Taiga Urushibata grew up in the bonsai nursery Taisho-En Bonsai Garden of his father. A bonsai garden which is kept so clean that you could eat off the floor.

He has studied during six years with master Masahiko Kimura. Afterwards he joined his father in the bonsai studio and nursery.

In recent years he has become one of Japan’s foremost young bonsai artists. He has given demonstrations and workshops in China, the USA and several European countries.

Koji Hiramatsu belongs to the 4th generation of the owners of the Hiramatsu shunsho-en bonsai garden. He learned the art and science of bonsai from his father.

He is a specialist in shohin, but in his garden we can also find a magnificent collection of large bonsai like black pines. He is a member of the Japan Bonsai Coope-rative and of the Japan Shohin Bonsai Cooperative. He is the managing director of the All Japan Shohin Bonsai Association, for which he is also an official demonstrator.

Koji Hiramatsu has given several demonstrations and workshops in the USA, India, China, Australia and also in Holland and France.

He was a headliner at the 7th World Bonsai Friendship Federation convention and at the Asia-Pacific Bonsai & Suiseki Convention and Exhibition in 2011 when it was held for the first time in Japan

He was the chairman of the Takamatsu bonsai convention in 2014.

Mauro Stemberger was fascinated by bonsai already at the age of fourteen. After following workshops with several European bonsai professionals he founded in 2005 the ‘Italian Bonsai Dream’, a group of bonsai enthusiasts to work and enjoy bonsai art.

He is a professional architect since 2006.

He has written several articles in the most important bonsai magazines. From 2008 till 2010 he was President of UBI (Italian Bonsai Association). In the most recent years Mauro was asked for demonstrations all over Europe (also by Bonsai Association Belgium) and in the USA, Mexico and Australia.

A lot of his work was on large yamadori conifers, but the front picture on this pro-gram book is an Alnus of his hands.

    Spotlight on Broad

    leaves

    After flowering,

    it’s time to start work

    Azaleas take a rest f

    rom growing

    immediately after t

    hey have flowered

    .

    This is the ideal mom

    ent to prepare them

    for the next floweri

ng, but also to tidy u

    p

    the branches, and t

    o repot them.

    Although there are s

    imilarities in

    growing cycles between

    all types of bonsai, azal

    eas

    take somewhat differ

    ent routes. June is a

    busy

    month: as soon as the

    y have finished flower

    ing,

it is time to set to wor

    k, because they will ta

    ke a

    short pause from growin

    g. We therefore have a f

    ew

    weeks to carry out main

    tenance and styling tas

    ks.

    While flowering is the u

    ltimate aim for satisfa

    time to start thinking ab

    out the next time arou

    nd.

    This begins with tidying

    the plant, removing the

    last

    flowers and cutting bac

    k seed pods.

    Looking at the azalea’

s life cycle, we see a

    new

    growth period starting

    from late February. It p

    uts

out a bit of foliage, tur

    ns green again and sw

    ells

    out its flowerbuds, whic

h burst into bloom in M

    ay–

    June.

    Preparing for growt

    h

    During flowering, don’t

    water over the flowers

    ,

    as they are fragile and

    will collapse and rot, t

    aking

    all the other flowers w

    ith them. Every day du

    ring

    flowering, remove the

    withered flowers to a

    llow

    others to open out prop

    erly. Flowering lasts for

    two

to three weeks, but it is c

rucial to cut off the bloo

    ms

    before they wither c

    ompletely, to avoid

    •••

    2 The satsuki’s flowers

    and

    fruits have all been r

    emoved.

    3 After tidying the pla

    nt and its flowers, th

    e foliage

    needs to be trimmed

. To save time, this c

    an be done

    roughly at first with

    a long pair of scisso

    rs.

    4 The shapes are re-es

    tablished by cutting

    off

    everything that stick

    s out and thus redis

    covering

    the bonsai’s original

    form.

    5 The second stage is

    carried

    out with fine scissor

    s.

    Continue the cutting

    back,

    removing slender de

    ad

    branches and those

    that cross

    over or clash with ea

    ch other.

    6 Try to simplify the

    branches, rather tha

    n

    seeking to retain foli

    age

    at any cost. The plan

    t

    will react strongly to

    this procedure. In th

    e

    end, it will have lost

    70% of its foliage m

    ass.

1 The flowers are cut o

ff at the base of the le

    afstalk as soon as

    they start to wither, t

    hus removing fertilise

d fruit at the same tim

    e.
