POPREEL 1: SURF LIFE AUSTRALIA, STEAMPUNK AND STEEL BAND
Let’s get together and play! Is training hard on the beach something for you? Ironman surf
lifesaving is big in Australia and the club in Newport has the best practitioners in the country.
Find out why these lifesavers think it is so important to train hard.
Are you interested in science fiction, top hats, corsets, retro futurism and the Victorian era?
Then Steampunk is for you! Join us while we meet some enthusiastic Steam punkers in
Hollywood.
Where do you find a high C on a steel pan? The students of Antigua Girls High School know
every tone on theirs and think everybody in the Caribbean should be able to play steel pan.
What instrument do you think everyone in Scandinavia should play? Think about it while
watching the talented girls in Antigua play.

B DISCUSS IN CLASS
Steampunk plays with the idea of having had access to a lot of advanced
technological equipment during the Victorian era. Try to imagine the opposite;
What do you think the world would be like if we didn’t have equipment such as
mobile phones, computers or surf pads? Do you think we would have something else
instead? What, do you think?
Compare 1910 with 2010. How has the world changed? What inventions have
changed the world? Imagine it’s 3010. What do you think will have happened in the
world? What new inventions do you think there are?

D EXTRA MATERIAL
Pretend you are in Australia and write a traveller’s journal. If you have access to
digital equipment, record short movies and add them to a blog as a video log. Use
apps for green screen to make it look as if you are actually in Australia.
Watch parts of the movie “Back to the future”. Use an animation app, such as
Toontastic and create your own futuristic animation.
Listen closely to the section from Antigua about steel bands. Write down every
sentence just as they say them in the video. How does the grammar differ from
regular English? Why do you think that is? How is the grammar supposed to be,
according to British or American English? Record a short film explaining the
differences, using for example www.powtoon.com or www.screencastomatic.com
