Ceremony Tradition Dying Says Student alit..r,

I like to reply to Bill I.- ...dimming January grad-

ceremonies. I will be raduated in January. I also

mould very much like to go

through the ceremony but don’t especially relish the idea of wait-ing until June to do it. But can a January graduation set up and financed by a group of graduating stniors be compar-able to the ceremony in June?

don’t think so.

I know that the Administra-tion will think long and hanl on Ii.’ idea of again initiating the

January ceremonies. But they ain’ttio it this year (due to no budget tor it.: nor do I think they will do it in many years to eldtle. My reasons: 1. Lack of student interest. A very small pereentage it the seniors par-ticipated in the last January ceremonies. 2. Lack of faculty

SJS Should Promote Freer Views-Writer Editor:

An answer to Dr. Charles Smith’s letter of Nov. 1 on TASC ideally should include an interview with both that gentle-man and the "Authority" whom he quotes as advising him to r.’-sign as faculty adviser to this student organization. I regret that a busy program at this college precludes my undertak-ing such an approach. A general observation or two may still be in order.

The name of this organiza-tion, Towards a More Active Student Community, appeals to me, as it implies an effort to get students more involved in some community, be it local or more broadly circumscribed. Surely such an aim, if sincere, seems to be worthwhile. prima facie. One of TASC’s officers has told me that the present policy of this group includes not pass-ing resolutions nor taking stands. It brings left-wing speak-ers to the campus, presumably to offset what this officer describes as a preponderance of right-wing representatives brought to the campus last spring by other ac-tive student groups. I have sug-gested that all such groups might consider an inter-organi-

weekend, and no kidding .....-gonian quipped, -Where is San Jose?"

A myriad of fleeting impres-sions jostling again.st each other formed a blissfully chaotic week-end for these transplanted stu-

dents. Eating up the miles of road between San Jose and Eu-gene, Ore., a earaVall of vehicles tarried merrymakers past vivid splashes of autumnal foliage and snowy forests.

Arriving exhausted at various hotels and motels in Ei gene. the passengers disembarketl ml rapidly resised themselves %%Oh showers, quick naps, and a change of clothes. Gallantly they braced themselves for the seemingly hopeless game ahead. The valiant team, aided by an insurpassable band, won the game and set the pace for the whole weekend. From that point on, it was a roller coaster ride

for the gleeful students. Rapport between SJSers, as

they ran into groups of each other on the surprisingly friend-ly streets of Eugene, created a world of Spartans within the

boundaries of the Oregon city.

Traveling SJS students Rich-ard Munson, Sue Crosby, and Pat Fordiee, accompanied by your reporter, etwountered a group of band members in a Eugene restaurant. De nn is Osake. Dave cowgili, Grant

Tannehill, Dave Pugh, Stan Koehler. Dave Allen, and Randy McGaw couldn’t stop talking about a Band-Aid they lost in Redding who turned tip on a math-or bus.

Three other band members, John niggles, George Turner, and Rich Parli’ell Were Mitipliteed

Mimburger shop along the route. They turned up later,

intact. All of these fel-..--.;,ressed surprise at the

...;:coua of the game. but voiced a unanimous ’Terrific," as un-equivocal approval.

The highlight of Saturday evening was a hootenanny, com-prised mainly of SJS students, in the Colonnade Room of the Eugene Hotel.

The show started with the nunular Foothill Singers Char-lie Thomas, Lorna Fairchild, and Diane 1Puppy I Arkelian.

Featured acts were ballad singer Bob Hefner, and vivacimis Sheri Snow,

The Gruesome Twosome Al Taliaa and Gene Garrett, psy-chology majors from Oreg.m

showed the audience that SJS hadn’t exclusive rights to enter-taining folk -singing.

The Song Drivers with train whistling Bob Wanless, Bill Hall. and Mike O’Connell’: and the exhitherant Black Mountain Boys Jerry Garcia, Eric Thompson, and Dave Nelson

transformed even the &nil’ ( )1e -grin faction of the guests into a foot -stomping audience.

Stan Lipari, well-known disk -Jockey, and owner of the hoote-nanny; and manager Keith Watts, had their hands full with the responsibility of students traveling on their hits. Several of the hotels, occupied with spirited students. complimented them on their behavior. despite SJS enthusiasm.

Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity on the Oregon U. campus played host in the royal style to this busload of Spartans and folk -singers. Filled with memorable experiences and a delicious

breakfasi, the rejuvennted group departed from the fraternity

house Sunday morning and be-gan the long journey home.
