A word from our Chapter President… Mike Lustig Dear Members, On behalf of the Board of Directors of EAA 266, I am pleased to announce our slate for the 2015-2016 season as follows: President: Mike Lustig Treasurer: Roberto Cea-Campo Caterers: Leo & Nora Nikkinen Program Director: Paul Czernenko Newsletter Editor: Richard Guevara Secretary: Dave Cyr Membership: Michel Moreau Librarian: Ed Hannaford Flight Advisor: Graham Batty Webmaster: Still Open We are currently looking for a new Webmaster to take over from Dave, who is substituting temporarily following Tony’s resignation. Nowadays, a useful and up-to-date website is a key factor in establishing credibility for any type of organization with the younger set. A web author/editor (Webmaster) will get involved in:

• Website design and programming using native HTML or through a web development tool • Producing new content and writing it in an interesting and appealing manner • Sourcing images and artwork, and photos from Chapter members • Maintaining the website by keeping it up to date and ensuring the information is accurate • Developing and implementing a strategy for a worthwhile Facebook page, as a

complement to the website itself Given that this skill set is one not a lot of us possess, I would ask all the Chapter members to please think for a few minutes if they know any aviation-friendly individuals that might be tempted to devote an hour or three a month to a worthy cause. They can rest assured that it would be a rewarding experience! E-mail me at [email protected] for more details. It’s that time again to renew your Chapter dues. If you have not done so, please see Michel Moreau as soon as you can. Still $25, inflation-resistant to say the least… Please keep in mind that November’s meeting will be held on November 19, exceptionally, being the third Thursday of the month. This month’s meeting is not affected. This year’s Christmas Dinner will be held on Thursday, December 10. Mark this date in your calendars now. More details will be announced shortly. Best Regards to All, Mike Lustig President

A word from our Editor Richard Guevara A discussion around the table at the last Director’s Meeting made me realize how utterly unprepared I am for an emergency descent from an aircraft in a parachute – and I mean unprepared in all senses – physically (drills) as well as psychologically. I recall from various means that people have said that the only thing they remembered when they had to act on a life threatening event was some very sober, clear and simple instruction, long dormant but indelibly marked in a student’s consciousness. This instruction was usually something screamed ay you by some a crusty instructor. “PROTECT YOUR GUN!” was the only thing a police officer in LA remembers as if a past voice had screamed it in his ear as he scuffled with someone who just shot him and was reaching for the officer’s gun. A pilot hearing “FLAMEOUT” may not be dealing with someone who is trying to kill him, but faces similar demons nevertheless. I recall a PBS documentary in which a woman who almost drowned along with her aged mother in the recent tsunami in Japan had one simple message for the viewers: “You are on your own – depend on no one” – a message we ignore at our peril. I suspect that regardless of how you go through the process stages of a life threatening event, you must react immediately with the full knowledge and conviction that at that instant, your actions give you the best chance at survival.

I, for one, need a much better handle on this issue.

Are you prepared for an emergency parachute descent?

Remembering Oshkosh Road Trip 2015 Roberto Cea-Campo Amongst the many ways to get to Air Venture, I have done the commercial flying route and I have flown in as a passenger (copilot I'd like to think) in a Quickie II homebuilt as well. This time had to be as one of the most common ways people get there: road trip!

The planning started as a potential 3 person crew but ended up, after several days of considerations, a two person trip. Michel Moreau (as my companion for the road) offered his Subaru Forester for the trip, and we left fairly early on July 18th heading west with a mandatory stop at the rest area just after entering the 401 in Ontario for a coffee.

The idea was to take our time and overnight somewhere along the route and continue the next day. Neither of us thought that the overnight stop would be until 1am and a bit off route towards Oshkosh...

We crossed the border at Sarnia and continued west with no major issues until we reached Kalamazoo, Michigan, still with day light, just to find out that every Hotel, big or small was packed!! the same thing at the next town (Paw Paw), apparently all types of school sports competitions were taking place that weekend. So we had a late supper (at Denny's which was so-so) and planned our next move to find a place to stop or worse case drive all the way to Chicago.

Finally we found a place to stay in South Bend, Michigan. Well rested, we continued the next day.

We were at the Air Venture grounds by early afternoon and checked out the displays already set up including the Icon stand, EAA members tents, the Chinese electric light aircraft Rui Xiang RX-E among others, plus the parts market with some suppliers already open. I took the opportunity to get some hardware while I was there.

The next day, July 20th, Air Venture activities and visitors were in full force. As it probably did for many others, the following got my attention:

- The Airbus A350, still with the test bed equipment inside the cabin. Impressive technology and modern looks.

- U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor, to me one of the finest multi-role fighters in the skies today.

- B-52 Bomber, massive, can't pass by without stopping for a while to check it out.

- Fancy painted Titan Tornado S and a SS with Tundra tires. Ultralight area.

- COPA gathering organized by Magnes and the EAA Canadian Council hot breakfast at the Nature Center.

- Ball Turret Gunner (B-17 Flying Fortress) Staff Sgt. Doug Ward, with whom I had a very interesting conversation back in 2006, and this year still going strong!

- A Cessna 140 flown from Argentina all the way to Oshkosh!

- One of the only two airworthy de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito in the world, the KA114.

Plenty to see for one week let alone for a few days trip, but with the certainty that probably it will not the last one.

For the return we decided to take the northerly route, through Sault Sainte Marie, towards Sudbury and North Bay. The planned stop was ill-fated again, this time the target was Elliot Lake, which sounded appealing, but out of luck again as the whole place was booked in advance due to summer vacation time, at least we tried! To compensate we had a nice supper there at the FireSide Classic Grill with a couple of "The angry squirrel" locally brewed beer. Overnighted in Massey, again quite late at night.

The next day the Trans-Canada highway took us to Mattawa for a good late lunch and then continued east just north of Algonquin Provincial Park. As a passenger this time around, I was quite surprised to see a black bear near the side of the road! No picture taken unfortunately, but never a dull moment.

The usual suspects ...
