The FH Aachen
A: The university system in Germany
In Germany, there is the option to choose from different types of universities. They
comprise mainly of the Universität (traditional university) and the Fachhochschule
(University of Applied Sciences). Both types of universities confer academic degrees
upon completion of studies. A Universität is more scientific and research oriented,
whereas a Fachhochschule is more practical application oriented. There are however
Fachhochschulen which are very research oriented, e.g. the FH Aachen. The most
important difference is that a FH cannot offer a doctoral program. Under Universität,
the institutional type of Technische Universität (TU) and the Technische Hochschule
(TH) are included.
The concept of a Fachhochschule is unique to Germany. Since their establishment in the
70's, a rapidly surged in popularity. Today approximately 1/4 of all new students start
their studies at a Fachhochschule, 32% of all graduates hail from Fachhochschulen.
Currently, around 60% of all those employed as engineers in Germany have completed
their studies at a Fachhochschule.
The advantages of studying at a Fachhochschule are quite obvious:
Concise and short study period: normal study period is between 7-8 semesters
Practical education ("academically educated practitioner")
Well organised course structure: content and time are very clearly structured
The choice of subjects is oriented to meet the necessities of professional demands. Even
research activities are application based and bound very closely with the regional
economy.
In Germany, there are around 150 Fachhochschulen and most of them are supported by
the federal states. A small number of them are under a private or church trusteeship.
Many FH have arisen from facilities that were single subject oriented, e.g. engineering
schools or higher business schools. Therefore, some departments of the FH Aachen can
boast of a 100 year old heritage. A federal law ("Hochschulrahmengesetz des Bundes")
passed in 1976 elevated Fachhochschulen to the same status as that of a Universität.
B: About the FH Aachen
The Fachhochschule Aachen was founded in 1971 from existing engineering schools,
some dating back to the 19th century, with departments in Aachen and Jülich. It became
a centre for:
University education in Science, Economics and Design
Research and Development
Technology transfer and co-operation with the industry
The curricula and research programmes on offer at the FH Aachen include engineering,
business/economics, architecture, art and design. Scientific and technical disciplines
constitute the largest part of all courses taught at the FH Aachen.
With approximately 8500 students, 220 professors, 200 part-time teaching staff and 450
employees in scientific and research departments, the FH Aachen is considered one of
the largest and most research-oriented Fachhochschulen in Deutschland.
The Federal Framework Law for Education in 1976 raised the legal status of all
Fachhochschulen to a position equal to that of traditional universities. Within the
context of law, the FH Aachen, like all other FHs, is autonomous, meaning that freedom
of teaching, research and academic self-administration are guaranteed rights.
Further Points:
- Emphasis on practical training and applied research
Practical education is an important feature in the structure and teaching methods at the
FH Aachen. We emphasise on
The course of studies, which offers industrial experience, opportunity for
integrated industrial placement and written theses based on practical experience
The range of offered subjects, which reflects important developments in science
and technology
The structured organisation of degree courses and teaching in small groups,
resulting in a shorter average study period compared to traditional universities
Research and development work of professors and lecturers, which concentrates
on converting the results of basic research into new or improved technologies
The qualifications of our teaching staff; professors are generally required to have
at least 5 years practical/professional experience as well as academic and
scientific qualifications (as a rule Ph.D.)
Postgraduate courses for professionals
The work of the Technology Transfer Offices in Aachen and Jülich, which pass
on the research findings of the FH Aachen to the industry and supervise the
resulting projects, thus promoting the exchange of knowledge and practice
between science and industry
The success of this concept is confirmed both by the growing number of students and
the increasing research in new areas, which include various research programmes
financially supported by the Federal government, the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, the
European Community and by trade and industry.
In addition to that, the FH Aachen cooperates with local and regional firms, as well
as firms outside this region, with universities (e.g. RWTH Aachen) and research centers
(e.g. Forschungszentrum Jülich, the German Space Center-DLR, the Fraunhofer
Institute for Laser Technology-ILT, and the European Center for Mechatronics).
- The FH Aachen in numbers
The Fachhochschule Aachen has about 8,500 students, with international students
accounting for 1,700 of them.
12 Departments
32 Courses with more than 40 possible combinations for various subject
emphasis
Research in many areas
220 Full-time faculty (Professors)
200 Part-time faculty personell
450 Staff in departments, data processing centre, library and administration
40 Apprentices
200 Laboratories
5 Central facilities (Data Processing Centre, Library, Centre for Further
Education Jülich, Solar Institute Jülich, Central Quality Development)
More than 150 cooperation agreements with European and non-European
universities and research institutions
Regular postgraduate courses at our own institute in Jülich and numerous
postgraduate courses carried out by professors of the FH Aachen, often in co-
operation with other research institutions
- Forging links between science and industry
1990: Founding of the "Institute for Industrial Aerodynamics at the FH Aachen"
(I.F.I.)
Co-operation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Aachen (IHK) and
with the Aachen Chamber
of Crafts (HWK)
Co-operation with the Aachen Innovation and Technology Transfer Company
(AGIT) and with the Industry and Trade Promotion Companies in this region
Spin-off effects (e.g. founding of several companies)
C: The campusses Aachen and Jülich
In Aachen seven departments are located with more than 6000 students:
Architecture
Civil Engineering
Design
Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
Aerospace Engineering
Business
Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics
Furthermore, the President's office, the central administration and the central library are
located here.
In Jülich three departments with more than 2000 students are located:
Chemistry and Biotechnology
Medical Technology and Technomathematics
Energy Technology
All services and facilities for students e.g. study counselling, Dept. of International
Affairs (Akademisches Auslandsamt), Registrar's Office (Studierendensekretariat),
departmental libraries, student housing or cafeterias are available in both Aachen and
Jülich.
While in Jülich all facilities are concentrated together - thereby lending a campus look
and feel to it - the university in Aachen is spread over the entire city and therefore lacks
an integrated campus structure. All facilities in Aachen are housed in seven buildings in
the city, some of them possessing a rich history and tradition.
Site plans: http://www.fh-aachen.de/anfahrt.html
D: International orientation
The FH Aachen supports not only the economic and technological growth in the region
but also values the co-operation with other institutes within Europe. As a result the FH
Aachen participates in important EU-programs and supports the international co-
operation between various universities in the whole of Europe. Currently the FH
Aachen cooperates with 80 universities from 18 member states in the European
"ERASMUS" program and leads the EU "LEONARDO" programms for different
universities in the state of North Rhine-Westfalia.
In almost all study programs, students have the possibility to complete at least one
integrated semester abroad. In addition, the FH Aachen in co-operation with foreign
partner universities has established several dual award programs. These allow students
to acquire degrees from two universities through an integrated study abroad stay.
Several undergraduate and graduate degree programs are taught, either in the first year
or completely, in English. These courses are suitable not only for international but also
for German students, who wish to apply their English skills.
Currently the FH Aachen has agreements of co-operation with more than 150 partner
universities worldwide, which include the exchange of students, staff and also in
collaboration in research and development.
This international orientation further helps international scientific dialogue and
improves the language skills of students, which in turn enhances their flexibility and
improves their chances in the international job market.
E: Perspectives for graduates
In Germany, more than 65% of all German engineers and around half of all graduates in
economics, management and IT are from Fachhochschulen.
The academic credentials of an engineering study program are recognised by the
Association of German Engineers (Verein der Deutschen Ingenieure) or the respective
associations in charge and allow the graduates to work as officially accredited engineers
or architects. The degrees in business and design are likewise recognised from the
relevant authorities.
Following a decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Arts (KMK)
specially qualified graduates from Fachhochschulen can directly join a PhD. course
without first acquiring a certification from a traditional university. The Master's degree
allows qualified students direct entry to a PhD. program.
F: The ECTS system
The FH Aachen is an ECTS-University. ECTS is the European Credit Point Transfer
and Accumulation System. This system promotes a clear and transparent structure of
study courses and allows one to get recognition for performances, earned outside the FH
Aachen, i.e. at another university in Germany or abroad. More : http://www.fh-

Studying and Housing in Aachen...
The Studentenwerk Aachen provides in Aachen and Juelich in total 4.352
beds in 20 student residence buildings.
Nothing compares to the attractive prices of the rooms offered at our
student residence locations. The different residence buildings offer an
impressive variety of leisure time facilities to the student community: table
tennis, fitness room, bar and sauna. The students are directly involved in
the creation of comfortable daily living conditions through the student cooperative
management.
The cost of rent is related to the room type – a single room starts from 148
€ per month, an appartment from 163 € per month, all extra charges
included. You can choose from our selection: Flats, single rooms, shared
rooms and even apartments. Bath, toilet and kitchen facilities are always at

Wohngeld

The City of Aachen
By choosing Aachen for your stay here in
Germany, you have opened yourself the
door to a beautiful, historical and an
youthful city. Aachen lies in the centre of
the "Euregio", the border area between
Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The unique location of Aachen in Three
Countries' Corner (Dreiländereck),
introduces one to the exchange of
knowledge, culture and lifestyle that goes
beyond borders and whose fruits manifest
themselves quite visibly. People from
neighbouring countries come to Aachen to
work and Aachener (that's how people of
Aachen are known!) travel to nearby Lüttich (Liège) or to Maastricht, an equally "old-
youthful" city full of life. When you hear the sentence "Stadt im Herzen Europas", then
one refers to the fact that European ideals like freedom and living together
harmoniously without borders are a way of everyday life here and that in this three
Countries' Coruer called ''Euregio'' Europe has been existence for a long time even
before institutions and treaties were founded.
Today, with around 250,000 inhabitants, Aachen is the largest westernmost city in
Deutschland. It lies directly at the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. 40,000
students work here in the four universities, industry and trade keep blooming beyond

the borders and every year people from all over the world travel to Aachen to soak in
the atmosphere and enjoy the international flair. A special attraction every year is
CHIO, one of the most important international horse riding tournaments. But beside
these, there are a lot more on offer. The ''Aachener Kultursommer'', held every year in
July, sees reputed musicians and artistes on one of "Germany's most beautiful open air
stages" and naturally the carnival in February when people donning hilarious costumes
and a festive cheer to accompany it, celebrate
the end of winter.
In Aachen, it all began more than 2000 years
ago with the Romans. They created a much
loved therapeutic bath in the bubbling springs
and consecrated the city with the name "Aquae
Granni" Grannus, a Germanic god of well-being
and water. But even before these people came
to this place and bathed in the beneficial waters
of the hottest springs in Europe.
However, it took an upswing in the 8th century
as Charlemagne, Emperor of Franconia, made
Aachen - his favorite palatinate - the center of
his huge empire. Under his rule the first part of
the Aachen Cathedral - the wonderful and
distinctly different octagon - was constructed. During this period, Aachen attained fame
and recognition and became an important center in the creation of Europe. Even today,
many buildings in the city center remind us of Emperor Charlemagne and his time.
Every year the city of Aachen awards the international ''Karlpreis'' to celebrities who
promote better understanding between people along the principles of European ideals.
Thereafter for a long time all German kings were crowned in Aachen. In the Middle
Ages, it became an important pilgrimage center in Europe, when after the canonization
of Emperor Charlemagne his bones were enshrined and revered. Besides, Aachen is a
stop on the Path of St. James (Jakobsweg) to Santiago de Compostela.

Around the end of the Middle Ages, Aachen's importance was greatly reduced and it
was only in the 18th century again, that it became famous as a fashionable city of baths
and health spas - a role which it had had almost 2000 years before. The situation

improved and with the establishment of the Aachen University of Technology
(Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule, RWTH) in 1870, Aachen as we know
it today was created.
In the Euregio there are not only interesting and lively cities like Maastricht or Lüttich
with numerous shopping possibilities, but cosy cafés - which invite you to bide away
your time, a huge offer of cultural events, such as concerts and parties. The entire region
offers a lot more - old hamlets in Province Limburg, placid lakes and woods in the Eifel
and almost always an intercultural event teaming with open and interesting people.
In "Klenkes" magazine you can get to know what is happening in Aachen. Other than
that you also have the ''Stadt Aachen'', the student guide "Eureview" and a collection of
links about the Euregio. The last two offer a lot of tips about the entire
For sport lovers, the University Sports Center offers over 60 different types of sport
programs, ranging from aikido to basketball and climbing to high diving and yoga.
Water sport freaks can also go sailing or surfing. Do look up the current program on
offer and set yourself loose!
When you want to go out of the city, then you have the options of forests and woods in
the Eifel, south of Aachen or in the mountenous area ''Hohes Venn'', an unique highland
moor landscape just at the gates of the city. In summer, you can easily travel by train or
car to the sea at Ostende and enjoy the sun and the see.
In Aachen there is a lot to see and we hope that we could offer you a glimpse of that. If
you are already curious, then do come over and look around for yourself.
Viel Spaß!
The city of julich
Jülich is an inviting medium-sized city with approximately 33,000 inhabitants, nestled
between the attractive landscape of the Rur River and the Eifel hills, about 35
kilometers west of Aachen.
In the first century BC, Jülich was founded as the Roman station of "Juliacum", a day's
journey from the starting point of the main Roman road in Cologne. Jülich's 2000 years
of history provide unique sites integrated into the townscape. The ''Citadel'', an
impressive fortified complex covering 120,000 square meters, was built in the 16th
century in the so-called "neo-Italian fortification" style.
One of Jülich's landmarks is the Hexenturm
(The Witches' Tower), a city gate in a typical
Gothic style. The "Rur Gate" or the so-called
Hexenturm is one of the four city gates to have
existed in the medieval fortification of Jülich. It
is also the only gate to remain in existence.
Following the almost complete destruction of
Jülich during World War II, the first measures
to safeguard the Hexenturm took place between
1949-1952. A further restoration process
followed from 1961-1964, during which the
"onion" shaped domes of the gate were
faithfully reconstructed in its original 17th
century style.
Jülich's gardens and parks offer peace, tranquility and relaxation. For sport and leisure
activities, many possibilities are offered all around the city. For nature lovers, there
exists a well built and well connected network of trails and cycle paths along the Rur
with a multitude of nature preserve and conservation areas. The city of Jülich boasts of
more than 60 sport organisations with many football grounds, tennis courts, gyms and
riding arenas among them. When at the end of your day and after your activities, you
want to relax, then recreational areas, e.g. Brückenkopfpark, are especially
recommended.
Jülich is a city of science and research and is home to the largest research centre in
Germany (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and the Jülich campus of the FH Aachen. The
Forschungszentrum Jülich houses the world's second fastest supercomputer: the
JUGENE. It is the world's fastest civilian supercomputer. With an aim to make more
precise forecasts about future climate changes, this facility will soon boast of a new
supercomputer which will stake its claim as the world's third fastest supercomputer.
Jülich has more to be proud of than its supercomputer. The 2007 Nobel Prize winner in
Physics, scientist Peter Grünberg, comes from this city. In 1988 he had discovered the
so-called Giant Magnetoresistive Effect (GMR) leading to the breakthrough in Gigabyte
harddiscs, which can be found in all PCs today.
