Modern Chinese Biotechnology industry
Taking off about 25 years ago with the government’s 863 program1
Only developing country to contribute to the Human Genome Project in 2001
USD 43 billion biotech sales in 2007; to reach USD 85 billion by 2010 (2% of China’s GDP)2
Innovation level behind US, Japan, and Western Europe2
China surpassing US as the world’s leading biotech nation within the next 20 years2

White Biotechnology in China Current status
China has enhanced its global status to the third largest fuel-ethanol producer and the
second largest producer of chemicals across the world1.
Major achievements in Chinese White Biotechnology in recent years
Super yeast with higher ethanol tolerance (15%~17%) used in fuel ethanol production
Pilot production of fuel ethanol using lignocellulosic materials
Biomaterials (e.g. polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and polylactide (PLA)) commercialized
Some bio-based chemicals, such as long-chain dicarboxylic acids (LDA),
1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), acrylamide developed and commercialized
