Als 1832 am Hof des Fürsten Metternich der Kocheleve Franz Sacher in Vertretung des erkrankten Küchenchefs ein Dessert für besonders anspruchsvolle Gäste kreieren sollte, war die Original Sacher-Torte geboren. Bereits einige Jahre später erfreute sie sich internationaler Beliebtheit. Auch Kaiserin Elisabeth schätzte die Torte des k. u. k. Hoflieferanten Eduard Sacher sehr. Nur die im Hause Sacher produzierte Torte darf durch ein seit 1962 verbrieftes Recht als „Original“ bezeichnet werden. Für das Gelingen einer Original Sacher-Torte sind jedoch nicht nur die

Seit 2009 wird auch eine limitierte „Artists’ Collection“ herausgegeben. Bekannte öster reichische Künstler wie Hermann Nitsch, Gustav Peichl alias „Ironimus“, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Xenia Hausner, Herbert Brandl, Arnulf Rainer, Hans Staudacher, Erwin Wurm, Heimo Zobernig, Gottfried Helnwein und Friedrich von Amerling haben exklusiv für die Sacher „Artists’ Collection“ das Holzkistchen künstlerisch veredelt. Die Original Sacher-Torten werden somit in einer streng limitierten Stückanzahl zu echten, österreichischen Kunstwerken, deren Reinerlös jedes Jahr einem anderen wohltätigen Zweck zugutekommt.

One day in 1832, the chef de cuisine at the court of Prince Metternich had fallen ill just when high-ranking guests were expected. And so, it was up to the young apprentice cook, Franz Sacher, to create a dessert that would satisfy discerning palates – the Original Sacher-Torte was born. Within a few years it had conquered the world. Pastry lovers from all over the world treated themselves to the sweet delight from Austria. Even Empress Elisabeth could not resist the cake of Eduard Sacher, supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court. Following a legal dispute with competitors, a court ruling in 1962 stated that only the cake produced at Sacher may be called “Original”.
It is not only the perfect mixture of ingredients and the right temperature and humidity in the
bakehouse but also the exact sequence of the 34 individual steps, right up to the packaging of the cake, that accounts for its success. Each cake is packaged in an exclusive wooden box, which makes an important contribution to the image of an Original Sacher-Torte. In 2009, „The Artist’s Collection” project was initiated. Since then we have commissioned a limited edition Original Sacher-Torte with special packaging designed by a different renowned Austrian artist, such as Hermann Nitsch, Gustav Peichl alias “Ironimus“, Christian Ludwig Attersee, Xenia Hausner, Herbert Brandl, Arnulf Rainer, Hans Staudacher, Erwin Wurm, Heimo Zobernig, Gottfried Helnwein and Friedrich von Amerling, each year. Anna Sacher scharte ihre berühmten Gäste gerne um sich – selbst nachdem diese das Hotel verlassen hatten. In ihrem Boudoir im Sacher befanden sich die Porträts von Erzherzögen, Opernstars, Schauspielerinnen und Industriellen. Diese Sammlung bildete den Grundstock jener Fotogalerie, die auch heute noch im Sacher laufend ergänzt wird. Neben dem berühmten Tischtuch der Anna Sacher, welches sogar die Unterschrift des Kaisers selbst zeigt, gibt es im Sacher auch ein „ganz normales“ Gästebuch. Alles andere als „ganz normal“ jedoch sind die Einträge darin: Anna Netrebko, Caroline von Monaco, Grace Kelly, John Travolta, Peter Simonischek, José Carreras, Königin Elisabeth II. von England, Sean Connery, Tobias Moretti, Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Lewis Hamilton, Naomi Campbell, Mika, Anne Hathaway, Herbert von Karajan und viele mehr haben sich darin verewigt.
Anna Sacher enjoyed gathering her famous guests around her, even after they had left the hotel. In her boudoir at the Sacher, she hung portraits of archdukes, opera stars, actresses and industrialists. This collection formed the basis of the photo gallery that still continues to be added to. In addition to Anna Sacher’s famous tablecloth, which even bears the signature of emperor Franz Josef himself, there is also a “ordinary” guest book at the Sacher. However, the entries it contains are anything but “ordinary”: Anna Netrebko, Caroline of Monaco, Grace Kelly, John Travolta, Peter Simonischek, José Carreras, Queen Elizabeth II of England, Sean Connery, Tobias Moretti, Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Lewis Hamilton, Naomi Campbell, Mika, Anne Hathaway and Herbert von Karajan, who was a regular at the hotel, plus many others who have immortalized themselves in this historic guest book.

Eduard Sacher, Sohn von Franz Sacher und bekannt als der „vornehmste Gaumenschmeichler Wiens“, eröffnete 1876 das Hotel Sacher. Bald nach der Heirat mit Anna Fuchs, Tochter eines wohlhabenden Fleischhauers, übernahm diese aufgrund der schlechten Gesundheit ihres Mannes die Leitung. Nach Eduards Tod 1892 führte sie das Hotel Sacher alleine weiter.

SEINEN LEGENDÄREN RUF.
Vor allem um die Séparées rankten sich viele Geschichten. 40 Jahre lang lenkte Anna Sacher die Geschicke des Hotels und machte es zu einer glanzvollen Bühne für Adelige, Gesellschaft, Politik und Kunst. Auch heute wird das Hotel Sacher als eines der wenigen Luxushotels weltweit noch im Familienbetrieb geführt. Die Familie Gürtler und Familie Winkler leiten das Hotel. Die persönliche Note, mit der das Hotel neu eingerichtet wurde, macht das Sacher nach wie vor zu etwas Einzigartigem.
Eduard Sacher, son of Franz Sacher and known as the “most distinguished gourmet in Vienna”, opened the Hotel Sacher in 1876. Soon after marrying and due to her husband’s poor health, Anna Fuchs, the daughter of a wealthy butcher, took over the management. After Eduard‘s death in 1892, she continued running Hotel Sacher on her own.

Many of the amazing stories spring from the private dining rooms. For 40 years, Anna Sacher created the ambiance the ambiance of the hotel, making it a glamorous stage for aristocrats, society, politics and the arts. Even today, Hotel Sacher is one of the few luxury hotels in the world that is still family-run. Currently it is managed by the families Gürtler and Winkler. The personal touch with which the families manage the hotel and their attention to detail when redecorating the hotel keep the Sacher as unique as ever.
