    Preface

We are experiencing a severe pandemic. The Corona-virus has changed our way of life and it has led to an economic recession without precedent. Especially in these difficult times the insurance industry is an important partner for society and economy. More than 446 million in-surance contracts clearly demonstrate that. For their customers, the German insurers provide more than 650 million Euro of insurance benefits per day. What is more, in the event of a claim insurance companies not only pay damages but also provide direct help and assistance. And insurers use their accumulated knowledge of prevention to help reduce or eliminate risks.

As long-term investors of 1.75 trillion euros, the German insur-ance industry is also a crucial source of funding for both the private and the public sector.

For many years, the Statistical Yearbook of German Insurance has provided a wealth of information on the development of the insurance sector and its social and economic environment. We trust that the 2020 edition, especially in these times of high uncertainty, will again prove a useful and reliable source of information to contribute to a better understanding of the insurance industry among experts and the general public.
