Extreme Adjectives & Adjective Opposites 9/Grammar
Wow, you look absolutely fantastic today! It’s almost impossible …
Watch out!
Extreme AdjectivesYou may have experienced the situation in which normal adjectives like “good” or “big” or “small” were not quite the right word to describe something.Extreme adjectives offer you the possibility to express yourself more precisely.
1. Substitute “very + adjective” with a matching extreme adjective from the box.
deafening • intriguing • stunning • astonishing • tiny • hilarious • huge • blinding
a) She is very attractive. She looks ________________________________.
b) The pyramids are very big. They are _______________________________.
c) The noise at the concert was (very loud) _________________________________.
d) Wow, the flash light is (very bright) ____________________________________.

f) Hey did you watch that film? It was (very funny) _____________________________.
g) The ending of the book was (very surprising) _______________________________.
h) A newborn is usually (very small) ____________________________.
Watch out!
Adjective OppositesIt is quite easy to express the opposite by saying what something is not, e.g.“not strong” instead of “weak”.It is much easier though to know the correct opposite for an adjective.
2. Connect the adjective with the corresponding opposite.
a) acceptable dissimilar
b) known irresistible
c) possible inacceptable
d) familiar informal
e) resistible unknown
f) similar impossible
g) formal unfamiliar

Conditional II9/Grammar
If I were you, I would repeat the conditional clauses II very carefully.
1. Complete the sentences. Use verbs in past simple.
a) If you ____________________ (study) more, you would get better marks.
b) I would help you if you _______________________ (ask) me.
c) Would you take me to the station if you ____________________ (have) the time?
d) If you ______________________ (not know) him, you wouldn’t get this job.
e) If they __________________________ (start) earlier, they would be ready in time.
f) If they ________________________ (do) a presentation here, I would go there.
g) I would call him right now if I ____________________ (be) you. (Attention!)
2. Complete the main clause correctly.
a) If she had enough money, she ______________________________ (buy) a car.
b) My dad ______________________________ (be) happy if I had an A in my test.
a) If he had to do this job, he _________________________________ (love) it.
c) I _______________________________________ (not pick up) the phone if someone called me that early.
d) If you told him to, he __________________________________ (not go) there.
e) If you hurried up, we ___________________________________ (arrive) in time.
f) My boss _______________________________ (give) me a day off if I asked him.
Watch out!
You use the conditional II to say what would happen if something else happened first.
The chance of happening is possible but very unlikely.
Each conditional sentence has got two parts:
– the ‘if-clause’ (conditional clause) e.g. If I won the lottery, I would buy 100 pairs of shoes.
– the ‘main clause’ She would go to the concert if she had the money.
In conditional II you use past simple in the ‘if-clause’,e.g. If she came to my party, I would ask her for date.
If she didn’t come to my party, I would be upset.
In conditional II you use would/could + infinitive in the ‘main clause’.
e.g. I would invite you if I had a party.
He could help you if he wanted to.
Remember: If I were you … NOT If I was you … No ‘would’ in the if-clause!
