Useless Advice

It’s amazing 1 how often getting / how often I get advice I don’t want. Recently, for example, I decided to change my job and my family and friends went on and on, telling me why I shouldn’t. It was tiring 2 how much I listened / listening to them. I changed my job anyway. Mac

4 Complete the sentences with adjectives from exercise 3.

1 This is my first time in Istanbul. It’s to be here!

2 I think it’s to go there by yourself. It’s not a safe area.

3 It’s to speak with your mouth full.

4 It’s absolutely to get a visa before you travel there.

5 It’s to wait for him any longer! I’m leaving!

6 It’s to have such good weather, so we should enjoy it while it lasts.

7 It’s really to see all these kids here today, doing sports and having fun.

8 I think it’s to carry an umbrella. It might not rain but you never know.

9 It’s to wear friendship bracelets these days.

10 It’s so to hear news stories about war and violence.

These days, it’s fashionableB1 to carry a mobile phone at all times. Many people seem to feel it’s essentialB1 to be in constant contact with friends, family and colleagues. I think it’s ridiculousB2 to be so dependent on a machine. On top of that, it’s rudeB1 to use it when you’re with others, and lots of people do that. For me, it’s depressingB2 to see people sitting together in a restaurant but texting or chatting to others on their phones. (no name)

I agree it’s rareB1 to see people without mobile phones nowadays but I actually think it’s encouragingB2 to see people communicating so enthusiastically. And it may sound silly, but I think it’s thrillingB2 to get messages and pictures from friends in the middle of a boring workday. More seriously, there are times when it’s riskyB2 to cut yourself off from the world. What if someone needs you? What if there’s an emergency? As far as I’m concerned, it’s sensibleB1 to stay in touch. Tomas
