The challenge

Intermittent renewable power sources, such as wind and photovoltaic systems, will play a prominent role in the generation of electricity. At the same time, the interplay between fluctuating power generation, environmental concerns and controllable, conventional methods of power generation will be of great importance. The operating periods of conventional power stations may be getting ever shorter, but their operation demands more flexibility. This makes flexibility an essential cornerstone for reliable future power supply. Within the context of different energy sources, efficient battery systems help to balance electricity generation and demand. As efficient technologies, they thereby significantly contribute to a flexible and sustainable energy supply.

In future, energy systems will be strongly influenced by renewable energy and electromobility.

Our solution

The company‘s services

To increase the flexibility of a conventional power station, we combine it with a battery storage system, thereby creating an intelligent and integrated solution.

At the power station belonging to EnBW Energie Baden-Würtemberg AG, Kraftwerksbatterie Heilbronn GmbH is implementing a battery storage system with the following components:

» 2 x containers of 2.8 MWh lithium-ion batteries » 6 x 900 kW inverters » 6 x 1000 kVA transformers» Power supply and infrastructure» Optimised system control

This solution meets the challenge of providing primary control reserve in a flexible way. The storage system is also available for further marketing options on the energy markets.

Looking ahead, combining our systems with neighbouring industries or renewable energy plants are conceivable plans.

On behalf of Kraftwerksbatterie Heilbronn GmbH, Bosch is responsible for delivering the battery system, including inverters and battery control, as well as their operation. EnBW is in charge of the grid connection and the integra-tion of the battery system with the power station and its control system. EnBW is also responsible for trading energy from storage systems on energy markets.

EnBW and Bosch – combined intelligence

The optimisation of attainable revenue on the energy markets is performed using information about conditions of the grid, the power generation unit, as well as the battery system. Sce-nario analysis allows us to achieve this kind of advanced con-trol and optimisation of revenue streams by the control unit.

Kraftwerksbatterie Heilbronn GmbH is a young company that already has multifaceted experience and extensive expertise in the field. It is the right place to go with any questions about battery systems used with renewable and conventional power generation. We can rely on our combined knowledge to help with a range of tasks, including:

» assessing the potential of the implementation of battery storage with power generation units or consumers

» preparing and supporting projects» electrical and control system integration of battery systems with power generation units » advice on introducing and marketing battery systems
