Die Panoramastraße zum Stilfserjoch

Die kurvenreiche Bergstraße auf das Stilfserjoch (2.758 m.ü.M.) im Ortlergebiet ist die höchste Passstraße Italiens und gilt als eine der imposantesten Straßen der Welt. Sie führt von Italienischer, Schweizer und Südtiroler Seite zum Stilfserjoch Pass hinauf. Um den Nervenkitzel auf der Panoramastraße voll auszukosten, sollte man sich Zeit nehmen, denn sie zählt 48 Kehren auf Südtiroler Seite und 40 Kehren auf Lombardischer Seite. Die charakteristischen Schwün-ge vor dem beeindruckenden Panorama des Nationalparks Stilfser-joch machen die Straße zu einer der beliebtesten Strecken für Motorrad- und Fahrradfahrer. So nehmen alljährlich im Spätsommer tausende Radfahrer am Stilfserjoch Radtag teil. An diesem Tag wird die gesamte Straße für den motorisierten Verkehr gesperrt.

Der Nationalpark Stilfserjoch ist eines der größten Naturschutz-gebiete Italiens und des gesamten Alpenbogens. Gletscher und atemberaubende Gipfel, Wälder und Wildbäche formen die Land-schaft des Nationalparks rund um die Ortler-Cevedale-Gruppe und das UNESCO Biosphärenreservat (Val Müstair Parc Naziunal). Von den Talböden bis in die hochalpinen Gletschergebiete finden sich im Nationalpark Stilfserjoch alle alpinen Klimazonen. Das vielseitige Ökosystem bietet zahlreichen seltenen Pflanzen und gefährdeten Tierarten einen geeigneten Lebensraum.

Tra il fondovalle e le zone di ghiaccio perenne, nel Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio sono presenti tutte le zone climatiche dell’ambiente alpino. Caratteriz-zato da una forte biodiversità, il suo ecosistema offre un habitat naturale per numerose specie vegetali e animali anche rare e in via di estinzione.

Stelvio National Park in the Ortler Region

The Stelvio National Park is one of the largest nature reserves in Italy and in the Alps. Its landscape is shaped by glaciers and im-posing mountains, woods and torrents stretching all around the Ortler-Cevedale group and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Val Müstair Parc Naziunal). In the Stelvio National Park, all Alpine climate zones can be found, from the valley basin up to high Alpine glacier regions. This varied ecosystem provides a perfect habitat for a multitude of rare plants and endangered animal species.

Geschichte und Bau der Panoramastraße

Die Straße auf das Stilfserjoch, die „Königin der Alpenstraßen“, stellt ein Meisterwerk des Straßenbaus dar. Bereits von Kaiser Franz I. in Auftrag gegeben, wurde die von Ingenieur Carlo Donegani geplante Straße unter widrigsten Umständen von 1820 bis 1825 errichtet. Rund 80 Jahre später wurde sie für den Automobilverkehr ausge-baut. Auch die Front im Ersten Weltkrieg verlief am strategisch wichtigen Stilfserjoch. Die Straßenführung selbst wurde bis heute kaum verändert.

La storia e la costruzione della strada panoramica

Considerata la regina delle strade alpine, quella dello Stelvio è una delle strade di montagna più spettacolari al mondo e un vero e proprio gioiello ingegneristico. Altrettanto avventurosa fu la sua co-struzione. Voluta già dall’imperatore Francesco I d’Austria e proget-tata dall’ingegnere bresciano Carlo Donegani, fu costruita in tempi record tra il 1820 e il 1825, affrontando non poche difficoltà. Circa 80 anni dopo fu ampliata per accogliere il traffico veicolare. Durante la Grande Guerra, il Passo dello Stelvio si rivelò un punto strategico e zona di fronte. Ancora oggi, lungo i numerosi sentieri, sono ben visibili le tracce di quel triste capitolo di storia mondiale. Ad oggi, il tracciato della strada è rimasto pressoché invariato.

History and Construction of the Panoramic Road

The road to the Stelvio Pass remains even today a masterpiece of road construction. The 88 bends were commissioned by Emperor Franz I, planned by engineer Carlo Donegani and built between 1820 and 1825, under highly adverse circumstances. Around 80 years later, it was expanded for vehicle traffic. During the First World War, it was also used for the front at the strategically impor-tant Stelvio Pass. The route itself has hardly changed.

Lo scenario mozzafiato del Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio attorno a questo capolavoro ingegne-ristico fatto di curve e tornanti, ne fa meta ambita per ciclisti e mo-tociclisti. Ogni anno l’evento Stelvio Bike Day / Scalata Cima Coppi attira migliaia di patiti della bici che approfittano della chiusura della strada al traffico per avere i mitici tornanti tutti per sé.

The curved mountain road to the Stelvio Pass (2,758 meters above sea level) in the Ortler region is the highest pass road in Italy, and is considered one of the most imposing roads in the world. It leads from Lombardy, Switzerland and South Tyrol to the Stelvio Pass. Take your time and savor the thrill of this panoramic road, with 48 bends on the South Tyrolean side and 40 bends on the Lombard side. Its characteristic curves with impressive panoramic views of the Stelvio National Park make this road a popular route for motor-cyclists and cyclists. Every year in late summer, thousands of cyclists take part in the Stelvio Bike Day. On this day, the entire road is blocked to motor traffic.

Ein Nationalpark – drei Kulturen

Die hochalpine Region um die Ortler-Cevedale-Gruppe und entlang der Passstraße auf das Stilfserjoch wird von drei verschiedenen Kulturräumen und Sprachen geprägt. Auf Südtiroler Seite liegt der Vinschgau, eines der vielfältigsten und geschichtsträchtigsten Täler des Landes. Auf der anderen Seite der Passstraße erstreckt sich das Lombardische Veltlin in der Provinz Sondrio rund um den berühm-ten Ski-Thermal-Ort Bormio. Auf Schweizer Seite gelangt man über den Umbrailpass in das rätoromanische Val Müstair mit seinem berühmten UNESCO Weltkulturerbe Kloster St. Johann.

Un Parco Nazionale – tre culture

La regione alpina attorno al gruppo dell’Ortler-Cevedale e lungo la strada del Passo è caratterizzata da tre aree linguistiche-culturali diverse tra loro. Sul lato altoatesino si estende la Val Venosta, una delle valli più varie e ricche di storia della provincia. Sull’altro ver-sante si scende in Valtellina, in provincia di Sondrio, con il celebre centro sciistico e termale di Bormio. In territorio svizzero, si incon-tra la Val Monastero in cui ancora oggi si parla la lingua romancia e in cui si può visitare il celebre monastero di S. Giovanni, patrimonio UNESCO.

One National Park – Three Cultures

The high Alpine region around the Ortler-Cevedale mountain range and along the panoramic road to the Stelvio Pass is characterized by three different cultural regions and languages. On the South Tyrolean side lies the Venosta Valley, one of the most diverse and historical valleys in the area. On the other side of the mountain pass, the Lombardy Valley extends to the province of Sondrio, near the famous ski and thermal resort of Bormio. On the Swiss side, the Umbrail Pass gives access to the Romansh Müstair Valley with its famous UNESCO-listed Abbey of Saint John.

Das Sommerskigebiet am Stilfserjoch Gletscher ist eines der größ-ten in den Alpen und erstreckt sich vom Stilfserjoch Pass von 2.758 m bis hoch zum Monte Cristallo auf 3.450 m mit einem spektakulären Panoramablick auf die Berge der Ortlergruppe. Besonders unter Profisportlern ist das Skigebiet beliebt und wird gerne zur optima-len Vorbereitung auf die Wintersaison genutzt. Das hochalpine, von Val Müstair, dem Vinschgau und Bormio aus erreichbare Skigebiet ermöglicht eine Ski-Saison von Mai bis November. Dabei stehen den Skifahrern und Snowboardern 20 Pistenkilometer, 6 Bahnen und Lifte sowie 2 Langlaufloipen zur Verfügung.

Quella sul ghiacciaio dello Stelvio è una delle aree sciabili estive più ampie dell’arco alpino e si estende dal Passo, a quota 2.758 m, fino al Monte Cristallo, a 3.450 m, riservando scorci spettacolari sulle vette del gruppo dell’Ortler. L’area è apprezzata meta per molti big dello sci che scelgono lo Stelvio per il ritiro in vista della stagione invernale. Raggiungibile dalla Val Monastero, dalla Val Venosta e da Bormio, il comprensorio sciistico è aperto da maggio a novembre. I patiti della neve hanno a disposizione 20 km di piste, 6 impianti di risalita e 2 piste da fondo.

Stelvio Summer Ski Area

The summer ski area on the Stelvio Glacier is one of the largest in the Alps and stretches from the Stelvio Pass at 2,758 m up to Monte Cristallo mountain at 3,450 m, with spectacular panoramic views of the Ortler. The ski area is particularly popular among professional athletes and used for their preparation for the winter season. The high Alpine ski area is accessible from Müstair Valley, Venosta Valley and Bormio, and provides a ski season lasting from May to November. Skiers and snowboarders have 20 km of slopes, 6 cable cars and lifts, and 2 cross-country ski runs at their disposal.
