Nikaragua war 1894 das erste Land der Welt, das Gedenkbanknoten ausgab. Es sollten aber noch Jahrzehnte vergehen,in denen berühmte Persönlichkeiten oder historische Ereignisse fast ausschließlich auf Gedenkmünzen gewürdigtwurden, bevor mit den modernen Weltbanknoten – besonders seitdem Millennium-2000-Gedenknoten weltweiteinen wahren Aufschwung erlebten und immer mehr Liebhaber finden. Das liegt nicht zuletzt auch an den vielfältigengrafischen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten, die jede Banknote auch zum Kunstwerk machen.

Das vorliegende Buch katalogisiert erstmals alle Banknoten der Welt, die zu einem besonderen Gedenkanlaß ausgegeben wurden, komplett in Farbe, mit ausführlichen Beschreibungen und historischen Erläuterungen in Deutschund Englisch und bewertet alle Ausgaben und Varianten marktgerecht in Euro.

In 1894, Nicaragua was the first country in the world to issue commemorative banknotes. Decades were to pass inwhich famous personalities and historical events were almost only commemorated in coins before with modern worldbanknotes – especially since the millennium 2000 commemorative notes experienced a veritable boom worldwide,attracting an increasing number of collectors. This can also be attributed to the widely diverse design possibilitieswhich make every banknote a work of art.

This book is the first to catalogue all the banknotes in the world which were issued to commemorate a special occasion, in colour and with detailed descriptions and historical explanations in German and English, evaluating themarket price of all issues and variants in Euros.

Hans-Ludwig Grabowski:

Hans L. Grabowski wurde 1961 in Thüringen geboren und beschäftigt sich bereits seit seiner Kindheit mit historischenGeldscheinen. Seit 1998 lebt er in Bayern und arbeitet für die Verlage Gietl und Battenberg als Fachautor und Redak-teur. Bekannt ist er durch die Veröffentlichung zahlreicher Artikel und Katalogwerke zu deutschen und internationalenBanknoten, Notgeld und Lagergeld sowie durch Software für Sammler. Er ist Redakteur der Zeitschrift „Münzen &Sammeln“ und wurde 2004 mit dem Vreneli-Preis der „World Money Fair“ in Basel für außergewöhnliche numismati-sche Leistungen im Bereich Journalismus & Publizistik geehrt. Er gilt als einer der profiliertesten Geldscheinexperten Deutschlands.

Hans L. Grabowski was born in Thuringia in 1961 and has pursued an interest in historical banknotes since his child-hood. He moved to Bavaria in 1998 and works for the Gietl and Battenberg publishing houses as an author of referencebooks and as an editor. He became well-known for the publication of numerous articles and catalogues featuringGerman and international banknotes, notgeld and camp money along with collectors’ software. He edits the specialistmagazine “Münzen & Sammeln” (Coins and Collecting) and in 2004, was awarded the Vreneli prize at the WorldMoney Fair in Basel for special merits in the field of numismatic journalism. He is regarded as one of the most distinctive banknote experts in Germany.

Josef Gerber:

Josef Gerber wurde 1949 in München geboren und war als selbständiger Spediteur tätig. Schon seit vier Jahrzehntensammelt er Banknoten aus aller Welt und ist in Fachkreisen durch Ausstellungen, Vorträge und Fachartikel in numisma-tischen Zeitschriften bekannt. Seit 2002 ist er vereidigter Gutachter für Weltbanknoten. Seine zahlreichen Reisen rundum die Welt nutzt er stets auch, um numismatische Kontakte zu knüpfen. So berät er unter anderem verschiedeneNationalbanken.

Josef Gerber was born in Munich in 1949, working as an independent forwarding agent. Four decades ago he started tocollect banknotes from all over the world and is well-known in collectors’ circles for exhibitions, lectures and articles innumismatic journals. In 2002 he became a sworn valuer for world banknotes. On his numerous trips around the worldhe always takes the opportunity to make numismatic contacts, also advising various national banks.

Vorwort

Die kulturelle und künstlerische Vielfalt von Banknoten aus al-ler Welt fasziniert schon seit Jahrzehnten immer mehr Samm-ler rund um den Globus. So ist das Sammeln von Weltbank-noten – auch Dank der Kataloge von Albert Pick, die heuteweltweite Standard- und Zitierwerke für Händler und Sammlersind – zu einem der beliebtesten Sammelgebiete in der mo-dernen Numismatik geworden, das besonders durch die Ver-breitung des Internet zahlreiche junge Sammler begeistert.

Während bei Münzen schon seit langem auch sog. Gedenk-ausgaben (Gedenkprägungen) üblich und von zahlreichenSammlern bevorzugt gesucht sind, gaben nationale Noten-banken Gedenkbanknoten vermehrt erst in den letzten Jahr-zehnten, besonders aber seit der Jahrtausendwende 2000 inUmlauf. Was damit entstand, ist ein völlig neues Sammelgebietvon Weltbanknoten, die bisher fast ausschließlich nur nachLändern oder Motiven gesammelt wurden, und für das dieserKatalog einen ersten zusammenfassenden Überblick bietet.

Die ersten Gedenkbanknoten überhaupt waren Billets des Te-soro Nacional von Nikaragua aus dem Jahr 1894, die an den402. Jahrestag der Wiederentdeckung Amerikas durch Chri-stoph Kolumbus erinnerten und die heute wahre Raritäten sind.Vielleicht hatte man schlicht und einfach den 400. Jahrestagverpaßt, und so wollte man wenigstens zwei Jahre später die-ses bedeutenden Ereignisses in der Menschheitsgeschichtegedenken.

Auch aus Mexiko sind frühe Gedenkbanknoten bekannt. Hierwar es 1910 die Banco Minero, die zwei Nominale ihrer re-gulären Ausgabe mit zusätzlichen Überdrucken versah, um den100. Jahrestag der Unabhängigkeit Mexikos zu würdigen.

So vielfältig wie das Leben selbst und die Entwicklung dermenschlichen Zivilisation in den verschiedenen Regionen un-seres Planeten, so vielfältig sind auch die Anlässe, die zur Aus-gabe von Gedenkmünzen und mittlerweile auch von Gedenk-banknoten dienten und dienen. Neben der Würdigung bedeu-tender Persönlichkeiten aus Politik, Wissenschaft oder Kunstnimmt die Erinnerung an historische Anlässe, wie etwa zuStaatsgründungen, Unabhängigkeitserklärungen oder Revolu-tionen einen beträchtlichen Anteil an den Gedenkausgaben ein.Daneben sind es aber auch aktuelle Ereignisse, wie Sportver-anstaltungen oder Gipfeltreffen, die immer wieder Anlaß zurAusgabe von Gedenknoten geben. Manche dieser derart zeit-nah gewürdigten Ereignisse schrieben gar Weltgeschichte, wieder Fall der Berliner Mauer und die Öffnung des BrandenburgerTors Ende 1989.

So verschieden die Anlässe zur Ausgabe von Gedenkmünzenoder Gedenkbanknoten auch sein können, so haben sie dochalle eines gemeinsam. Kein anderes Objekt wechselt so oft denBesitzer wie Geld und zirkuliert in der gesamten Bevölkerung.Schon seit der Antike, als es noch keine Massenmedien gab,

wie wir sie heute kennen, war das Bildnis eines Herrschers aufeiner Münze oft der einzige Weg, um ihn bei seinen Untertanenbekannt zu machen. Der Symbol-Charakter des Geldes unddessen Breitenwirkung wurde und wird deshalb auch immerwieder politischen Zwecken untergeordnet – sei es, daß manin der Vergangenheit wertlos gewordene Geldscheine mit poli-tischen Parolen überdruckte und so zu Propagandazweckenmißbrauchte, oder daß neben der Gestaltung von Banknoten,die besonders in totalitären Systemen beredtes Zeugnis derpolitischen Verhältnisse sein können, auch Gedenkanlässe ge-würdigt werden, die leider ebenfalls politischer Propagandadienen.

Wie bei Gedenkmünzen, so spielt bei der Ausgabe von Ge-denkbanknoten natürlich auch der finanzielle Aspekt eine wich-tige Rolle. Schon lange wird mit dem direkten Verkauf von Ge-denkmünzen an Sammler auch Geld verdient und oftmals sinddiese Stücke kaum im Zahlungsverkehr anzutreffen. Auch derVerkauf von Gedenkbanknoten an Sammler nimmt immergrößere Ausmaße an, und schon gibt es auch zahlreiche Aus-gaben in speziell gestalteten Verpackungen, meist den sog.Foldern, für die Aufpreise verlangt werden. Im Falle von Thai-land, das eine Vielzahl von Gedenkbanknoten – meist zur Wür-digung des Königs – aufweisen kann, kommen die so erwirt-schafteten Gewinne einem königlichen Hilfsfonds zugute, derz. B. die Entwicklung ländlicher Regionen unterstützt, mit demaber auch den Tsunami-Opfern von 2004 geholfen wurde.

Wenn man sich mit Gedenkbanknoten beschäftigt, bleibt esnicht aus, sich auch mit den Gedenkanlässen zu befassen. ImKatalog werden deshalb nicht nur die einzelnen Banknoten auf-geführt, mit Vorder- und Rückseite abgebildet und beschrie-ben – es wird oft auch auf die Gedenkanlässe eingegangen,was mit historischen Betrachtungen verbunden ist. Diese Er-läuterungen sollen Sammlern und Interessierten einen Zugangzum geschichtlichen Kontext bieten, aus dem heraus es zu Ge-denkausgaben kam und kommt.

Die Idee, für das Gebiet der Gedenkbanknoten einen eigenenKatalog zu erstellen und damit erstmals weltweit diese beson-deren Ausgaben für Sammler zu erfassen, zu beschreiben undzu bewerten, entstand bereits vor einigen Jahren. Damals wares Josef Gerber, der mich für dieses Vorhaben interessierte undder mir sofort eine Vielzahl von Gedenkbanknoten als Anregungpräsentierte. Ohne den Sammeleifer und die umfangreiche Un-terstützung durch ihn wäre dieses Buch nie entstanden.

Der Katalog führt rund 430 Gedenkbanknoten aus über 100Ländern auf und bewertet diese in EURO. Nicht aufgenommenwurden private Ausgaben, wie z. B. die der Chatham Islands.

Autoren und Verlag hoffen, daß sie mit diesem Katalog, der we-gen seiner internationalen Thematik zweisprachig verfaßt wur-de, zahlreiche Sammler für Banknoten, insbesondere für Ge-denkbanknoten, aus aller Welt interessieren können.

Preface

The cultural and artistic diversity of banknotes from all over theworld has fascinated an increasing number of collectors aro-und the globe for decades now. Collecting world banknotes –partly thanks to the catalogues by Albert Pick, which today, arestandard works and works of reference for dealers and collec-tors worldwide, has become one of the most popular collec-tor’s fields in modern numismatics and one which has attrac-ted many young collectors, especially as a result of the Inter-net.

As far as coins are concerned, also so-called commemorativeissues (memorial coins) have been common and much soughtafter by numerous collectors for a long time now, whereas na-tional note-issuing banks only started putting commemorativebanknotes into circulation in the past few decades, especially,however, since the Millennium in 2000. This created a comple-tely new collector’s field, namely world banknotes, which to da-te have almost only been collected according to countries ormotifs and for which this catalogue provides the first compre-hensive overview.

The very first commemorative banknotes were national trea-sury bills issued by the Tesoro Nacional of Nicaragua in the year1894, which commemorate the 402nd anniversary of the dis-covery of America by Christopher Columbus and which are truerarities today. Perhaps the 400th anniversary had quite simplybeen missed and people wanted to commemorate the eventwhich had played an important role in the history of humanity,even if it was two years later.

Early commemorative banknotes are also known from Mexico.In this case it was the Banco Minero which added overprintsto two denominations of its regular issues in 1910 in order tohonour the centenary of Mexican independence.

The richness and variety of life itself and the evolution of hu-man civilisation in the various regions of our planet are equal-led by the widely diverse occasions which served and serve theissue of memorial coins and, in the meantime, of commemo-rative banknotes. Besides honouring important figures from po-litics, science or art, the commemoration of historical eventssuch as the founding of states, declarations of independenceor revolutions also represent a large proportion of the comme-morative issues. Besides these, many contemporary hap-penings such as sporting events or summit meetings repea-tedly provide the occasion to issue commemorative bankno-tes. Some of these recent occasions which have been com-memorated in our times have even written world history, suchas the fall of the Berlin Wall or the opening of the BrandenburgGate at the end of 1989.

However diverse the occasions giving rise to the issue of bank-notes or coins may be, they all have one thing in common. Noother object changes hands so often as money and circulatesthroughout the entire population. Since antiquity, when no

mass media existed as we know it today, the depiction of a ru-ler on a coin was the only way to make him known to his sub-jects. The symbolic character of money and its widespread im-pact often was and still is repeatedly subordinated to politicalaims – be it that in the past, banknotes which had becomeworthless were overprinted with political slogans and abusedfor propaganda purposes or the fact that besides the design ofbanknotes which, especially in totalitarian regimes, can beareloquent witness to the political circumstances, occasions arecommemorated which unfortunately also serve political propa-ganda.

As with commemorative coins, the financial aspect naturally al-so plays an important role in the issue of commemorative bank-notes. The direct sale of commemorative coins to collectorshas long been profitable and very often these items are rarelyencountered in actual payment transactions. Similarly, the sa-le of commemorative banknotes to collectors is assuming ever-growing dimensions and there are already numerous issues inspecial packaging, usually so-called folders, for which an extracharge is levied. In the case of Thailand, which can boast a lar-ge number of commemorative banknotes – mostly in honour ofthe king – the profits thus generated go into a royal relief fundwhich, for example, benefits the development of rural regionsbut which also helped support the victims of the Tsunami in2004.

For those who occupy themselves with commemorative bank-notes, an interest in the occasions to be commemorated is in-evitable. For this reason, the catalogue does not only list theindividual banknotes, showing and describing the front andback of them, it also goes into the events to be commemora-ted, which is often connected with historical observations. The-se explanations are intended to give collectors and interestedpersons access to the historical context which gave or givesrise to the commemorative issues.

The idea to produce a separate catalogue for commemorativebanknotes and to record these special issues for collectors forthe very first time worldwide was born a few years ago. It wasJosef Gerber who aroused my interest in this project and whoimmediately presented me with numerous commemorativebanknotes as inspiration. Without his collector’s zeal and con-siderable support this book would never have been written.

The catalogue lists around 430 commemorative banknotesfrom more than 100 countries, giving the value thereof in Euros.Private issues such as those of the Chatham Islands have notbeen included.

Both authors and publishers alike hope that with this catalo-gue, which has been produced in two languages due to the in-ternational nature of its contents, they will be able to interestnumerous collectors of banknotes, especially commemorativebanknotes, from all over the world.

Albanien / Albania

Geschichte / HistoryIm Ersten Balkankrieg wurde 1912 die Unabhängigkeit Albaniens proklamiert. 1913 wurde das Landinternational anerkannt und ab 1920 war es Mitglied im Völkerbund. 1921 marschierten jugoslawi-sche Truppen in Albanien ein. Der Völkerbund konnte den Konflikt lösen und am 9.11.1921 be-stätigte eine Botschafterkonferenz die Grenzen Albaniens. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte Albanien nochkeine eigene Nationalbank.

In the First Balkan War in 1912, the independence of Albania was declared. In 1913, the countrywas internationally recognized and in 1920, it became a member of the League of Nations. In 1921,Yugoslavian troops invaded Albania. The League of Nations was able to resolve the conflict and on9th November, 1921, an ambassadorial conference confirmed the borders of Albania. At that time,Albania still did not have its own national bank.

Geschichte / History1482 landeten die Portugiesen an der Küste Angolas und gründeten Handelsstationen an der Mündung des Kongo, was zur Ko-lonisierung führte. Von 1580 bis 1640 gehörte Portugal zu Spanien und 1641 – 1648 kontrollierten die Niederländer Angola. 1648stellten die Portugiesen ihre Kolonialmacht in Angola wieder her. Angola wurde 1975 unabhängig.

The Portuguese landed on the coast of Angola in 1482. They founded trading stations at the mouth of the River Congo, coloni-zing the land. From 1580 till 1640, Portugal belonged to Spain and from 1641 till 1648, Angola was under Dutch control. In 1648,the Portuguese restored their colonial power in Angola. Since 1975, Angola has been an independent state.

Das liegt nicht zuletzt auch an den vielfältigengrafischen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten, die jede Banknote auch zum Kunstwerk machen.

Das vorliegende Buch katalogisiert erstmals alle Banknoten der Welt, die zu einem besonderen Gedenkanlaß ausgegeben wurden, komplett in Farbe, mit ausführlichen Beschreibungen und historischen Erläuterungen in Deutschund Englisch und bewertet alle Ausgaben und Varianten marktgerecht in Euro.

In 1894, Nicaragua was the first country in the world to issue commemorative banknotes. Decades were to pass inwhich famous personalities and historical events were almost only commemorated in coins before with modern worldbanknotes – especially since the millennium 2000 commemorative notes experienced a veritable boom worldwide,attracting an increasing number of collectors. This can also be attributed to the widely diverse design possibilitieswhich make every banknote a work of art.

This book is the first to catalogue all the banknotes in the world which were issued to commemorate a special occasion, in colour and with detailed descriptions and historical explanations in German and English, evaluating themarket price of all issues and variants in Euros.

Hans-Ludwig Grabowski:

Hans L. Grabowski wurde 1961 in Thüringen geboren und beschäftigt sich bereits seit seiner Kindheit mit historischenGeldscheinen. Seit 1998 lebt er in Bayern und arbeitet für die Verlage Gietl und Battenberg als Fachautor und Redak-teur. Bekannt ist er durch die Veröffentlichung zahlreicher Artikel und Katalogwerke zu deutschen und internationalenBanknoten, Notgeld und Lagergeld sowie durch Software für Sammler. Er ist Redakteur der Zeitschrift „Münzen &Sammeln“ und wurde 2004 mit dem Vreneli-Preis der „World Money Fair“ in Basel für außergewöhnliche numismati-sche Leistungen im Bereich Journalismus & Publizistik geehrt. Er gilt als einer der profiliertesten Geldscheinexperten Deutschlands.

Hans L. Grabowski was born in Thuringia in 1961 and has pursued an interest in historical banknotes since his child-hood. He moved to Bavaria in 1998 and works for the Gietl and Battenberg publishing houses as an author of referencebooks and as an editor. He became well-known for the publication of numerous articles and catalogues featuringGerman and international banknotes, notgeld and camp money along with collectors’ software. He edits the specialistmagazine “Münzen & Sammeln” (Coins and Collecting) and in 2004, was awarded the Vreneli prize at the WorldMoney Fair in Basel for special merits in the field of numismatic journalism. He is regarded as one of the most distinctive banknote experts in Germany.

Josef Gerber:

Josef Gerber wurde 1949 in München geboren und war als selbständiger Spediteur tätig. Schon seit vier Jahrzehntensammelt er Banknoten aus aller Welt und ist in Fachkreisen durch Ausstellungen, Vorträge und Fachartikel in numisma-tischen Zeitschriften bekannt. Seit 2002 ist er vereidigter Gutachter für Weltbanknoten. Seine zahlreichen Reisen rundum die Welt nutzt er stets auch, um numismatische Kontakte zu knüpfen. So berät er unter anderem verschiedeneNationalbanken.

Josef Gerber was born in Munich in 1949, working as an independent forwarding agent. Four decades ago he started tocollect banknotes from all over the world and is well-known in collectors’ circles for exhibitions, lectures and articles innumismatic journals. In 2002 he became a sworn valuer for world banknotes. On his numerous trips around the worldhe always takes the opportunity to make numismatic contacts, also advising various national banks.
