My Dear Little PestWhy disruptive children are not disturbed and how we can help them

Normal or already »abnormal«? Help and relief for parents

»Abnormal« children can make parents and teachers livid with rage. This doesn’t have to be. Family thera-pist Felicitas Römer looks at the real causes and offers some insights to readers which can bring relief to both parents and children. We are constantly getting quicker to label a child as aggressive, learning-disabled or »difficult«. But are children today really more disturbed than in the past? Or have we become increasingly intolerant of anything which disturbs us? And how can we help the children? The author shows why children behave abnormally and how giving little pests an under-standing and appreciative look can help not only them but also help the parents make everyday family life and the school situation more relaxed again.

Felicitas Römer is a systemic family counsellor, freelance journalist, author, family coach and mother of four. In addition to that she also does volunteer counselling on the family hotline of the German Child Protection Agency. This is how she gets first hand experience of the extreme demands put on children in our society.

The Wonder of Security

Because people need security!

The desire to feel secure counts as one of the most important feelings in uncertain times. With great sensitivity, the experienced therapists Udo Baer and Gabriele Frick-Baer demonstrate ways of achieving more inner security – whether you are alone, a cou-ple or in advanced years.Protection and warmth, a sense belonging and trust are indispensable for a successful life – the authors describe this using a huge number of true stories from their own therapeutic practice. And also how a lack of »security« can lead to illness. However, the classic »security destroyers« like unmourned loss, loneliness, traumatic experiences, mistrust and the feeling of inner loss can be defeated – so that we can again find peace and security in ourselves and our environment.

Udo Baer, PhD, graduate teacher, creative body thera-pist, head of the creative therapy fu-ture workshop, of which he was also co-founder.

Gabriele Frick-Baer, graduate teacher, co-founder of the creative therapy future workshop. Both have worked for many years in therapeutic practice and have been leaders of seminars and training groups for artistic therapies.

The Magical World of Alzheimer25 tips to make life with dementia patients easier and more fulfilling.

How to understand people with dementia

How can we build up time and again a positive and supportive link to dementia patients? Based on many years of experience, the author decodes the deeper meaning and significance which are hidden behind what often seems like the strange and senseless be-haviour of people with dementia. He wraps up each of his interpretations with a message which is aimed at making life with dementia patients easier, more pleasant and more fulfilling.»Imagine yourself in a foreign land where you don’t speak the language and where you have lost your way. Then imagine that you meet people there who confront you with a smile on their faces. How would you feel?« Huub Buijssen

Discipline, Respect and Good MarksSuccessful schoolchildren need clear parents

What kind of discipline does success-ful learning need?

Contemporary discipline training is based on dialogue, respect, emotional closeness and trust. According to this successful author of many parent-ing guides, if these all come together, successful learning at school can be achieved almost by itself.Discipline does not have to be authoritarian. Detlef Träbert rethinks the expression and provides many practical suggestions on how best to give the child in the family the kind of encouragement which has a particularly positive effect on performance and behaviour in school. The author uses lots of examples to show how parents (and teachers!) can provide the child with the inner security needed for success at school – from the point of view of relationships, for his or her self-confidence and social behaviour. A large part in this is played by the adults having a clear presence.

Detlef Träbert, a graduate teacher, is the honorary federal chairman of the German »Aktion Humane Schule« (Humane School Cam-paign) and via the school coun-selling service provides »impuls-es« above all with parent counsel-ling and parent training in lec-tures and workshops along with further education for teachers and therapists.

Hashish. Consumption – Effect – Addiction – Self-help-Therapy

What everyone should know about hashish

Hashish or marijuana are the most commonly used illegal drugs these days. The experienced addiction expert Helmut Kuntz provides advice for consumers, their relatives and friends. Without prejudices about the »fascination« of the drug, he also explains about all the risks which accompany its use. The special feature of this book is its thorough insight into every-day world of drugs and the reality of life for the main-ly young consumers. Using his many years of practi-cal counselling, the author describes authentic pat-terns from inside and outside the family environment which can favour addiction and the misuse of hash-ish. The book is rounded off with one »service chap-ter« each for mothers, fathers and young adults.

»We need in the bookshops a reader-friendly all-par-ty work about Cannabis with the latest develop-ments which will be equally of use to adults and young people, consumers and non-consumers.« Helmut Kuntz

Helmut Kuntz is a family therapist and experienced expert on addic-tion. For years he has held courses at schools for addiction prophylaxis and he works together with young people within the scope of thera-peutic and preventative measures.

In this book, the authors present their treasure chest of methods for transferring knowledge. Trainers are exposed to an abundance of methods and possibili-ties to help them put over their content in such a way that the participants really retain in their heads what they have learned. To make your content worthy of being remembered, you must present it in an interesting way. What they have to learn should be taken in via as many senses as possible, since this increases the ability to remem-ber. Based on suggestopedia and brain research, the authors present tailor-made methods for the individ-ual training phases. This provides trainers with sug-gestions on how they can go beyond PowerPoint and still make their content exciting. All the meth-ods are presented in concrete content-related exam-ples (including alternatives).

Recognising and Solving Team ConflictsBetween emotions and practical constraints

As long as teams work in a common direction and work happily together, the work gets done success-fully. But what happens when problems arise? – Franz Will shows how to recognise conflicts even as they start and how to analyse, control and defuse them. The checklist for team diagnosis provides the first criteria for working on team conflicts. There are many examples and approaches for solutions to make it easy to put this into practice. Subjects like in-tuition, working together with nerds, victim/aggres-sor dynamics, serious failures of leadership and burn-out are also dealt with.

Life and Work in BalanceStrategies and exercises for trainers, coaches and counsellors

In this book, the two experts on work-life balance convey their know-how so practically and clearly that trainers, counsellors and coaches can integrate the exercises and strategies in their work, make them a part of their seminars and pass them on to their cli-entele. They provide a clear insight into the principles of balance and present eight concrete strategies for attaining more balance. These strategies are de-scribed briefly and concisely and then followed up with concrete practical exercises. The exercises are designed to touch and motivate people and help them with the practical implementation and conse-quently facilitate the learning transfer.

When everyone pulls on the same rope

Activity-based exercises offer a huge potential for team training because they show clearly and authentically where the opportunities for changing the team lie. There are special exercises to make the team develop-ment visible. A story framework takes control of the process and any problems which might arise and indicates the various opportunities for further work. Consequently, alongside the exercise descriptions, the advanced team process, the effects of the exercises and the development within the team are all recognisable. The processes described become clear and understandable to the readers thanks to the interpolated dialogue.

Resilience Training for LeadershipHow to strengthen your resilience and that of your staff

Resilient people can react in a flexible way to new demands

Discontinuity, quick changes, complexity and the pressure to make decisions are all increasingly ruling our lives. What a great chance for us to develop our-selves further! But only if we actively take hold of it and do not let ourselves be backed against the wall by increasing pressures. Resilience is about thinking positively and looking at the resources instead of the deficits. This book is vehemently not about avoiding thoughts, obstacles and challenges, but rather to master them and to grow from them. Sylvia Kéré Wellensiek presents ten – tried and tested – training steps to show management how to use resilience di-rectly in their dealings with staff, colleagues, bosses and customers.

Sylvia Kéré Wellensiek, graduate en-gineer in interior architecture, train-er, therapist (physiotherapy and psychotherapy), coach, runs a train-ing and educational institute on Lake Starnberg. One point she con-centrates on is developing personal and organisational resilience.

She trains »resilience counsellors« and is the author of the books »A Handbook for Integral Coaching«, »A Handbook for Resilience Training« and »Solid as a Rock and not a Hamster on its Wheel«.

Post-traumatic Stress DisordersChallenges in PTSD therapy

Post-traumatic stress disorders are not marginal phe-nomena: in total, 10 percent of all people suffer from a PTSD in their lives. Along with wartime experiences, expulsion or flight, other common causes can be ac-cidents or physical and mental abuse. Consequently with this disorder it is particularly important to pay careful attention in the therapy to the patients’ spe-cial characteristics and individual circumstances. The authors point out the challenges which can arise during PTSD treatment, how you can deal with them and what you have to take into consideration to make sure the therapy process is successful.

Existential Perspectives in Psychotherapy and Counselling

Practical treatment of basic life ques-tions

Existential subjects, such as questions about the meaning of life, guilt, responsibility, death and dying have long been central to psychotherapy and coun-selling. Clients feel lonely, suffer from serious guilt feelings or feel overwhelmed by the confrontation with questions about the meaning of life. Alexander Noyon and Thomas Heidenreich identify the philosophical background, but above all look at how to deal therapeutically with existential ques-tions. Subjects include the development of values, the meaning of life, feelings of guilt, loneliness, and unalterable states of distress. No definitive answers can be given here but there are lines of argument for interviews with clients and a possible basic attitude towards existential questions is described.

Alexander Noyon, professor of psy-chology and psychotherapy, pro-fessor for psychology in social work at the University of Mannheim.

A for use in out-patient and in-patient settings

More than ever before depression is the number one amongst widespread illnesses. In fact, for one third of the people affect-ed the disturbance becomes chronic. Previous psychological therapeutic approaches never lived up to expectations. With CBASP – a cognitive behavioural therapeutic concept – for the first time a procedure has been developed which is aimed especially at people with chronic depression. It has shown itself to be effective on a regular basis. In this book, the authors describe how CBASP can be used in both in-patient and out-patient settings and also in individual and group ther-apy. There are concrete examples on video and work sheets available online to make the implementation that much easier.

Have you had since your childhood that feeling of being “somehow different”? Have you always been able to occupy yourself alone rather than enjoy be-ing together with other people? Do your boss and your girl-friend complain about the same problems? – You could be suffering from ADHS.ADHS is also a problem for adults; approx. 3% of adults in Germany are affected, almost two thirds of those who already had attention deficit disorders as children. Those affected suffer from being scatter-brained, impulsive and easily distracted. In their book for patients, Nina Baer and Peter Kirsch describe how to find out whether you are suffering from ADHS, describe the illness and show you where to get help and therapy, what you can do yourself and when you need to call in the experts.
