The Arab RevolutionDemocratic awakening from Tunisia to the Golf

A compact survey of the events and developments in eleven countries of the Arab world and of the perspectives opened up by the revolution.

Ten renowned experts of the region outline the causes of the democratic awakening, depict the course of events, and introduce the protagonists. Tunisia and Libya (Thomas Schmid, Berliner Zei-tung), Egypt (Frank Nordhausen, Berliner Zei-tung), Algeria (Helmut Dietrich, DAAD), Morocco (Marc Dugge, ARD), Syria (Martina Doering, Ber-liner Zeitung), Lebanon (Markus Bickel, Frankfur-ter Allgemeine Zeitung), Jordan (Heiko Flottau, Süddeutsche Zeitung), Yemen (Jens Heibach, Mar-burg University), Saudi Arabia (Henner Fürtig, GIGA Institut) and the Gulf states (Alexander Smoltczyk, Spiegel). A captivating chapter of con-temporary history that is also an indictment against the absurdity of a law that, though somewhat wea-kened, still exists today.

“Nordhausen and Schmid poignantly depict the course of these revolutions.”

From the Soviet Union to IndependenceA journey through 15 former Soviet republics

The authors travel through all 15 former Soviet republics twenty years after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, describing the dramatic changes that have taken place there in the last two decades. An exciting mixture of contemporary historical ana-lysis and vivid travel reporting.

The Soviet Union was dissolved after the coup d’etat against Mikhail Gorbachev in late 1991. Its 15 constituent republics became independent states. Russia has been ruled with a strong hand ever since. The Baltic states have become members of the European Union and Estonia is even using the euro. In the Caucasus and Central Asia Isla-mism is on the rise, and in some places authoritari-an rulers have emerged and dubious oligarchies have taken power. But “Soviet man” has survived it all.

German historian Thomas Kunze and Swiss jour-nalist Thomas Vogel describe still existing similari-ties while pointing out distinct differences.

In the Shadow of the Third ReichThe Federal Intelligence Service and its agent Richard Christmann

Foreign agent for Hitler and Adenauer: The dra-matic fate of Richard Christmann reveals the fas-cist roots of West German foreign intelligence and its secret intelligence policy in northern Africa.

In the 1950s, the West German “Federal Intelli-gence Agency” (BND), founded in 1956, and its precursor, the Gehlen Organization, recruited much of their staff from people who had worked for the Gestapo, SS and military intelligence in the Third Reich. Among them was Lorraine-born Richard Christmann, who served as a double agent in the Wehrmacht and in the Netherlands and was also a case officer in occupied Paris. As a BND re-sident in Tunis from 1956 to 1961, his tasks inclu-ded thwarting the official policy of rapprochement between Germany and France by providing targe-ted support to the Algerian independence move-ment against France.

Using previously inaccessible documents, the aut-hors debunk the myth that the BND was merely gathering intelligence abroad and not intervening in armed conflicts.

    Kai Schlüter (ed.)

Günter Grass on Tour for Willy BrandtThe legendary election campaign of 1969

Kai Schlüter provides a wealth of original docu-ments, photos and reminiscences of participants in chronicling the legendary election campaign tour of Günter Grass in 1969, an event which changed the Federal Republic and made Willy Brandt chan-cellor.

In 1969, Günter Grass spent six months touring West Germany in an old VW bus campaigning for Willy Brandt. He covered 32,000 kilometers and spoke to around 60,000 people at more than 100 events. It was a totally new kind of campaigning in Germany. People with no connection to the SPD were organizing support initiatives and advocating ideas that were controversial even in the party but which eventually became official government poli-cy after Brandt’s election victory.

This volume documents the memories of partici-pants and puts the events in political-historical perspective. The texts and multitude of photos bring a turbulent era back to life in which grass-roots politics ruled the day.

Death Penalty for SuicideA Historical Crime Case

“A curious and touching piece of European con-temporary and legal history.”

    Der Spiegel

“Heidrun Hannusch tells the life of a mother and daughter in London exile, as captivating as a detec-tive story. Though always close to her female pro-tagonists, she’s careful never to lose the big picture. In a detailed and sympathetic fashion, she describes their growing desperation with each new Nazi mi-litary victory, ultimately culminating in a suicide pact.”

    Deutschlandradio Kultur

„As interest in the movie The King‘s Speech sweeps the world, the story of the stammering monarch‘s intervention to save the life of Irene Coffee makes fascinating reading.“

    The Evening Standard

„A shameful chapter of British wartime justice has been exposed in a new book which reveals how an English court passed the death sentence on a young and terrified German Jewish refugee who entered a suicide pact with her mother because both feared they would be murdered by the Nazis.“

The Bible HunterThe Adventurous Search for the Original Version of the New Testament

Jürgen Gottschlich takes his readers on an intelle-ctual and emotional journey through 2,000 years of cultural history.

German Bible scholar Constantin von Tischendorf made a sensational discovery in the mid-nineteenth century. After years of adventurous, exhausting and dangerous pursuit, he stumbled upon a pile of parchment leaves at ancient Saint Catherine’s Mo-nastery, in the midst of the Sinai desert. This so-called »Codex Sinaiticus« from the fourth century A.D. contains the oldest complete New Testament ever discovered – along with passages deleted from the modern Bible. In 1859, Tischendorf brought large parts of the codex to Europe. Was this a res-cue operation or art theft?

»An adventurous journey through 2,000 years of cultural history.«

    stern

“Jürgen Gottschlich tells a story for believers and non-believers alike, discreetly taking us back to the culture shock of the nineteenth century when a sense of anxiety swept through Germany as Bible scholars revealed that the New Testament as a co-herent corpus of texts was the product of decades and centuries.”

The AgentMy Life in Three Secret Services

For the first time ever, Werner Stiller speaks openly about his turbulent life in the world of international espionage. His account is likewise the psychogram of a man who wended his way through opposing social systems and for whom tension is an elixir of life.

It was the Ministry for State Security’s biggest de-feat. In January 1979, Lieutenant Werner Stiller, case officer of Markus Wolf’s foreign espionage unit, defected from East to West. He had fled to the Federal Republic with a suitcase full of highly ex-plosive documents which he used to unmask dozens of East German spies. Erich Mielke vowed to track down Stiller at any cost, to get him back and try him before a military court where the death sen-tence was awaiting him. The West German Federal Intelligence Service protected their source around the clock. No longer safe in Europe, he was ultima-tely entrusted to the CIA. In the United States Stiller assumed a new identity.

The Enemy is to the EastHitler’s Secret Plans for a War against the Soviet Union in 1939

Hitler had been planning a possible war of inter-vention against the U.S.S.R. ever since taking po-wer in 1933. Starting from this hypothesis, Rolf-Dieter Müller’s book offers a new perspective on the prehistory of Hitler’s campaign in Russia.

The invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22nd, 1941 is considered by historians to be the last pha-se of Hitler’s step-by-step plan to conquer Germany’s »Lebensraum« in the East. In his latest book, renowned military historian Müller challen-ges this view. Using previously overlooked sources, he shows that Hitler and the Wehrmacht began ne-gotiations with Poland to this end, even conside-ring an alliance with Japan.

“Rolf-Dieter Müller’s study is the most important book to come out in years about the evolution of the Second World War.”

    Nazi OrdensburgenVogelsang, Sonthofen, Krössinsee

In this abundantly illustrated volume, Franz Al-bert Heinen gives the first ever comprehensive overview of these colossal architectural ensembles, assesses their function for the Nazi regime, por-trays daily life in their cadre-training program, de-tails the crimes of »Ordensjunker« in the Soviet Union, and tells what these still largely unknown structures were used for after the war.

In 1934, construction work began on the three Nazi »Ordensburgen« Vogelsang (in the Eifel mountains), Sonthofen (in the Allgäu region) and Krössinsee (in Pomerania). The head of personnel of the Nazi Party, Dr. Robert Ley, wanted to use these sites to build up the party’s full-time staff. Training courses took place at Vogelsang and Krö-ssinsee from 1936 to 1939, whereas Sonthofen ser-ved as the provisional home of the Adolf Hitler schools – preparatory training centers for the Nazi Ordensburgen – from 1937 till the end of the war.

Cracow CastleThe seat of power of Governor-General Hans Frank, 1939 – 1945

Dieter Schenk vividly portrays how Cracow Castle became the focal point of Nazi crimes in the Gene-ral Government.

Cracow Castle, the Wawel, where more than 30 Polish kings were crowned and laid to rest, is a national shrine to Poles. The Germans occupied the castle after the start of World War II and tur-ned it into the nerve center of their newly created General Government. As Governor-General Hitler appointed former Reich Commissioner of Justice Hans Frank, who soon earned the nickname »King of Poland« thanks to his penchant for pomposity. Frank organized extravagant parties at the castle, entertaining Nazi VIPs and prominent artists of the Third Reich at luxurious formal dinners. At the same time, he looted Poland‘s art treasures and gave orders to ruthlessly exploit the country, to ex-terminate Poland‘s intelligentsia, and make prepa-rations for the Holocaust.

The Way to the WallPhases of the History of Division

For reconstructing the international pre-history of the building of the Berlin Wall and the exact ballot between Chruschtschow and the leader of the So-cialist Unity Party of Germany, the author could use for the first time the transcripts of the conver-sations between Chruschtschow and Ulbricht – transcripts which have not been accessible to re-search until now.

The long way to the Berlin Wall started in 1945. Stalin commissioned the German Communist Par-ty (KPD) in the Soviet occupation zone to take over power. The three western powers safeguarded their sphere of influence at the same time. In 1949 two German states were born, though Berlin was still divided into four sectors: The town has become from now on an eratic block and a window of the west, while being in the middle of the GDR. After the Soviets had failed to drive out the Allies of West-Berlin by blockading the city in 1948/1949, the second crisis of Berlin followed from 1958 to 1960, when Moscow gave an ultimatum to the we-stern powers to clear off Berlin and to make it to a free city. The decision to construct the border was made by Nikita Chruschtschow. This was based on the increasing number of refugees from the GDR.

On the Road to UtopiaDaily Life and Governance in the GDR 1961 – 1971

Stefan Wolle’s »The Ideal World of Dictatorship« has since become a standard work on the Hone-cker era in East Germany. This is the second volu-me of his history of daily life in the GDR in which he skillfully combines the perspectives of gover-nance and daily life like no other historian of the GDR.

The mousetrap snapped shut on August 13, 1961. The GDR was walled in. But wasn’t this an oppor-tunity as well? Soviet leadership proclaimed the building of communism in 1961. Utopian as it may have been, a period of reform commenced in East Germany in 1962-63. The economy was supposed to be modernized, and the Party enlisted the sup-port of intellectuals and young people. Amazing things were happening in cinema and literature. But how far could these changes go?
