Illustratorin bei der Arbeit

Doreen Goedhart ist Illustratorin. Sie zeichnet die Bilder für die Emmi-Cox-Bücher. Gerade arbeitet sie an den Illustrationen für Band 4 „Nebel im Wacholder-Wald“, der im Dezember erscheinen wird.

„Sobald ich das Skript und das Briefing vom Verlag bekommen habe, geht´s los mit der Arbeit. Das Skript enthält die komplette Ge-schichte und im Briefing ist genau beschrieben was ich jeweils auf welchen Buchseiten zeich-nen soll, in welcher Größe die Illustrationen erscheinen werden und welche Farben Emmis Kleidung haben soll.

Bevor ich jedoch mit dem Zeichnen begin-nen kann, muss ich recherchieren, wie es in dem jeweiligen Land und zu der Zeit, in der die Geschichte spielt, aussieht. Auch wie die Pflanzen, Tiere, Häuser, Gegenstände und die Menschen aussehen, ist wichtig. Als nächstes mache ich mir ganz grobe Skizzen wo und wie die einzelnen Personen platziert werden. Bei schwierigeren Körperhaltungen fotografiere ich mich per Selbstauslöser und benutze die Fotos als Vorlage. Nun werden die Bleistift-Skizzen etwas genauer und es werden mehr Details hinzugefügt wie Hintergründe und Tiere.

Doreen Goedhart is an illustrator. She draws the pictures for the Emmi Cox books. Right now she is doing the illustrations for volume 4 “Fog in the Juniper Forest” which will be released in December.

“As soon as I have received the script and the briefing from the publisher, my job starts. The script contains the complete story, and the briefing describes exactly, what I have to draw on each page of the book, as well as which size the illustrations have to be and which colour Emmi’s clothes are supposed to have.

Before I can start drawing, however, I have to do some research about what it looks like in the country at the time the story takes place. How the plants, animals, houses, objects and the people look like, is important too. Next, I make rough drafts, where and how the figures should be placed. In case of difficult postures, I take pictures of myself by self-timer and use the photos as a guide. Then, the pencil drafts become more detailed and more details are added to the drawing, such as backgrounds and animals.

grobe Skizze Reinzeichnung

Diese scanne ich ein und schicke sie per E-Mail an den Verlag. Von dort bekomme ich Ände-rungswünsche mitgeteilt, die ich in die Skizzen einarbeite, bis alle Zeichnungen freigegeben sind. Nun kann ich alle Skizzen mit Hilfe ei-nes sogenannten Leuchttisches ordentlich auf dickeres Papier abpausen. Dies nennt sich Reinzeichnen. Dabei werden die wichtigsten Figuren und Gegenstände getrennt vom Hin-tergrund gezeichnet, damit diese Einzelmotive im Buch mehrfach verwendet werden können.

Jetzt wird es endlich bunt. Ich arbeite haupt-sächlich mit Aquarellfarben, Buntstiften und Copic Markern. Das sind besondere Filzstifte. Am Computer nehme ich dann noch Farban-passungen vor, füge die Figuren in die Hinter-gründe ein und setze noch letzte Änderungs-wünsche um.

Am Ende heißt es dann nur noch gespannt warten, bis ich vom Verlag meine Beleg-Ex-emplare zugeschickt bekomme und endlich sehen kann, wie meine Illustrationen im ferti-gen Buch aussehen.

I scan these drafts and send them by e-mail to the publishers. From them I get their requests for modification, which I include in the drafts until they are accepted by the publishers. Now, I can copy all drafts onto thicker paper. I do that with a so-called light table. That’s the fi-nal drawing. With this step, the most important figures and items are drawn separately from the background in order to use these motifs several times in the book.

Now, it finally gets colourful. I mainly work with water colours, coloured pencils and Copic markers. These are special felt pens. On the computer I adjust the colours, add the figures to the background and implement the final requests for modifications.

In the end, it’s just waiting until I receive my specimen copies and can see how my illustrations look like in the finished book.

Autorenlesung & Israel-Workshop

Anfang Juni 2016 war die Autorin Solveig Aria-ne Prusko zu Gast im Kopernikus Gymnasium in Blankenfelde südlich von Berlin. An einem langen Tisch, der mit lauter für Israel typischen Dingen dekoriert war, nahmen zunächst die Schüler der Klasse 5L Platz, um der Autorin zu lauschen, die aus dem dritten Emmi-Cox-Band „Reise um den Salz-Kreis“ las. Es war aber wie immer nicht nur eine Lesung, sondern auch lebhafter Dialog mit viel interessanter Info – ein bisschen Erdkunde, Physik und Biologie. „Unsere Klasse fand Ihren Vortrag interessant und toll. Das Buch war sehr informationsreich, aber auch spannend und lustig (...). Wir haben auf abenteuerliche Weise viel über Salz erfah-ren (…) und wir finden, dass Sie einen genialen Kopf haben und viel Fantasie, aber dabei nicht zu fantasievoll werden (…)“, schwärmen Merle und Lina (5L) in ihrer Fanpost, wie Carina (5L): „Ich fand die Autorenlesung lustig. Selber finde ich es toll, an allem zu riechen und vieles zu probieren. (…) Die Bücher sind lustig und ich finde es cool, dass es Bücher gibt, die so viel

Author’s reading & Israel WorkshopAt the beginning of June 2016, Solveig Ariane Prusko visited the Kopernikus Gymnasium (high school) in Blankenfelde south of Berlin (Germany). The pupils of the 5L took a seat at a long table, which was decorated with plenty of things typical for Israel, in order to listen to the author reading Emmi Cox Vol. 3 “Trip around the Salt Circle”. As always, it was not only a reading, but also a lively dialogue with lots of info – a little bit of geography, physics and biology. “Our class loved your interesting lecture. The book was very informative as well as exciting and funny. (…) In an adventuresome way we learned a lot about salt (…) and we think, that you have an ingenious brain and a lot of imagination but you are not too fanciful (…)” enthuse Merle and Lina (5L) in their fan mail, as well as Carina (5L): “The author’s reading was funny. I love to take a smell of everything and taste many things (…). The books are funny and it’s pretty cool that there are books containing so much: German, English,

Nach der Pause stand für die Schüler der Klasse 7L ein Israel-Workshop auf dem Stundenplan. „Als ich den großen Gruppenraum wieder be-trat, duftete es nach Israel!“, schwärmt Solveig. Einige Schüler hatten israelische Spezialitäten zubereitet: Es gab Hummus, Falafel und Safran- brötchen. Mit leckerer Begleitung starteten alle den Workshop. Zu Beginn wurden erste Kenntnisse über Israel per Kartenabfrage ge-sammelt. Mit zahlreichen Fotos, die Solveig kommentierte, gab sie einen Einblick in das vielseitige Land. Zur Auflockerung haben alle zur „Hora“, traditioneller israelischer Musik, einen Rundtanz getanzt. Abschließend stellte sich die Autorin und Verlegerin den Interview- fragen der Schüler und erzählte offen über sich und ihren Beruf als Schriftstellerin. „Das Programm war sehr entspannend. Wir hatten sehr viele leckere und aromatische Gerichte gekocht, die zu dem Thema passten (…). Ins-gesamt herrschte bei allen Aktionen eine sehr angenehme Stimmung. Die Autorin war sehr offen und erzählte uns neben Fakten über Israel auch viel über ihr Privatleben, wie sie auf die Hauptfigur ihrer Bücher kam, dass sie gerne reist und schon oft in Israel war und vieles mehr über sich und ihre Familie. Es war eine sehr schöne und interessante Zeit, an die wir uns noch lange erinnern werden“, schreibt uns z. B. Cosima (7L). Wir haben sehr viel Fanpost von den Kopernikus-Gymnasiasten bekommen. Vielen lieben Dank euch allen!

After the break, an Israel workshop was scheduled for the pupils of the 7L. ”When I entered the big group room again, it smelled like Israel!” enthuses Solveig. Some pupils had prepared Israeli specialties: hummus, falafel and saffron rolls were served. In delici-ous company, everyone started the workshop. First, knowledge about Israel was collected by cards. With lots of photos, which were commented by Solveig , she provided an in-sight into the multifaceted country. For relaxa-tion, all danced a round dance to the “Hora”, traditional Jewish music. In conclusion, the author and publisher offered to answer questions and spoke frankly about herself and her profession of a writer. “The program was very relaxing. We had cooked many de-licious and aromatic dishes, which suited the subject (…). Overall it was a very comfortable atmosphere with all the activities. The author was very frank and, in addition to facts about Israel, talked about her private life, how she developed the main character of her books, that she loves travelling, has been to Israel quite often and much more about herself and her family. It was a very nice and interesting experience that we will remember for a long time” Cosima (7L) wrote to us. We received a lot of fan mail from the pupils of the Kopernikus Gymnasium. Not only a special fan, Fynn from Almersbach / Westerwald (Germany) is also the winner of our competition from the recent edition. Fynn (9) likes cooking, reading and experimenting, plays the drums and recently also the e-guitar. “I’ve read all of the Emmi Cox books and knew immediately, where I can find the solution” told Fynn, when Solveig Ariane Prusko gave him his prize. “This one I’ll take with me for the holi-days!” said Fynn - very happy about his new traveler’s pepper mill. Have a safe trip, Fynn!

Valtteri and Tuulianna from Rusutjärvi in Finland are great Emmi Cox fans who like reading outdoors during the summer. “Since I’ve been taking German lessons at school, I can read my Emmi books in German, too!” rejoices Tuulianna (11). Thank you for your great photo!
