Preliminary noteThe content of this guideline has been developed un-der thorough consideration of the requirements andrecommendations of guideline VDI 1000.
We wish to express our gratitude to all honorary con-tributors to this guideline.
All rights reserved including those of reprinting, re-production (photocopying, microcopying), storage indata processing systems, and translation, either of thefull text or of extracts. This VDI guideline can beused as a concrete project document without infringe-ment of copyright and with regard to VDI notices 1to 7. Information on this, as well as on the use in dataprocessing, may be obtained by the VDI GuidelinesDepartment at the VDI.
1 ScopeThe purpose of the guideline is, in conjunction withthe guideline VDI 3300 “Materialfluss-Untersuchun-gen (Material flow studies)”, to provide instructionsfor the calculation of the costs of a company’s inter-nal material flow (MF). “Internal” refers to all move-ments of materials between the incoming goods anddispatch departments of the company, regardless ofthe number of production plants.
The guideline focuses on the material flow costs(MFC) for products and their components. Two ap-proaches for cost registration, analysis and allocationare applied:
• the factor costs-oriented representation of theproduct MFC based on the input factors (material, personnel, capital, supplies and services), and
• the process costs-oriented representation of theproduct MFC based on the processes (develop-ment, acquisition, production, distribution, etc.).
The guideline describes procedures and decision aids(operative cost management) which can be derivedfrom them. Typical MF analysis tasks are illustratedusing simplified practical examples.
The situations described in Section 4, Section 5, andSection 8 contain generally applicable statements forcost accounting which are relevant to all forms of costanalysis. They can be applied directly to MFC analy-ses.
