taught expert on producing only the highest quality Tahitian pearls. Today he is the world’s largest single producer and exporter of Tahiti’s gem.

Wan’s Tahitian pearls are recognised for their exceptional quality, their fascinating lustre, and their incredible and unique colours from peacock blue to cherry red. They are especially coveted for their remarkable size – beyond thirteen millimetres.

One of the secrets lies in the quality of the hosting oyster, the pinctada margaritifera, indigenous to French Polynesia, which gives birth to pearls of great rarity. The most beautiful pearls see the light of day in Wan’s private island, Marutea Sud.

In 2000, wishing to share his knowledge and love for pearls, Wan opened the world’s first and only museum devoted to this gem. Located in Tahiti, it holds the largest Tahitian pearl ever harvested. Named in his honour, it measures twenty-six millimetres, is baroque-shaped and Tahitian silver

in colour. The most expensive Robert Wan loose pearl currently for sale is 18.21millimetres, round, of an

and Qatar Luxury Group, Robert Wan has established the Qatar Pearl Legacy (QPL).

The mission of QPL is to revive, relive and share the national passion for pearls, facilitating both cultural and educational growth along with protecting the environment.The pearls from Qatar are from the pinctada radiata oyster, a natural inhabitant of the Gulf Sea, and the one-of-a-kind fine jewellery pieces that will be created from the harvests will embody and represent the rich Qatari culture and heritage. QPL will position these gems as a marker of identity and economic development for the country.

The pearl is deeply rooted in the history of Qatar, whose very outline is akin to a teardrop pearl. Every Qatari is descended from an ancestor who made their living from fishing and the pearl trade, so how apt that this history lives on and will once again thrive today.

In 2015, A. Lange & Söhne is celebrating the 200th birthday of Ferdinand Adolph Lange. In his

honour, the commemorative 1815 200th Anniversary F. A. Lange edition in

platinum with a black dial was launched last February. Now, with the introduction

of a second version, A. Lange & Söhne pays tribute to the founder of Saxon precision

watchmaking yet again – with another exceptional timepiece. Its characteristic features: a dial with a special surface finish and a case crafted from an innovative gold alloy.

The solid-silver dial of the new 1815 200th Anniversary F. A. Lange is endowed with a finely textured argenté-grainé surface. With this artisanal decoration, reminiscent of the silvery dials of historic observation watches and marine chronometers, the Saxon manufactory showcases a rare and traditional finishing technique.Composed of 188 parts, the manually wound calibre L051.1 has a power reserve of fifty-five hours. Its key hallmarks include the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, the hand-engraved balance cock, the classic screw balance, the precision beat-adjustment system with lateral set screw and whiplash spring, and five gold chatons that are secured with thermally blued steel screws.
