BIOGRAPHYGalileo was born in Italy, in Pisa, near Florence, in the

family of well-born but impoverished nobleman

Vincenzo Galilei, a prominent music theorist and lutenist. In the family

parents of Galileo, Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia

Ammannati — had six children, but was lucky to

survive four: Galileo's eldest son, daughters Virginia and Libya and the youngest son, Michelangelo, who later also gained fame as a composer

and lute player.
