Global EDM - Benefits
Benefits from EDM on central SAP-ERP comes from 2 areas:
1. Global Data / Professional DMS:
● Seamless availability of all data – incl. documents – on all sites
● Increased transparency results in increased parts re-usage
● International collaboration projects (e.g. platform projects)
● Easy transfer of product responsibility between sites
2. Process Integration:
● Synchronization between engineering and logistic data
● Availability of logistics data in engineering
● Overlap of development and sourcing activities
● Simplified transfer of data from engineering to production (& sales,
finance, logistics, etc.)

Global EDM - Challenges
• Usability of SAP for Engineers: => ECTR
• Seamless distribution of documents and the pain of long distances
• Data access vs. data protection in global collaboration
• Language support => 30+ languages
Global PLM I R. Diekmann I 08.11.2012 12 www.hilti.com
The pain of long distances
• Instant file access for everybody from anywhere is possible, but
sometimes also a hurdle (you cannot overcome speed of light)
• Additional effort is necessary to avoid instant updates

IP-Protection and Global Collaboration
Requirements
• Engineering Data (CAD-Data, Drawings, other Documents, BOMs,
certain Material Data, Change Documentation) must be protected from
visibility outside Europe (except explicitly approved)
• Re-usage of parts must be possible also across international locations
• Global engineering projects across international locations must be
possible (especially between Europe and Asia)
Data needs to be protected by default
It needs to be possible to make data visible on demand

Global Marketing Data Management
Situation:
• Marketing data is managed locally on-demand per publication
• Tremendous amount of effort for publishing e.g. product catalogs
• No control on marketing messages given to customers; even sometimes
brand erosion
Approach:
• Globalize & centralize marketing data creation & management
Challenges
• Allow markets the necessary flexibility to adjust marketing messages to
local situations (e.g. not all applications are relevant in all countries);
change management (transfer of responsibility)

Global Marketing Data Management (cont.)
Solution:
• Build up a global repository of ALL marketing relevant data worldwide (150%
content)
• Implement a centralized translation process
• Implement a localization process by selection (“pick & choose”)
• Install the central repository as single-source-of-truth with automated
interfaces to all relevant consuming systems (DTP, Web, B2B, MobileApps,
Customer-SW, …)
Benefits:
• Legally, technically & brand-approved central data repository
• Consistent content and look & feel for all output channels
• Productivity gains in local markets (no translation & content work any more)

Resume
• global EDM in not out-of-the-box but challenges can be solved
• Benefits result from two areas in global EDM:
• Global data / truly working global DMS
• Close process integration between Engineering & downstream
• PLM is more than Engineering & Logistics Data Management
• Marketing needs to be integral part in it
• Benefits come from centralization, globalization, and interfacing
(Single-Source-of-Truth)
