Dear young rheumatologists and researchers in rheumatology,

We are delighted to present you with a new issue

of EMEUNEWS to summarize the activities of

EMEUNET over the past year.

The EMEUNET Working Group represents the

EMEUNET Community, undertakes the

organisational role, and is divided among 7

Subgroups to cover the wide aims of EMEUNET.

From education to peer mentoring, from country

liaison to social media, EMEUNET Subgroups

ensure the growth of the EMEUNET community

and promote interaction and networking among

members.

If you would like to join the EMEUNET Working

Group and be actively involved in the Subgroups’

activities keep an eye on emails from EMEUNET

and do not miss next call for applications! If you

have already applied but were not selected, this

does not preclude you from applying again the

following year. And while you are a regular

EMEUNET member your contributions to

EMEUNET are also very welcome. Be pro-active

and come up with an idea for a project to be

undertaken within EMEUNET. Send us your idea,

it will be highly appreciated, and you can be part

of the implementation.

If this is your first contact with EMEUNET, we

invite you to explore more and join us via our

website (http://emeunet.eular.org). If you are

already part of our community, we kindly remind

you that sharing is caring. Spread the word about

our activities and work and help us reach more

young rheumatologists and researchers.

We hope that you enjoy reading this issue of the

Newsletter and would be happy to receive any

comments or contributions for future issues.

One more year has passed, full of EMEUNET activities and in which EMEUNET substantially further grew! With this

newsletter, we are delighted to summarize some of our key activities and achievements. EMEUNET started in 2009 and

since then we have had the privilege of seeing it grow and become a more established group. The number of young

rheumatologists and researchers becoming EMEUNET members continues to grow and, more importantly, so does the

number of young rheumatologists/researchers that we reach when disseminating our news and activities. All ‘existing’

activities remain ongoing, with new ones continually added. This is done in an attempt to meet the needs of young

rheumatologists and researchers, to bring them together and ultimately to promote education and foster research

collaborations in rheumatology. All these ongoing activities translate to a substantial amount of work for the fantastic

Working Group members that we have and to whom we, Steering Committee, are extremely thankful. It always gives us

pleasure to look back and see an important amount of work being done and milestones achieved. We hope to now look

forward and ensure that at least as much will continue to be done and hopefully more and better. EMEUNET is willing to

engage in more relevant projects to young rheumatologists and researchers and, especially, to receiving new ideas from our

members. Please do not be shy and propose your ideas to us; you can even get involved in the suggested project(s). We

hope that EMEUNET will continue to be embraced by the young rheumatology community and more and more young

rheumatologists and researchers will become involved in rheumatology education, research and EULAR. Ultimately, we trust

that this will make EMEUNET a successful and influential resource that fosters new and long-term collaborative endeavours,

and reassures that excellence in European rheumatology and EULAR is maintained.

Sofia Ramiro, Elena Nikiphorou and Anna Moltó

Elena is a clinical researcher within the

Academic Rheumatology Department

of King's College London and a

consultant rheumatologist at the

Whittington Hospital, UK. Her main

research interests focus on clinical

outcomes and multimorbidity of

rheumatoid arthritis and

spondyloarthritis. She has undertaken

her MD (epidemiological) Research on

outcomes of structural damage in

Rheumatoid Arthritis at University

College London, where she also

completed her medical studies and BSc

in Physiology (First Class Honours).

Elena is currently the Chair- Elect for

EMEUNET.

Social Media presence impacts visibility of EMEUNET and

rheumatology related topics

The different information channels of EMEUNET, the website, Facebook,

Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube provide all the information about EMEUNET

and rheumatology related issues.

EMEUNET WEBSITE (http://emeunet.eular.org)

Our website (89,000 visits, 243,000 page views since June 2016) is online

since June 2012 and remains the cornerstone for providing information for

rheumatologists and rheumatology focused researchers, providing not only a

large assembly of links to several tools and related websites but also an

archive of all newsletters from EMEUNET, current and previous job adverts,

courses, bursaries and several initiatives in rheumatology. Over the last year

major parts of our homepage have been renewed and provide an even more

user friendly experience. One of the most popular parts of our homepage is

the links section, with 37,000 visits and 74,000 views. Another highly

frequented section is our NL archive: The top three downloaded documents

have been the ACR 2016 Highlights (1270 downloads), the EULAR 2016

highlights (1050 downloads) and the EULAR 2016 Do not Miss (860

downloads) issues. Furthermore our job section had 1700 visits and the

EULAR Centres of Excellence database, where users can find details about

specific high-quality centres throughout Europe and learn about

collaboration and working opportunities, attracted 650 visits since last June.

EMEUNET FACEBOOK PAGE (www.facebook.com/EMEUNET)

The EMEUNET Facebook page was launched in April 2014 and highlights the latest news for

the EMEUNET community and young Rheumatologists. Our Facebook page is continuing to

grow and at present we have almost 1300 likes. The announcement of our new Country Liaison

officer for Spain was one post that generated a lot of impact in the last year with over 2,500

impressions, highlighting the importance of promoting the activities of the country liaison

officers. In addition Facebook is a media to advertise upcoming conferences and courses. Our

posts relating to the Advanced Musculoskeletal Epidemiology Summer school received lots of

attention in the lead up to and during the course with over 8,000 impressions reached,

demonstrating the interest of Facebook users in live course reports via Facebook.

EMEUNET TWITTER PAGE (www.twitter.com/EMEUNET)

EMEUNET launched its Twitter page in September 2014 as a means to quickly and widely distribute

rheumatology related news and content to our members. Since its launch our Twitter page has

continuously grown and now has almost 1200 followers. In the last year our profile has gained 500

additional followers. Our twitter page is most active around conferences, where we engage with

other rheumatology professionals, share content and discuss data presented in various clinical and

basic science sessions. At EULAR 2016 our Twitter page had over 3500 visits and 28000

impressions. Similarly at ACR 2016, we had 4000 profile visits and 27000 impressions, further

emphasising the importance of Twitter in engaging with members at these large conferences.

Furthermore since Twitter is being used more and more at conferences, EMEUNET now runs a

Twitter course in the lead up to EULAR, preparing our members on how to use Twitter if they are not

familiar. This course will be launched again in May and we hope to get lots of interest and

participation as in previous years.

EMEUNET on LinkedIn Since October 2016 EMEUNET can also be

found on LinkedIn, further expanding our

reach to promote rheumatology related news.

To date EMEUNET has gathered 296

connections and is growing steadily.

EMEUNET on Youtube –

EMEUNET TUBE EMEUNET TUBE was launched in October

2016 and hosts introduction videos about our

working groups as well as educational videos.

A wider range of content is planned for the

future.

THE MENTOR-MENTEE MEETINGS

The Mentor-Mentee meetings take place every year since 2012 during

the EULAR and ACR Congresses and give mentees the opportunity to

discuss about possible career options, their research, and their

involvement in EULAR, with leaders in the field in an informal way. The

2016 meetings have been a great success and positive feedback has

been collected from mentees as well as from mentors.

THE GLOSSARY OF INSTITUTIONS

In 2016, we launched the glossary of EULAR Centres of Excellence on our

website. Currently there are 31 top research centres in Europe approved as

EULAR Centres of Excellence. The goal with the registry of EULAR Centres of

Excellence is two-fold: 1) To present first-class research centres for active

researchers; and 2) To enable the exchange of research projects. We have

compiled a list for our EMEUNET members containing the current EULAR Centres

of Excellence with information about the centres’ main focus in research, research

possibilities within the centres, and contact information. EMEUNET is now

expanding the glossary to all research/clinical centers: A call for new centres

was launched In April 2017.

Currently, there are 18 Centres with available information on the website

EMEUNET AND EDUCATION

It has been recognised that most young researchers refer to the

Internet for educational material relevant to their needs. The education

Subgroup has therefore been leading a significant overhaul of the

educational content on the EMEUNET website. This has included

access to up to date courses, statistical tools, clinical links, and much

more. The educational courses and survey sections are currently live

and accessible (watch this space for more!).

THE EMEUNET CALENDAR

EDUCATION SUBGROUP

EMEUNET AND EDUCATION

The official EMEUNET calendar is now up and running on our website

http://emeunet.eular.org/calendar.cfm

In 2016 EMEUNET launched a new initiative to have a shared calendar of events

and deadlines. We decided to use google, as it offers the advantage of allowing

synchronization with computers and mobile devices.

MAY 17

The calendar is fully

customizable and members

can decide to get notifications

by email or on the mobile

If you are an apple user, we have been informed that in some cases, possibly after a system

update), the synchronization is lost. If this happens, you will need to set again the

synchronization at this address https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect

Here you can find detailed instructions on how to synchronize apple devices with the google

calendar.

To follow this calendar and transfer it into your

calendar manager in any device (laptop, tablet,

phone), please see the instructions here.

The EMEUNET calendar has been up and running for a year, with the aim to ensure that our

members would never loose a deadline or a conference! We hope you have found it useful. If

you have any comment or suggestion please let us know by sending an email to

[email protected]

EMEUNET MEMBERS IN EULAR RECOMMENDATIONS 2016-2017

Young investigators of EMEUNET are an integral part of all task forces and committees working

on new EULAR recommendations. Participants are selected after a competitive process. One

call was launched between May 2016 and May 2017:

EULAR recommendations for diagnostic tests

- Convenor: Pierluigi Meroni

- Call March 2017

- Number of applicants: 7

- EMEUNET selected members: John Pauling and Katya Lakota

The EULAR-EMEUNET Ambassador Programme for first time attendees was established initially

in 2015 by Meghna Jani and Christian Beyer on behalf of the Education subgroup. EULAR

conference veterans from EMEUNET provided congress mentorship to people attending the

largest European rheumatology congress for the first time on how to make the most of the time,

with interests that matched the first time attendees to the conference. Participants learned how

to master the clinical and scientific EULAR programme, make the most of their time, and were

offered the chance to participate in the EMEUNET networking activities. The first 30 people who

expressed their interest were selected to participate and were matched with 6 ambassadors who

volunteered to participate. The programme was a success with lots of positive feedback from

those who had the opportunity to take part. The 2017 edition has been advertised, there are a

few spaces left, apply at http://www.emeunet.eular.org/eular_ambassador_2017.cfm

EMEUNET VISIBILITY

EMEUNET BOOTH

The EMEUNET booth has been a key meeting point for young rheumatologists to receive

information on EMEUNET and collect a printed newsletter issue. Several young rheumatologists

joined the EMEUNET community after their visit at our booth. In addition, EMEUNET certificates of

attendance to the “10 days of Twitter” initiative were collected by participants at the booth. Over

25 copies of our newsletter were distributed, together with flyers. The booth was also a point of

contact for existing members to meet each other: more than 30 young rheumatologists registered

their interest at the booth and were later contacted to join EMEUNET.

NETWORKING EVENT

EMEUNET organised a networking event to further encourage interaction among EMEUNET

members. In London we had a record participation of more than 45 members. The event started

with a ride with breath-taking views of London on the Emirates cable car, flying from the Royal

Docks to North Greenwich and continued with a boat trip from North Greenwich to the London

Eye. The evening was concluded with a dinner at a pub along the Thames river.

NETWORKING EVENT

More than 40 EMEUNET members participated to our meet-up in Washington. We had a

gathering at the Penn Social Sports bar, a truly American sports bar.

The EMEUNET Country Liaisons are a community of enthusiastic

young clinicians and researchers in rheumatology that serves as a

“bridge” between the EMEUNET Working Group and the EMEUNET

members at national level. Thus, the Country Liaison network not only

supports EMEUNET by disseminating information about ongoing

educational offers and events, but also provides valuable feedback

from the different countries. Currently, the Country Liaison network is

composed of 46 Country Liaisons, with 8 new Country Liaisons

involved during 2016.

The EMEUNET Country Liaisons meet once a year during the EULAR

Congress. At EULAR 2016 in London, 13 Country Liaisons attended

the 3rd Country Liaison Meeting, together with members of the

EMEUNET Country Liaison Subgroup. During the meeting, Trudy

McGarry (Ireland) and Anne Troldborg (Denmark) shared with us their

experience as Country Liaisons, with valuable tips and suggestions

about how to expand the EMEUNET network at national level and how

to actively engage young professionals from different countries. In

2016, EMEUNET was advertised during different meetings in 8

countries (The Netherlands, Poland, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain,

Romania and Slovenia). The EMEUNET website is included in the

websites of 7 National Societies (Portuguese, Spanish, Danish,

German, Romanian, Polish and Slovenian).

GLOBAL AFFAIRS SUBGROUP

Co-Leader:

BEYOND EMEUNET

Young PARE is a subgroup of PARE (People with

Arthritis/Rheumatism in Europe) aiming to communicate the specific

needs of young people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

After a meeting with several representatives of young PARE during the

2016 EULAR congress, a project of recommendations on eHealth

and mHealth has been launched. The idea is to define quality criteria

for Health apps in rheumatology and how patients and rheumatologists

can safely use such apps. We are currently working on developing this

idea and its methodology.

Increasing interactions with other young specialist organisations are aimed at improving

the management of our patients and at gathering our strength for better clinical and translational

research on diseases shared by our specialties. A joint dedicated meeting with EMEUNET

members, the chair of Y-ECCO (Young-European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation), the chair of

young PReS (Paediatric Rheumatology European Society) and the chair of YNP (Young

Nephrologists’ Platform) was organised by EULAR in 2016. It was a good opportunity to

exchange about our different organisations and how we could work together in the future.

A common newsletter issue describing all the different European Young Specialist

Organisations is currently under preparation with the chairs of these organisations.

A survey about inter/multidisciplinary collaboration among young specialists has been

developed by the subgroup and reviewed by the EMEUNET working group members, and is

now under review by the other young organisations. In the near future, this survey will be

disseminated through all Young Specialists Organisations to identify common objectives and

therefore develop a European-wide network of young clinicians from various fields and

specialties.
