Transport Flughafen – Downtown: entweder per MRT (ca. 1h) oder Taxi (ca. 25min)

Zug: Im Terminal 2 und Terminal 3 des Changi Flughafen in Singapur befindet sich die MRT (Mass Rapid Transit ) Station. Von hier aus fahren regelmäßig Züge in die Stadt. Die Fahrt dauert etwa 30 Minuten und kostet 2 SGD. Die Züge fahren täglich ab 5:31 Uhr (Sonntags ab 5:59 Uhr) bis 23:18 Uhr abends vom Flughafen in die Stadt. Vom Zentrum, Station City Hall fahren täglich ab 06:09 Uhr (Sonn und Feiertage ab 06:45 Uhr) bis 00:03 Uhr Züge zum Flughafen Singapur Wenn Sie auf dem Weg von der Stadt zum Flughafen einen Zug in Richtung Pasir Ris Station nehmen, müssen Sie an der Tanah Merah Station umsteigen und einen Zug in Richtung Changi Flughafen nehmen.

Taxis: sind an an der Ankunftshalle des Flughafens zu finden. Die Taxis fahren rund um die Uhr. Die Fahrt mit dem Taxi vom Flughafen Singapur in die Stadt, dauert etwa 20 Minuten. Der Fahrpreis beträgt 16 bis 24 SGD, zuzüglich Flughafenzuschlag, der beträgt Freitags bis Sonntags (17.00 – 00:00 Uhr) 5 SGD, ansonsten 3 SGD. 1. Taxi

Perhaps the fastest, most comfortable and most convenient way to travel from Changi airport to anywhere in Singapore. You can find taxi ranks at all 3 terminals.  Taxis in Singapore are fully licensed and all run on meter. The fare to the city is approximately $20 -$35. Depending on the time, day and traffic conditions, there could be some surcharges on top of the metered fare. These include midnight - 6am surcharge (add 50% to the metered fare), airport surcharge (an additional $3 on weekdays or $5 on weekends) and toll charges when the taxi enters the city on Mondays to Fridays when the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) is in effect which is between 7am to 7pm in the Central Business District and between 7:30am to 9:30 am in the other areas. The ERP will operate until 1:00 pm during eve of 5 major public holidays namely New Year, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas. The ERP is not in operation on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Note that there are many officially licensed taxi companies in Singapore, and your taxis might be blue, black, grey, white, cream, yellow, red, or green in colour. 

2. MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)

This is the public electric train system that partly travels both above and underground. Within the terminals, follow the signs "Train to the City" to get to the MRT station which is at the basement of Terminal 2. This is a safe and cheap way of travelling to the city although it is not the most convenient as, depending on which hotel you are staying at, the ride would involve at least one train transfer. Plus, the MRT is not a dedicated airport line. It is a commuter train that plies to the airport. As such, there is no dedicated luggage area in the trains. Changi Airport is a spur line on the East-West  line and you need to transfer to the East-West Line at Tanah Merah station to get to the city. Trains run from 6am to midnight daily. See map details here...

Just note that the MRT station is at the basement of T2 which is connected to T3. If you are at T1 you need to tansfer to T2 via the skytrain. First train is at 5.31am and last train is at 11:18 pm.

Singapore Tourist Pass: Its pretty expensive - as standard 8SGD per day cost for unlimited travel for one day (and it can be purchased for up to 3 days), plus a 10SGD deposit that must be claimed back within 5 days. If you want to keep the card for souvenir purposes then the deposit is lost. It is however a convenient card to grab and go - it operates on all standard MRT and buses (not the late night and niche services). The reason that I say the card is expensive is that you will have to travel a LOT to use 8SGD of travel credit in one day and you must get the deposit back or else count it as cost. You can avoid that deposit by buying online and having it delivered outside of Singapore - but then you have to activate it.

The alternative is getting an EZlink card - that costs 15SGD up front, 5 SGD of which is the card cost, the rest is travel credit. That card can be topped up as you want - some taxis will take it (SMRT for definite and at least 2 of the other brands have readers now), a few outlets will take it. Any unused travel credit can be recovered if you cancel the card - or if you are likely to return the card can be kept active (it is valid for 5 years). A little more complicated but better value for more than a day.

Einreise allgemein: 50 Zigaretten erlaubt, verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente sind verpflichtend zu deklarieren wenn es sich um betäubungs- und/oder abhängigkeitsähnliche Medikamente handelt. Grundsätzlich ist es aber besser, alle verschreibungspflichtigen Medikamente zu deklarieren. Medikamente nur für persönlichen Bedarf + Attest vom Arzt + Rezeptkopie (gültiges Datum) + Originalverpackung und Beipackzettel. Keine Nahrungsmittel oder Dinge aus pflanzlichen/tierischen Materialien. Medikamente deklarieren, evtl. auch Zigaretten, dann sind wir vielleicht sogar schneller durch den Zoll.

When arriving in Melbourne from an international destination, passengers must proceed to the entry control point.  This point is  signed from the moment you depart the aircraft, and is located after duty free, on route to the baggage reclaim hall. You will need to have the following documents ready for the entry control point: Passport + Completed incoming passenger card Once processed, you may continue on to collect your checked bags. After collecting your baggage, proceed to the exiting point where your incoming passenger card will be checked by an officer prior to passing through Customs and Border Protection and the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service. Don't forget to declare any necessary items, as there are severe penalties for failing to declare articles that are prohibited, restricted or for which you are required to pay duty/sales tax.

Check in for your flight at Jetstar.com before you arrive at the airport. Web check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 1 hour prior for flights from domestic terminals and 2 hours for flights from international terminals. The Jetstar domestic terminal, where you would have to walk to, is at the new Terminal 4. The easiest way to get to it is to turn right once you've cleared Customs/Quarantine and just walk across the outside of the main terminal building. Once you've checked your bags in for the domestic flight, you then go upstairs and clear security, and take the very long walk to the Jetstar gates. It's actually several hundred metres and there are no moving walkways, nor is there adequate seating once you get to the gates.

If your flight from Singapore lands on time at 08:50, you'd get to the gate at 09:05, disembark at 09:15, walk down to immigration, get through that, wait for your luggage which could take you past 09:30, then hope the exit queues aren't too long so you can find your bearings and get to Jetstar checkin (it's about 5-10mins walk from the international terminal depending on how many bags you have, how many in your group, how quickly you walk etc.)

Entered a whole new world in Melbourne Airport's new T4. The drop off is a little walk from the entry to the terminal but has escalators and a lift for those who cant use them. The Ground Floor houses both Jetstar and Tiger Airways check in areas and the space is well utilized. Jetstar check-in is like its sister carrier Qantas, with computer module check-in booths. Printed out boarding cards and from there, you either head outside for a breather or upstairs to go through security. Once through security, you forfeit the right to exit unless you want to go through security procedures again but why would you when the new T4 is exceptional with many eateries and good shopping. Tiger Airways terminal is at minimum walking distance but Jetstar requires a good 5 min pace to arrive at the gates. Escalators or travel carts needed for elderly to access Jetstar terminal but modern otherwise.

SO, 24.04.: KANGAROO ISLAND – DAY 1

1) Murray Lagoon: Bald Hill Walk, ca. 500 Meter (1km hin- und retour), max. 30 MinutenNicht spektakulär aber wenn Zeit und Lust, erreichbar über Seagers Road.

2) Seal Bay Conservation Park: je nach Zeit, Lust und Verfügbarkeit guided tour (AUD 33,- p.p.) oder boardwalk (self-guided AUD 16,- p.p.). Boardwalk ist ca. 900 Meter lang (hin und retour), auch hike zum Lookout, es gibt hier auch ein Walskelett zu sehen.Guided tour: 9 Uhr, 9:45 Uhr, 10:30 Uhr, 11:15 Uhr, 12:15 Uhr, 13:00 Uhr, 13:45 Uhr, 14:30 Uhr, 15:15 Uhr, 16:00 Uhr – Dauer ca. 45 Minuten. Look out for the skeleton of the Whale Calf that is behind the Main Beach Viewing Platform having been washed up several years ago.

We took the option of the boardwalk self-guided tour (it was half the price). There were quite a few sealions on the sand around and under the boardwalk, some suckling, and other sealions frolicking on the beach and in the waves. We spoke to some fellow tourists afterwards who had done the guided tour who said they got no closer to sealions than we did; I'm not sure why that was, but it seems we got pretty much the same experience. The whale skeleton was another highlight- it is still in pretty good condition.

3) Little Sahara: Sandboarding oder nur zu Fuß hinauf (je nach Zeit, Lust und Wetter)

Zur Orientierung: Auf die South Coast Road Richtung Rocky River führt irgendwann links die Straße nach Seal Bay. Fährt man weiter auf der Hauptstraße so ist der erste Track, der nach schätzungsweise 5 km wiederum nach links abzweigt, der richtige. Direkt hinter dem Abzweig führt die South Coast Road über eine Brücke. Hat man die passiert ist man schon zu weit und muss wenden. Nach der Abzweigung ändert sich das Landschaftsbild. Links und rechts ragen schon die ersten kleineren Sanddünen aus dem Boden und nach kurzer Fahrt erreicht man einen Parkplatz. Dort stellten wir unser Auto ab und liefen bei strahlenstem Sonnenschein mit schützendem Hut und Trinkwasser ausgerüstet los. Schon nach wenigen Metern, als erkennbar wurde, das man hier wirklich nur auf feinstem Sand läuft, zogen wir die schweren Wanderschuhe aus. Da wir keine Lust hatten zum Auto zurückzugehen stellten wir sie einfach unter einem Busch, wo wir sie nach der Rückkehr selbstverständlich auch wiederfanden. Dann steht man nach ca. 200 Metern Weg vor der ersten großen Düne. Feinster weißer Sand, umgeben von einer äußerst kargem Malle Scrub. Kein Meer weit und breit. Auf etwas mehr als ca. 1 x 1,5 Kilometern Fläche erstreckt sich hier weißer Sand in Haufen, dahinter grüner Busch und blauer Himmel. Den steilen Sandhaufen zu erklimmen ist ziemlich anstrengend und wir kamen schnell ins Schwitzen. Die höchste Düne ist immerhin 40 Meter hoch und die beeindruckenden Sandhaufen wachsen jedes Jahr um 2 Zentimeter. Zum Glück war es dank der Insellage nicht so heiß wie in der Sahara...

Hat man den Kamm der ersten Düne erreicht, folgt dahinter eine noch viel größere. Natürlich hat man den Ehrgeiz, auch diese zu erklimmen, immer auf eine schönere Aussicht hoffend. An den Flanken geht es relativ flach bergauf, nimmt man die Düne geradeaus im Sturm so ist es sehr steil und man tritt eine Menge tiefen Sand los. Wir entschieden uns für die leichtere Umweg-Variante... Belohnt wir man mit einer netten Aussicht, aber auch dort oben kann man von oben nur sehr weit entfernt ein Stückchen Meer bei Vivonne Bay erahnen. Viele Leute waren nicht unterwegs, für australische Verhältnisse war diese Atraktion aber schon ziemlich gut besucht. Einige Mädchen hatten viel Spass daran, den steilen Abhang herunterzuspringen und zu rutschen. Man fällt ja weich. Trotzdem sollte man Rücksicht auf die fragile Ökologie der Dünen nehmen. Wer sich mit mehr Ruhe umschaut, der sieht zwischen den kleinen Büschen und in den Mulden zahlreiche Spuren von Kleintieren: Käfer, Vögel, Eidechsen und Schlangen haben hier ein Zuhause.

Do try to go for both the day and nocturnal tours! Each will unravel treasures of its own and both are equally rewarding.During the day, pay A$7.50 an adult to wander around the wildlife sanctuary at your own pace and liking. My husband and I had a competition to see who could spot the most number of koalas, with the loser having to take care of dinner. We certainly had tremendous fun "hunting" the koalas. These balls of fur were incredibly adorable. We even spotted a mummy koala fast asleep with her baby, which was a little restless. Later, as we were driving out, we caught sight of an echidna on the field!

I also joined the guided nocturnal tour though my husband did not, as he had other pursuits. There were plenty of wildlife around like kangaroos, wallabies and possums. Koalas were actually harder to spot in the night, compared to daytime. But we were rewarded with quite a number, including a mummy koala, with her baby on her back, ambling away from tree to tree. What a treat! But my biggest surprise was when I was driving out in the dark, suddenly a huge koala appeared right in the path of my car! It was as if it had come out to say goodbye. I couldn't believe my eyes when it then moved closer to my car (or headlights). On hindsight, I really should have gotten out of my car, whipped out my camera and took pictures of it. But at that time, I was so afraid I would run it over so my first instinct was to slowly reverse the car and move out of its way.

The Admirals Arch was breathtaking beautiful at sunset, and if you are lucky, you can see fur seals lazing near to the viewing platform (after you climb down to the viewing platform from the top). In the day, you can see more fur seals lazing on the rocks as there is better light. Light vegetation covers the area here, and you can spend some time admiring the beautiful coastlines, carved over many years, naturally.

Man parkt unterhalb des hübschen Leuchtturms auf dem größzügig bemessenen Parkplatz. Eine warme Jacke ist beim Aussteigen aus dem Auto oder Bus nicht verkehrt. Wir kamen im November und der strenge Wind war ziemlich kalt und ungemütlich. Je näher man an die Klippen kommt, um so mehr pustet es.

Da wir erst am späten Nachmittag die Südwestspitze der Insel erreichten hatten die meisten Busse das Gelände schon verlassen. Schon oben, am ersten Aussichtspunkt bekommt man einen ersten Eindruck von der Gewalt des Windes. Ein Holzsteg führt im Zickzack und über einige Treppen hinunter ans Meer. Unterwegs stehen einige Bänke, die im Windschatten der Klippe zu einer Verschnaufpause einladen. Je mehr man sich auf den Holzstegen der Küstenlinie nähert, um so näher kommt man an die New Zealand Fur Seals (Neuseeländische Pelzrobbe - Arctocephalus forsteri) heran, die hier auf den wellenumtosten Felsen gut zu beobachten sind. Sie gehören zur Familie der Ohrenrobben und ihr Lebensraum ist unregelmäßig im südlichen Ozean verteilt. Kolonien findet man sowohl auf der Süd- als auch Nordinsel von Neuseeland, auf einigen neuseeländischen subantarktischen Inseln, auf Macquarie Island, an der Südküste von Australien und vor Süd-Tasmanien.

Hier am Kap liegen sie träge herum oder kämpfen um ein Revier, Besucher stören nicht im geringsten bei diesen Aktivitäten. Zu den Felsen gibt es keinen Zugang, zu allen Aussichtspunkten führen die Holzstege und überall sind Hinweise angebracht, diese nicht zu verlassen. Immer wieder fasziniernd ist es zu beobachten, wie die geschickten Tiere in der tobenden See verschwinden, die sich in heftigen Wellen an der Küste bricht

Man steigt die letzten Stufen um die Felsnase herum hinunter und steht dann endlich vor dem viel fotografierten Felsenbogen. Leider waren wir spät am Nachmittag vor Ort, so dass die Sonne uns direkt durch den Bogen entgegen schien und sich auf den Felsen und dem Wasser spiegelt. Das macht eine Belichtung für ein Foto ziemlich schwierig. Am Mittag ist man hier wohl lichtmäßig besser aufgehoben, muss sich die Szenerie dann aber mit Horden von Bustouristen teilen. Optimales Licht hat man entweder direkt beim Sonnenuntergang oder am frühen Vormittag von hinten. Auch unterhalb des Felsenes sieht man einige Robben, sie ruhen auf den Felsplatten oder tummeln sich in den ruhigeren Tidenpools, wo sie spielen. Ein wenig geschützt steht man hier unten vor dem Wind und auch die Fliegen sind nicht so aufdringlich.

The walk begins through the bush, then you are walking along the Rocky River, and at the end there is a waterfall (seasonal) which falls from quite a height onto a lovely surf beach. The walk is only 4kms return, but quite rocky at the end

7) Stokes Beach: durch Felsen zum Strand (gleich neben Rockpool Cafe), „Beach“-Schild folgen!

The beach was nestled into a cove that is accessible only through a rock tunnel fro, the parking lot. ( which was a lot of fun for our pre-teen kids, but would be a real challenge for people with accessibility issues). The beautiful white sand beach stretches for a good 700-800 meters or more and is enclosed by a steep hillside where wallabies reside (they hide during the day but come out at dusk to feed), there are also rock pools close to the rock tunnel entrance where our kids enjoyed exploring.

We then saw the small 'Beach' sign amongst the rocks. Having negotiated the cramped tunnel through the large boulders we were amazed to find a lovely cove with a sandy beach and rock pools. It is backed by sandy cliffs where a few wallabies were seen bouncing around.

First glance at this cove seems a bit underwhelming. However, if you go towards the headland you will see signs that indicate a path to the beach. The most amazing walk to the beach I have ever been on through the rocky headland almost like going through a cave - very special

Our Pelicans also join the show at 3:30pm and you can see them catching their dinner. Our new Wombat enclosures are nearly complete and once open we will be including a 2pm Wombat feeding. Beim Pelican Feeding im Hafen der kleinen Ortschaft Kingscote handelt es sich um eine Fütterung der Pelikane. Diese Fütterung findet täglich um 17 Uhr Ortszeit statt. Die Pelikane sind jedoch schon etwa eine halbe Stunde zuvor anzutreffen, da sie sich schon auf Ihr Dinner freuen. Diese Fütterung ist wirklich extrem gut, denn der Mann, der die Pelikane mit einem Eimer Fisch füttert, erzählt auch viele wichtige Informationen über diese wunderschönen Tiere. Am Schluss bittet er um 5 AUD Spende für diese Show, welche er in das Futter für die Pelikane investiert.

Around 400 metres from that crossing and on the right-hand side of the road, there is a gravel road with a sign 'Magnetic Hill 8 km'. Just follow the signs. Vor Kreuzung B80 zu B56 (Petersburg Road)

7) Cazneaux Tree: gleich beim Wilpena Pound turnoff (siehe Karte)

You can find the tree on the main Hawker to Blinman Road which goes through the Flinders Ranges National Park. The entrance to the tree is just north of the turn off into Wilpena Pound.There is a fairly decent compacted gravel path which would be okay for prams, walkers and wheelchairs. Follow the path for about 300 metres from the carpark to the tree. This is dependent on weather conditions though. The path was closed in the weeks leading up to my visit due to a massive tree branch coming off another River Gum and collapsing on the bridge that crosses the path

8) Sacred Canyon: wenn Zeit und Lust

It's quite an easy and picturesque walk to the Canyon. The trail into the Canyon is along a dry river bed, lined with ancient river red gums. The art works are not behind a fence. They are all along the rock faces at the spring and you'll find that you walk past (and get very close to) many of them. Visitors are asked to respect these ancient works of art and not touch them. Touching may damage them and they, like their story and the people who created them, could be lost forever.

9) Hucks Lookout + Stokes Hill Lookout: Straße Richtung Blinman nach Abzweig zur Bunyeroo Gorge noch etwas weiterfahren (siehe Karte)

10) Bunyeroo Gorge + Brachina Gorge: nur wenn Straße und Wetter gut! – CHECK visitor centre

The road in starts from the sealed Hawker to Blinman Road. From there the road is 20 kilometres of dirt and, in places, very rocky. 4WD is recommended. If you don't have a 4WD, then a car with a reasonable clearance will be fine. Always check the travelling conditions with the park rangers before entering the gorge. You'll first drive through the scenic Bunyeroo Valley road with its impressive views to Wilpena Pound's Razorback Ridge from the lookouts. Next is Brachina Gorge. The road through the gorge cuts through a 130 million year old timeline. You can see the layers as you travel through. Drive slowly through Brachina Gorge and keep a look out for the endangered Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. You'll see them in the early morning and late afternoon as they soak up the warm sun. Once found in great numbers in the Flinders, it's now estimated that there is one rock wallaby per 1000 square kilometre.

4 km nördlich von Wilpena an der Hawker-Blinman Road befindet sich die gut ausgeschilderte Abzweigung ins Tal, die Yanyanna Hut-Bunyeroo Valley Road. Hier beginnt eine der schönsten Autotouren im Flinders National Park. Der erste Teil der Streck führt ca. 14 km nach Nordwesten über ein Hochplateau auf die Berge zu und windet sich dann jenseits der Yannyanna Hut in spektakulären Kurven bergab zur Bunyeroo Gorge. Es gibt einige Aussichtspunkte, an denen man unbedingt halten sollte um die Umgebung in Ruhe zu betrachten. Die Farben hier sind spektakulär, graun, gelb grün und dazu der tiefblaue Himmel. Besonders schön ist das Licht am frühen Morgen. Man kann die Yanyanna Hütte mit den Stockyards besichtigen, mit hölzernen Ruinen der Schäferhütte aus dem Jahr 1850 und Eisenresten von 1937. Hier kreuzt auch der Heysen Trail. Von weiter oberhalb vom Razorback Lookout hat man einen schönen Blick auf die malerische Strecke und den zweiten Aussichtspunkt, unten auf dem Bild zu sehen. Der Ausblick auf die bewaldeten Hügel und die steilen Flanken der Heysen Range sind von den Lookouts besonders spektakulärBevor sie den Talgrund erreicht, macht die Straße eine große Schleife, es geht sehr steil auf Schotter in die Gorge herab. Dann folgt sie einem kleinen Creek, der allerdings meist sehr wenig Wasser führt. Trotzdem ist oft spätestens hier für konventionelle Autos Schluß, denn es gibt mehrere Wasserstellen im Creek, die zum Teil auch recht tief sind.

Travelling on the main Wilpena – Blinman Road, you will leave the bitumen about 5 kilometres north of the Wilpena access road and take the easy to find scenic drive road on your left hand side of the main road. Initially the drive is through grassy plains, covered with Native Pines and surrounded by bare hills. Within a few kilometres, the purple peaks of the distant ABC Range are the dominant feature. There are three excellent parking bays with stunning views of the Ranges, before the steep descent down into Bunyeroo Gorge. Once down into Bunyeroo Creek, you actually drive up the creek bed, which has been carved out of the ABC Range over 590 million years.

Emerging from Bunyeroo Creek, the road enters the Wilcolo Creek Valley and there is now a dramatic change in scenery, with immensely steep hills, sheer gullies and pyramid peaks, with the Heysen Range on your left and the ABC Range on your right, with dense stands of native pines and giant River Red Gums, with many small creeks to cross. Then within 4 kilometres of Bunyeroo Creek, you are back into open and flat country, changing from open country to native pines, due to the soil nutrients. After passing through one last creek, you are at the T junction, which is the Brachina Gorge Road, and from here the choice of direction is yours

11) Über B83 (Outback Highway) nach Port Augusta – Fahrzeit ca. 1h12min ab HawkerBei Zeit am Weg (wenn noch hell): Kanyaka Historic Site / cemetery + Waterhole & Death Rock Death Rock. 26.5 km south of Hawker on the Hawker - Quorn road. Follow the signs from Kanyaka Ruins or take a short walk from the parking area 1.5 km further south from the Kanyaka turnoff.

The prettiness of the waterhole took my breath away, it was so beautiful and so calm with many nice reflections. It's known as Kanyaka waterhole, and was the water supply for the nearby Kanyaka homestead. Spring fed, it hardly ever runs dry. Apart from the waterhole, the rest of the River was dry, with magnificent Redgums growing along it. There was water trapped in amongst the giant, water worn boulders, be careful with children here, as they could easily fall and drown.I could hear birds and see Kangaroo tracks, at dusk you would see plenty of wildlife here.

A) Moralana Scenic Drive

This 28km drive passes between the Southern wall of the Pound and the magnificent Elder Range. Part of the Heysen trail, the route runs through Arkaba sheep station, linking main roads from Hawker to Blinman and Parachilna. Midway along the route, take the turnoff for Black Gap Lookout to enjoy magnificent views of the outer Pound wall.

The turnoff for Moralana Scenic Drive is approximately 23 km North of Hawker on Wilpena Road. The Moralana Scenic Drive takes you through Arkaba Station and Merna Mora Station country and is between the Elder Range and Wilpena Pound. This drive is always pleasent to the eye and mind and is usually at its best late Winter into Spring. It is advisable, however not to be negotiated in wet weather. Signs sets out certain conditions that you are asked to adhere to as you are on private property. About 15km. along the "drive" look for a signpost to Black Gap Lookout. A short drive 2 km. will take you to this lookout with views of Wilpena's rugged rim to the north and the Red and Elder Ranges to the south. A picturesque little gorge lies below the lookout and is a wonderful place for a picnic lunch. You may also see steel posts "star dropper" markers here which mark part of the Heysen Trail, Hawker to Wilpena.If you have two or three hours to spare, and are fairly fit, you could enjoy an exhilarating walk up to the rim of Wilpena Pound, Bridle Gap and the breathtaking views of the southern

Flinders. This walk has some steep sections and good footwear is advised.If you start from Hawker before 10 a.m. you should still have time to complete the round trip through the rest of Moralana Drive to the Leigh Creek Road and South to Hawker, a round trip of approximately 95 km. On the way back you will see the other side of the Elder Range with the tallest peak being Mt. Aleck, 1128 metres.An ideal sunset lookout is located on the Western side of the Hawker to Leigh Creek road just South of the Moralana Creek. At this lookout is a memorial to the South Australian Surveyor William Greig Evans who surveyed the hundred of Moralana in 1895.

Driving out from Wilpena, turn left towards Blinman and drive 48.7km along the road until you reach the turnoff to the Great Wall on your right. There is no sign on the Blinman road but there is one at the entrance to the Great Wall track. Once you turn onto the track you’ll see the Great Wall of China in front of you about 2km away and the track will tack you right to the base on the northern end. The track continues past the ridge but ends at a locked gate another kilometre or so further on.I climbed the northern end to get the shots from the top (below) which is about 20 minutes hike from the track.

Am Weg nach Glendambo sind einige schöne Lookouts (siehe Beschreibung unten):Range View rest stop (61km nördlich von Port Augusta), Island Lagoon Lookout und vor allem Lake Hart Lookout (Salzsee 49km nach Pimba) – dort auf jeden Fall halten.

Port Augusta to PimbaDistance: 174kmTravel time: 1 hour 50 minutes (approx.)Fuel available: Port Augusta & PimbaMobile phone coverage: Telstra reception is available all the way.This is where you really arrive in the outback. Drive through Port Augusta and look for the signs to Alice Springs and Darwin (go across the big bridge, and up a slight hill). Turn right onto the Stuart Highway and say goodbye to traffic lights and bends. The next set of traffic lights you’ll see are at the intersection of the Stuart Highway and Larapinta Drive – 1200km away in Alice Springs! The first part of the drive is through low, undulating hills, with lots of scrub around you. If you look over to your right, the hills you’ll see in the eastern distance are the Flinders Ranges. For one last look at Spencer Gulf and the Flinders Ranges, stop at the Range View rest stop (61km km from Port Augusta). There’s also a toilet, water, tables & chairs, some good information signs and a geocache. If you’re lucky, you should see quite a few emus on this part of the trip. Keep an eye out for them in spring especially, when you’ll see daddy emus with their chicks (the mums only lay the eggs, the dads care for the young.Not long before you reach Pimba –and if you’re observant- look out to the left (west) and you might spot the remains of Nurrungar – a joint US-Australian ‘spy’ base. It looks like a few white golf balls in the distance.The base closed in 1999 and is empty now, and there is a track going out to it and a lookout. I’ve never been out there, so I can’t say what the road is like.A little further on you arrive at Pimba and Spud’s Roadhouse.Pimba itself is pretty ugly to look at – a ramshackle collection of dilapidated houses with scarcely a tree in sight. However, you can get a meal and you can stay here.

Pimba to GlendamboDistance: 112kmTravelling Time: 45-50min (approx.)Fuel & food available: Pimba & GlendamboMobile phone coverage: Telstra 3G reception is available all the wayFrom Pimba, you’re travelling through some interesting country, dotted with salt lakes and the occasional lookout stop that just begs a photo. There’s a few Geocaches scattered along this section which make the trip more interesting, too.As you travel north, you’re going to pass by some stunning salt lakes. My tip is to take a break and grab some photos at Lake Hart (you can camp here, too). This is also one section of the trip where emus are quite commonly seen – so be on the lookout for them.. After not quite an hour, you’ll reach Glendambo, a tiny little settlement just off the Stuart Highway. There’s a couple of accommodation choices here, and there are actually two roadhouses here –not just the big BP one.There are cheaper backpacker’s rooms near the smaller roadhouse (southern end of town). You can also camp here.I can recommend the basic, but clean motel rooms and the burgers in the big roadhouse.Make sure you get a picture of Glendambo’s famous sign, too.

Von Glendambo bis Coober Pedy durchfahren:

You may wish to fill up your car at Glendambo if you have a small tank.For me, this is always the most boring part of the journey.It might be that I’ve just done this trip too many times – but I am really glad when I finally reach Coober Pedy. I feel like I’m almost home (ok – you’ve still got over 600km until Alice Springs, but you get what I mean). On this part of the trip, you get a sense of complete and utter isolation –some would say ‘desolation’. There are very few trees – the vegetation is predominately bluebush and saltbush- and until you start to see the ‘mullock heaps’ coming into Coober Pedy, very little to look at.

It's quite cool to see it I guess for the novelty factor.

Crocodile Harry was one of Coober Pedy's most infamous characters and lived in one of the most bizarre dugouts. Many people from throughout Europe know of him through the Lonely Planet's "Guidebook to Australia". Other's may recognise his home from the underground scenes of "Mad Max-Beyond the Thunderdome". Harry sadly passed away in 2006 but his Dugout is open to the public from 9am - 12 midday and 2pm - 6pm daily (closed from midday to 2pm), Entry fee : Adults $5 and Children $2

The park is reach by either heading north along the Stuart Highway & taking about 10 km of dirt road, or from the Coober Pedy-Oodnadatta road and driving in. It is best to use both entrances, drive in from the Stuart Highway & leave along the road that leads to the Dog Fence (longest fence in the World) and then follow that to the Oodnadatta Road. I was in a 4WD but the dirt road was smooth & suitable for cars. Passes can be purchased from the Coober Pedy Visitors Centre. You can drive yourself of take one of the tours from town.

Coober Pedy to Cadney ParkDistance: 155kmTravelling Time: 1 hr 30min (approx.)Fuel & food available: Coober Pedy & Cadney ParkMobile phone coverage: Telstra 3G reception is only available until approx. 30km north of Coober Pedy, then there is NOTHINGFree roadside campsites: Free campsites and reviews on WikicampsFrom Coober Pedy, you head north once more, passing lots of mullock heaps, and traversing some low, barren hills.About 50km north of Coober Pedy, you’ll find the famous Dingo Fence. It sneaks up on you quickly and is quite unassuming –meaning it’s not particularly well signposted, so I recommend that you be ready to stop and take a photo.After the dog fence, you travel through some very large cattle stations, so keep an eye out for wandering cows.The terrain also begins to change. You start to see many more acacia shrubs and eventually our beloved outback Mulga trees (very good firewood when it’s dry). There’s also a few more hills.When you get to Cadney Park Roadhouse, you’ll be near the turnoff to the Painted Desert. This is worth a visit – but be warned: it’s a 4WD only track and you’ll need several hours to drive out it.Cadney Park itself is neat, tidy little roadhouse. It’s actually our favourite place to stay and we will stay here on average 4 times each year.The roadhouse’s food is generally good –get the Cadney Burger- and there’s a Happy Hour from 6pm every night. The shop has basic grocery items – again, they are expensive.

Cadney Park to MarlaDistance: 80kmTravelling Time: 45min (approx.)Fuel & food available: Cadney Park & MarlaMobile phone coverage: Telstra 3G reception is available for approx. 20km radius around Marla.Free roadside campsites: Find free campsites using this very inexpensive appThis is a fairly short stretch of the journey, with the prize of mobile phone coverage and a small supermarket at Marla.Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this section is the amount of roadkill you see.For some reason there seems to be more on this section than others. Roadtrains travelling at night and around dawn and dusk, collide with kangaroos and as you might expect, poor Skippy doesn’t stand a chance.The only good thing about this is that you’ll see a lot of Wedge-Tailed Eagles feeding off the poor kangaroos who’ve been killed.Along this section of highway, the terrain continues to soften, with more and more Mulga scrub, and a few dry creeks with Bloodwood trees lining them. Unless there’s been reasonable rainfall, these creeks will always have no water in them.Marla is actually a small village, with a couple of dusty streets, a police station and a mechanical repairs workshop (they only do very basic repairs, however).

The Roadhouse has a very large motel-style accommodation area, and a camping/caravan ground at the rear. The rooms are spacious and comfortable – we’ve stayed here several times in the past few years.There are powered and unpowered sites. The camping area is dirt but it is quiet and away from the highway. The facilities are clean and well cared for.The Roadhouse has meals and a large bar area. As mentioned above, there is a supermarket that is a lot larger than all of the other roadhouses on the Stuart Highway.Marla marks the northern end of the Oodnadatta Track, and is also the turn off to Mintabie – a tiny opal-mining town east of the Stuart Highway.

Marla to KulgeraDistance: 192kmTravelling Time: 2 hrs 10min (approx.)Fuel & food available: Marla and Kulgera.Mobile phone coverage: Telstra 3G reception is only available until approx. 20km north of Marla, then there is NOTHING until Erldunda.Free roadside campsites: Wikicamps shows you EVERY free & secret campsiteHere the terrain begins to become more like what I think of as central Australian: you’ll see Witchetty Bushes, Mulga, Ironwoods, Corkwoods, low ranges and little dry creek beds.There’s a couple of interesting things to see along the way.If you’re travelling through the week (Monday-Friday), you can take the 8km trip into Iwantja Art Centre at the Aboriginal Community of Indulkana. It’s about 50km north of Marla, and the road into Indulkana is very good.As I love visiting Aboriginal art galleries on communities (in fact I ONLY ever buy Aboriginal art from these places or from the artists themselves), I’ll recommend that you check out galleries on communities whenever you get the chance.If you’re not keen on Aboriginal art, then keep going north for another about 130km and you’ll come to the somewhat monolithic border crossing between the Northern Territory (NT) and South Australia. This is definitely worth stopping at for a photo or two.

From here, you’re in the NT and you can legally travel at 130km/h.About 1km over the border is the Victory Downs/Mulga Park Road. This is also the BACK WAY to Uluru – the way you go if you’d like an adventure and want some dirt. Unless you’ve got a 4WD, stick to the Stuart Highway.You’ve got an easy 20km trip until you come to Kulgera Roadhouse, which bills itself as the ‘first and last pub in the Territory’.

At Kulgera, you’ll find reasonable meals, a bar, a grassed campground, motel, cabin and backpacker’s accommodation here. There’s also a police station and a few historic station (Americans: read ‘ranch’) buildings.Kulgera is also the turnoff to the Lambert Centre, Finke (Apatula), Mt Dare, Dalhousie Springs, Old Andado, and the Old Ghan Track (an alternative rough dirt road to Alice Springs).

Nächste Pause: Curtain Springs Station (3h25min, 245km ab Kulgera), am Weg bestenfalls tankenNur Stopp beim Mount Connor Lookout

Kulgera to ErldundaDistance: 85kmTravelling Time: 45 min (approx.)Fuel & food available: Kulgera & ErldundaMobile phone coverage: Telstra 3G reception is only available for approx. 20km radius around Erldunda.Now you’re really in the Northern Territory and on a great stretch of road. There’s a few interesting sandstone rock formations near the roads along the way, and a few dry creeks.As this is a very short stretch, there’s not a lot to stop and see – just keep going until Erldunda where you’ll have mobile phone reception again.Erldunda is the turnoff to Uluru – Ayers Rock, so if you’re heading that way along the Lasseter Highway, please read THIS ITINERARY for another detailed trip description.Erldunda Desert Oaks is a big roadhouse with a lot of accommodation and camping options. We’ve tried them all – the motel rooms are basic and comfortable, but a little overpriced.

Erldunda to Ayers Rock: 3h14min, 246km

50km along the Lasseter Highway: Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse re-opened in mid-2013. There’s fuel, drinks, meals, camping and basic motel style accommodation there.

108km along the Lasseter Highway, you’ll come to the Luritja Road Turnoff: The Luritja Road will take you to Kings Canyon and Kings Creek Station, and if you keep going, all the way back to Alice Springs via places like Hermannsburg or Glen Helen.

139km along the Lasseter Highway is the Mt Conner Lookout:Mt Conner is often mistaken for Uluru by unsuspecting tourists when driving from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock. When you see it, you’ll know at once why this formation fools so many people. Make sure you stop here, stretch your legs and take a look around. (Oh yeah, there’s a Geocache to find, too). Mt Conner is a striking flat-topped mesa that’s about 859m (2821ft) high, and like Uluru, is a sacred site for Yankunytjatjara people. It’s name is Atila in Yankunytjatjara, and it’s associated with the Seven Sisters and Ice Man Dreamings (sometimes called ‘songlines’) which travel from west to east across several hundred kilometres of country. Mt Conner is located on Curtin Springs Station, and the only way to visit it is to book a tour at Curtin Springs. Believe me when I say this: there is no public access. We have heard rumours that Curtin Springs Station has planted tyre spikes on the tracks which lead to the massif to stop the public visiting. You WILL get a flat tyre or two if you attempt to drive to it. If you drive down the dirt road toward Mt Conner (the Mulga Park Road) a kilometre or so, you’ll find a Geocache and a place to take awesome sunset photos of Mt Conner.

Curtin Springs Roadhouse: eventuell Esspause, Tanken!Curtin Springs Roadhouse is located 150km along the Lasseter Highway.Owned by the Severin family, Curtin Springs has is a roadhouse, with fuel, meals, a pub and donga-style accommodation.There’s also a campground. Unpowered campsites are FREE, whilst powered campsite sites are $3. Showers are $3 and before you complain about this, remember that the cost of installing bores to provide water is ASTRONOMICAL.

From Curtin Springs, it’s 80km to Yulara/Ayers Rock Resort and the end of your journey.

Curtin Springs to Ayers Rock Campground: 1h5min

4) Valley of the winds: Morgenspaziergang bis zum Karu Lookout (ca. 1,1 km one way), evtl. noch etwas weiter in die Gorge hinein (je nach Zeit und Lust)

Kata Tjuta is a 50km drive from Uluru. It consists of 36 steep sided monoliths, which, just like Uluru, look most impressive at sunrise and sunset. Again you have to stick to the official sunset viewing area to see the spectacle. Of the twelve walks that used to wind through the valleys here, only two remain. The rest are closed

to enable the Anangu to hold their traditional ceremonies. (As you can imagine, there are no more ceremonies amidst the carnival at Uluru.)Walpa Gorge Walk: 2.6 km return/1 hourLeads up a rocky slope and then into a shady, moist gully where it ends on a viewig platform.Valley of the Winds Walk: 7.4km circuit/3 hoursTo me this is by far the best walk in all of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It retains a sense of wilderness and the scenery is just spectacular. Kata Tjuta is nowhere near as busy as Uluru, and if you pick a good time (like very early or late in the day) you may be alone for much of the walk.

6) Fahrt Ayers Rock Resort – Kings Canyon: 3h41min (304km): Durchfahren, Tankmöglichkeit auch in der Kings Creek Station (40km vor Kings Canyon Resort)

Watarrka National Park is an internationally and nationally significant conservation area with water holes and gorges providing refuge for over 600 species of  plants and many native animals.The spectacular red walls of the Canyon soar 100 metres above pockets of dense forest including ferns and cycads as well as the usual species like river red gums, grevilleas and black gidgee.The thing that everyone raves about at Watarrka is the Canyon itself.And there’s really only one way to see the Canyon: put on your best walking shoes and do the six-kilometre ‘canyon rim’ walk.The rim walk will reward you with magnificent views of the Canyon rim and the amazing weathered domes of ‘The Lost City’ and an outback oasis known as the ‘Garden of Eden’. This really is an experience you won’t forget.Remember if you are going to go walking, please be prepared.Wear suitable footwear, a hat and sunscreen and suitable clothing. Oh, and remember to take ample water and most importantly make sure you drink it.People seem to think they are invincible and I can’t remember how many young, seemingly fit people I have had to help off the Canyon because of dehydration.

Getting ThereKings Canyon is located 300 kilometres north east of Ayers Rock/Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and 320 kilometres south west of Alice Springs.If you’re planning on driving up from Ayers Rock, it takes about 3 to 4 hours to drive to the Canyon via the Lasseter Highway and Luritja Road.

And just in case you’re wondering: fuel and basic supplies are available at Kings Canyon Resort (located within the park) and Kings Creek Station (located just east of the park).

See and DoYou might have gathered from what we’ve written above that walking and photography are a MUST if you’re visiting Kings Canyon.Of course, the walk that everyone raves about is the Canyon Rim walk.This 6km round trip hike is one of Australia’s most stunning walks, and after the first steep ascent, is virtually flat. It will take you around 3 hours – not because it’s tough, but because there’s simply so many stunning changes of scenery.We really mean it when we say this: if you do nothing else when you visit, make sure do the Rim Walk.There’s also a sunset viewing area where you’ll get great photos of the colours on the canyon walls as the sun sets.

Kings Canyon’s Most Spectacular WalkOf all the possible Kings Canyon hiking you could do, the Kings Canyon Rim Walk is the most famous and most spectacular.The Rim Walk is six kilometres in length, and suitable for relatively fit walkers who are able to take on an initial climb up about a thousand (1000) steps to the top of the Canyon. The Kings Canyon Rim Walk can be completed in about three to four hours depending on how often you stop to admire the extraordinary scenery. Even though I’ve done this walk hundreds of times, it’s still one of my very favourites.

What to ExpectAs you begin to climb upwards you get a sense of what a very special experience you are about to have. That first look into the Canyon inspires you to keep going even though you’re not at the top yet. The first part of the walk is an ascent of 1000 steps, with several places to stop and rest (and pinch yourself at the amazing scenery along the way)!There is no denying that many people will find the climb very tough. However, if you take it slow and easy, you’ll find that the rest of the walk is a pretty easy going once you’ve got to the top! It’s not long before you go through Priscilla’s Crack made famous by the 1994 movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Once through here, you come to the first lookout and an awesome view across the north wall to the south wall of the canyon. You may have heard of the Lost City; here at the canyon it is best described as a series of sandstone domes which somewhat resembles the structure you might have found in an ancient city.No matter what you think or imagine you’ll find the views magical. I guarantee they will leave you spellbound.From the Lost City you continue to wander through the domes and can choose to follow the path out to Cotterill’s Lookout, so named after one of the first tour operators to the area, or continue on the Garden of Eden via one of the most striking staircases you’ll see in the outback. This is a really interesting side track which wends its way along the steep sandstone banks of Kings Creek to a permanent waterhole from which the overflow spills out into the floor of the canyon.

On your return from the waterhole you’ll climb up out of the Garden of Eden using almost a mirror image of the staircase used on your way down and continue on your way around the mouth of the canyon until you get to the south wall.If you walk down past the cliff safety sign and parallel to the edge you’ll come to a spot that is great for taking a photo back along the cliff edge to the waterfall.Once you leave the south wall you are past half way and heading back towards the car park, but wait!There are still plenty of sights to see along the way.You’ll be surprised at how many plants are growing out of what seems like stone, and if you read our signs you will find a wealth of information to help you understand just how this can happen.It’s pretty well all downhill from here but you’ll still see some great scenery until at the end of a ridge line you will start the final descent towards the carpark.

When to Walk?The Kings Canyon Rim Walk is a walk that most people should only consider doing between May-September.The walk is mostly atop the escarpment, very exposed and there is little shade.However, if you choose to hike from October-April (summer time in Australia), remember it’s very, very hot: 38-42 degrees Celsius. That’s over 100F.Rangers frequently have to rescue people from the Rim Walk during summer because of heat exhaustion. Be warned!!That said, you can hike the Kings Canyon Rim Walk in the summer (it doesn’t get closed like the Uluru climb), but you need to be sensible.We recommend you do the following if you’re hiking in summer:Take at least 4 litres of water per personGo early in the morning (about 5.30-6.00am)Aim to be down from the Canyon Rim by 10amDon’t do it if you are NOT A REGULAR EXERCISER!The Kings Canyon Rim Walk really is one of the great walks of the outback and something you won’t forget in a hurry.There’s nothing like a bit of competition and so we are always stirring the park staff at Uluru and saying that Kings Canyon is far better. Der Kings Canyon Rim Walk leitet durch die Hauptattraktion des Watarrka-Nationalparks im Western Territory

Charakter: Moderate Wanderung, die jedoch aufgrund der in der Regel hohen Temperaturen nicht zu unterschätzen ist. Nicht geeignet für Rollstuhlfahrer und Kinderwägen.

Anfahrt: Stuart Highway bis Erldunda, Abzweigung auf Lasseter Highway Richtung Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Abzweigung Richtung Watarrka National Park auf Red Centre Way, einige Kilometer vor Kings Canyon Resort rechts zu Kings Canyon. Großflächiger Parkplatz vorhanden (kostenlos).

Der Kings Canyon ist eines der spektakulärsten Naturwunder Australiens. Ein Plateau mit Felsdomen und im Inneren von schroffen, roten Felsformationen und bis zu 200 Meter hohen Steilwänden beschützt, fließt der Kings Creek durch eine Oase blühender Vegetation. Das innere des Canyons kann auf dem "Kings Creek Walk" leicht innerhalb einer Stunde besichtigt werden, die Strecke beträgt hin und zurück gerade einmal 2 km. Interessanter und sehenswerter ist hingegen der sogenannte "Kings Canyon Rim Walk", einem gut markierten Rundweg entlang der oberen Klippen des Canyonsn (Distanz 6 km, Dauer ca. 3 bis 4 Stunden).

Vom Parkplatz aus geht es an einem Informationshäuschen mit kostenloser Trinkwasserquelle (Wasserflaschen auffüllen und Sicherheitshinweise beachten ist angeraten) vorbei in Richtung Aufstieg. Die meisten Höhenmeter dieser Tour sind bereits zu Beginn zu bewältigen, aufgrund der gut ausgebauten Felstreppe ist dies aber kein größeres Hindernis und so erklimmen wir in guten zehn Minuten den ersten lohnenswerte Aussichtspunkt auf dieser Wanderung. Von dort aus führt ein gut präparierter Pfad entlang der Klippen des Kings Canyons in Richtung Norden, dem wir durch die zahlreichen Wegweiser leicht folgen können.

Absturzgefahr besteht an keiner Stelle des Tracks, solange man sich entlang der Pfade bewegt. Vorbei an bizarren Felsformationen und Sandsteinkuppeln geht es sprichwörtlich über Stock und Stein durch breite Hochtäler bis zu einem etwas östlich gelegenen, markierten Aussichtsplateau mit Blick in und über den Canyon. Vorsicht sei hier geboten, es existieren keine Zäune oder Gitter am Klippenrand, vereinzelt klaffen darüber hinaus Spalten im Felsboden. Von dort oben erhaschen wir einen tollen Ausblick auf die gegenüberliegenden Steilweände des Canyons, bevor wir weitergingen.

Am Zentrum des Canyons angekommen führt eine Holztreppe hinunter ins idyllische Innere, dem "Garden Of Eden", einer fruchtbaren Rinne welche einen Großteil der an die 600 Pflanzenarten die im Watarrka National Park vorkommen beheimatet. Unten angekommen überqueren wir eine Brücke auf die andere Seite des Flusses und steigen die dort angebrachte Holztreppe wieder hinauf. Auf halber Höhe kann man rechts zu einem paradiesischen Wasserloch abbiegen, das gerne als Chance zum Abkühlen genutzt wird. Nach dem kurzen Aufstieg befindet man sich quasi am Gipfel, der Hälfte der Tour und wir genießen nun von der anderen Seite aus den Blick auf den Kings Canyon mit seinen prächtigen Färbungen, während wir langsam weiter in Richtung Süden wandern.

Ein paar markierte Aussichtspunkte nehmen wir noch mit, bevor wir dem Ende der Wanderung entgegenkommen. An einer Stelle kann man übrigens direkt auf das bereits erwähnte Wasserloch blicken, wo sich zumeist einige Touristen tummeln und sich im kühlen Nass baden. Entlang des markierten Pfades geht es nach ca. 3 Stunden hinunter ins Tal und über ein ausgetrocknetes Flussbett erreichen wir wieder den Parkplatz.

Abschließend sei nochmals erwähnenswert, dass nicht die Route ist das gefährliche ist, sondern die Hitze und die pralle Sonne zu Problemen führen können. Man sollte daher ausreichend Trinkwasser und Sonnenschutz dabeihaben. Wer dennoch Kreislaufprobleme etc. verspürt, sollte dringlichste eine der drei Notruftelefone aufsuchen, die sich entlang des Pfades befinden.

Einkehr- und Übernachtungsmöglichkeit:Circa 6 km westlich des Kings Canyon befindet sich das sogenannte "Kings Canyon Resort". Es bietet verschiedene Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten sowie ein Roadhouse und einen kleinen Tankstellenshop um Verpflegung zu kaufen.

The Mereenie Loop Road is an unsealed road and four wheel drive is recommended, but you usually don't need it. The only exception may be after rain, if the road has been damaged, or if it is still wet. If it rained recently the road may be closed.But as I said, usually any car is just fine. All you have to deal with are pretty bad corrugations (unless you are lucky and they just graded it).Be aware however, that hired vehicles are not usually allowed on unsealed roads at all, no matter how good the road!The Mereenie Loop Road takes you through Aboriginal country, so you need a permit (see below) and you are not allowed to do anything here. Don't leave the road, don't park and go walking, no picnicking, no camping, no nothing.The only place where you are allowed to pull up is the official "Jump-up" Lookout and rest area, not far north of the Watarrka National Park border.DistancesThe distance of the Mereenie Loop itself (the part that requires a permit, see below) is 93 km.The distances between the nearest accommodation options / fuel outlets are as follows:Kings Canyon Resort - Hermannsburg: 197 kmKings Canyon Resort - Glen Helen Outback Resort: 225 km

DO NOT listen to the staff at The Kings Canyon Hotel as they will tell you NOT to travel this badly corrugated rocky dangerous road. Luckily I ignored their advice and went as this was a major part of our trip and we were not disappointed. It was like a typical Kiwi gravel road - as wide as a 4 lane highway with yes some corrugations and rocks but wow the fact of doing it far outweighed the bumps.. in fact that added to the outback adventure.

Swimming - The Gorge has a near-permanent waterhole situated 500 metres from the Visitor Centre. The water hole is ideal for swimming, especially in the warmer months. Swimmers should be aware that most water holes are extremely cold. Prolonged exposure, even during summer, can result in hypothermia. Beware of submerged logs and rocks.

Walking - The best way to appreciate the scenery of Ormiston Gorge and Pound is to follow one of the many marked walking tracks. The 5 minute Waterhole walk and the 20 minute Ghost Gum Lookout walk are the most popular with visitors.

6) Ochre Pits: 14min ab Glen Helen Gorge

A short (about 300m) paved path takes you to a viewing platform. There are also steps down into the creek bed so that you can get closer to the cliff. The colours in the cliff are wonderful and what makes it thought provoking is that if you block out the platform this is how it would have looked a thousand years ago

Here there is beautiful clear sand and you can walk in two different walks (a short walk about 5-10 minutes to arrive to the hole and a medium loop walk (the dolomite walk) about 1,5 hours to see a greater perspective of the gorge). For me, it is the best hole in the zone and one of the best attractions near Alice Springs!This is a lovely waterhole in the middle of the desert that never dries up. It's a really easy 300m paved walk from the carpark. It's really beautiful with the canyon walls on both sides and the ranges surrounding the whole area. Great place for swimming although it was too cold when we were here but would imagine would be great in summer. You can get a lovely reflection of the canyon walls on the water and take some great photos.It's a 2km bumpy dirt road to get here, which is the only downfall.

10) Standley Chasm: 48min ab Ellery Creek Big Hole,nur wenn Zeit, da auch entry fee verlangt wird – letzter Eintritt um 16:30 Uhr, AUD 12,- p.p., Kiosk eventuell für einen Kaffee

Standley Chasm, 50 km west of Alice Springs, is the only privately owned gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges, and that means there is an entry fee to cover the maintenance of the facilities.The narrow chasm is truly spectacular. At lunch time, when the sun is right above it, the steep walls light up in orange and the bottom of the chasm fills up with tourists.I reckon buy a post card and avoid the peak rush...We were here in the late afternoon, and I enjoyed our visit a lot more than I had expected.It's a lovely walk, and if you don't mind a bit of climbing you can also continue to a second smaller chasm that few people know about...

Short 20 min walk into Standley chasm nice easy walk gorgeous rock formations nice for the keen photographer. There's a kiosk an gift shop a small entry fee toilets and sheltered car park. Recommend seeing this attraction

11) Simpsons Gap: Alternative oder wenn Zeit zusätzlich zur Standly Chasm: 59min ab Ellery Creek Big Hole, 42min ab Standley Chasm

The name says it, Simpsons Gap is another gap in the ranges. The best thing about it is that everybody can get to it, whether you have transport or not. Just hire a bicycle for a day. It's a 17 km ride one way.Simpson's Gap is a pleasant spot and there are a few walking tracks in the area, as well as picnic facilities.The best thing about it though is the colony of Black-footed Rock-wallabies that lives on the rocky slope. You're just about guaranteed to see some of them, especially mornings or afternoons.

There is a short walk along a path from the car park to the gap, or you can follow the creek bed for many picture opportunities. Plan on spending at least a ½ hour here.

This is a great place to visit with kids, free entry into the park (unlike Stanley chasm) and you may even get a chance to see the rock wallabies. We were lucky and saw 5 of the 20 that live there. It is an easy walk down to the gap takes about 10 minutes return from carpark

Erldunda Roadhouse is a very popular stop for people driving from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock.In fact, you’ll often find this roadhouse crowded with all manner of tourist buses, camper vans, 4WDs, cars and people!Erldunda has a caravan park, cafe, tavern, service station, a Geocache, and some interesting things like a giant concrete Echidna and (live) emus.

130 km south of Alice Springs, the next point of interest is the Finke River. Just before the bridge is a tiny rest area located on the eastern side of the highway.It’s a popular stop for people driving from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock.The rest area has a toilet, some water, a couple of picnic tables. In the winter time, this rest area is packed full of camper trailers.Why? The location is superb: right next to the mighty Finke River (which only flows a couple of times each year).The rest area has a 24 hour limit on camping, so no long term camping.And yes, there is a Geocache here.

2) Henbury Meteorite Conservation Reserve: ok, aber nicht zwingend, 1h27 ab Erldunda (85km)

138km south of Alice Springs and you’ll pass the Ernest Giles Road intersection. This is turn off to Kings Canyon (Watarrka), and is a 4WD only road.. A quick and interesting side trip along the Ernest Giles Road is to the small but interesting Henbury Meteorite Craters, located 11km in off Stuart Highway.

Located 145km south west of Alice Springs, the Reserve can be reached in a conventional 2WD vehicle. At 132 km south of Alice Springs, along the Stuart Highway there is a gravel road leading to Watarrka National Park - Kings Canyon. Travel along this road for 8 km, then turn north for 5 km to the Reserve's entrance.A 1.5 km path winds around the largest craters, which are best viewed at sunset and sunrise

3) Stuart Wells Roadhouse: Pause und Kamelfarm

80 km south of Alice Springs is Stuarts Well Roadhouse. Even if you don’t stop at any other roadhouse when driving from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock, I recommend you stop here. At Stuart’s Well, you’ll find a caravan park, restaurant, pool, toilets, emus and kangaroos. There’s also a Geocache. Next door is a camel farm where you can take a short camel ride.

4) Rainbow Valley: 22km lange dirt road, lt. Google 2h30min für 91km!!! Sehr gut überlegen, Fotomotive ist sehr schön, aber vor allem zur sunset time, 40min walk zum Mushroom Rock

How to Get ThereThe turn-off to the Reserve is 75 km south from Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway. From here it is a 22 km stretch east, along an unsealed road which has some sandy patches. For this reason, access is recommended for 4WD vehicles only.

5) Welcome to Alice Springs Sign (am Weg Stuart Highway, Straße 87) – siehe Karte6) Emily und Jessie Gap: East MacDonnell Ranges

Located 10km east of Alice Springs, the Park is an easy 15 minute drive along the sealed Ross Highway. Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park is located in the Heavitree Range (part of the East MacDonnell Ranges) approximately 10 kilometres east of Alice Springs. The Park is approximately 800 metres wide and 8.6 kilometres long and features two attractive Gaps with semi permanent waterholes. Access from Alice Springs east to Emily and Jessie Gaps is via the sealed Ross Highway. The Park is popular with locals and visitors alike who visit the area briefly, usually before proceeding to other locations in the East MacDonnell Ranges.

ABER: wenn Mereenie Loop wegen Wetter (Regen) nicht möglich, dann wohl auch Fahrt zum Henbury Crater und ins Rainbow Valley nicht besser oder einfacher!

Alternative wenn Regen und nur Fahrten auf asphaltierter Straße möglich: schnellstmöglich nach Alice Springs (mit Pausen in 6h – 6h30 machbar) und dann je nach Zeit ausgewählte Ziele der West MacDonnell Ranges (z.B. Ellery Creek, Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap) oder East MacDonnell Ranges (Emily & Jessie Gap) und/oder Erholung im Pool

Auch denkbar wenn schlechtes Wetter schon vorher bekannt: Mehr Zeit beim Uluru / Kata Tjuta verbringen und Kings Canyon Rim Walk erst am Morgen machen und dann Fahrt nach Alice Springs via Stuart Highway

1) Wycliffe Well: UFO town, ein paar Fotos schießen

Wycliffe Well Holiday Park

Wycliffe Well is an oasis in the desert, and Australia’s UFO hot spot. Wycliffe Well is located 380 kilometers north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway, perfectly situated as a stop over. Wycliffe Well Holiday Park occupies a land area of approximately 60 acres, housing onsite accommodation options, grassed unpowered spaces and powered sites. The park is only a few minutes drive to one of the Northern Territory’s most renowned attractions, the Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve. There is also an auditorium, bar, animal sanctuary, a large fishing/crabbing lake, restaurant and stage with an Aboriginal performance theme. Wycliffe Well is also home to one of the largest range of beers in Australia.

2) Devils Marbles: 20min ab Wycliffe Wells, free entry, ein bisschen herumspazieren

The Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles are clusters of mysterious rock spheres located in the scenic Australian desert near the outback town of Tennant Creek, scattered in heaps throughout a wide, shallow valley. The boulders, which are often precariously balanced on top of one another, were formed by millions of years of erosion. The local Aboriginal people, the Warumungu, believe that the boulders are the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent. The ancient Aboriginal mythology surrounding this fascinating geological marvel can be explored through a short self-guided walking trail and informative signage. The Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve, stretching over 1,802 hectares, is home to a wide variety of unique desert flora and fauna, including goannas and finches. The reserve is located approximately 400 kilometers north of Alice Springs or 100 kilometers south of Tennant Creek. The nearest town, Wauchope, offers a limited range of accommodation and facilities.

How to Get ThereThis 1,802 hectare Reserve extends along both sides of the Stuart Highway approximately 393 km north of Alice Springs. The nearest settlement is Wauchope, 9km to the south, where fuel and limited stores can be obtained.

What to See and Do An easy short (15 minutes return) self guided walk commences from the carpark on the western side of the road (the day use area) with signs explaining the formation of the 'marbles'. Visitors can wander around the site along a network of informal walking tracks.

Tennant Creek - Mary Anne Dam: Mary Ann Dam Recreation Lake is a cool oasis, five kilometers north of Tennant Creek. This man made dam is a pleasant surprise in a rugged, Central Australian environment, offering an ideal picnic spot where the lake provide a cool oasis for locals and tourists alike and is large enough to allow for canoeing, windsurfing and other water sports.

The famous Junction Hotel/Store & the Drovers Memorial statue dedicated during the Last Great Cattle Drive in 1988. Its set in the middle of a working station and well worth a visit. The Drover's Memorial Park features a large bronze statue of a drover allowing passers by to step back in time and gain insight into life in the rugged and lonely Northern Territory outback. Visitors access is through Newcastle Waters Station. Please observe all station rules that apply.

8) Daly Waters Historic Pub: 133km ab Newcastle Waters, geöffnet 7 Uhr bis Mitternacht, Stopp für Essen (je nach Ankunftszeit), Trinken, Tanken

Daly Waters can be found about 270 kms south of Katherine, close to the junction of the Carpentaria and the Stuart Highway. Daly Waters Pub is on the Stuart Highway actually near the intersection of Stuart Highway and Carpentaria Highway. A township which comprises a few houses and the very famous Daly Waters Hotel.

Bitter Springs Thermal PoolsThe beautiful Roper River is born just a short walk from Bitter Springs Cabins & Camping. While the Roper has its Wet Season source some 50 kilometres to the north, numerous subterranean springs around Mataranka pour more than 30 million litres of warm water into the Roper each day. This outpouring from the aquifer starts around Bitter Springs and flows into the Little Roper River which links a series of pools all the way to Rainbow Springs and the Mataranka Thermal Pool. It is this fresh water that keeps the clear blue Roper running throughout  the year. Bitter Springs is part of Elsey National Park and is Mataranka's newest thermal pool. It has a day use  area with barbecues, tables and eco-friendly toilets. A walking path loops around the area, winding under fan palms (Livistona rigida), past the swimming pools and through the pristine riparian ecology of the Roper River. To the right the fan palms can be seen from a fish's point of view, up through the clear waters of Bitter Springs Thermal Pools. If you are not the adventurous type then there is stairway entrance to the main pool where you can just loll about soaking up the effects of the luxuriant 32 degrees Celsius spring water. There is another way to experience Bitter Springs. Wade into the warm waters of the Spring and drift with the flow down along the stream that connects the two swimming areas and on to the exit ladder at the pedestrian bridge on the walkway that circles the Spring area. This Aquatrail (a typical underwater view on right) drifts a couple of hundred metres down through the Springs. The water is incredibly clear, with an underwater mask, freshwater turtles are often seen swimming amongst the reed beds. At the end of the gentle drift, a ladder lets the adventurer climb out onto the Bitter Springs walking path and return to the main pool for another go round. Swimming back up against the current is not recommended. Guests of Bitter Springs Cabins and Camping can hire foam noodles (floatation devices) that make drifting around the main pool or the trip downstream even more enjoyable. Masks and snorkels are also available to hire at Bitter Springs Cabins & Camping.

The layout of our caravan park is very informal, you can choose your own spot. Stay hitched up to your caravan if you want. Campfires are allowed in the riverside unpowered campground and pets are welcome. Sorry, no generators please! The Little Roper River borders our park so our guests can camp right on its banks and enjoy the natural bush setting. The Caravan Park has powered sites with bore water on tap, toilets, showers, camp kitchen and a laundry. There is plenty of space so you wont be crammed in like sardines! Wallabies are abundant and barramundi and other fish are caught in the river. The rare Red Goshawk nests in this area and birdwatchers are regular guests in the campgrounds and cabins. The Bitter Springs Thermal Pools are a 500 metre walk or short drive from Mataranka Cabins and Camping.

Bitter Springs at Mataranka Bitter Springs Mataranka NT When travelling through Mataranka and you are looking for a nice relaxing place to have a dip and actually stretch out and do some laps, try Bitter Springs Thermal pool instead of the well frequented Mataranka Thermal pools. The springs here actually branch off into a stream which you can follow down 100 metres to a bridge & ladder to climb out of then go for a walk around the springs. Consistently deeper than the Mataranka thermal pools, Bitter Springs wasn't suited for very young children (under 8's). But much quieter. Take a floaty with you to paddle down to the 2 exit points along the stream.

10) Elsey National Park: nur wenn Zeit zusätzlich zu den Bitter Springs, z.B. Mataranka Thermal Pools, Stevie’s Hole oder Botanic Walk oder Fahrt zu den Mataranka Falls oder Elsey Cemetery

Elsey National Park, eight kilometers from Mataranka, is another of the region’s natural attractions. The massive Roper River slices through this 140 square-kilometre expanse, flowing through large waterholes then tumbling over rocks and tufa dams. Canoeing and fishing are popular activities and swimming is great at Bitter Springs and the Thermal Pool. Scenic riverside walking tracks to Mataranka Falls are a great way to explore the Park overland.The Rainbow Springs and Thermal Pool sector of the Park are a major attraction for visitors. The spring water rising from underground at 30.5 million litres per day and at a temperature of 34 Degrees Celsius is then contained in a relaxing swimming pool surrounded by a palm forest. The Park has three access points. To access the main Thermal Pool (Mataranka Hot Springs), take the Homestead Road turnoff (1.5km south of Mataranka on the Stuart Highway) and follow it for around 7km. To access the facilities along John Hauser Drive, turn off the Homestead Road around 4km from the Highway. The Bitter Springs access is via a sealed road leading directly from the Mataranka township.

Elsey Falls at Mataranka Mataranka Northern Territory Only 100 km south of Katherine A great place to see some free Barramundi feeding, where the fish are pulled from the water with bare hands. Have a relaxing swim in the many thermal pools and crystal clear streams. Walk along the many shady walking trails amongst the massive palm trees. We have stayed here several times so far during 2003 - 2009 as we poke around in different parts of the region. Next time we will be off to the 12 mile yards to camp and walk along the Roper River to Mataranka falls, after walking and enjoying the 1 hour "Botanic Walk" .

Old Elsey Cemetery: muss nicht sein (nur wenn sehr sehr viel Zeit)The Old Elsey Cemetery, 21 kilometers from Mataranka, has graves dating back to 1926. It’s a significant part of Australia's heritage and is the final resting place of many local characters written about in the famous 1908 novel 'We of the Never Never' by Jeannie Gunn.

Wenn schon früher dort (gegen 9 Uhr, spätestens 9:30 Uhr):- Baruwei Lookout walk (zweiter Parkplatz, ca. 500m von dort, max. 1 Stunde, in 45min machbar)- alternativ eventuell für eine Stunde ein Kanu mieten, rentiert sich aber eigentlich nicht

An early morning walk to Baruwei Lookout (the shortest walk I could find) was somewhat ruined by the intermittent sound of blower vacs clearing the paths for the other day visitors to come. The path was really steep (as the information said), but really well formed, with either steel or rock steps, and handrails where needed. Being extremely unfit, things like the sight of 2 feeding wallabies, along with better and better views the higher I got, kept me motivated... and the effort was was well worth it... (the blower vacs had done their work by then). I was treated to the most amazing scenery and peace .. do it! Coming down, the return along the Katherine River was lovely, offering another way to see the river.

4) Edith Falls: Swimming Plunge Pool + Leliyn Trail mit Schwimmen im Upper Pool (1 Stunde, mit Schwimmen ca. 2 Stunden), ca. 1 Stunde Fahrtzeit ab Katherine Gorge

Leliyn Trail - a 2.6 km, Grade 3 (moderate), 1 hour circuit that ascends a hill then goes down to cross the upper pool above the falls. It then climbs up the other side of the falls before descending to the level of the main pool where there is a river crossing. Views of the waterfalls and Edith River from two lookouts, on one each side of the river, feature in this walk. So does swimming in the upper pool. Wet season conditions can limit access, reducing the walk to a return trip to the first lookout and top pool.

Ein malerischer Wander und Kletterpfad ist der Leliyn Loop, mit insgesamt 2,6 km in gut 1,5 Stunden zu begehen. Allerdings sollte man noch genügend Zeit für eine ausgiebige Badepause einrechnen. Man braucht schon etwas Kondition, Wasser und eine Kopfbedeckung sowie gutes Schuhwerk wie fast überall in Australien. Wir haben uns für den Aufstieg entgegen dem

Uhrzeigersinn entschieden, was die besser Wahl war, denn hierbei ist das erste Stück Weg länger und anstrengender. Nach einem Bad kann man dann relativ gemütlich den einfacheren Weg zurückgehen.

Beginnend vom Parkplatz füht der gut ausgeschilderte Wanderweg zuerst hinauf auf den Steilabbruch des südlichen Arnhemland, dann windet er sich etwas durch die Landschaft auf dem Felsplateau bis zu den den Upper Edith Falls. Am Bemang Lookout kurz vor den Pools hat man eine wunderbare Aussicht auf die Fälle und die Umgebung. Bemang ist der Aboriginal-Name für die hier lebende Kragenechse. Sogar zur Trockenzeit rauscht tief unten eine Menge Wasser herunter, in der Regenzeit sind die Fälle wahrscheinlich kaum zu überbieten.

Dann geht es wieder ein wenig bergab und man überquert den Fluss über eine Holzbrücke. Zwischen einigen Felsbänken haben sich hier mehrere mit Kanälen und Wasserfällen verbundene Pools gebildet. Direkt vor der Brücke ist ein wunderbarer Platz, um an einer kleinen Sandbank ins Wasser zu gehen. Das ist erfrischend und kalt, nach einger Eingewöhnungszeit kann man herrlich in verschiedene Ecken des pools schwimmen. Dort, wo der Wasserfall von oben in ein kleineres, abgegrenzts Becken fällt, bildet sich eine Art natürlicher Whirlpool. Auf der anderen Seite der Brücke kann man von mehreren schrägen Fellsplatten ins Wasser gehen. Edith Falls war für mich die schönste Stelle zum Schwimmen auf unserer Reise.

Der Edith River entspringt gut 22 km weiter flussaufwärts, für konditionsstarke Wanderer bietet sich noch der 8,6 km lange Sweetwater Trail an, der weiter zum Long Hole und zum Sweetwater Pool führt.

Erfrischt geht es dann auf der anderen Seite der Upper Pools erst ein kleines Stück hinauf, an einem leider zugewachsenen Aussichtspunkt vorbei, und dann wieder bergab in Richtung Parkplatz. Alleine ist man hier allerdings nie, eine Menge Leute wollen diese wunderschöne Natur genießen, und schwimmen gehen steht bei den Australiern sowieso hoch im Kurs.

Pine Creek cemetery is somewhat unkept. It is notable for some immense termite mounds that can be found within the fenced off area of the cemetery. There are many graves marked only by rusting steel crosses, with no indication of date or name. There are no paths and graves are all over the place instead of being in rows.

6) Bukbukluk Lookout im Kakada NP zum sunset (wenige Kilometer nach entrance): 200 Meter Walk zum Lookout, nicht großartig, aber ganz okay. Ca. 1h ab Pine Creek bzw. 20km ab Mary River Roadhouse (danach Entrance to Kakada NP)

Danach gibt es mehrere Varianten:

Programm A (Abenteuer): abhängig vor allem auch davon, was offen/gesperrt ist

1) Gunlom Falls: zumindest 2 Stunden Fahrt ab Yellow Waters einrechnen, gravel road über 30km ca. 45min, großer Pool at the base, walk zum upper pool ist ca. 500 Meter und dauert nur ca. 20minCheck road conditions: derzeit ist die Straße gesperrt!

Abfahrt Yellow Waters 9:30 Uhr, Ankunft Gunlom 11:30 Uhr, Abfahrt Gunlom 13:30 Uhr, somit ca. um 15:30 Uhr retour in Yellow Waters

Von Yellow Waters kommend zweigt kurz vor der südlichen Grenze des Nationalparks eine unbefestigte Straße nach links in Richtung der höheren Sandstein-Plateaus ab. Ziel sind einige Escarpment-Walks und Rest-Areas sowie die Gunlom-Falls an Ende der Straße. Die Gegend ist ein Teil von Waterfall Creek am Upper Alligator River, dem einzigen großen tropischen Flusssystem der Welt, das komplett als Nationalpark und World Heritage Area ausgewiesen ist.

Die Zufahrt zum Wasserfall, der früher unter dem Namen UDP Falls bekannt war, ist eine staubige Gravel-Road, nur an einigen Furten asphaltiert und größtenteils mit rotem Staub bedeckt. Etwa 34 Kilometer muss man fahren, um nach Gunlom zu kommen. Unterwegs müssen einige - in der Trockenzeit harmlose - Bäche überquert werden. Eine Furt sieht man auf dem rechten Foto. Offiziell ist es eine Allradstrecke, aber uns sind auch normale Autos entgegengekommen.

Sinnvoll ist das nicht, denn einige Teile der Streck waren doch etwas brenzlig, wenn man nicht über genügend Bodenfreiheit verfügt. Die Bäche hatten am Ende der Regenzeit recht tiefe Löcher und Risse in einige der Furten gerissen - flood damage. Da könnte man sich an den scharkantigen Felsen schnell die Ölwanne oder den Tank aufreissen...

Am Ende der Strecke fährt man parallel zum Flusslauf, dessen Ufer mit hohem Bambus bewachsen ist. Nachdem man ein Tor passiert hat ist die Straße dann plötzlich alphaltiert und endet auf eienm großen Parkplatz. Insgesamt waren wir eine gute Dreiviertelstunde unterwegs.

Neben dem Parkplatz gibt es eine hübsche Picknickwiese direkt vor dem unteren Pool der Fälle. Hier in Gunlom wurde ein Teil vom ersten Crocodile Dundee gedreht, daher ist der Ort noch bekannter geworden. Der große Pool mit Sandstrand lädt zu einem Bad ein, allerdings trifft man hier auf eine Menge Leute, von Einsamkeit keine Spur. Ausserdem ist die Krokodilfreiheit nicht zu garantieren. Der Wasserfall lag am Morgen komplett im Schatten, nur ganz oben schien ein wenig Sonne drauf. Für gute Bilder von der Felswand und den Fällen sollte man also schon deutlich vor Sonnenuntergang hier ankommen.

Auch große und kleine Busse mit Tourgruppen kommen gerne hierher, um am Picknickplatz zu frühstücken und zu baden. Leider kann man den Massen auch dann nicht entgehen, wenn man den steilen und anstrengenden Weg über Stock und Stein hinauf zum oberen Ende des Wasserfalls wählt. Man quält sich mit Bergschuhen und Fotoausrüstung eine halbe Stunde bergauf und wird dabei von durchtrainierten Jugendlichen in Badelatschen und Handtuch locker überholt - frustrierend. Auf halber Höhe git es einen Aussichtspunkt mit Blick auf den unteren Pool.

Belohnt wird man nach der ganzen Kraxelei mit einem schönen Blick in die Ebene. Es gibt hier oben noch mehrere kristallklare, kleine Pools in Stufen oberhalb der eigentlichen Fälle. Hier kann man sich ohne Krokodilgefahr erfrischen und schwimmen, bevor man sich wieder an den Abstieg macht.

2) Nourlangie Art Rock: 1,5 km loop, dauert nur ca. 30min ohne lange Stopps, viele Wandmalereien und zwei Lookouts, gegen den Uhrzeigersinn, wenn nur kurz Zeit: nur bis zur ersten Zeichnungca. 30-40 Fahrminuten ab Yellow Waters, alles asphaltiert

There's a short walk to the first art. There are stairs which could prove troubling for those less able. My recommendation would be to do the route anticlockwise if that's the case - the third stop is the finest of the artwork. My second visit to this part of the world. If you've got the energy the walk to the lookout is particularly rewarding!

Kurze Variante: Wenn man vom Parkplatz aus losgeht, kann man entweder links abbiegen (Beschilderung vorhanden) und sich auf einen ziemlich schlecht ausgebauten Rundweg zu verschiedenen Felsmalereien begeben, oder man geht den breiten Weg gleich bis zum Ende (das dauert ca. 5 Minuten) und gelangt zu der meiner Meinung nach einzig sehenswerten Felsmalerei im "Röntgenstil".

3) Anbangang Billabong: je nach Zeit entweder gleich ab Parkplatz Nawurlandja Lookout oder eigene Zufahrtsstraße (siehe Karte), 2,5 km loop (1h) um billabong (nur zur Trockenzeit – derzeit gesperrt, check!), je nach Zeit entweder loop walk oder nur kurze Picknickpause und Fotostopp.

Abundant bird life on this billabong. In the late afternoon the rocky escarpment of Nourlangie Rock reflected the setting sun. There's a lovely flat walk around the billabong. Wallabies grazing, water birds and forest birds. Magical as we had it all to ourselves

4) Nawurlandja Lookout: 300 Meter ab Parkplatz, sunset ist hier auch schön, eventuell wenn Gunlom Falls viel länger gedauert haben und dann ohnehin keine Zeit mehr für etwas anderes.

5) Ubirr Rock sunset (siehe unten)

Sunset time 18:30 UhrAllerspätestens um 17 Uhr in Noulangerie losfahren damit noch rechzeitig zum sunset am Ubirr Rock, im Notfall

I have been here a few times. There is an 8km road which cuts off the road to Nourlangie. In most instances this road is not bad. You will pass the old runway used in the opening scene used in Crocodile Dundee 2. The walk from the car park is a flat easy walk, although at times you have to cross some water. I would say though its an easy walk, but do take lots of water. The pools are well worth it, although I have been here when the water was icy cold, and at other times nice a warm. Make sure you take mosquito spray as they can be a problem. The hidden gem is about 50m past the main pool, there is a smaller pool with a waterfall and its even more stunning.

6) Bardedjilidji sandstone walk: 2,5km – ca. 1h30min, Fahrzeit ab Jabiru ca. 30min, ab Gubara ca. ca. 45min – 1h

This has to been one of Kakadu's great secrets. Bardedjilidji is near the UBIRR rock art site which is the primary reason to travel in this direction. The walk was a real surprise Stunning geology, great scenery thrown in with some rock art. Put it on your list - about two hours needed and take water.

Litchfield Nationalpark: kein Eintritt, check was offen/gesperrt ist, vor allem Fahrt ab Wangi Falls (Straße derzeit gesperrt) und 4WD trecks wenn Lust und Laune (derzeit auch gesperrt)

1) Magnetic Termite Mounds + Cathedral Termit Mound – derzeit gesperrt, check!

17km hinter dem Parkeingang (von Batchelor kommend) ist die erste Sehenswürdigkeit zu besichtigen. Die sogenannten „Magnetic Termite Mounds“ sind Termitenhügel, die von ihren Berwohnern zur Temperaturregulierung in Nord-Süd-Ausrichtung gebaut wurden. Nur ein paar Meter von dem kleinen Wanderweg entfernt befindet sich ein 6m hoher Termitenhügel (Cathedral Termite Mound).

2) Florence Falls

Viewing platform at the top, 160 Stufen bis zum Schwimmareal oder via Shady Creek Walk (Stufen!)Shady Creek Walk (from Florence Falls) is an easy 1km walk one way (30mins duration).

Florence Falls is a double-plunge waterfall leading to a popular swimming hole. There is a steep staircase down to the pools passing through a lovely viewing point, but it’s not to strenuous. Otherwise you can take the walk down to the falls from the car park via Shady Creek track. We didn’t get to do it, but it’s meant to be very pretty. And you can walk between Florence Falls and Buley Rockholes.

Take the easy 3 minute walk from the car park to the lookout to survey the gorge and excellent views of Florence Falls. Note the contrast between the wet monsoon forest and the dry sandstone plateau. Or stretch your legs by following the gorge rim walk down the stairs to the valley floor. A seat at the halfway mark gives you a chance for a breather and a photo. Continue on to the plunge pool for a refreshing dip year-round. The Shady Creek walk will loop you back, along a stream and through the rainforest-filled gorge, then through the woodlands back to Florence Creek. Bring a picnic and stop here for a break, complete with the sound of the creek bubbling past. It's then just a short stroll to the car park.

3) Buley Rockhole (je nach Zeit und Lust entweder mit Auto hin oder walk von Florence Falls)

Folgt man der Straße erneute 6km, so gelangt man zu einer Abzweigung, die nach weiteren 2km zum Buley Rockhole und seinen Süßwasserpools führt. Die beliebten Kaskaden laden bei den tropischen Temperaturen geradewegs zum Baden ein und sind daher auch eine sehr gut besuchte Attraktion im Litchfield National Park. Nach anschließenden 3km auf der Straße oder einer 1,6km langen Wanderung (30-45min) entlang des Florence Creek trifft man auf die hübschen Florence Falls mit einem großen Wasserbecken. Vom Florence Falls Parkplatz verläuft ein kürzerer Weg hinab zum Wasserfall (ca. 10min). Zurück auf der Hauptstraße hat man nach den nächsten 4km die Möglichkeit, Richtung Süd-Westen abzubiegen. Dieser 4WD-Track endet schließlich an der markanten Sandsteinformation Lost City, wo es sich hervorragend wandern lässt.

Buley Rockhole: Buley Rockhole is a long series of cascading plunge pools and it rivals Wangi falls as the most popular spot in the Park. Can get crowded but the numbers are cleverly managed by the available parking. Signs advise "if the car park is full please come back later. A walking trail from Buley Rockhole follows Florence Creek to the top of the escarpment and on to Florence Falls. The walk is 3.2km return and will take 1 hr excluding a swim. An easier way on a hot day is to drive.

The Florence Creek Walk is 3km one way. You could of course drive instead. Seems most people do because we didn't see a soul until we got to the Buley Rockholes. What we saw instead were millions of wildflowers... Litchfield National Park is beautiful in May... The Rockholes are a series of rapids, small waterfalls and small pools. Not as photogenic as other Litchfield falls, but much more fun, especially for kids. Rock slides, ledges to jump off, whirlpools and spas... You have to keep walking up the side of the creek until you find a nice spot to pull up. Not necessarily easy, this one is popular, too... And it has a campground... What we did instead was walk back towards Florence Falls. There are several more sets of rapids along the creek...

5) Tolmer Falls:

Von der Abbiegung zur Lost City sind es erneute 14km auf der Litchfield Park Road, bis man die Straße zu den Tolmer Falls erreicht. An diesem Wasserfall ist das Baden jedoch nicht gestattet. Ein 20-minütiger Wanderweg verläuft vom Parkplatz bis hin zu einer Plattform, die eine sehr gute Aussicht auf die Landschaft des Litchfield National Park sowie auf die Tolmer Falls bietet.

Tolmer Falls : Tolmer Falls can be seen from a specially constructed lookout easily accessible from the main road. Set amongst imposing red cliffs, the falls feature caves with hundreds of bats. To help protect these colonies, access to the falls and gorge itself is closed. There is however a 1.5 km walking loop that includes some attractive rock pools at the top of the falls. You are not permitted to swim in the pools directly behind the falls but those further back up the creek are fine.

It's only a very short walk from the car park to the viewing platform above the falls, on a concrete path. But there is also an alternative route through the sandstone country along Tolmer Creek, which I really enjoyed. Only if you actually walk along the edge of the escarpment will you realise that you don't see that much from the viewing platform. Tolmer Creek has etched a very deep and narrow gorge into the Litchfield plateau, it's a striking scenery. There are a whole series of falls, but only the last one is visible from the platform.

6) Wangi Falls: walk ist 1,6km lang

Folgt man der Hauptstraße nun weitere 7km, so gelangt man zur nächsten Hauptattraktion des Parks, den Wangi Falls mit Süßwasserpool zum Schwimmen.

Wangi Falls : Wangi Falls is arguably the most popular site in the Park and at times can get very crowded. It features a large natural pool created by a tall waterfall, cascading over red cliffs. Trees and fresh lawns fringe the entry to the plunge pool and is a great spot for a picnic. Wangi also offers a picturesque walking trail which leads from one side of the pool to the other via the top of the falls. This walk has won national awards for its design concept and includes a boardwalk, carefully constructed steps, and platforms to give visitors the best views. Despite signs warning of the danger, a number of swimmers have recently perished at Wangi. High volumes of water over the falls cause an undercurrent which can pull swimmers under.

Wenn Zeit und Lust eventuell zusätzlich:Tjaetaba Falls

Believe it or not, we saw nobody at Greenant Creek. A welcome change... The reason, and I'm guessing here, is that there is only one way to see the Tjaetaba Falls: walk the whole distance. There is no concreted shortcut to a viewing platform here... The walk is neither long nor difficult, 2.7km return. But I guess most visitors to Litchfield National Park are in a bit of a rush, as usual, and since swimming isn't allowed here anyway they don't bother. In my eyes this was by far the most beautiful walk on our first day at Litchfield. I have never seen a veritable forest of palm trees like this one. Thousands and thousands of palm trees, the slender trunks so tall that you get neck strain looking at the tops. The palm tree forest is so dense that hardly any light penetrates to the bottom. The walk follows the creek, and the palm forest turns into monsoonal forest, and then opens up as you slowly climb up the slope of the Tabletop Range. Don't forget to turn around every now and then to admire the scenery! At the top you can have a short breather at the Tjaetaba Falls and then continue to the plunge pools further upstream. They look very inviting, so remember that swimming isn't allowed (it's a sacred site).

Lost City (4WD): derzeit gesperrt, Straße ist relativ schlechtSandy Creek (4WD): derzeit gesperrt, recht langer walk zum pool (über 3km), daher eher nicht

Mit einem 4WD ist es möglich, sich etwas von den touristischen Highlights des Litchfield National Park zu entfernen und auf dem Reynolds River Track Richtung Süden zu fahren. Auf dieser Strecke kann man die Ruinen des Blyth Homestead, die meist menschenleeren Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) mit ihrem Süßwasserpool sowie die ebenfalls einsamen Surprise Creek Falls besichtigen.

Wenn möglich: via Litchfield Park Road (24km dirt road) to Berry SpringsStraße derzeit gesperrt – check:Fotostopps am Weg: vor allem Walker creek Bamboo Creek Tin Mine & Walker Creek : Until the early 1950s, the park was site of several tin and copper mines and relics of this mining era can be seen at Bamboo Creek Tin Mine. The wide variety of remains which survive are in good condition. Allow: 1/2 an hour. From Walker Creek carpark you access a series of swimming holes that are usually uncrowded. Ist aber recht weit zum Gehen, daher nur wenn Zeit! Am besten: campsite 6

Sonst Strecke retour über Highway Nr. 1 (2h bis Berry Springs), 2h30 bis Mindil Beach

Wenn Zeit und Lust: Berry Springs Nature Reserve (wird sich nicht ausgehen, nur als Alternative sollte Litchfield vieles gesperrt sein, offen bis 18:30 Uhr, derzeit sind die Pools auch gesperrt – check!

Weitere Alternative zu Litchfield: Territory Wildlife Park (8:30 – 17 Uhr, AUD 32,- p.p.), Crocodile jumping cruise (siehe oben)

The street market is not only open at night, during the day (usually afternoon), shops will open their business and goes on into the night to become the night market. I have to say though, if u want to experience both setting, go in the late afternoon, walk around and check out the musuem, temples (best time for photos and check out details of the architecture) and then enjoy the night market during dusk.

Chinatown Night Market, located on Pagoda, Trengganu and Sago streets, offers a unique night time shopping experience. Located within Chinatown’s old world shop houses you'll find a myriad of goods – opera masks, ornaments, clothing and accessories and much, much more. Treat yourself to some of the local finger food stalls on Trengganu Street and enjoy traditional and modern dance performances on offer. We visited on a weekday entering via Block 1G. The entry was a little inauspicious - between some shops but signed - only to find the machine to pay by Ez-Link card was not working. A man in a nearby office took our entrance fee ($5 per person), gave us a handwritten receipt and pointed us to the lifts. It was great on top and not at all crowded. We walked from one end to the other looking at the different views but it is impossible to take photographs without getting the railings in as there are two rows of railings about 1.5m apart. When we tried to exit through the turnstile gates of block 1A they would not move. Fortunately, a resident on the roof garden phoned the office and they released the gate for us. So make sure you find out how to get out before you go in!

8) Reflections at Keppel Bay (Fotostopp): nur wenn Zeit, am besten über Keppel Bay Drive zur Marina, dort sollte recht gute Sicht sein, eventuell auch bis Keppel Island

After having fun all day at many attractions of Sentosa Island, and The Wings of Time Show has finished, we took monorail baik to Waterfront Station and walk a bit to the venue of Crane Dance Show.It's free show. Starts at 9 pm. You can choose whereever you want to sit. My kids love the show as the two "bird" crane did amazing lights, music and movements performance.
