COMMENTS

The hoard was found in a field by the labourer Christofer Landberg of Hammars. The county administration (Landskansliet) in Visby reported the find, together with three others, in a letter dated 13 January 1863. Accordingly it is not certain whether the find was made late in 1852 or early in 1863. The circumstances of discovery are not mentioned. Inquiries on the spot in 1945 (Sbr) and 1977 (MÖ) gave no reliable results. Based on the archival descriptions it has been possible to identify with certainty six of the coins in the systematic collection in KMK. A seventh coin (no.3) is pro-

bably from this hoard. An eight, fragmentary, coin has not been identified. Coin no. 1 was listed as Arab-Sasanian in 1982. The date of coin no. 7 was read by Tornberg as 802/3. However, the type was only struck in 804/5. This hoard is one of the earliest found on Gotland.
