IntroductionGenial Geschichte Topics ist ein fächerübergreifendes Arbeitsprogramm, das bestimmte geschichtliche Themen für den Englischunterricht anbietet und die Schüler zum selbstständigen Erarbeiten einer historischen Epoche in englischer Sprache anregt.

Viele differenzierte Arbeitsaufgaben, Puzzles, Rätsel, Lernspielen-Dominos und Triminos tragen zur Festigung der Geschichten, der Informationstexte sowie der neuen Vokabeln bei.

Die Selbstkontrolle der einzelnen Aufgaben ermöglicht den Schülern das Lerntempo selbst zu bestimmen.

Christopher ColumbusChristopher Columbus was a very famous sailor and explorer.

On August 3rd, 1492, Columbus started out to sea with three ships, the “Ni a”, the “Pinta” and the “Santa Maria”.

Columbus was a brilliant mapmaker and navigator.

The Spanish rulers, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, believed in Christopher Columbus and they paid for his voyage.

Columbus wanted to travel to India, China, Japan and the Indies because he believed that he would find gold and valuable spices there. He knew that the world was round, so he thought he could travel to the “Far East” by sailing west. What he did not know was that two huge continents were in his way.

Weeks and weeks went by. The sailors became tired and scared. They had only salted meat to eat and nothing to see but the ocean.

One morning the sailors saw another strange sight. A blanket of seaweed which covered the ocean. It was all around them. Suddenly they saw birds flying overhead. This meant that land had to be nearby.

When the sun rose on the next day, they saw an island. “Land! Land!” they shouted. The sailors were so happy that after getting ashore they kissed the sand.

Columbus called the people on this island “Indians” because he thought that he had reached the Indies. The natives were wearing gold rings. Columbus wanted to know where they had the gold from but they didn’t understand him.

Early one morning a strong wind came up and drove the “Santa Maria” aground. Columbus´ ship was wrecked.

Soon the “Ni a” and the “Pinta” were ready to sail back to Spain. They were loaded with many new kinds of food - corn, potatoes, peanuts, papayas and avocados. Columbus also took six “Indians” with him, although they didn’t want to go to Europe.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella named him “Admiral of the Ocean Sea”.

They believed that he had found a new route to the Indies, when in reality he had discovered America.

Columbus never knew what an important discovery he had made.
