Der „ring of fire“ ist ein Vulkangürtel, der den Pazifischen Ozean

umringt; er ist Abbild unvergleichlicher Naturgewalten. Eine Parallele?

Durchaus. Zwar wurde dieses in Form und Dimension einzigartige

Meisterwerk von Menschenhand erschaffen und wird anstelle von Lava

von modernster LED-Technik gespeist – in punkto visueller Wucht steht

dieser „Feuerring“ aus Glas und Aluminium seinem natürlichen Pendant

aber in nichts nach.

Mit RING OF FIRE wurde eine Leuchte von schier beispielloser Präsenz

erschaffen. Der Leuchtkörper aus mundgeblasenem, seidenmattem

Opalglas demonstriert Handwerkskunst in Perfektion, der tragende

Ring aus eloxiertem Aluminium lässt Glas und Licht größtmöglichen

Wirkungsraum. In Verbindung mit fortschrittlichster LED-Technik

wird RING OF FIRE zu einem ästhetisch kostbaren, hocheffizienten

und nachhaltigen Gestaltungselement. Ihr natürlich weiches, fast

sinnliches, homogenes Licht wird selbst höchsten Ansprüchen in

der Architektur sowie in Heil- und Pflegeeinrichtungen gerecht. Dank

integrierter Dimmbarkeit lässt sich nahezu jede gewünschte räumliche

Lichtsituation realisieren. Die 3-Punkt Stahlseilabhängung der Leuchte

ist stufenlos höhenverstellbar, individuelle Sonderlängen fertigen wir auf

Wunsch.

The “ring of fire” is a volcano belt that surrounds the Pacific Ocean; it

is an image of the incomparable forces of nature. A parallel? Definitely.

Indeed this handmade masterpiece is fed by the latest LED technology

instead of lava – in terms of dimension, shape and power this RING OF

FIRE, which is constructed of glass and aluminium, seems amazingly

similar to its natural counterpart.

Our RING OF FIRE luminaire creates a presence that can only be

described as being in a class of its own. The diffuser is made of superbly

hand-blown, satin finished opal glass, while the supporting ring is made

of anodized aluminium – thus maximizing the effect of the luminaire’s

glass and light. By virtue of its advanced LED technology, our RING

OF FIRE luminaires are a durable, highly efficient and aesthetically

pleasing lighting implement. Their naturally soft, practically sensual

and homogeneous light meets exacting architectural standards and is

ideal for nursing homes and other healthcare facilities. Their integrated

dimming function allows for the desired lighting for just about any

space to be achieved. The luminaire’s three point steel suspension

cable allows for stepless height adjustment; customized lengths are

available by special order.

Eine Venezianische Legende

Die venezianische Glasmacherkunst gilt bis heute als legendär. Pioniere

dieses Handwerks, wie das weltberühmte Unternehmen Ferro aus

Murano, bewahren diese Tradition achtsam über viele Generationen

hinweg und teilen ihr Know-how nur mit viel Bedacht. Die Zusammenarbeit

von Altmeister Guido Ferro und dem arrivierten Leuchtendesigner Helmut

Heinrich aus dem Hause RZB vereint die venezianische Glasmacherkunst

mit dem hohen Design- und Technologieanspruch von RZB; sie ist

länderübergreifende Wertschätzung und Synergie zugleich. Das Ergebnis

ist eine Liaison aus Glas und Licht, die sich ohne Übertreibung als

epochales Werk bezeichnen lässt.

Mehr als 700 Jahre Können, Brauchtum und Leidenschaft „a la Ferro“

machen jede der mundgeblasenen Glasscheiben zu einem ergreifend

schönen Einzelstück. Jeder Millimeter dieses „schwebenden“ Kreises

ist durchdrungen von Licht; die filigrane, fast verspielte Zeichnung des

Muranoglases wird in der schlichten Ummantelung aus Aluminium auf

faszinierende Weise zum Leben erweckt. Großes Gestaltungsgeschick,

über Jahrzehnte perfektioniertes Konstruktionswissen und wegweisende

LED-Technologie waren notwendig, um eine derart gleichmäßige

Lichtlenkung und Leuchtdichte zu erwirken. Güte und Substanz der RING

OF FIRE FerroMurano wären damit rational erklärt - nicht aber ihre nahezu

Venice Legend

The venetian art of glassmaking is considered legendary to this day.

Pioneers of this craft, like the world famous company Ferro from Murano,

have been keeping this tradition carefully over many generations and share

their know-how advisedly selected. The cooperation of the old master

Guido Ferro and the established luminaire-designer Helmut Heinrich

from RZB unite the venetian art of glassmaking and the high standards

in design and technology of RZB; it is cross-border appreciation and

synergy at the same time. The result is a liaison between glass and light

that definitely can be regarded as epic work.

More than 700 years of craftsmanship, tradition and passion “a la

Ferro” make each of the hand-blown glass panels a touchingly beautiful

individual item. Each millimetre of this “levitating” circle is steeped in light;

the seamless, almost playful colouring of the Murano glass is brought to

live in a fascinating way. Great designing skills, construction expertise that

has been perfected over decades and pathbreaking LED technology were

required to create such even light control and luminance. Through this,

the quality and substance of RING OF FIRE FerroMurano are rationally

explained - but not its almost magic aesthetics. It remains a secret.

RING OF FIRE: MAKING OF… Leidenschaft für Unikate aus Glas

Die Herstellung des Glasrings der RING OF FIRE erfolgt in einer

renommierten Glasmanufaktur. Der Ring entsteht aus mundge-

blasenem Dreischichtglas. Das bedeutet, die erste Schicht besteht aus

Klarglas, die zweite aus Opalglas und die dritte wieder aus Klarglas.

Die mittlere, empfindliche Opalglasschicht wird durch die äußeren

beiden Klarglasschichten eingeschlossen und so vor Glasbruch

geschützt.

Der Glasmacher entnimmt dazu mit seiner Glaspfeife das etwa

1.200 Grad heiße Glas aus den jeweiligen Schmelzen, die 365 Tage

im Jahr, 24 Stunden am Tag kontinuierlich in Betrieb gehalten werden

müssen, um die Glasmasse nicht erstarren zu lassen.

Die 16 kg schwere Glasmasse, der sogenannte Külbel, wird

vom Glasmacher durch Blasen und Drehen der Pfeife zu einem

Ballon geformt. Dieser wird dann in die speziell für den Ring

angefertigte Form geblasen. Erste Prototypen entstehen zunächst in

einer Holzform. Die Versuchsform für den RING OF FIRE wurde aus

einem Buchenstamm von etwa einem Meter Durchmesser gefertigt.

Später entsteht der Ring in einer Metallform, da in der Holzform nur

wenige Musterstücke geformt werden können, bis diese trotz ständiger

Benetzung mit Wasser schließlich ausbrennt. Das Wässern verhindert

ein Schwinden des Holzes und sorgt für die gleichbleibende Form des

Prototyps.

Gleichzeitig bildet der feine Wasserfilm eine natürliche Trennschicht

zwischen Glas und Holz, die in der Metallform später ein Schmiermittel

übernimmt. Durch die jahrelange Erfahrung mit dem Werkstoff Glas

und die hohe Fachkompetenz des beteiligten Designers, Konstrukteurs

und der Glasmacher waren bei dem RING OF FIRE nur fünf Versuche

erforderlich, bis das endgültige Produkt in Serie gehen konnte.

Durch die unterschiedlichen Ausdehnungskoeffizienten der Glä ser be-

nötigt der etwa 330 Grad heiße Rohling nun noch etwa 24 Stunden für

die Temperung, bei schnellerer Abkühlung würde das Glas zerspringen.

Nach der Temperung befinden sich am Rohling herstellungsbedingt

noch die sogenannten Kappen, die mittels einer feinen Diamantsäge

abgeschnitten werden. In einem Ätzbad erhält der Ring dann sein letztes

Finish. Das Ätzbad bewirkt eine Mattierung der äußeren Klarglasschicht,

wodurch die Wertigkeit der Leuchte in Haptik und Erscheinungsbild

zusätzlich unterstrichen wird. Abschließend wird jeder Glasring

genauestens auf Maßhaltigkeit, Qualität, Belastbarkeit und Stabilität

geprüft.

Besonderes Merkmal stellen die gelegentlich auftretenden, kleinen

tolerierten Lufteinschlüsse im Glas dar, die auf die individuelle hand-

werkliche Fertigung des Glasrings hinweisen.

Erst dadurch wird jeder RING OF FIRE zum Unikat.


RING OF FIRE: luminaires of glass - how they’re made

RING OF FIRE glass rings are made by a prominent glass company.

The ring is made of mouth-blown three-layer glass comprising a layer of

opal glass sandwiched between layers of transparent glass.

This structure protects the fragile opal glass from breakage. In this

process, using a blowpipe the glassblower removes 1,200 °C glass

from the glass furnace, which must be kept in operation 24 / 7 year

round in order to be cost effective.

The glassblower then forms the gob (the 16 kg heavy molten glass) by

blowing into the blowpipe and rotating it, to prevent solidification of the

molten glass. This element is then blown further in a special ring mould.

The initial prototypes are normally made in a wood mold. For RING OF

FIRE, this was a Beech form that was around one meter in diameter.

This form was then replaced by a metal form, as the wooden mould can

only be used for a few luminaires until it finally burns up, despite being

kept continuously wet.

The water prevents the wood from disappearing and allows for

prototypes with a consistent form. At the same time, the thin film of

water creates a natural barrier layer between the glass and wood –

a function performed by lubricant in the metal form.

Thanks to RZB’s extensive experience with glass and the outstanding

skills of the RING OF FIRE team (designer, manufacturer and

glassblower), it only took five attempts to come up with a marketable

product.

Owing to the differing expansion coefficients of the glass used, it takes

another 24 hours or so for the around 330 °C blank to be tempered;

more rapid cooling would cause the glass to explode. Once the

tempering process has been completed, the caps used for the glass-

blowing phase are sliced off using a diamond saw.

The ring is then finished in an etching bath, which deposits a matt

surface on the outer transparent-glass layer. This underscores the

magnificent quality of the light produced by RING OF FIRE luminaires.

In a final step, each glass ring is carefully inspected for dimensional

conformance, quality, sturdiness and stability.

The minute air inlets here and there in the glass are a very special

feature of RZB’s RING OF FIRE luminaires, attesting as they do to the

individual, handcrafted quality of these products.

These various steps ensure that each RING OF FIRE luminaire is a

unique, mouth-blown glass object.
