DYNAMICS OF PERIPHERYResearch workshop and seminar 21.-25.02.2017 in Palermo

Peripheries are actual important fields of action for social and economic spatial stabilisation, in Italy they are e.g. focussed with the policies of “strategies for the internal areas”, in Germany they are addressed by federal and state policies on reason of recent research (BBSR: Landflucht?, Wachsen oder Schrumpfen?). The main focus in both Countries is directed towards infrastructural support for shrinking and demographically changing areas. The land flight in the South of Italy is actually enforced by extremely high unemployment of young people. Migration movements and refugees are also questioning the relations and balances between city and country in Italy and in Germany, highlighting the possible role of peripheries.“Dynamics of Periphery” for the field of action formulates a scientific approach targeting innovation in the periphery - through activation of local and regional spatial potentials. It aims to enhancing the creative use of the territorial capital not only for new initiatives of individual economic and cultural projects, but to initiate with and for the initiatives larger-scale development impulses for cities, towns and regions. The Research workshop and seminar “Dynamics of periphery” is focused on the interaction between central and peripheral areas. The selected case study for the international workshop is Favara, a municipality of the Province of Agrigento. The international workshop will be focused on the urban regeneration and it will experiment new design solutions for the inner city and its peripheries by reference to the creative and inno-vative milieu as a local resource to design and restore cities based on culture, communication, cooperation, energy and sustainability. The aim is to design future scenarios of evolving territories, especially the regener-ation of urban areas characterized by marginalization and decline, abandoned buildings and infrastructures, functional underuses or cycles in weak reactivation.__________________________________________________________________________________21.02.2017 9:00 - 13:00Site visit, Palermo for conference speakers and participants: historic centre and Palermo pheriphery tour.
