Foreign agent for Hitler and Adenauer: The dra-matic fate of Richard Christmann reveals the fas-cist roots of West German foreign intelligence and its secret intelligence policy in northern Africa.

In the 1950s, the West German “Federal Intelli-gence Agency” (BND), founded in 1956, and its precursor, the Gehlen Organization, recruited much of their staff from people who had worked for the Gestapo, SS and military intelligence in the Third Reich. Among them was Lorraine-born Richard Christmann, who served as a double agent in the Wehrmacht and in the Netherlands and was also a case officer in occupied Paris. As a BND re-sident in Tunis from 1956 to 1961, his tasks inclu-ded thwarting the official policy of rapprochement between Germany and France by providing targe-ted support to the Algerian independence move-ment against France.

Using previously inaccessible documents, the aut-hors debunk the myth that the BND was merely gathering intelligence abroad and not intervening in armed conflicts.

In this abundantly illustrated volume, Franz Al-bert Heinen gives the first ever comprehensive overview of these colossal architectural ensembles, assesses their function for the Nazi regime, por-trays daily life in their cadre-training program, de-tails the crimes of »Ordensjunker« in the Soviet Union, and tells what these still largely unknown structures were used for after the war.

In 1934, construction work began on the three Nazi »Ordensburgen« Vogelsang (in the Eifel mountains), Sonthofen (in the Allgäu region) and Krössinsee (in Pomerania). The head of personnel of the Nazi Party, Dr. Robert Ley, wanted to use these sites to build up the party’s full-time staff. For reconstructing the international pre-history of the building of the Berlin Wall and the exact ballot between Chruschtschow and the leader of the So-cialist Unity Party of Germany, the author could use for the first time the transcripts of the conver-sations between Chruschtschow and Ulbricht – transcripts which have not been accessible to re-search until now.

The long way to the Berlin Wall started in 1945. Stalin commissioned the German Communist Par-ty (KPD) in the Soviet occupation zone to take over power. The three western powers safeguarded their sphere of influence at the same time. In 1949 two German states were born, though Berlin was still divided into four sectors: The town has become from now on an eratic block and a window of the west, while being in the middle of the GDR. After the Soviets had failed to drive out the Allies of West-Berlin by blockading the city in 1948/1949, the second crisis of Berlin followed from 1958 to 1960, when Moscow gave an ultimatum to the we-stern powers to clear off Berlin and to make it to a free city. The decision to construct the border was made by Nikita Chruschtschow. This was based on the increasing number of refugees from the GDR.
