ART

Art Department2008 heralded a new era for the Art department at Pretoria Boys High School, as we saw Miss Karin Bezuidenhout being appointed as the rst woman to become Head of the Art Department. We also had to say goodbye to a dearly loved colleague, Mrs Cassandra Brennan, as her husband, Mr Nick Brennan, also staff at the school, took up a research post at SASOL. We wish them both much luck in their new life together and remember them with fondness. Mr McEvoy nished his MTech degree in Fine Arts at the Tshwane University of Technology (with distinction) and held the solo exhibition for this degree requirement at the School’s Battissphere Gallery.

Our matric pupils once again did not disappoint, with a total of ten distinctions. This was the rst year that the pupils wrote their senior certi cate exams according to the new syllabus, with a new style of examination paper. The new syllabus allows for pupils to be far more interpretative in their analysis of artworks and artists, and it was exciting to see that the Boys High art department has coped well with the prescribed changes and can offer its pupils not only the facilities to adapt to the changes, but the ability to cope adequately to produce an impressive set of results. We want to wish our matrics of 2008 well for the future and congratulate them wholeheartedly on a job well done.

In 2008 the art department held its rst student art exhibition, which

was applauded on all levels by parents, teachers, pupils and the general public who came to see the show. A cross-spectrum of work, from Form 1 to Form V was curated by the art teachers and presented as such: student work of the highest calibre. We hope to raise the pro le of our Battissphere Gallery in 2009 by inviting more artists to use the facility to

exhibit their works, more student art exhibitions, and an exhibition of artworks by the art department itself.

We also continued with our outreach initiative at Masizane Primary School in Atteridgeville. This long-term project sees us visiting Masizane twice a term to repaint the murals. Signi cant progress has been made with the help of a group of ever-enthusiastic pupils who dedicatedly accompany us on these excursions and paint with great happiness and charity. The charm and manner of these Boys High boys never fails to impress all who meet them and the Boys High ethos shines through with un inching air.

2009 presents new challenges, as all new years do, some known to us, some unbeknown to us. Thank you to all involved: pupils, parents, and staff for your assistance, patience and understanding of the subject, a truly special subject, at a truly special place.

Athletics ReportThe Athletics season started rather slowly after the intense rugby commitments of the third term. The Inter-House competition and School Championships produced some wonderful athletic moments and set the pace for the short Inter-School competition period of the athletics season. Our rst Inter-School competition took place at Parktown Boys High School on Saturday 6 September 2008 and culminated with the Inter-High held at KES on Wednesday 24 September 2008.From one competition to the next the Boys High athletes improved markedly with several new records being set. A few which need special mention are:• The U16 100m Inter-House record held by

R Williams (11.3) since 1986 was broken by R Collins (10.7)

• The U16 200m Inter-House record held by R Green (23.0) since 1993 was broken by R Collins (22.9)

• The U14 Javelin school record held by F Saayman (50,00m) since 1992 was broken by A Smedsrud (51.66m)

• The U14 Javelin track record held by G van Velze (AHS) (50,09m) since 2002 was broken by A Smedsrud (51.03m)

• The U15 Javelin school record held by G Smit (55.98m) since 1992 was broken by D Jacobs (58.85m)

• The U17 Javelin school record held by A Floudiotis (63.32m) since 2002 was broken by A Jacobs (70.80m)

• The U19 Long Jump school record held by T Iraka (6.99m) since 1994 was broken by B Mothlatlhego (7.03m)

• The U16 High Jump Inter-House record held by R Wegerle (1.94m) since 1980 was broken by L Ramokgopa (1.95m)

• The U19 Triple Jump Inter-House record held by N Martin (13.45m) since 1989 was broken by B Mothlatlhego (15.03m)

• The U19 Triple Jump school record held by T Iraka (13.94m) since 1994 was broken by B Mothlatlhego (15.96m)

• The U19 Triple Jump track record held by M Enell (KES) (13.83m) since 1990 was broken by B Mothlatlhego (15.03m)

The following athletes need to be congratulated on their achievements:B Mothlatlhego was chosen to represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games where he achieved a bronze medal in the triple jump.R Collins won gold for the U16 100m at the Inter-Provincial Championships.A Jacobs won silver for his efforts in the U17 Inter-Provincial Championships for javelin.J Muchenje was selected for the U15 90m hurdles Inter-Provincial competition.

Mr Lincoln Keeton, the cross-country and middle distance coach has submitted the following statement regarding the records held by Peter Kaal.

Scenes from the Inter-House athletics meeting held on the Hill athletics track.

RTAthleticsThe oldest records of them allPeter Kaal’s U16 and U19 ‘1500m’ records which have stood since 1965 and 1966 respectively will from now on be recorded separately in The Pretorian as records for The Mile. It turns out that when the school moved away from the imperial system in 1968, Peter Kaal’s mile times were converted to metric mile equivalents to preserve his achievements. It is better felt that his records should remain as for The Mile and not the 1500m.

I’ll explain by giving some background. In 1976 the International Amateur Athletics Federation decided to recognise only the world records for metric distances, but it made an exception for the mile – the records of which are ercely challenged to this day. The reason most probably was that the race was romantically appreciated as a remnant of the past. Also, the mile (now the 1500m race) has always been the blue riband event of athletics: in rowing for instance, the blue riband event is the Men’s Eights raced over 2000 metres; in swimming it’s the 100 and 200 metres freestyle; in kayaking and canoeing it’s the men’s K1 1000 metres; in cycling it’s the Tour de France, and so forth.

So it has been decided to retain not only Kaal’s original mile records but the race as well. In addition, his record of 4:20.5 for the mile will be saved and further legitimised in the U17 age group which has been in effect since 1993. Boys who wish to set or

challenge the school’s mile records must do so in competition over the correct distance (1 609.344 metres).

According to our archives, the rightful U16 1500m school record holder is Tumi Malope who set the record at 4:14.04 in 2005, and the rightful U19 school record holder is G Page who set the record at 4:14.5 in 1987.

As from 2009 an event known as the PETER KAAL MILE will be run as the last event of the Inter-House Athletics competition and will include the U16, U17 and U19 athletes.

Much appreciation is extended to coaching staff who kept athletics going despite some very trying times.

The Athletics Captain, Boipelo Motlhatlhego and his deputy, Tumiso Lebelo, are to be commended for their outstanding athletic performances and tenacious leadership qualities throughout the season.

To all the athletes who have in a sense “run their last race” for Boys High, thank you very much for your loyalty and dedication throughout the years and God bless you in your futures. To those athletes remaining, another season awaits you with challenges of its own.

RTBasketball

The season began on a low as we had a shortage of players, but we eventually managed to eld a fairly decent team. Unfortunately, the rst term was very poor in terms of results as we won only one out of ve games, narrowly losing to St Albans and KES.

The fourth term was by far our most successful in terms of both results and the growth of players. We elded a formidable team, winning six out of the seven games we played. We lost narrowly, by two points, to a St Albans team we de nitely should have beaten! The boys can attest to that!

The boys played their hearts out week in and week out and I would like to thank them all for their participation. Under the leadership of Mbavhalelo Masakona, we managed to improve immensely with regard to results and the players’ overall performances. This team is providing a good feeder base to the First Team and I am certain that some of the players will play a very important role next year.

Mothibedi RantloaneCoach

The year started with a twelve man strong 1st Team. It was a very young but passionate group of boys. These boys lived, slept and breathed basketball. Initially, it seemed that the 1st Team, with only two matric players, was likely to face a challenging year. To the contrary, the boys accepted the challenge and showed a maturity and understanding of the game beyond their years. The team produced results of which to be proud and these will feature in the basketball history books for years to come.

2008 started off on a high with the team participating in the RBL league (Johannesburg league). They won 10 out of 13 games, which is a 77% win ratio. The most impressive result was the win against St Peters with an astounding 204-5 points. Mention must be made of Athi Yenana, the 2008 captain, for being chosen as an All Star player at the American International School Tournament.

With all the preparation of the rst term behind them, the team prepared for the annual Durban High School Basketball Tournament. This is the largest and most prestigious high school basketball tournament in South Africa. Boys High played in the A division and nished tenth overall. This was a very good performance. The boys learned a lot tactically and they gained valuable experience but more importantly, a sense of team spirit was developed.

The next challenge was the Pretoria league. Unfortunately, Boys High lost the rst game to Rosina but went on to win all the remaining games and quali ed for the semi- nal against St Albans. The match was a very close one with Boys High losing

the game in the last minute to an older and more experienced St Albans team. Boys High nished third behind Rosina and St Albans respectively.

The third term saw the team play in a tournament hosted by the Glen High School. Boys High also played against a team from Rustenburg (whom they beat convincingly) as well as in a series of friendly matches.

In the fourth term, the First Team showed that they meant business and went on to win all seven of their games. These included wins against our biggest rivals KES, St Albans and St Benedicts.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the boys for all their hard work, patience and tireless dedication throughout the year. Thanks must also go to Mr Petje for his contribution as MIC of Basketball and Tibe Rantloane, my assistant coach, for his invaluable input, loyalty and dedication. The following boys are to be congratulated on their achievements: Bulelani Ntsaluba for being the most improved U19 player; Fhumulani Maboho for the best defensive U19 player of the year and Brian Tsabadi for the U19 Most Valuable Player of the year, an All Star in the Pretoria league and being made the 1st Team Captain for 2009.

A year of hard work, consistent training and a whole lot of heart has paid off. It has encouraged the 1st Team to strive for excellence and emerge as a dominant force to be reckoned with in South African Schools’ basketball.

1st Team Basketball

U14A Basketball Johannesburg league (First Term)The 2008 season for the PBHS Under 14A basketball team started off on a shaky note with three straight losses. Included in these losses was a loss against arch-rivals, KES. But after both team and coach found their footing, the beginnings of a near perfect season began to emerge. We registered our rst win against Jeppe by a modest three points but as the saying goes “a win is a win”. From that victory onwards we never looked back, with wins against St Johns and long-term Pretoria derby opponents, St Albans.

Pretoria league (Second Term)What can I say? It should be Boys High’s name on that trophy, but due to some unfortunate misunderstandings, we lost points and thus lost out on playing in the nal. I have no doubt that, had we reached the nal, we would have won it, but despite not qualifying, one of the players (Zinhle Twala)

was selected as a member of the Pretoria League All Star Team.

Johannesburg league (Fourth Term)The Johannesburg league in the Fourth term was by far the best out of the three terms. The boys registered wins against our opponents and one of these victories included a win against KES to whom they had lost earlier in the year. I could not have been more proud of the team at that point. We closed off the season with a game against St Albans which we won convincingly.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to coach these boys this year and I look forward to another memorable season next year with greater challenges and learning opportunities. Thank you!

RTClimbing2008 was a year lled with many joys but many sorrows too. We started off with Mr Black taking six of our best climbers to the Rory Lowther Climbing competition held at Swinburne in February, where the boys had to climb in pairs and points were allocated for the number and dif culty of the climbs achieved. The teams consisted of Luke Harrison (F5) with Wesley Black (F4), Dries Nieuwoudt (F5) with Keegan Black (F1) and Shaun Cottrell (F4) with Joshua Nel (F3). The boys did themselves proud with the overall School Trophy being won by PBHS and Wesley and Luke winning the School team award. Dries and Shaun won the fun obstacle race trophy while Dries won the personality award.

We then had a number of outings to Chospile crags near Hartebeespoort Dam and to crags near the dam wall of the Bronkhorstspruit dam. During these outings Gert Pietersen, DJ le Roux and Sheldon Crabtree achieved their Half Colour climbs and Wesley completed his Full Colour climbs.

A number of our boys entered the Bouldering competition held at the Barn, out on Lynnwood Road, over six Monday evenings. One of the Mondays fell in the school holidays so it was arranged that Wesley and Keegan Black and Shaun Cottrell travel with Rob and Michael Harrison to Rustenburg and spend a few days climbing in the Magaliesberg. Mr Rob Harrison, an old boy of the school, was driving them when a truck skidded across the road and collided with them, killing Rob, Michael, Shaun and Keegan instantly. Wesley and Luke were seriously injured and taken to hospital. It took a number of months before they were able to climb again and enjoy it. Although both Luke and Wesley had accumulated enough points to compete in the Bouldering nal held at Swinburne, they chose not to go due to injuries and a lack of motivation.

A schools’ Bouldering competition was held in Johannesburg during September. Our boys did extremely well and won both the junior and senior sections. DJ le Roux came rst in the juniors and Wesley Black won the seniors.

The commitment and camaraderie of the boys during the year has been incredible and they have worked hard and with enthusiasm. We have had, on average, between 40 and 50 boys involved with climbing each term. Due to the demand, the bouldering wall has been extended to accommodate the increased number of boys.

We held our rst Inter-House Climbing competition for which,an old boy, Paul Bruyere, set the routes. It gave the sport new exposure and was enjoyed by all. Solomon House won the senior section and Town House won the junior section.

I would like to thank the boys and their families

for their incredible support during our time of loss. They made it so much easier for me to get back there and continue with the climbing. A plaque has been placed in the gym next to the bouldering wall in memory of the three boys we lost in that fatal accident in April. It reads as follows:Shaun Cottrell – Keegan Black – Michael HarrisonYou left us tragically on 7 April 2008Every time we boulder herewe will remember you.You each had a way of making uslook and learn and do,Your friendship, energy and commitmentwill always inspire usto up the level of our climbing.

Shaun had only been climbing for just over a year after being encouraged to take up the sport by Wesley, yet his energy, laughter and friendship will be missed by the boys. Keegan took up the sport in Form 1 although he had been climbing with his dad and brothers for a number of years and was always keen to encourage others. He had completed two of his Half Colours climbs and would have achieved the nal one during the year. Michael joined the climbing group in Form 1 due to the encouragement of his brother, Luke, and he had started to really excel and enjoy it. He was always full of fun and added a spark to the group. All three boys will be dearly missed by all who knew them. Their memories and contribution to the sport will live on for years to come.

It has been a busy year for cricket at PBHS. As we cater for twenty ve sides we need matches for these teams. Unfortunately all these teams cannot play on a Saturday as the opposition do not have enough teams. The only school that give us a full xture are KES and AFFIES.

So to make up for lack of xtures we entered into the Pretoria league. But unfortunately

some of the xtures were cancelled which is disappointing for the boys as playing matches representing the school is important for them.

Special mention must go to teams who throughout the season would play against opposition who are a much higher team and do very well.

Would like to congratulate the following boys who made provincial sides. For the Under 19 Titans team S.Naidoo on being selected as captain and G.van Buuren. The Under 17 Titans M.Pillans, T.Matsopola and J.P.Tlokotsi and the U15 Titans team M.Coetzee. Hope that these players have successful weeks.

The following rst team players have been

awarded colours. G.van Buuren has been awarded Honours for his cricket performance in the third and fourth term and he was also selected for the SA Schools’ side. He scored 1035 runs of which 4 × 50 and 6 × 100 with his highest score being 165runs. A well deserved award. Would like to thank the coaches for their efforts that they put into cricket at the school especially the staff who give up there time for the boys.

A thank you to everyone else who contributed to cricket at the school. It is really appreciated.

Finally to Abraham Shalang for the time he puts into the facilities at the school. A thankless task.

2nd XI CricketThe 2nd XI of 2008 had one of the most successful years in a long time. This report will include results from the matches played in the rst term as well as in the fourth term.

Dean Callanan captained the side during the rst term. The side went unbeaten for six matches and then, unfortunately, lost to KES in the last match to deny us an unbeaten season. Tumi Matsapola scored 65 against St Albans, Mauritz van Straten scored 68 against Grey College and 50 against KES whilst Dean Callanan scored 61 not out against Alberton Schools and 59 against St Stithians. Mongezi Bosch took 4/20 against Jeppe whilst Graeme Forrest took 4/41 against Af es and 5/42 against Alberton Schools.

Probably the sweetest memory from all the matches in the First Term must be the 3 run win at Af es in an exciting day-night match. Managing to score only 171 in 45 overs we were always under pressure, defending a score that was probably 30 runs light. Af es batted sensibly and got themselves into a clear, winning position, needing about 15 runs to win, with about 8 overs in hand and only ve wickets down. The demise of Af es started with a memorable re ex catch by Forrest at backward point. The main bowlers had all been bowled out and into the arena stepped a bowler of little reputation but big heart, Matsapola. Bowling dot balls and chipping in with the odd wicket the pressure became too much for Af es and the nal wicket was taken when Matsapola bowled their last batsman with Af es still three runs short. To say that we were all very excited with the result would be an understatement as it was one of those really rare sporting occasions that will stay with all involved for years to come.

Several of the matrics from the First Term withdrew from cricket in the Fourth Term to concentrate on their upcoming Final Examinations. Ryan Lance eld took over the captaincy. Being an experienced First Team cricketer in previous seasons and now making his “come-back”, I was very impressed with the way in which he took the younger players in his team under his proverbial wing and dealt with them with care and respect but with the necessary rmness. The boys learned a lot from Ryan and so did I. Once again, it was a loss to KES, AGAIN, that prevented an unbeaten season.

Mauritz van Straten scored 90 not out against Jeppe, Ryan Lance eld scored 61 against Af es, Declan Gallagher scored 87 against St Johns and 59 against

Jeppe, Tumi Matsapola scored 67 against St Johns and Graeme Murphy scored a superb 118 not out against Grey College. Mongezi Bosch took 4/40 against Af es, Tumi Matsapola took 5/15 against St Johns and Hamish Dunlop took 4/24 against St Johns.

There were two undoubted highlights of the matches played in the Fourth Term. The rst was the 149 run win over Af es. We scored 239/7 to which Af es could only reply with 90 all out. Bosch was unplayable that day, swinging the ball prodigiously at pace. In my opinion the best performance of the whole 2008 came against Grey College. Grey set us a serious target of 241 to win. Graeme Murphy played the best innings I have seen in a long time. Combining his natural attacking game with a very broad, defensive bat he got us to the target with relative ease. Losing only three wickets, chasing a big total against a more than decent Grey attack was a memorable performance indeed.

In conclusion I would like to pay tribute to every player who represented the 2nd XI this season. You were not just great on the eld but even better off the eld. The players enjoyed the camaraderie of one another and played for their school and one another in an egoless and humble way. Your tolerance of one another’s different personalities and willingness to co-operate in the interest of the team have made me very proud to be able to write this report on your behalf. Thank you for a great cricketing year.

4th Cricket TeamVery happy team after a great victory against St Charles at Michaelmas.

The 2008 cricket season took us through all the possible notions of cricket. We experienced what it was like to be on top of the world and what it felt like to hit rock bottom.

The season started with the rst loss in three years which broke down the morale of the team. We spiralled downwards and lost the next couple of games.

Slowly though, we started to gel and everyone found their place in the team. With Chris MacClements opening the batting we were assured of a solid start. He opened with the star batsman of the season, Johnny (Hammer) Enslin. Our strengthening batting line up was well backed up by good bowling. The team’s resident ogre, Keagan Schlunz, reliably made early breakthroughs. When our pace bowlers weren’t making head-way we

always had a trustworthy spinner, Dylan Richter, who fatally tempted many a batsman.

As the season progressed we grew as a team and soon losing a game was a rarity. We nished the season on top, knowing we did ourselves and the School proud.

I would sincerely like to thank Mr Badenhorst for all his time and effort. Without his help and that of Mr Prinsloo, we would not have been able to achieve the degree of success that we did.

Last, but not least, I would like to thank all the team members for their support and a memorable last season.

Thanks, boys!

Rudi van den BergCaptain

The 2008 season for the 4th Cricket team was a very successful one in which we won all but one game. The loss was disappointing as this was the team’s rst loss in four years.

One of the main characteristics of this team was the spirit in which they played cricket, not only in the games but also at practice. This was the foundation for the success of this team.

Of the highlights this season two stand out. Firstly, the win against Af es, the rst game of the year which we won by 6 wickets with 2 overs left, and secondly the win against KES by 24 runs.

With all highlights there are disappointments.

Our disappointment was the last game of the year, our return xture against KES at KES where we lost by one run.

All the players that I worked with had great potential, temperament, skill and spirit. I wish to express my thanks to all the boys in the team, especially Daryl van der Merwe who captained the team for the rst half of the year, and Vincent Duys who captained the team during the second half. It was a pleasure to be their coach.
